Rezone Ordinance 822 Going to Public Vote

ReZoneRequest_2-2-15The citizens of Dell Rapids will get to decide if Ordinance 822 will be approved or rejected.  Referendum petitions were submitted to City Hall to put the ordinance to a public vote.  On October 19th the ordinance passed the second reading to rezone 608 E 6th Street from R2 to B2.

The Dell Rapids City Council voted to accept the petitions during their regular meeting on Monday, December 7th.  The motion carried which meant the decision of this ordinance would go to a public vote.  Councilman Mark Crisp then made a motion to set the date of the vote to coincide with the Municipal Election, which is being held on April 12th, 2016.  Councilman David Sommerfeld seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Hoglund Reaches Milestone in Quarrier Win

DRHSvsWC_BBB_12-11-15Ty Hoglund reached the 1,000 point milestone for his career on Friday, December 11th.  Hogland was only four points away from 1,000 entering the game against the West Central Trojans.  Hoglund hit a three-point shot three seconds into the game to give him 999 points.  With the score tied 8-8, Hoglund drove the length of the court after a rebound and made the left-handed layup with 4:33 to go in the quarter to give Dell Rapids a 10-8 lead…a lead they would hold on to the rest of the game…and give him 1,001 points for his career.

Hoglund finished the game with 36 points, three steals and five assists for Dell Rapids.  Sheldon Siemonsma had 14 points, while Mason Schmidt had 12 points.  Siemonsma also had nine rebounds.  Sam White and Jeffrey Schuch both had eight rebounds a piece.  Carson Rentz dished out four assists in the game.

Dell Rapids led 22-13 after the first quarter as the Quarriers out-scored West Central 12-5 after Hoglund’s milestone layup.  The Quarriers continued the offensive momentum into the second quarter outscoring the Trojans 21-13 to give Dell Rapids a 43-26 halftime lead.

The Quarriers scored the first seven points of the third quarter to give them their biggest lead of the night at 50-26 with 6:30 to go in the quarter.  West Central, however, went on a run the remainder of the quarter to close the gap to 66-54 by the end of the quarter.

Noah Vettrus hit a three-point basket, three of his 33 points in the game, with 6:00 to go in the game to pull the Trojans within seven points at 70-61.  That was as close as West Central would get as Dell Rapids was able to hit enough free throws down the stretch to maintain about a 10-point lead and pull out the win 82-70.

Dell Rapids (1-0) will host Tea Area in their next game on Friday, December 18th, as part of a double-header.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Fall to Estelline

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team dropped a close game to Estelline 38-33 on Thursday, December 10th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Lexi Klein led the Cardinals with 10 points in the game.  Kennedi Mullaney finished with six.  Estelline had three players score double figures.  LeAnnah Tekrony, Kaitlyn Steffensen, and Jamie Begalka each had 10 points a piece.

St Mary (0-2) will host Centerville on Tuesday, December 15th, as part of a double-header.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

James “Jim” Fiedler

Jim FiedlerJames Dean “Jim” Fiedler, age 75, longtime Clark area teacher and coach, died at his home early Tuesday morning, December 8, 2015 of a sudden illness. Visitation will be held Friday, December 11, 2015 from 5-8PM at the Furness Funeral Home Chapel at Clark and will continue after 9AM at the church on Saturday. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 10AM at the St. Paul Lutheran Church at Clark with The Reverend Mindy Ehrke officiating.  Condolences may be left at Furness Funeral Home.

Jim was born on a farm near Java, SD on April 16, 1940, the son of Oscar and Olga (Schnaible) Fiedler. He attended the East Ryan Country School near Java and then Java High School, graduating in 1958. While in high school he was active in several sports, a true Java Jet, and also was homecoming king. Following high school he attended and graduated from Northern State College in Aberdeen with a degree in Education.

On September 10, 1961 he was united in marriage to Darlene Schuh at Bowdle. Jim finished his degree at Northern and then in the fall of 1962 they moved to Clark. He taught and coached at Clark for nearly the next 40 years, mentoring hundreds of students over the years, and actually began with the third generation of students. He coached in the Junior High and the High School at Clark, coaching track, cross country, basketball, football and life! During his tenure at Clark, he returned to his education and earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling from South Dakota State. Among subjects he taught was history, government and social studies. He also was a class advisor and C-Club advisor, a Clark Comet, although his Java Jets or his sons, Dell Rapids Quarriers, were never far off of his mind. During the summer months, he enjoyed painting and actually had continued painting home interiors until just recently.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife Darlene in January of 2003 and sister and brother in law, Delores & Orville Walz.

