Mustang Girls Fall at Home to Sioux Falls Christian

The Tri-Valley Mustangs were only down seven to the Sioux Falls Christian Changers at the end of the first quarter, 21-14, on Tuesday, February 8th.  The Chargers’ aggressive defense, however, held Tri-Valley to just 25 points over the remaining three quarters in a 71-39 win.

The Mustangs were held to just seven points in the second quarter, and they trailed 38-21 at halftime.  Tri-Valley got another 14 points in the third quarter, but the Charger offense was able to score 21 points as they extended their lead to 59-35.  The Chargers outscored Tri-Valley 12-4 in the final quarter.

Tri-Valley finished the game shooting 33% (14-42) overall, 20% (4-20) from three-point area, and 7-9 from the free-throw line.  Sioux Falls Christian was 56% (27-48) shooting, 42% (5-12) on three pointers, and 60% (12-20) from the free-throw line.

Lauren Grinde had 15 points and two rebounds to lead the Mustangs.  Paige Jewett finished with eight points, four rebounds, and three assists.  Ava Pearson added six points, three rebounds, and two blocks.  Stephanie Buchmann had five points and three assists.

Second Half Run Gives Lennox Win over Tri-Valley

Lennox opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run which lifted them to a 69-50 win over the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Monday, February 7th.

The Orioles built a five-point lead by the end of the first quarter, 15-10.  Tri-Valley hung with Lennox in the second quarter, and the Orioles led 35-27 at halftime.  The start of the third quarter gave Lennox all the momentum.  The Orioles went on a 9-0 run to start the quarter and outscored the Mustangs 21-8 for a 56-35 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Mustangs shot 43% (21-49) overall from the field, 29% (4-14) from three-point area, and a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line.  Lennox finished the game shooting 45% (26-58), 35% (9-26) from three-point area, and 62% (8-13) from the free-throw line.

Cory McDonald had 17 points and three rebounds in the game.  Noah Haynes had 12 points and four rebounds.  Lance DeWitt finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.  Connor Christensen added six points and six rebounds.

Tri-Valley will host Milbank on Saturday, February 12th.

Tri-Valley Wrestling Team Places Sixth in Redfield

The Tri-Valley Mustang wrestling team placed sixth with 86.0 points at the Redfield Invitational on Saturday, February 5th.  Redfield won their own event with 170.0 points.  Parkston was second with 144.0 points, and Burke/Gregory was third with 131.0 points.

Brody Dybvig (126, 3-1) and Mason Hendrixson (170, 3-1) both had third place finishes.  Cole Hendrixson (106, 3-2), Lawson Loiseau (138, 3-2), and Luke Nehlich (195, 2-2) had fourth place finishes in their respective weight classes.  Landyn Reiser had three wins.  Connor Glassford finished with two wins on the day, and Zach Powell and Everet Althoff each had a win.

The Mustangs will be in Flandreau on Friday, February 11th with duals against Garretson, Kingsbury County, and Flandreau.

Tri-Valley Girls Earn Dak-12/NEC Clash Win

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls traveled to Madison for the Dak-12/NEC Clash on Saturday, February 5th.  The Mustangs played the Clark/Willow Lake Cyclones and returned home with a 65-50 win.

The two teams ended the first quarter tied 11-11, and from there, the Mustangs slowly pulled away from the Cyclones.  Tri-Valley ended the first half with a 31-22 lead.  The lead grew to 12 points by the end of the third quarter, 48-36.  The Mustangs also outscored the Cyclones 17-14 in the final quarter for the win.

Lauren Grinde had 20 points to lead the Mustang scoring attack.  Ava Pearson had 17 points, and Paige Jewett finished with 13 points in the game.

Tri-Valley (9-7) will host the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers in a big Region 3A match-up on Tuesday, February 8th.

Tri-Valley Boys Fall to Quarriers

The Tri-Valley Mustangs traveled to Dell Rapids to play the Quarriers on Thursday, February 3rd.  Dell Rapids took the win 71-63.

