Lillian “Lil” Zirpel

Lillian ZirpelLillian “Lil” Zirpel, 85, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital.

She was born Aug. 25, 1930, in Douglas County, SD, to Carl and Clara (Walz) Moege. She was baptized by Rev. Paul Hempel and later confirmed in the German language in June 1943, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Dimock. She attended grade school in a one-room schoolhouse in Washington Township and graduated from Parkston High School in 1948.

On June 6, 1948, she married Waldemar (Wally) Zirpel. Together they farmed 12 miles southwest of Mitchell. Wally died in 1993 and in 1994 she married Leonard Zirpel. Leonard died in 1998. In 2001, Lillian began working at Avera Select Insurance in Mitchell and retired in March 2013. Lil enjoyed playing cards, dancing, country music and embroidery. She was always happy to see her children and grandchildren when they came to visit.

She is survived by her five children: Caroline (Duane) Schuh, Rapid City, Bill (Kathy) Zirpel, Dell Rapids, Jim (Becky) Zirpel, Burke, Rita (Jimmie Jr.) Pope, Cleveland, OH, and Bob (Carolyn) Zirpel, Humboldt; six grandchildren: Mark (Josette) Schuh, Paula Arthur, Mikaela Pope, Jimmie Pope III, Hannah and Justin Zirpel; four great-grandchildren, Morgan and Lane Arthur, Ryan and Candace Wurdeman; one great-great-grandchild, Kenley Wurdeman; and her very special friend, Aleck Larson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands and brother, Willard Moege.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. CST, with 7 p.m. prayer services Thursday, Dec. 17, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Condolences may be left at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 18, at the Zion Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Flensburg Immanuel Cemetery, rural Dimock.

Lucy Rhode

Lucy RhodeLucy Rhode, age 90, of Canby, MN, passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at her daughters home in Dell Rapids, SD. Condolences may be left at Birk Funeral Home in Canby.

Lucy Medorothy Rhode was born on December 14, 1925 to parents James and Emma (Penehl) Orren in Rice, Minnesota. Her mother passed away when she was 13 years old so her father moved the family to Lynd, MN. As a young woman, Lucy worked in Marshall and that is where she met Emmett Rhode.

On October 24, 1947 Lucy was united in marriage to Emmett Elmer Rhode at the First Presbyterian Church in Canby, MN. To this union they were blessed with three children, Marvin, Lois and Barbara. They raised their family in Canby and Emmett purchased the Mobil plant and Lucy helped with the books. Emmett passed away on November 24, 2005 at the age of 79.

Lucy enjoyed gardening, canning and raising flowers. She also enjoyed farm work, fishing and polka music. She was very skilled in the art of embroidery and made numerous articles for friends and family. Lucy’s most enjoyed moments were spent visiting and spending time with family and friends.

Lucy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Canby and was a member of the Extension Club.

Grateful for having shared Lucy’s life are her children: Marv (Sandy) Rhode of Wentworth, SD, Lois Rhode of Sioux Falls, SD and Barbara Green of Dell Rapids, SD; five grandchildren: Michael (Nikki) Rhode, Timothy (Jennifer) Rhode, Joseph (Jenifer) Rhode, Martin Jr. (Nikki) Green and DeAnna (Todd) Penning; ten great-grandchildren: Austin, Cameron and Marin Rhode, Abigail and Elaina Rhode, Austin, Olivia and Nicholas Green, Jocelyn and Kaleb Penning and one step-great-granddaughter, Marty Michelle; one brother, Ralph (Judy) Orren of Marshall, MN and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Emma Orren; her husband, Emmett Rhode; two brothers, Howard Orren and Harold Orren; three sisters, Clarisse Burma, Abby Haas, Frances Weisenberg; son-in-law, Martin Green.

Quarrier Boys Outlast Tea Area Titans

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers picked up their second win of the season by holding off the Tea Area Titans 80-71 on Friday, December 18th, in Dell Rapids.

