Humboldt/Hartford Legion Wins Two of Three over Weekend

The Humboldt/Hartford legion baseball team played three games in three days from Friday, June 17th through Sunday, June 19th.

Humboldt/Hartford 1, Big Stone 0

Seth Gabbert threw a no-hitter for Humboldt/Hartford while recording 13 strikeouts, and Andrew Zimmer had the game-winning RBI single in the top of the seventh in a 1-0 win over Big Stone on Friday.

Humboldt/Hartford had at total of six hits in the game, two of them coming in the top of the seventh.  Loren Jacobsen had a one-out single.  Gavin Koch laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Jacobsen to second, and then Zimmer delivered a two-out RBI single to left field scoring Jacobson for the game winner.

Jacobsen had two hits.  Zimmer also had two hits and an RBI.  Deuce Sherrard and Jack Linneman both had hits as well.  Gabbert threw all seven innings and allowed just one walk with his 13 strikeouts.

Redfield 7, Humboldt/Hartford 3

Redfield scored seven unanswered runs early in the game in a 7-3 win on Saturday over Humboldt/Hartford.  The first four runs for Redfield came in the bottom of the second.  They added another in the bottom of the third, and two more in the bottom of the fourth.

Humboldt/Hartford got one run in the top of the fifth.  Braden Herr reached on an error that also scored Jacobsen.  Two more runs came home in the top of the sixth.  Gabbert scored on a passed ball, and Derek Renken had an RBI single.

Renken had a single and RBI.  Bennett Sebert finsihed with two hits.  Jacobsen, Koch, and Gage Nelson all had a hit.  Zimmer pitched three innings and allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits with one strikeout.  Owen Heath also pitched three innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Humboldt/Hartford 10, Salem 0

Humboldt/Hartford came back strong on Sunday with a 10-0 win in five innings over Salem.  Koch pitched all five innings allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out five.

Sebert broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the third with an RBI single.  Jacobsen had an RBI single in the inning as well for an early 2-0 lead.  Nelson had an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to give Humboldt/Hartford a 3-0 advantage.  Humboldt/Hartford took advantage of four Salem errors, two hits batters, and a walk and scored seven times to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Nelson had two hits and two RBIs.  Sherrard had a double and three RBIs.  Jacobsen and Sebert both had a single and an RBI.  Camden McDonald also had a hit in the game.

Gamecocks’ Five-Run Sixth Leads to Win over Flandreau

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks used a five-run sixth inning to lift them to an 8-1 win over the Flandreau Cardinals on Thursday, June 16th.

Cam Quigley brought home the first run in the top of the third with an RBI ground out for a 1-0 lead.  The score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth inning.  The Gamecocks then scored five times.  Joe Hanisch had an RBI sacrifice fly.  Adam Hentges added an RBI single to make the score 3-0.  Noah Vettrus followed with a two-run single, and Zach Treiber had an RBI double to push the lead to 6-0.

Flandreau’s lone run in the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning on a balk.  The Gamecocks added two more runs in the top of the ninth on RBI hits by Devon Garry and Hanisch.

Hanisch had three hits, two of them doubles, and two RBIs.  Vettrus had two doubles and two RBIs.  Quigley and Treiber both had two hits each, which included a double, and one RBI.  Garry and Hentges both had a single and an RBI.  Broc Haldeman, Kyle Bailey, and Clayton Hanisch all had one single.  Cole Barthel pitched six innings and allowed no runs on six hits.  Landry Knight pitched three innings and allowed an earned run on three walks with one strikeout.

PBR Wins Marathon Game Against Colman

The final score will read 11-3 in favor of Dell Rapids PBR, but the game took 17 innings to get to that point in Colman on Thursday, June 16th.  Both Dell Rapids PBR and Colman scored two runs each late in the game, and then remained tied 3-3 four eight innings.

Beau Behrend had an RBI single in the top of the second to give PBR an early 1-0 lead.  Colman tied the game in the bottom of the fourth.  The score remained 1-1 until the top of the eighth.  Teagan Schlimgen scored on a passed ball, and Behrend scored on an error to give the lead back to PBR, 3-1.  Colman got one run back on an RBI groundout, and then the tying run with two outs to send the game into extra innings.