The two teams traded blows in the first half. The Quarrires were able break away for a five point lead by the end of the first quarter. Dell Rapids led 22-17 at the quarter break. That lead was short lived as Tri-Valley was able to get a four-point lead, 35-31, with 1:50 to play in the second quarter. The Quarriers ended the half on a 10-1 run for a 41-36 halftime lead.

Dell Rapids was able to hold the lead throughout the entire second half. The advantage grew to double digts, 56-44, heading into the fourth quarter. Tri-Valley tried to make a run late in the game, getting within five points, but Dell Rapids made enough free-throws in the closing minute in the win.

Tri-Valley finished the game shooting 46% (26-56) from the field, 33% (6-18) on three-pointers, and 38% (5-13) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers were 50% (27-54) shooting, 39% (9-23) from three-point area, and 47% (8-17) from the free-throw line.

Four players finished in double figures for the Mustangs.  Cory McDonald had 19 points, five rebounds, and four assists.  Connor Chirstensen had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Noah Haynes nearly had a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.  Lance DeWitt also had 12 points along with five rebounds and three assists.

Second Half Rally Lifts Mustang Girls to Win over Dell Rapids

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls used a big second half to help them to a 63-46 road win over the Dell Rapids Quarriers on Thursday, February 3rd.

The first half featured a few runs by both teams. After the Mustangs scored the first four points, Dell Rapids went on an 11-0 run and led 11-4 with 2:20 to play in the first quarter. Tri-Valley responded with a 10-0 to finish the quarter for a 14-11 lead. The Quarriers had another run in them in the second quarter. They outscored Tri-Valley 14-6 for a 25-20 halftime lead.

Dell Rapids still held a five point lead, 34-29, with 4:40 to play in the third quarter. That’s when the Mustangs went on a big roll. The Mustangs pulled within three points, 36-33, with 3:18 left in the quarter and then finished with a 10-0 run for a 43-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Dell Rapids scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to three points, 43-40, with 5:45 to go in the game.  The Mustangs held the Quarriers to just six points the rest of the game while scoring twenty themselves.

Tri-Valley shot 43% (21-49) in the game, 55% (6-11) on three pointers, and 83% (15-18) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers shot 27% (17-63) from the field, 20% (5-20) from three-point area, and 47% (7-15) from the free-throw line.

Paige Jewett had 18 points, five rebounds, and two assists.  Stephanie Buchmann had a double-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three steals, and three assists.  Lauren Grinde also had 17 points along with six rebounds, two steals, and two assists.

West Central Boys Cruise Past Mustangs

The Tri-Valley Mustang boys basketball team hosted the West Central Trojans on Tuesday, February 1st.  The Trojans cruised to a 67-33 road victory for their sixth win in a row.

West Central held Tri-Valley to five points in the first quarter and built a 14-5 lead.  They continued to roll from there.  Their lead grew to 36-14 at halftime.  West Central then outscored Tri-Valley 31-19 in the second half in the win.

Tri-Valley shot 35% (13-37) from the field, 18% (2-11) from three-point area, and 5-9 from the free-throw line.  Lance DeWitt had seven points.  Noah Haynes finished with six points and five rebounds.  Cory McDonald had six points and three rebounds.  Brayden Oyen added five points.

West Central finished the game shooting 44% (25-57) from the field, 33% (11-33) from three-point area, and 55% (6-11) from the free-throw line.  Braden Herr had 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Jack Linneman had 11 points and four assists.  Mubarak Ibrahim had nine points and six rebounds.  Grafton Stroup and Dillon Jackson both had eight points each.

The Mustangs will travel to Dell Rapids on Thursday, February 3rd.  The Trojans will travel to Tea also on Thursday.

