Gamecock Offense Held in Check in State Tournament Loss

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks had their season end after just one game at the State B tournament on Friday, August 5th.  The Dimock/Emery Raptors held the Gamecocks to just four hits and then had two big innings in a 13-0 win.

The Raptors got one run in the top of the second and led 1-0 after three innings of play.  Dimock/Emery then had a four-run top of the fourth and added six more runs in the top of the fifth to make it an 11-0 lead at that point.  The Raptors had two more runs in the top of the sixth.

Broc Haldeman had two of the four hits for the Gamecocks.  Cam Quigley and Chad Morrison each had a hit as well.  Brandon McKnight pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits with a strikeout.  Drew Maras pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed six runs, four earned, on four hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Landry Knight and Micah Warrington both pitched an inning and each gave up a hit.

The Gamecocks finished the 2022 season as the Cornbelt League regular season champions and District 4B champions.

Joe Hanisch Hits for Cycle, Gamecocks Win District 4B Title

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks led for most of the game, but had to rally in the eighth inning for an 11-7 win over the Canova Gang in the District 4B Championship game in Dell Rapids on Saturday, July 30th.

The Gamecocks jumped ahead early with three runs in the bottom of the first.  Joe Hanisch had an RBi single, and Broc Haldeman followed with a two-run single.  Canova tied the game with three runs in the top of the third, but the Gamecocks quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the inning.  Hanisch had a solo home run to center field to make the score 4-3.

Devon Garry also hit a home run, a two-run shot to left field, in the bottom of the fourth inning to push the Gamecock lead to 6-3.  Canova cut the lead to 6-5 with a two-run top of the fifth.  The score remained 6-5 until the top of the eighth.  The Gang took their first lead, 7-6, with a two-run top of the eighth.

Humboldt/Hartford answered with a five-run bottom of the eighth.  Brandon McKnight had an RBI ground ball to tie the game 7-7 and then later scored on an error.  Clayton Hanisch scored on a wild pitch to make the score 9-7.  Cam Quigley had an RBI single, and Chad Morrison scored the final run on a passed ball.

J. Hanisch had a big night with five hits, hitting for the cycle with two singles, a double, triple, and home run, and also had two RBIs.  Haldeman had four hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Garry had two hits, one a home run, and an RBI.  Quigley also had two hits and an RBI.  McKnight finished with a single and RBI.  Morrison had two hits, one a double.  Adam Hentges added a single.

Five different players took to the mound for the Gamecocks.  Micah Warrington pitched three innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits and a walk.  Drew Maras pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed three hits and a walk.  Landry Knight pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on a hit and four walks with a strikeout.  Noah Vettrus also pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed two hits with two strikeouts.  Quigley threw 1/3 of an inning and allowed two earned runs on two hits.

Haldeman was named the tournament’s MVP and Batting Champion.

Gamecocks Move on to District Championship and State Tournament

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks defeated the Flandreau Cardinals 8-4 on Tuesday, July 26th at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.  The win moves the Gamecocks into the District 4B championship game and also the South Dakota State B Amateur tournament.

The game was scoreless through three innings of play.  The Gamecocks got one run in the bottom of the fourth.  Brandon McKnight had an RBI ground out to break the tie.  Flandreau would take the lead in the top of the fifth with four runs.  The Gamecocks, however, would respond with a big inning of their own in the bottom of the fifth.

Joe Hanisch had a two-run single to cut the lead to 4-3.  Devon Garry addd an RBI single.  Broc Haldeman scored on an error to give the lead back to the Gamecocks, 5-4.  Noah Vettrus drew a bases loaded walk.  Chad Morrison added an RBI ground out, and Humboldt/Hartford led 7-4 after the fifth inning.  Hanisch scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 8-4.

Haldeman had three hits, including a double.  Garry had two hits and an RBI.  Hanisch and McKnight both had a single and two RBIs.  Kyle Bailey finished with a single.  Vettruss and Morrison both had an RBI.  Cole Barthel pitched five innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  Drew Maras pitched four innings and allowed four hits with one strikeout.

The Gamecocks will face Canova in the district championship on Saturday, July 30th, at around 6:30 p.m. at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

Gamecocks One Win Away from State Tournament

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks are one win away from the state tournament after winning their first District 4B game on Saturday, July 23rd.  The Gamecocks took an 11-1 win over the Salem Cubs at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

Salem scored the first run of the game in the top of the first without the luxury of a hit.  The Gamecocks then scored the next 11 runs, scoring in five of the seven innings played.  Humboldt/Hartford had a total of 13 hits while holding Salem to just one.

