Gamecocks and Wood Ducks Play in Series of Games

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks and Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks amateur baseball teams played three games each Friday, May 13th through Sunday, May 15th.

The Gamecocks finished the weekend going 2-1 in their three games.  In their game on May 13th, the Gamecocks defeated the Renner Rangers.  The Gamecocks had a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning and went on to defeated Renner 12-2.  On Saturday the Gamecocks hosted the Garretson Blue Jays with the Blue Jays getting the 6-3 win.  The weekend finished with the start of the Cornbelt League season.  The Gamecocks hosted the Madison Broncos and kicked of the league season with an 11-4 victory.

The Wood Ducks finished their weekend 0-3 in their three games.  On Friday the Wood Ducks hosted the LCW (Lennox-Chancellor-Worthing) Dirt Devils.  The Dirt Devils took the win 5-1 in that game.  Saturday’s game for the Wood Ducks was against the Winner/Colome Pheasants.  The Pheasants took a 14-1 win over the Wood Ducks.  The final game of the weekend was also the start of the Cornbelt League season.  The Wood Ducks fell to Dell Rapids PBR 5-2.

Both teams are back in action on Thursday, May 19th in Cornbelt League play.  The Wood Ducks will host the Colman A’s while the Gamecocks travel to Dell Rapids to play the Mudcats.

Four Run Sixth Inning Lifts Dell Rapids to Win over Tea

With the game tied 2-2, Dell Rapids scored four times in the top of the sixth inning to help them to a 6-2 win at Tea on Saturday, May 14th.  This was the first game for Dell Rapids in almost a week due to weather postponements.

Dell Rapids scored right away in the top of the first inning when Dylan Mathis drove home Jack Henry with a double.  Henry scored again in the top of the third inning after Treyse Eastman grounded into a fielder’s choice.  Tea tied the game in the bottom of the third with two runs.   The score remained 2-2 until the top of the sixth inning.

Will Jaton drove home the first run of the inning on a single to center field.  Jaton and Braeden Fersdahl both scored a couple of batters later on a wild pitch.  Mathis got his second RBI double of the game later in the inning to give Dell Rapids a 6-2 lead.  Tea got the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Landon Ruesink was able to induce a ground ball to shortstop Henry who flipped the ball to Jaton at second for the final out.

Mathis had four doubles and two RBIs to lead Dell Rapids offensively.  Henry had four singles and scored three times.  Jaton had a single and an RBI.  CJ Smith finished with a double.  Ruesink had a hit, and Eastman had an RBI.  Henry pitched the first 4 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on four hits with six walks and 11 strikeouts.  Ruesink earned the win pitching 2 1/3 innings allowing no hits and two walks while striking out four.

Tri-Valley Baseball Wins Two of Three Straight Games

The Tri-Valley High School club baseball team played three games in three straight days Friday, May 13th through Sunday, May 15th. Tri-Valley played Sioux Falls Christian Friday, Tea Saturday, and Flandreau/Chester Sunday winning two of those games.

Tri-Valley 6, Sioux Falls Christian 2

Tri-Valley scored six unanswered runs and led 6-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning and hung on for a 6-2 win over Sioux Falls Christian on Friday, May 13th.

Connor Christensen had a two-run double in the top of the third inning giving Tri-Valley an early 2-0 lead. Christensen drove home another run with a single in the top of the fifth, and Barrett Althoff followed with an RBI double for a 4-0 lead. Everett Althoff had an RBI bunt single in the top of the sixth and later scored on a passed ball giving Tri-Valley a 6-0 lead. Sioux Falls Christian got a single run in the sixth and seventh innings.

Christensen had two hits, one a double, and three RBIs. Noah Haynes and Riley Carlson both had two doubles each. B. Althoff had a double and an RBI. E. Althoff had a hit and an RBI. Cole Focken and Lawson Loiseau each had a hit as well. Tyler Groenewold pitched all seven innings allowing two runs, both unearned, on five hits with a walk while striking out seven.

Tea Area 10, Tri-Valley 3

Tea scored eight times in the first two innings on their way to an 10-3 win over Tri-Valley on Saturday, May 14th.

Tri-Valley scored two times in the top of the first inning. Christensen reached on an error that scored Carter Sorenson and Riley Carlson. Tea’s offense responded with six runs in the bottom of the first inning and two more in the second for an 8-2 lead. They scored another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tri-Valley got back on the board with a run in the top of the sixth. Loiseau scored on a wild pitch.

Carlson, B. Althoff, and Loiseau each had a single for Tri-Valley’s three total hits. Kaden Egger pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing eight runs, five earned, on 10 hits with two strikeouts. Alex Wingen pitched two innings allowing two runs, one earned, on a hit and three walks while striking out three.

Tri-Valley 13, Flandreau/Chester 9

Tri-Valley scored nine times in the top of the seventh inning for a 13-9 come-from-behind win over Flandreau/Chester on Sunday, May 15th.

Flandreau/Chester scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Tri-Valley took the lead in the top of the second with three runs. Christsen scored on a fielder’s choice ground ball by Haynes. Wingen had an RBI single, and Haynes scored on a passed ball. The lead was short-lived as Flandreau/Chester scored five times in the bottom of the second for a 6-3 lead. Groenewold scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth inning to pull Tri-Valley within two at 6-4. Flandreau/Chester added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 9-4 lead.

