December 31, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRSMvsChester_GBB_1_12-30-13The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals girls basketball team pulled out an overtime win over the Chester Flyers 51-48 on Monday, December 30th, in Chester.  The Cardinals jumped out to an early seven point lead in the first quarter and led 13-7 after the first break.  However, Chester held St Mary to just four points in the second quarter and took the lead at halftime at 19-17.  The Flyers extended their lead to nine points in the third quarter before St Mary scored the last four points to pull within five at 32-27 at the end of the third quarter.

Then in the fourth quarter, the game really got exciting.  St Mary was with three points at 32-29 with 7:22 left in the game after a Kelly Michel basket.  Neither team scored for nearly two minutes before Chester scored the next five points to take a 37-29 lead with 4:01 to go.  Each team traded points, and the Flyers again had an eight-point lead with 3:30 left in the game at 39-31.  Amber Hansen knocked down a put-back layup with 1:24 left in the game.  After a missed free-throw, Michel hit a three-point shot with :34 left.  Chester’s Logan Miller was fouled with 12.2 second remaining.  She hit the first free-throw, but missed the second, giving the St Mary Cardinals one last chance.  With :00.2 seconds on the clock, Hansen made a shot from the left block and was fouled as time expired.  Her free throw was no good, but the game went into overtime tied at 40-40.

In the overtime session, the two teams were again tied at 42-42 with 2:46 as Hansen stepped to the free-throw line with two shots.  She made both free-throws, and then at the 2:05 mark, Hansen had another rebound and put-back to give the Cardinals a four point lead.  The Flyers tied the game again at 46-46, but Kaitlyn Vortherms hit a shot from the right elbow with :51 left in overtime.  Hansen would again make two more free-throws with 11.4 seconds left to give St Mary a three-point lead and the win.

Hansen led St Mary with 17 points, including the game-tying basket at the buzzer, and six points in overtime.  Michel added 15 points, and Anna Wolles had eight points in the game.  Chester was led by Elena Borah with a game-high 19 points.

Quarrier Girls Win at Parkston Classic

December 29, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Quarrier LogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers defeated the Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers 49-45 at the Parkston Classic on Saturday, December 28th.  Dell Rapids held a 10-point lead at halftime of 18-8.

The Quarriers shot 16-43 (37%) from the field in the game and shot 13-23 (52%) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids had 17 total turnovers and out-rebounded the Cavaliers 26-16 in the game.

Mikaela Stofferahn led the team with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Brittany Kludt added nine points and six rebounds.  Sami Reider tossed in 11 points for Dell Rapids.  Arial Hoffman finished the game with four assists.

Head coach Jeff Dvorak said that his team could take away three or four lessons from the game.  “First little mistakes made early in the game come back to haunt you.  We had at least six easy shots that we missed in the first half that if we make them, Roncalli would’ve been done.  But we missed, they hung around and played a strong 2nd half to give themselves a shot to win.  Second we need players to step up and give us a spark.  We really got that from Megan Miles in the 4th tonight.  Third free throws are huge!  Although our overall percentage wasn’t great, we hit eight big ones in the 4th to close the game out. And finally staying poised at the end of tight games is vital.  We scored about a D+ on this one, but we did enough to win which is important for a young team such as ours,” said Dvorak.

Dell Rapids improves to 3-1 on the year.  The Quarriers will travel to Elk Point-Jefferson for a Dakota 12 Conference game on Saturday, January 4th.

The Sioux Valley Cossacks defeated the Dell Rapids Quarriers 59-52 at the Boys Entringer Classic in Brookings on Saturday, December 28th.  Sioux Valley had a first quarter lead of 16-11, but the Quarriers erased that lead to tie the game at 26-26 heading into halftime.  A tough third quarter for the Quarriers gave Sioux Valley a 43-33 lead after the third quarter.  The Quarriers pulled to within four points a couple of times in the fourth quarter, but the Cossacks were able to knock down enough free throws in the final quarter to hang on for the win.

Dell Rapids shot 22-51 (43%) from the field in the game.  They were 2-12 (17%) from three-point range and 6-10 (60%) from the free throw line.  Meanwhile, Sioux Valley went 18-46 (39%) from the field, while shooting 5-17 (29%) from three-point range and 18-25 (72%) from the free throw line.  Sioux Valley also out-rebounded the Quarriers 30-24 in the ball game.