Grateful for having shared in his life are his children, Todd Fiedler of Clark, Doug (Mary) Fiedler of Dell Rapids and Lori Fiedler of Sioux Falls, his three grandchildren, Josh, Haley and Hannah Fiedler all of Dell Rapids and two brothers, Oscar J. (Carol) Fiedler of Aberdeen and Arlyn (Sylvia) Fiedler of Bowdle and nieces and nephews.

G. “Glen” Albers

Glen AlbersG. “Glen” Albers, age 88 of Larchwood, IA died Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 12, 2015 at the Grandview Covenant Church rural Larchwood, IA. Burial will follow at the Grandview Covenant Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, December 11th from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home of Larchwood, IA. Glen was born on November 22, 1927 to parents, George C. and Glayds (Feuerhelm) Albers in Dell Rapids, SD. He grew up in the Dell Rapids area. On February 7, 1949 Glen married Delores Buus and they lived in Dell Rapids, Hilltop area of Sioux Falls, SD and then moved to an acreage near Larchwood, IA in 1963. To this union four boys and three girls were born. Glen and Delores were later divorced. He met Donna Schafer at Solo Parents in Sioux Falls and they were later married on June 9, 1979. Glen was a hard worker and worked various jobs throughout his life, such as the South Dakota Highway Department, he owned and operated a restaurant in Trent, SD, worked at the Stock Yards in Sioux Falls, owned G & D Cattle Company, bought Foster Disposal and later retired from there. He found himself wanting to keep busy, so he went to work for Sioux Falls Ford as a deliveryman for nineteen years. Glen was a member of Grandview Covenant Church rural Larchwood, IA and served as greeter at various times. He enjoyed watching the Minnesota Viking and Minnesota Twin on TV. Glen and his wife Donna also enjoyed traveling to various states in the U.S. and to Europe. Glen loved his grandchildren very much and was good at coming up with nicknames for them

Glen is survived by siblings, Lois Bowen of Nassau, MN, Norma Kelly of La Mirada, CA, and Alice Lyons of Sioux Falls, SD; sons, Gary (Joan) Albers of Gatesville, TX, Gene (Becky) Albers of Larchwood, IA, Grant Albers of Sioux Falls, SD, Giles (Stacy) Albers of Storm Lake, IA; daughters, Gale (John) Viereck of Larchwood, IA, Gwen (Donald) Van Veldhuizen of Larchwood, IA, step-sons, Douglas (Marge) Schafer of Mobridge, SD, Darryl (Lisa) Knight Schafer of Newtown, ND, Jon Schafer of Sioux Falls, SD; step-daughters, Cindy (Larry) Fernholz of Wessington, SD, Jan Campbell of Sioux Falls, SD; 26 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 6 great great-grandchildren and one on the way; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harry, Lloyd, and George; one sister, Clazina; step-son, Jay Schafer; grandson, Dylan Albers; daughter, Ginger Doherty; ex-wife, Delores and wife, Donna; and daughter-in law, Ute Albers.

Quarrier Girls Cruise to Season-Opening Win

NewDRLogoAfter a slow start, the Dell Rapids Quarriers cruised to a 62-35 win over the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers in girls basketball action on Tuesday, December 8th, at Sioux Falls Christian High School.

The Chargers held a 16-11 lead after the first quarter, but the Quarrier defense held Sioux Falls Christian to just 19 points in the remaining three quarters of the game.  Dell Rapids outscored the Chargers 15-2 in the second quarter to take a 26-18 lead at halftime.  The Quarriers pushed their lead to 45-27 after the third quarter.

Mikaela Stofferahn led the Quarriers with 23 points and six rebounds.  Averi Pankonen had 11 points, and Emma Paul finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

Dell Rapids (1-0) will host McCook Central/Montrose on Monday, December 14th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

JV Results:

The Quarrier JV team earned a 52-11 win over Sioux Falls Christian.  Aspen Hansen had 14 points and nine rebounds.  Kaylee Hennen and Kali Graham both had nine points, and Tiffanie Dorale had three assists.

C Team Results:

The Quarrier C Team also picked up a win against the Chargers.  Dell Rapids won 25-13.  Jayda Knuppe had 11 points, while Jenae Schoeberl finished with six points.

Garretson Defeats Cardinal Girls in Season-Opener

DRSM LogoThe Garretson Blue Dragons earned a 52-41 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in the season-opening game of the girls season on Tuesday, December 8th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively in the first quarter, scoring a combined 15 points.  Garretson held a 10-5 lead after the first quarter.  The offense picked up in the second quarter, and the Blue Dragons headed to the locker room at halftime ahead 25-13.  The Blue Dragons were able to push their lead to 13 points by the end of the third quarter at 39-26.  The Cardinals were able to close the gap early in the fourth quarter, but Garretson was able to hang on for the 52-41 win.