Tri-Valley’s offense took advantage of opportunities in the top of the seventh. Flandreau/Chester committed five errors and allowed three walks. Tri-Valley had three hits on top of that while scoring nine times. Sorensen had a two-run double. Christensen reached on an error that scored two more runs to cut the lead to 9-8. Haynes had an RBI single to tie the game 9-9. Wingen reached on an error that scored the go-ahead run. Loiseau drew a bases-loaded walk, and Carlson reached on an error that scored the final two runs.

Sorenson had a double and two RBIs. Haynes and Wingen both had a hit and two RBIs each. Loiseau had a single and an RBI. Carlson and Groenewold each had a single. Christensen added two RBIs as well. Carlson pitched four innings allowing nine runs, only three earned, on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Sorenson pitched three innings of no-hit baseball while walking two and striking out six batters.

Mustang Girls Golf Back in Action at Madison, Buchmann 14th

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls golf team was back in action on Thursday, May 12th at the Madison Invitational.  The Mustangs finished with a team score of 449.

Stephanie Buchmann had a 14th place individually with a round of 97.  Ivy Haug finished with a 102.  Payton Oberg had a round of 108, and Hillary Hastings finished with a round of 142.

Tri-Valley will travel to Bakker Crossing in Sioux Falls for the Dak-12 Conference Tournament on Monday, May 23rd.

Quarrier Girls Golf Finishes 3rd in Madison

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team placed third at the Madison Invite on Thursday, May 12th.  The Quarriers finished with a team score of 411.  Sioux Valley won with a score of 388.  Madison was second at 389.

Abby Greenhoff tied for fourth individually with a round of 92.  Emma Taubert tied for 15th at 98.  Jayme Schmidt finished with a round of 108.  Avery Haskell had a 113.  Natalie Berg finished with 116, and Haley Rydell had a 128.

Cardinal Girls Finish 4th at DVC Track Meet, Boys Place 7th

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal track teams traveled to De Smet for the Dakota Valley Conference track meet on Thursday, May 12th. The girls finished fourth as a team with 72 points. The boys team placed seventh with 61 points.

Three athletes came home with conference titles in their respective events. Madala Hanson won the 1600m run. Jaycee Tebay won the discus, and Nic Gaspar took first in the high jump.

Ella Griffin (100m dash), Brianna Griffin (200m dash), Hanson (400m dash), and E. Griffin (discus) all had third place finishes. B. Griffin finished fourth in the 100m dash, and Maya Heinitz was also fourth in the 400m dash.

Lucas Flemmer had two second place finishes in the 100m dash and 200m dash. Flemmer also placed third in the 400 dash. Gaspar took second in the 300m hurdles. John Pica finished third in the discus.

Garretson Squeaks by Tri-Valley in Extra Innings

Tri-Valley came from behind to tie the game and send it to extra innings, but Garretson got two runs in the ninth inning while holding Tri-Valley to one for a 7-6 victory on Monday, May 9th.

Tri-Valley took the early lead in the bottom of the second inning. Lawson Loiseau reached on an error that scored Noah Haynes for the 1-0 lead. Garretson, however, scored four times in the top of the third for a 4-1 lead. Tri-Valley got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth. Carter Sorenson hit a two run double to pull Tri-Valley within a run, 4-3.

Garretson got another run in the top of the fifth inning and led 5-3 after five full innings. Tri-Valley was able to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Cole Focken laced an RBI double to center field and then scored later in the inning on an error to tie the game 5-5.

The score remained tied 5-5 until the ninth inning. Garretson put together three straight hits with two outs to score two runs for a 7-5 lead. Tri-Valley put together a two-out rally of their own in the bottom of the ninth. Loiseau scored after a walk and two straight errors to make it a 7-6 game. Tri-Valley had the bases loaded, but the game ended on a ground out to third base.

Sorenson had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Focken had a double and an RBI. Riley Carlson, Barrett Althoff, and Everett Althoff all had singles in the game. Carlson pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Sorenson pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Mustang Girls Golf Plays in West Central Invite

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls golf team traveled to Hartford for the West Central Invite on Monday, May 9th. The Mustangs finished with a team score of 456.

Stephanie Buchmann had the low round for the Mustangs at 101. Peyton Oberg finished with a round of 110. Ivy Haug had a 119, and Hillary Hastings had a round of 126.

West Central Baseball Wins Fourth Straight

West Central won their fourth straight game after a 7-3 win over Sioux Falls Christian on Tuesday, May 10th.

West Central took an early four run lead after the first two innings.  Caden Alfson drove home two runs in the first inning with a single.  Logan Maras had a solo home run, and Grafton Stroup added an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning.

Sioux Falls Christian got a run in the top of the third inning and then added two more in the top of the fourth inning to pull within a run, 4-3.  The score remained 4-3 until the bottom of the sixth.  Duece Sherrard had a two-run triple, and Stroup followed with an RBI triple to put West Central ahead 7-3.

Sherrard had three hits, including the triple, and two RBIs.  Stroup had two hits, one a triple, and two RBIs.  Alfson also had two hits and two RBIs.  Maras finished with a home run and an RBI, and Gavin Koch had a single.  Andrew Zimmer pitched all seven innings allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks while striking out six.

West Central Girls Golf Sixth at Home Invite

The West Central Trojan girls golf team hosted the West Central Invite on Monday, May 9th. The Trojans finished sixth with a team score of 396.

Kaylee Olson tied for 16th individually with a round of 95. Dakotah Larson had a round of 97. Lyric Riepma had a 101. Blaire Eberhard finished one stroke behind at 102. Morgyn Driscoll had a round of 115, and Lauren Prchal had a 139.