Tea Area held the lead at the first quarter break at 15-14.  However, Dell Rapids poured in 30 points in the second quarter and out-gained the Titans by 10 to head to halftime ahead 44-35.  The Quariers pushed their lead to 12 at the end of the third quarter on a last-second three-pointer by Sheldon Siemonsma to lead Tea Area 65-53.  The Titans out-scored the Quarries in the final quarter, but wasn’t enough as Dell Rapids held on for the win.

The Quarries shot 50% (30-60) from the field, 21% (4-19) from three-point area, and 84% (16-19) from the free-throw line in the game.  Dell Rapids had 35 team rebounds, seven team assists, 10 steals, and only turned the ball over five times.

Ty Hoglund led all scorers in the game with 44 points.  Hoglund also had seven steals, five assists, and three rebounds.  Siemonsma finished with 1o points and nine rebounds.  Mason Peter also had 10 points and added six rebounds.  Tea Area was led by Ethan Friedel with 30 points.

Dell Rapids (2-0) will host Baltic on Tuesday, December 22nd, as part of a double-header.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

DeSmet Rolls Past Cardinal Boys

DRSM LogoDeSmet shot 49% from the field in the game on their way to a 64-30 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Friday, December 18th, in DeSmet.  The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Cardinals 27-24, and DeSmet also forced 20 St Mary turnovers.

The Bulldogs led early and never looked back as they got out to a 23-5 lead after the first quarter.  DeSmet led 46-13 at halftime, and 57-21 after the third quarter.

St Mary shot 23.3% (10-43) from the field, 33.3% (4-12) from three-point area, and 66.7% (6-9) from the free-throw line in the game.  Luke Brown led the Cardinals with 11 points and three rebounds.  Connor Libis and Noah Fiegen each had five points a piece.  Fiegen had four rebounds in the game as well.

The Cardinals (1-2) travel to White to face Deubrook Area on Tuesday, December 22nd.

Tea Area’s Late Run Sparks Win over Quarrier Girls

NewDRLogoTea Area outscored the Dell Rapids Quarriers 10-1 in the final 5:07 of the game to earn a come-from-behind win 48-45 on Friday, December 18th, in Dell Rapids.

The Quarriers led early in the ball game taking a 15-8 lead after the first quarter.  The Titans scored the first seven points of the second quarter to tie the game at 15-15.  The game was tied again 18-18 with 2:00 to go in the second quarter.  Dell Rapids finished the half on a 4-1 run to lead 22-19 at halftime.

Tea Area took the lead with 4:00 to go in the third quarter 30-28.  Both teams traded baskets until Dell Rapids regained the lead at 36-35 at the end of the quarter.  The Titans scored the first three points of the fourth quarter to jump ahead 38-36, but Dell Rapids went on a 8-0 run to put the Quarriers in front 44-38 with 5:00 to play in the game.  That’s when the Titans made their final run of the game for the win.

Mikaela Stofferahn led Dell Rapids with 19 points.  Emma Paul added 10 points.  Karlee McKinney had a game-high 29 points for the Titans.

Dell Rapids (1-2) will play Deubrook Area on Saturday, December 19th, in Colman at the Entringer Classic.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

DeSmet’s Defense Leads to Win over Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoThe DeSmet Bulldog’s held the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals to just 11 first half points on their way to a 42-22 win in girls basketball action on Thursday, December 17th, in DeSmet.  The Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-6 lead after the first quarter and led 29-11 at halftime.  DeSmet also lead 34-13 at the end of the third quarter.

St Mary shot just 14.7% (5-34) from the field in the game and 70.6% (12-17) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had a total of 37 team rebounds, seven steals, four assists, but turned the ball over 30 times.

Jackie Wolles had nine points and nine rebounds in the game.  Sydney Cook also had nine points along with two rebounds.  Abby Burkhart and Lexi Klein each had two points apiece.  Kennedi Mullaney had two assists and four rebounds in the game.