St Mary finished the game shooting 25.5% (14-55) from the field, 33.3% (4-12) from three-point area, and 64.3% (9-14) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had a total of 41 rebounds, 12 assists and 12 turnovers.

Kennedi Mullaney led the Cardinals with 16 points and nine rebounds.  Jackie Wolles had 11 points and two rebounds, while Lexi Klein finished with eight points and seven rebounds.  Sydney Cook led the team with four assists.

The Cardinals (0-1) will host Estelline on Thursday, December 10th.

Gerry Mechtenberg

Gerry MechtenbergGerald “Gerry” F. Mechtenberg, 84, Mitchell, formerly of Parkston, died Sunday, December 6, 2015 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday December 10, 2015 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Parkston. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7:00 PM with a scripture service at 7:00 PM at the Bittner Funeral Chapel. Condolences may be left at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Gerry was born October 16, 1931 to Leo and Louise (Nuebel) Mechtenberg at their family farm. He attended 1st thru 8th grade at Sacred Heart School in Parkston and graduated from Parkston High School in 1949. He served in the Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean conflict from 1952-1954.

He married Joyce Strohmayer on November 23, 1954. She died in January, 1980. Together they had seven children. Gerry was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the V.F.W. He farmed north of Parkston for over 45 years. Jerry enjoyed talking about farming, watching sports and visiting with family and friends.

Gerry married Marilyn (Taft) Bauer on December 30, 1982. He moved to Mitchell in 1986 and became a member of Holy Spirit Church.

Gerry was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Joyce in 1980, son, Scott in 1998 and son-in-law, Jay Hansen in 2010.

Quarrier Wrestling Hosts Top of the Rock Tournament

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team hosted the “Top of the Rock” tournament on Saturday, December 5th, at Dell Rapids High School.  Dell Rapids finished sixth with a team score of 72.5.  Adrian placed first with a score of 229.5.  Beresford was second with 198.0 points, and McCook Central/Montrose was third with 150.0 points.

Ashley Riibe

Ashley RiibeAshley Jeannette (Allphin) Riibe was born on April 30, 1985 and passed away on November 30, 2015 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD following a tragic automobile accident. A memorial service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2015 in the Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel on the Mt. Marty Campus, Yankton, SD. Visitation with the family present will be two hours prior to the start of the service. The Washington memorial service will take place on Sunday, December 13th 2015 at 2pm at Mason Unity Methodist Church, 2710 Madison Street, Tacoma, WA. On-line condolences may be left at Kahler Funeral Home.

Ashley was raised in Gig Harbor, WA. She entered this world as a premature baby, but never slowed down and was skiing at the age of three. Many memories were made on Crystal Mountain and at her family’s “Moose Camp” cabin.

After graduating from high school, Ashley earned a bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion from Montana State University. During this time she worked summers at an Alaskan fishing resort, and also met the love of her life Erin “Chummy” Riibe. From there a new journey began that brought them to Yankton, SD. They married and continued on with their education. Ashley fulfilled a passion for helping others by earning a nursing degree from Mount Marty College. She graduated, with honors, in May of 2015. After a final summer trip to Shelter Cove in Alaska, Ashley came back home to start her dream job as an ICU nurse at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Ashley loved every moment of her nursing experience and always felt truly at home providing critical care to those in need. She had planned to further her career by completing the Mount Marty nurse anesthesia graduate program. Although her life was cut short, Ashley still continues to care for others. Through tissue donation Ashley will be helping over 80 patients in need.

The activities Ashley enjoyed are endless. She loved skiing, hunting, fishing, music, nature, hiking, traveling and more. She was a generous aunt to her nephew and nieces. She was a daughter. She was a sister. She was a wife. She was a friend. And she will be missed.

Ashley is survived by her husband, Erin “Chummy” Riibe of Yankton, SD; her parents Jim and Jackie (Jansen) Allphin of Gig Harbor, WA; her brother Sean M. Allphin of Gig Harbor, WA; her mother and father-in-law Gary and Denise(Will) Riibe of Dakota City, NE; her brother and sister-in-law Gary Jr. and Kelly Riibe and their children Mia, Mallory and Graham; her paternal grandparents James and Jeannette (Smith) Allphin of Tacoma, WA; her grandmother-in-law Donna (Olsen) Riibe of South Sioux City, NE, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Ashley is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Evelyn (Rediske) Arthur and John D. Jansen, and her aunt Joan E. Lane.