Second Quarter Run Sends West Central to Victory over Tri-Valley

The last time the Tri-Valley Mustangs and West Central Trojan girls teams met was at the Region 3A tournament last year.  The Mustangs upset the Trojans to advance to the SoDak 16 in that game.  On Tuesday, February 1st, the Mustangs hosted the Trojans in a packed gymnasium.

The two teams traded baskets in the first quarter electrifying both crowds.  The Trojans held a slim 17-15 lead after the first quarter.  West Central only led by five points, 28-23, with 4:20 to play in the first half, but then went on a 9-0 run for a 37-23 lead.  They pushed the lead to 43-26 by halftime.  The Trojans continued their run in the second half.  West Central outscored Tri-Valley 22-13 in the third quarter for a 65-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The Trojans won the game 79-47.

Tri-Valley shot 40% (18-45) from the field, 19% (3-16) from three-point area, and 80% (8-10) from the free-throw line.  Lauren Grinde had 15 points and four rebounds.  Paige Jewett finished with 12 points and two rebounds.  Hillary Hastings had six points.  Ava Pearson added five points.

West Central finished 53% (29-54) shooting, 41% (13-32) from three-point area, and 67% (8-12) from the free-throw line.  Rylee Haldeman had 29 points, four rebounds, two steals, and five assists.  Addy Kramer had 23 points and 10 rebounds.  Cambell Fischer added eight points.

The Mustangs will travel to Dell Rapids on February 3rd.  The Trojans will travel to Madison on Friday, February 4th.

Quarrier Wrestling Hosts Senior Night

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team held their senior night while hosting a quadrangular on Tuesday, February 8th.  Dell Rapids had dual matches against Garretson, Sioux Falls Jefferson, and Sioux Falls O’Gorman.

The Quarriers as a team went 1-2 in the matches.  Dell Rapids defeated Sioux Falls Jefferson 48-35.  The Quarriers fell to Garretson 36-51 and to Sioux Falls O’Gorman 39-55.

The three seniors, Weston Mason, Hunter Nelson, and Connor Swaney, were recognized and also had a good night on the mats.  Nelson went 3-0 with three pins.  Mason was 2-1 with a pin and a forfeit win.  Swaney also had a pin on the night.

Kane Murphy went 3-0 with with pins.  Quinn Carr was 3-0 with two pins and a decision win.  Aiden Geraets and John Mortrude both were 3-0 with two pins and a forfeit win.  Rylee Bird had three pins on the night.  Brandon Schmidt and Kaiden Loweman also had one pin.

Dell Rapids will travel to Huron for one last regular season tournament on Saturday, February 12th.

St Mary Girls Survive in Baltic for Win

Playing in their second straight day, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls survived the Baltic Bulldogs for a 66-61 win on Tuesday, February 8th in Baltic.

The Cardinals got out to a big lead in the first quarter.  They led 27-9 by the quarter break.  Baltic made a big run in the second quarter, outscoring St Mary 22-9 to cut the lead to 36-31 at halftime.  The Bulldogs got the lead down to one point heading into the fourth quarter, 46-45.  St Mary went on a 10-4 run to start the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 56-49 with 5:55 to go in the game.  The Bulldogs pulled within two points again, 60-58, with 2:00 go.  St Mary pushed the lead back to six points, 64-58, with just under a minute to play.  Baltic was only able to get within three, 64-61, before St Mary sealed the victory with two free throws in the closing seconds.

St Mary shot 44% (22-50) from the field, 30% (7-23) from three-point area, and 65% (15-23) from the free-throw line.  The Bulldogs finished 47% (22-47) shooting, 2-8 from three-point area, and 56% (15-27) from the free-throw line.

Three players finished in double figures.  Madala Hanson had 17 points, five rebounds, and four steals.  Ella Griffin finished with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Maya Heinitz had 10 points, three rebounds, and two assists. 

The Cardinals will play McCook Central/Montrose in Salem on Friday, February 11th at 11:30 a.m. at the DWU Classic.
