Second Half Surge Lifts Cardinal Boys

DRSM LogoA second half surge sent the Cardinal fans home happy on Friday, January 12th.  The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals boys basketball team defeated the Lake Preston Divers 77-51 at Lake Preston High School.

After trailing by six points at 18-12 in the first quarter, the St Mary Cardinals were able to get the game tied at 30-30 at halftime.  From that point forward, the St Mary Cardinals dominated.  St Mary outscored Lake Preston 23-10 in the third quarter for a 53-40 third quarter lead.  The Cardinals then scored 24 points in the fourth quarter while holding the Divers to just 11 points as St Mary cruised to the victory.

Three players finished in double figures for the Cardinals.  Connor Libis finished the game with 23 points.  Max Herber added 20 points, and Luke Brown tallied 17 points.

St Mary (5-3) will play Lake Preston again in Lake Preston on Monday, January 15th.  The Cardinals and Divers will meet in the opening round of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament at 6:00 p.m.

Parker Stops Cardinal Boys Win Streak

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team head their four-game win streak snapped on Tuesday, January 9th . The Cardinals lost to Class A Parker Pheasants 73-40 at Parker High School.

St Mary trailed by only five points after the first quarter at 17-12, but Parker pushed the lead to 11 points at 35-24 at halftime.  Parker then used a 30-12 third quarter difference to take complete control of the game.  The Pheasants led 65-36 after the third quarter.  Parker then outscored St Mary 8-4 in the final quarter.

The Cardinals shot 31% from the field in the game, but just 21% from three-point area and 33% from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had 22 team rebounds and 10 steals.

Connor Libis had a team-high 17 points.  Luke Brown added seven points.  Connar Kangas had six points.  Weston Geraets had a team-high three steals, and Max Herber had a team-high seven rebounds.  Parker was led by Trey Christensen with 19 points.

St Mary (4-3) will travel to Lake Preston for a double-header with the girls on Friday, January 12th.  Both games of the double-header can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Make it Four in a Row

DRSM LogoAfter starting the season with a couple of tough losses, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team is climbing the Region 4B standings.  The Cardinals won their fourth game in a row after a 60-58 win over the Deubrook Area Dolphins on Friday, January 5th at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Weston Geraets set the tone early for the Cardinals with five first-quarter points along with multiple steals and blocked shots on defense.  St Mary held a nine-point lead at 20-11 after the first quarter.  The Dolphins battled back in the second quarter scoring 17 points and briefly took the lead.  The Cardinals, however, would get it back by halftime and led 31-28 after two quarters of play.  St Mary extended their lead to six points at 44-38 after the third quarter.  The fourth quarter proved to be full of excitement as the Dolphins trailed the Cardinals by just two points with :45 to go at 55-53.  Two made free throws late in the game by Connor Libis sealed the win for St Mary as they outlasted Deubrook for the win.

Connor Libis had his second 30-point game of the season in the win.  Libis finished with 33 points in the game.  Luke Brown added 13 points for the Cardinals.  Deubrook was led by Jack Bandemer with 16 points.

St Mary (4-2) will travel to Parker to take on the Pheasants on Tuesday, January 9th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys on Three Game Winning Streak

DRSMvsELB_BBB_12-30-17The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team won their third straight game of the year at the Entringer Classic in Brookings on Saturday, December 30th.  The Cardinals defeated the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks 64-49.

After the Elks had a 5-2 lead with 5:47 to go in the first quarter, the Cardinals finished the quarter on a 23-8 run to take a 25-13 lead after the first quarter.  The Elks cut the lead a little by halftime.  St Mary led 36-27 at the break.  The Elks opened the third quarter on a 7-3 run to cut the lead to five points with 5:24 to play, but St Mary answered with a 9-4 run to end the quarter and extend their lead to 48-38 at the end of the third quarter.  St Mary then outscored the Elks 16-11 in the final quarter for the win.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 38% from the field, 42% from three-point area, and 67% from the free-throw line.  St Mary had 31 total team rebounds, 10 assists, six steals, and only turned the ball over nine times in the game.

Connor Libis, named the game’s MVP, finished with 22 points, seven assists, and two rebounds.  Connar Kangas had 18 points and two rebounds.  Luke Brown also finished in double figures with 15 points and had three rebounds.  Max Herber had nine rebounds in the game, and Weston Geraets had seven rebounds.

St Mary (3-2) will host Deubrook Area on Friday, January 5th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Even Record with Win over De Smet

DRSMvsDeSmet_BBB_12-19-17The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals earned a one-point, come-from-behind, exciting win over the De Smet Bulldogs Tuesday, December 19th at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The Cardinals held on for a 63-62 Dakota Valley Conference win.

The Cardinals found themselves in an early deficit.  De Smet held a seven-point lead after the first quarter at 19-12.  The lead grew to eight points at 26-18 early in the second quarter.  However, the Cardinals went on an 11-0 run to take a 29-26 lead.  St Mary held on to the lead throughout the rest of the quarter and led 33-31 at halftime.

De Smet battled back in third quarter and regained the lead.  The Bulldogs led 47-46 heading into the final quarter.  The Cardinals went on a 12-4 run in the first 3:30 of the quarter to take a 58-51 lead with 4:30 to play.  De Smet answered with a 4-0 run over the next two minutes to cut the lead to 58-55 with 2:30 to play.  St Mary continued to hold the lead and was ahead 62-57 with just :43 left in the game.  The Bulldogs converted on a three-point play to get themselves within two points at 62-60 with :30 to go.  Weston Geraets made one of two free throws to push the lead to 63-60 with :17 remaining.  De Smet made a bucket with :06 to play to make the score 63-62.  The Bulldogs quickly fouled with :03.5 remaining.  St Mary missed both free throws, and De Smet grabbed the defensive rebound.  The last second shot at the buzzer from the top of the key was no good, and the St Mary Cardinals held on for the one-point victory.