The Quarriers were led by Ty Hoglund and Ben Hammer who each had 12 points in the game.  Riley Schmidt finished with nine points, and Zach White had eight points.  Cody Nielsen had a team-high six rebounds in the game.  Tayt Vincent had a game-high 19 points for Sioux Valley.  Spencer Hanson finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Head coach Jason Fersdahl said, “I thought we played pretty well in the first half as we battled to a 26-26 tie.  We had good ball movement on offense, and we played very aggressively.  Sioux Valley made a big run on us in the 3rd quarter as they hit some perimeter shots, and we missed some shots we usually make.  I am proud that our team fought back in the 4th quarter, and we had some good opportunities to cut it to a one possession game late, but credit Sioux Valley for consistently hitting their free throws down the stretch and maintaining their lead.  We gave up too many second chance opportunities on offensive rebounds in the second half and good teams really make you pay for those mistakes.”

Dell Rapids falls to 2-1 on the year.  The Quarriers will travel to Elk Point-Jefferson for a Dakota 12 Conference game on Saturday, January 4th.

Hamlin Hands Quarriers First Loss

Dell Rapids shot 9-35 from the field for 26% in the game.  They were 10-22 from the free throw line for 45%.  The Quarriers had 20 rebounds as a team, five assists, five steals, and 22 turnovers.  Hamlin, meanwhile, shot 20-45 from the field for 44%. They were 9-16 from the free throw line for 56%.  The Chargers had 26 team rebounds, 11 assists as a team, 11 steals, and turned the ball over 19 times.

Head coach Jeff Dvorak said, “Today’s game was lost before we even stepped on the court.  Mentally we just did not show up until the 2nd half – and that is too late versus a good team. I believe that we started so well in our first two games and that led to a false sense that we just had to show up and it would happen – obviously, it didn’t ‘happen’ today.  Hamlin has an aggressive team, and we were not ready for that speed.  Young teams such as ours need to face this type of adversity to learn and grow.  We certainly had our confidence rocked today, but in the end we will become tougher and better for it.”

Dell Rapids falls to 2-1 on the year.  The Quarriers next game will be Saturday, December 28th, at the Parkston Classic.  Dell Rapids will take on Aberdeen Roncalli at 2:30 p.m.

Tea is a good team that plays very aggressive defense, and I thought we did a good job of moving the ball to find good scoring opportunities. We were able to work the ball inside to our post players who were able to finish strong at the basket. We knew that Tea would make a strong run at us, and I am proud that our guys responded with a strong 4th quarter; we were able to hit clutch shots down the stretch. We didn’t shoot free throws very well for the night, but Zane hit 5 -6 down the stretch to finish the game.”

Quarrier Boys Open Season with Win

December 16, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Quarrier LogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team picked up a season-opening win against the West Central Trojans on Friday, December 13th, in Hartford by a score of 67-45.  The Quarriers led at every break in the game.  Dell Rapids led 18-9 at the end of the first quarter, 30-19 at halftime, and 49-35 after the third quarter.

Ty Hoglund and Zane Schumaker both scored 18 points in the game.  Schumaker also hit four 3-point field goals.  Cody Nielsen added 10 points, and Ben Hammer finished with eight.  Schumaker had a team-high six assists in the game, and Hoglund dished out five assists.  Zachary Schroeder finished with nine rebounds followed by Hammer who had eight.  Hoglund also finished the game with four steals.

Dell Rapids out-rebounded West Central as a team 35-22.  The Quarriers also had 17 total team assists, 11 team steals, and only turned the ball over 12 times.

Head coach Jason Fersdahl said, “Offensively, we were able to move the ball pretty well to find some good scoring opportunities and we were able to free up some of our perimeter shooters for open looks at the basket.  Our guards did a good job of pushing the ball in transition and our post players ran the floor well.  I was very pleased that we outrebounded West Central as team rebounding has been one of our main early season points of emphasis; Zachary Schroeder and Ben Hammer in particular hit the boards very hard.  Defensively, we were able to put good pressure on the ball at times and Hammer was able to patrol the lane well, finishing the night with 3 blocked shots while altering numerous others.  We need to continue to improve our half court defense and I know our players will keep working hard on that end of the floor all season.”

The JV team also picked up a win against the Trojans by a score of 36-28.

The Quarriers will host Tea in their next game on Friday, December 20th, as part of a girls-boys double header.  Both games will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.