Broc Haldeman had three hits and an RBI.  Brandon McKnight finished with two hits and an RBI.  Seth Cavanaugh and Noah Vettrus both had a hit and two RBIs.  Drew Garry and Chad Morrison each had a single and RBI.  Joe Hanisch and Kyle Bailey both had a hit as well.

McKnight pitched six innings and allowed an earned run on one hit and two walks with five strikeouts.  Landry Knight pitched the final inning and recorded two strikeouts.

The Gamecocks will play Flandreau on Tuesday, July 26th at 6:00 p.m. in Dell Rapids.

Gamecocks Win Final Two Games of Cornbelt Season

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks won their final two Cornbelt League games.  They defeated Lennox 8-2 on Thursday, July 14th and then beat Colman 7-2 on Sunday, July 17th.

Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks 8, Lennox 2

Three runs in the bottom of the first inning was enough for the Gamecocks on Thursday against Lennox.  The Gamecocks held a 3-0 lead until the top of the fourth.  Lennox scored one run in the top of the fourth for a 3-1 score.  The Gamecocks then scored two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two more in the seventh for an 8-1 lead.  Lennox got one more run in the top of the ninth.

Kyle Bailey had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Broc Haldeman had two hits and two RBIs.  Joe Hanisch finished with two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Noah Vettruss added two singles and an RBI.  Cam Quigley had two hits, and Devon Garry had a double.  Brandon McKnight pitched seven innings and allowed one earned run on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.  Micah Warrington pitched two innings and allowed an earned run on four hits with one strikeout.

Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks 7, Colman 2

The Gamecocks had another three-run first inning on Sunday against the Colman As.  They added another run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to extend the lead to 5-0.  Both teams scored a run in each the seventh and eighth innings.

Haldeman finished with three hits and an RBI.  Bailey and Adam Hentges both had two singles and two RBIs each.  McKnight added three singles.  Drew Maras had two singles.  Luke Wodahl and Vettruss each had a single.  Chad Morrison had an RBI.  Cole Barthel pitched seven innings and allowed an earned run on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Landry Knight pitched two innings and allowed an earned run on a hit and three walks with five strikeouts.

Gamecocks Blanked by Canova in Make-up Game

GThe Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks were held to just three hits and were shut out by the Canova Gang 7-0 on Tuesday, July 12th.  The game was a make-up game from Tuesday, July 5th.

Canova put a run on the board in the bottom of the first and then had a five-run second inning.  The score remained 6-0 until the bottom of the seventh when the Gang scored one more run.

Kyle Bailey and Joe Hanisch each had a double.  Chad Morrison had a single.  Landry Knight pitched two innings and allowed six earned runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout.  Drew Maras pitched five innings and allowed one earned run on seven hits with a strikeout.  Cole Barthel pitched one inning and didn’t allow a hit or walk.

Gamecocks Take Two from Dell Rapids PBR

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks took two games from Dell Rapids PBR on Sunday, July 10th.  The first game was an 8-4 victory that was resumed from the suspended game on June 9th.  The Gamecocks followed that with a 15-0 win.

Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks 8, Dell Rapids PBR 4

The game was started on June night and suspended with the Gamecocks leading 6-1.  Humboldt/Hartford scored a run in the top of the first, two in the top of the second, and single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings.  Dell Rapids scored their run in the bottom of the second.

When the game resumed on July 10th, Dell Rapids picked up a run in the bottom of the second inning.  The Gamecocks and PBR both scored two runs in the eighth inning.

Kyle Bailey had two hits, one a home run, and two RBIs.  Seth Cavanaugh also had two hits and two RBIs.  Joe Hanisch had two hits, one of them also a home run, and an RBI.  Adam Hentges had the other hit in the game.  Landry Knight pitched five innings and allowed an earned run on two hits and four walks with seven strikeouts.  Cam Quigley pitched three innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts.  Drew Maras threw one inning and had two strikeouts.

Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks 15, Dell Rapids PBR 0

The Gamecocks belted 19 hits and scored 15 runs in their shutout win in the second game that ended in the fifth inning.  Humboldt/Hartford scored two times in the first, four in the second, one in the third, six in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to end the game.

Noah Vettruss had three hits, one a home run and one a double, and five RBIs.  Hentges had three hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Hanisch finished with a home run and double with two RBIs.  Bailey had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Broc Haldeman finished with two hits and two RBIs.  Knight had two hits and an RBI, while Devon Garry had a hit and an RBI.  Brandon McKnight had two hits, and Cam Quigley and C Maras both had a hit.

Micah Warrington pitched five innings and allowed five hits with three strikeouts.