Colman put together many threats in extra innings.  They had a runner on second with two outs in the 11th and 13th innings, but were unable to score.  Colman then loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 14th, but Trey Randel got a strikeout to leave the bases full and keep the game going.

PBR finally broke through in the top of the 17th.  Back-to-back singles, and walk, and an RBI single by Conner Spindler broke the 3-3 tie.  Dell Rapids continued to ride the momentum and the next three batters reached pushing the score to 8-3.  They would score three more times before their half of the inning was done.

Riley Calhoon had three hits.  Behrend had two hits and two RBIs.  Weston Hanson, Spindler, and Randel all had two singles and an RBI.  Grant Sweeter had two hits, one a double.  Riley Hoffman also had two hits.  Schlimgen and Tim Wilhelmson both had a single.

Hoffman pitched the first seven innings and allowed an unearned run on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.  Randel pitched the final 10 innings and allowed two runs, both unearned, on five hits and six walks while recording 12 strikeouts.

Mudcats Snap Five-Game Skid

The Dell Rapids Mudcats got back into the win column, snapping a five-game losing streak, with a 12-1 win over Madison on Thursday, June 16th.

Dell Rapids scored two runs in the second inning, three more in the third, and another in the sixth for a 6-0 lead.  Madison got their only run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The Mudcats then picked up two more runs in the seventh and four in the eighth.

Kris Regas had three hits and an RBI.  Mark Abrahamson had a two-run home run in the game.  Ty Hoglund finished with a double and two RBIs.  Trevor Freudenthal, Dalton Allen, and Elijah Story all had hits.  Logan Stone had an RBI. 

Regas earned the win on the mound allowing one run on four hits while striking out 18 batters.

Wood Ducks Fall to Larchwood in Showcase

The Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks hosted the Larchwood Diamonds in the Sunshine League / Cornbelt League Showcase on Saturday, June 18th.  Larchwood took a 5-3 win over the Wood Ducks.

The game was tied 2-2 heading into the to of the seventh inning.  Larchwood scored three times in the top of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead.  The Wood Ducks were only able to get one run back and left the bases loaded to end the game.  Humboldt/Hartford let a total of 10 runners on base in the game.

Logan Larson pitched 6 1/3 innings for the Wood Ducks, and Presten Riddle pitched 2/3 of an inning.  JJ Jesson had a double.  Austin Smith finished with a single and an RBI, and Rob Lind also had a single.

Baltic Legion Scores Nine in Seventh for Win over Colton

Baltic scored in every inning, including nine runs in the seventh, in a 14-3 over Colton on Thursday, June 16th in Colton.

Both teams scored in the first inning.  Baltic scored on an RBI sacrifice fly, while Colton tied the game on an error in the bottom of the inning.  The two teams each scored a run in the second inning as well.  Aiden Heitkamp had an RBI ground out for Colton.  The game was tied 2-2 after two innings of play.

Baltic got a single run in the top of the third and one more in the top of the fourth for a 4-2 lead.  After Baltic was held scoreless in the top of the fifth, Lawson Louiseu drove home a run with an RBI fielder’s choice.  Baltic pushed the lead to 5-3 with a run in the top of the sixth.  They blew the game open with nine runs in the top of the seventh.

Heitkamp finished a hit and an RBI.  Cole Focken had two hits, and Joshua Lieseth had a double.  Noah Haynes and Barrett Althoff both had a single, while Louiseu added an RBI.  Kaden Egger pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts.  Riley Carlson pitched two innings and allowed three earned runs on thee hits and six walks with three strikeouts.  Nathan Madison pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed six runs, all unearned, on three hits and two walks with a strikeout.

Tri-Valley Maroon 14U Has Big Rally in Sixth for Win

The Tri-Valley Maroon 14U team put together a big rally in the bottom of the sixth inning against Sioux Falls Christian on Wednesday, June 15th.  Tri-Valley trailed 12-7 going into the bottom of the sixth, but scored 13 times and took the 20-14 win.

Sioux Falls Christian scored four runs in the top of the first inning.  Tri-Valley got half of those runs back and trailed 4-2 after the first inning.  Sioux Falls Christian scored the next five runs, four in the second and one in the third, to pus the lead to 9-2.