Connor Libis led all scorers with 35 points in the game.  De Smet had three players in double figures led by Gage Gruenhagen with 17 points.

St Mary (2-2) will travel to McCook Central/Montrose on Thursday, December 21st.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

St Mary Boys Notch First Win of Season

DRSM LogoAfter a couple of tough games to start the season, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team earned their first win of the season on Friday, December 15th.  The Cardinals defeated the Estelline Redmen 63-47 in Estelline.  The Cardinals led at every quarter break in the game.

St Mary led 20-11 at the end of the first quarter.  They continued to increase the lead in the second quarter by outscoring Estelline 17-9 to take a 37-20 lead at halftime.  The Cardinals lead 53-34 after three quarters of play and held their largest lead of the game at 22 points with 7:16 to play in the game.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 32% from the field, 15% from beyond the three-point line, and 68% from the free-throw line.  St Mary had a total of 50 team rebounds, nine team steals, and turned the ball over 15 times.

Max Herber finished the game with a double-double for St Mary.  Herber had 26 points and 13 rebounds.  Connor Libis had 16 points and two steals.  Luke Brown also finished in double figures with 11 points and had seven rebounds.  Weston Geraets had eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Cardinals (1-2) will host De Smet on Tuesday, December 19th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Third Quarter Lifts #1 Huskies Past Cardinals

DRSM LogoA 10-point difference in the third quarter helped the #1 team in Class B boys basketball, the Bridgewater-Emery Huskies, to a 69-54 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Monday, December 11th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The two teams traded the lead six times, but the third quarter proved to be the difference in the game.

The Huskies held a four-point lead after the first quarter at 19-15.  The lead stayed at four points heading into halftime at 28-24.  The Cardinals cut the lead to one at 28-27 after Connar Kangas started the third quarter with a three-point basket.  After a made free throw by the Huskies, Max Herber chased down an offensive rebound and found Weston Geraets under the basket to tie the game at 29-29 with 6:38 to go in the third quarter.  However, Bridgewater-Emery finished the quarter on a 20-4 run to take a 16-point lead into the fourth quarter at 49-33.  The lead grew to 60-39 with 4:40 to play in the game.  The Cardinals were able to end the game on a 15-9 run.

St Mary finished the game shooting 31% from the field, 25% from three-point area, and 58% from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had a total of 35 team rebounds, six team assists, four team blocks, and four team steals.

Connor Libis finished with a team-high 16 points in the game.  Luke Brown had 12 points.  Geraets had seven points, and Kangas added six points.  Max Herber had a team-high eight rebounds.  Kangas and Brown both had four rebounds each.  Libis had four assists and two steals, while Herber had two blocks.

Cardinal Boys Basketball Falls in Opener to O-R-R

DRSMvsORR_BBB_12-8-17The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team lost their opening game of the 2017-2018 season to the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders by a score of 63-50 on Friday, December 8th.

The game was close throughout the first half.  St Mary got out to a quick lead, but by the end of the first quarter, the Raiders held a 15-14 lead.  The two teams were back and forth throughout the second quarter as well.  O-R-R was able to increase their lead to 31-28 at halftime.  The Raiders slowly started to build their lead late in the third quarter and held a 44-37 advantage after three quarters of play.  The Cardinal shooting went cold until late in the fourth quarter, but  by that time the Raiders built a too large of a lead for St Mary to overcome.

The Cardinals had two players finish in double figures in the game.  Connor Libis finished with 23 points and two rebounds.  Weston Geraets had 10 points and five rebounds.  Luke Brown added nine points and three rebounds.  Connor Kangas had six points, and Max Herber finished with two points.

St Mary (0-1) will host Bridgewater-Emery on Monday, December 11th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

2016-2017 Post Season Basketball Awards

BasketballSeveral players from the Dell Rapids and Dell Rapids St Mary girls and boys basketball teams received post season awards for their play this season.

Jackie Wolles earned an Honorable Mention All-Conference for the Cardinals in the Dakota Valley Conference.  Connor Libis was a First Team All-Conference selection, and Luke Brown was also an Honorable Mention All-Conference player.

Jayda Knuppe and Emma Paul were Second Team All-Conference selections for the Dakota XII Conference.  Arial Hoffman was an Honorable Mention All-Conference.  Knuppe was also a State A All-Tourney selection.  Jeffrey Schuch and Sheldon Siemonsma were Second Team All-Conference selections, and Mason Peter was an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection.

Cardinal Boys Season Ends in Elkton

DRSMvsELB_BBB_2-27-17The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals had their 2016-2017 season come to an end in the opening round of the District 7B tournament on Monday, February 27th, in Elkton.  The Cardinals fell to the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks 46-36.

The Cardinals was able to get a first quarter lead and led 9-8 at the first break.  The Elks grabbed the lead heading into halftime at 20-19.  Elkton-Lake Benton started to pull away in the third quarter as they outscored the Cardinals 15-7 for a 35-26 lead heading into the final quarter.  The Elks then also outscored St Mary 11-10 in the final quarter for the win.

Luke Brown led the Cardinals with nine points.  Zach Geraets added seven points.  Weston Geraets had six points, Connor Libis finished with five points, and Max Herber tossed in four points.

St Mary ends its season with a record of 8-13.