St Mary (0-3) will play Colman-Egan in the Entringer Classic on Saturday, December 19th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

McCook Central/Montrose Rallies for OT Win over Quarrier Girls

NewDRLogoThe McCook Central/Montrose Cougars rallied for a come-from-behind, overtime win against the Dell Rapids Quarriers 66-61 on Monday, December 14th, at Dell Rapids High School.

Dell Rapids took the lead in the first quarter and led 16-12 by the end of the quarter.  McCook Central/Montrose tied the game at 20-20 towards the end of the second quarter, but Dell Rapids closed out the half on a 5-2 run to take a 25-2 lead into halftime.  The Cougars cut the Quarrier lead to one at the end of the third quarter at 37-36.

McCook Central/Montrose then took the lead in the fourth quarter.  The Cougars lead 54-50 with under a minute to play in the game.  Lindsey Morris hit a three-point shot to pull within a point at 54-53.  With :06 remaining the game, the Cougars missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Quarriers a chance at the end of the game.  Kaylee Hennen drove the lane and was fouled on a last-second shot.  Hennen made one-of-two free throws with :00.8 left to tie the game at 54-54 and send the game into overtime.

However, during the overtime period, McCook Central/Montrose took an early lead and made enough free throws down the stretch to come away with the win over the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids was led by Mikaela Stofferahn with 15 points.  Emma Paul finished with 14 points, while Averi Pankonen added 11 points for the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids (1-1) will host Tea Area on Friday, December 18th, as part of a double-header.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Fall to Bridgewater – Emery

DRSM LogoThe Bridgewater-Emery Huskies picked up a 72-27 win in their first game of the season against the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Monday, December 14th, in boys basketball action at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  It was the first loss for the Cardinals for the season.

The Huskies led the game from start to finish.  Bridgewater-Emery led 19-9 after the first quarter, 44-14 at halftime, and 63-22 at the end of the third quarter.

St Mary shot just 22.o% (11-50) from the field in the game, 13.3% (2-15) from three-point area, and 75.0% (3-4) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had a total of 31 team rebounds, 11 assists, but turned the ball over 27 times.

Noah Fiegen led St Mary on the night with 14 points and seven rebounds.  Zach Geraets added four points.  Garret Frost, Luke Brown, and Connor Libis each had three points apiece.  Brown led the team in assists with three.

The Cardinals (1-1) will host Centerville on Tuesday, December 15th, as part of a girls-boys double-header.  The games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Open Season with Win

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team opened their season with a 59-49 win over Estelline on Friday, December 11th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Estelline held a two-point lead after the end of the first quarter at 10-8.  The Cardinals were able to take the leading heading into halftime by a point at 23-22.  St Mary pushed their lead to five points by the end of the third quarter at 39-34.  The Cardinals then outscore Estelline 20-15 in the final quarter for the win.

Connor Libis led St Mary on the night with 20 points.  Garret Frost added 11 points for the Cardinals.  Estelline was led by Trevor Gorder with 21 points.

The Cardinals (1-0) will host Bridgewater/Emery on Monday, December 14th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Waste Water Rates Set to Increase in Dell Rapids

DellRapidsTowerThe waste water rates in Dell Rapids are set to increase.  The Dell Rapids City Council approved a 20% increase in the sewer rates for the 2016 adopted budget.  The rate increase is to help with costs for the waste water treatment facility project.

Ordinance 827 had its first reading during the latest city council meeting held on Monday, December 7th.  The proposed increases are as follows:

  • Base rate will increase from $15.25 to $18.34.
  • Per 1,000 gallons rate will increase from $4.22 to $5.06.
  • Total increase for 5,000 gallon user will be $7.26 per month.

This proposed increase will be the first increase of a total increase that will be phased-in to cover the costs of the new treatment facility.  The total increase will not be known until the final funding package for the waste water treatment facility is received from DENR.

Councilman Gary Haak motioned to approve this increase.  Councilman David Sommerfeld seconded, and the motion passed.