Gamecocks Beat Wood Ducks in July 8th Game

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks won the second match-up of the season with the Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks on Friday, July 8th.  The Gamecocks scored in every inning and held the Wood Ducks to just two hits in a 15-0 win.

The Gamecocks scored eight times right away in the bottom of the first inning.  They added two runs in the second, single runs in the third and fourth innings, and then ended the game on the 15-run rule with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.  The Gamecocks had a total of 19 hits in the game.

The Wood Ducks had hits by Austin King and JJ Jesson.  Austin Smith pitched three innings and allowed five earned runs on 10 hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  Logan Larsen pitched two innings and allowed 10 earned runs on nine hits and four walks with one strikeout.

Noah Vettruss had three hits and three RBIs for the Gamecocks.  Kyle Bailey had two hits and two RBIs.  Chad Morrison, Clayton Hanisch, and Cam Quigley all had two hits with a double and an RBI.  Drew Maras had a hit and two RBIs.  Devon Garry finished with a double and an RBI.  Landry Knight, Adam Hentges, Cooper Maras, and Broc Haldeman all had a single and an RBI.  Joe Hanisch added a double.  Brandon McKnight pitched all five innings and allowed two hits and two walks with a strikeout.

Madison Scores 10 Unanswered in Win over Gamecocks

The Madison Broncos scored 10 unanswered runs in a 14-7 home win over the Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks on Thursday, June 30th.

Madison scored first four runs of the game.  They got two runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second.  Humboldt/Hartford had a big top of the fifth inning scoring four times to tie the game.  Joe Hanisch was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  Broc Haldeman drew a bases-loaded walk, and K Bailey had a two-run single to make the score 4-4.

The Broncos had two big innings in a row.  They scored five times in the bottom of the fifth and five more in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 14-4.  The Gamecocks scored three times in the top of the seventh.  Kyle Bailey had a two run double and then later scored on a wild pitch.

Bailey had two hits, one a double, and four RBIs.  Haldeman had two hits, including a double, with an RBI.  Hanisch had a single and an RBI.  Cam Quigley, Cooper Maras, Noah Vettrus, and Landry Knight all had singles.

Brandon McKinight pitched four innings and allowed seven runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Knight pitched two innings and allowed a hit and a walk with five strikeouts.  Zach Treiber pitched 1 2/3 inings and allowed seven runs, five earned, on five hits and two walks with a strikeout.

Gamecocks Win Third Straight League Game

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks won their third straight Cornbelt League game after a win on Thursday, June 23rd and another win on Sunday, June 26th.

Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks 4, Colman A’s 1

The Gamecocks took an early lead and held the Colman A’s to five total hits in a 4-1 road win on Thursday.

Broc Haldeman broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third with a two-run single.  Clayton Hanisch added another run with an RBI single in the top of the fourth for a 3-0 advantage.  Colman got a run in the bottom of the fourth.  Kyle Bailey pushed the lead back to three for the Gamecocks with an RBI double in the top of the fifth for the final run of the game.

Devon Garry had three hits, two doubles and a triple.  Seth Cavanaugh finished with three singles.  Brandon McKnight had two hits, one a double.  Haldeman had a single and two RBIs.  Bailey had a double and an RBI.  Hanisch added a single and RBI.  Chad Morrison and Adam Hentges both had a single.  Landry Knight pitched six innings and allowed an earned run on four hits and four walks with eight strikeouts.  Micah Warrington pitched three innings and allowed just one hit while striking out one.

Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks 7, Salem Cubs 6

The Gamecocks scored four times in the top of the ninth and then stopped a rally by the Salem Cubs to get a 7-6 win on Sunday.

Haldeman and Bailey both drove home runs in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead.  Haldeman had another RBI on a single in the top of third, and the Gamecocks led 3-0 at that point.  Salem tied the game in the bottom of the third with three runs.  The Cubs took the lead in the bottom of the seventh, 5-3, with two runs.  The score remained 5-3 heading into the ninth inning.

Haldeman drove home his third and fourth runs of the game with a two-run double to tie the game. Bailey broke the tie on the very next pitch with an RBI single.  Knight scored on an error later in the inning giving the Wood Ducks a 7-5 lead.  Salem got a two-run RBI hit in the bottom of the ninth and had the game-tying run on third, but the Gamecocks got the final out on a ground ball.

Haldeman had three hits, one a double, and four RBIs.  Bailey had two hits and two RBIs.  Cam Quigley had a triple.  Cavanaugh, Joe Hanisch, and Luke Wodahl all had singles.  Cole Barthel pitched six innings and allowed five runs, two earned, on five hits and four walks with a strikeout.  Drew Maras pitched three innings and allowed an earned run on three hits with two strikeouts.