Tri-Valley got scored a run in the bottom of the third inning and another in the bottom of the fourth.  They trailed 9-4 after four innings of play.  Sioux Falls Christian put together a two-run inning in the top of the fifth.  Tri-Valley countered with three in the bottom of the inning to make the score 11-7.  After another run by Sioux Falls Christian in the top of the sixth, Tri-Valley then scored 13 times in the sixth inning.  Sioux Falls Christian scored twice in the top of the seventh.

Treyson Richter had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs.  Mason Hemme also had two hits, one a double, and three RBIs.  Cole Hendrixson had a triple and a double with an RBI.  Parker Hemme finished with a single and RBI.  Dylan Christensen, Tristen Bunde, and Kaiden Bernards all had a hit.  Denton Bicknase had two RBIs.

Hendrixson pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed eight runs, four earned, on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts.  Bernards pitched three innings and allowed three runs, two eanred, on two hits and four walks with three strikeouts.  Jackson Williams pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing three earned runs on two hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

Dell Rapids Legion Wins Battle of Champions

The 2022 South Dakota High School Class B Champions, Dell Rapids, hosted the 2022 North Dakota High School Class B Champions, Thompson Tommies, in a legion baseball game at Rickeman Field on Thursday, June 16th.  The was just as good as the hype leading up to it.

Jack Henry drove home the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI fielder’s choice.  Thompson tied the game with a run in the top of the second.  The Tommies broke the tie with a run in the top of the fourth, and then they added two more in the top of the sixth for a 4-1 lead.

Dell Rapids then put together a rally in the bottom of the sixth.  Aiden Boechler drove in two runs with a single to cut the lead to 4-3.  CJ Smith gave Dell Rapids the lead with a two-run single to center field.  Thompson got two runners on base with two outs, but the game ended with a ground out to Smith at first.

Landon Ruesink had two hits.  Boechler and Smith both had a single and two RBIs each.  Brayden Pankonen, Dylan Mathis, and Joe Rechtenbaugh all had singles.  Henry finished with an RBI.  Treyse Eastman started on the mound and pitched four innings allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  Henry got the win with three innings pitched.  He allowed two unearned runs on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

West Central 16U Falls to Dell Rapids

Dell Rapids 16U scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 3-3 tie and get a 5-3 win over West Central 16U at home on Thursday, June 16th.

Dell Rapids scored the first two runs of the game, a run in the bottom of the first and another in the bottom of the second.  West Central got three runs in the top of the fourth.  Jesse Jost, Keaton Vessells, and Will Nester all scored on ground ball errors in the inning for a 3-2 lead.

A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning for Dell Rapids tied the game at 3-3.  Dell Rapids then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with two runs, which proved to be the difference in the game.

Cain Grocott had a single and was credited with an RBI.  Vessells, Ty Sichmeller, and Landen Holewa each had a hit.  Maison Schuldt was also credited with an RBI.  Jost pitched three innings and allowed three runs, all unearned, on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Nester pitched an inning and recorded two strikeouts.  Grocott pitched two innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

Two Late Runs Gives Dell Rapids 16U Victory over West Central

Dell Rapids 16U scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 3-3 tie and get a 5-3 win over West Central 16U at home on Thursday, June 16th.

Dell Rapids scored the first two runs of the game.  Tad Tjaden scored on a double-play in the bottom of the first inning, and then Tjaden drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the second for a 2-0 lead.  West Central got two runs on an error in the top of the fourth and then got an RBI ground out to take a 3-2 lead.

Lincoln Fersdahl was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded to tie the game 3-3.  Dell Rapids then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Grady Lamer had an RBI bunt, and Carson Crosby reached on an error that scored Lamer.

Tjaden had two hits and an RBI.  Fersdahl had a hit and RBI.  Cole Ruesink finished with a double.  Sutton Williams, Cooper Frost, and Quinn Carr all had singles.  Lamer and Crosby each had an RBI.  Konrad Richeal pitched four innings and allowed three unearned runs on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  Crosby pitched three innings giving up two hits and four walks with five strikeouts.
