DeSmet’s Defense Leads to Win over Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoThe DeSmet Bulldog’s held the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals to just 11 first half points on their way to a 42-22 win in girls basketball action on Thursday, December 17th, in DeSmet.  The Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-6 lead after the first quarter and led 29-11 at halftime.  DeSmet also lead 34-13 at the end of the third quarter.

St Mary shot just 14.7% (5-34) from the field in the game and 70.6% (12-17) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had a total of 37 team rebounds, seven steals, four assists, but turned the ball over 30 times.

Jackie Wolles had nine points and nine rebounds in the game.  Sydney Cook also had nine points along with two rebounds.  Abby Burkhart and Lexi Klein each had two points apiece.  Kennedi Mullaney had two assists and four rebounds in the game.

St Mary (0-3) will play Colman-Egan in the Entringer Classic on Saturday, December 19th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

McCook Central/Montrose Rallies for OT Win over Quarrier Girls

NewDRLogoThe McCook Central/Montrose Cougars rallied for a come-from-behind, overtime win against the Dell Rapids Quarriers 66-61 on Monday, December 14th, at Dell Rapids High School.

Dell Rapids took the lead in the first quarter and led 16-12 by the end of the quarter.  McCook Central/Montrose tied the game at 20-20 towards the end of the second quarter, but Dell Rapids closed out the half on a 5-2 run to take a 25-2 lead into halftime.  The Cougars cut the Quarrier lead to one at the end of the third quarter at 37-36.

McCook Central/Montrose then took the lead in the fourth quarter.  The Cougars lead 54-50 with under a minute to play in the game.  Lindsey Morris hit a three-point shot to pull within a point at 54-53.  With :06 remaining the game, the Cougars missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Quarriers a chance at the end of the game.  Kaylee Hennen drove the lane and was fouled on a last-second shot.  Hennen made one-of-two free throws with :00.8 left to tie the game at 54-54 and send the game into overtime.

However, during the overtime period, McCook Central/Montrose took an early lead and made enough free throws down the stretch to come away with the win over the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids was led by Mikaela Stofferahn with 15 points.  Emma Paul finished with 14 points, while Averi Pankonen added 11 points for the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids (1-1) will host Tea Area on Friday, December 18th, as part of a double-header.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Fall to Bridgewater – Emery

DRSM LogoThe Bridgewater-Emery Huskies picked up a 72-27 win in their first game of the season against the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Monday, December 14th, in boys basketball action at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  It was the first loss for the Cardinals for the season.

The Huskies led the game from start to finish.  Bridgewater-Emery led 19-9 after the first quarter, 44-14 at halftime, and 63-22 at the end of the third quarter.

St Mary shot just 22.o% (11-50) from the field in the game, 13.3% (2-15) from three-point area, and 75.0% (3-4) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had a total of 31 team rebounds, 11 assists, but turned the ball over 27 times.

Noah Fiegen led St Mary on the night with 14 points and seven rebounds.  Zach Geraets added four points.  Garret Frost, Luke Brown, and Connor Libis each had three points apiece.  Brown led the team in assists with three.

The Cardinals (1-1) will host Centerville on Tuesday, December 15th, as part of a girls-boys double-header.  The games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Open Season with Win

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team opened their season with a 59-49 win over Estelline on Friday, December 11th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Estelline held a two-point lead after the end of the first quarter at 10-8.  The Cardinals were able to take the leading heading into halftime by a point at 23-22.  St Mary pushed their lead to five points by the end of the third quarter at 39-34.  The Cardinals then outscore Estelline 20-15 in the final quarter for the win.

Connor Libis led St Mary on the night with 20 points.  Garret Frost added 11 points for the Cardinals.  Estelline was led by Trevor Gorder with 21 points.

The Cardinals (1-0) will host Bridgewater/Emery on Monday, December 14th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Hoglund Reaches Milestone in Quarrier Win

DRHSvsWC_BBB_12-11-15Ty Hoglund reached the 1,000 point milestone for his career on Friday, December 11th.  Hogland was only four points away from 1,000 entering the game against the West Central Trojans.  Hoglund hit a three-point shot three seconds into the game to give him 999 points.  With the score tied 8-8, Hoglund drove the length of the court after a rebound and made the left-handed layup with 4:33 to go in the quarter to give Dell Rapids a 10-8 lead…a lead they would hold on to the rest of the game…and give him 1,001 points for his career.

Hoglund finished the game with 36 points, three steals and five assists for Dell Rapids.  Sheldon Siemonsma had 14 points, while Mason Schmidt had 12 points.  Siemonsma also had nine rebounds.  Sam White and Jeffrey Schuch both had eight rebounds a piece.  Carson Rentz dished out four assists in the game.

Dell Rapids led 22-13 after the first quarter as the Quarriers out-scored West Central 12-5 after Hoglund’s milestone layup.  The Quarriers continued the offensive momentum into the second quarter outscoring the Trojans 21-13 to give Dell Rapids a 43-26 halftime lead.

The Quarriers scored the first seven points of the third quarter to give them their biggest lead of the night at 50-26 with 6:30 to go in the quarter.  West Central, however, went on a run the remainder of the quarter to close the gap to 66-54 by the end of the quarter.

Noah Vettrus hit a three-point basket, three of his 33 points in the game, with 6:00 to go in the game to pull the Trojans within seven points at 70-61.  That was as close as West Central would get as Dell Rapids was able to hit enough free throws down the stretch to maintain about a 10-point lead and pull out the win 82-70.

Dell Rapids (1-0) will host Tea Area in their next game on Friday, December 18th, as part of a double-header.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Fall to Estelline

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team dropped a close game to Estelline 38-33 on Thursday, December 10th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Lexi Klein led the Cardinals with 10 points in the game.  Kennedi Mullaney finished with six.  Estelline had three players score double figures.  LeAnnah Tekrony, Kaitlyn Steffensen, and Jamie Begalka each had 10 points a piece.

St Mary (0-2) will host Centerville on Tuesday, December 15th, as part of a double-header.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Cruise to Season-Opening Win

NewDRLogoAfter a slow start, the Dell Rapids Quarriers cruised to a 62-35 win over the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers in girls basketball action on Tuesday, December 8th, at Sioux Falls Christian High School.

The Chargers held a 16-11 lead after the first quarter, but the Quarrier defense held Sioux Falls Christian to just 19 points in the remaining three quarters of the game.  Dell Rapids outscored the Chargers 15-2 in the second quarter to take a 26-18 lead at halftime.  The Quarriers pushed their lead to 45-27 after the third quarter.

Mikaela Stofferahn led the Quarriers with 23 points and six rebounds.  Averi Pankonen had 11 points, and Emma Paul finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

Dell Rapids (1-0) will host McCook Central/Montrose on Monday, December 14th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

JV Results:

The Quarrier JV team earned a 52-11 win over Sioux Falls Christian.  Aspen Hansen had 14 points and nine rebounds.  Kaylee Hennen and Kali Graham both had nine points, and Tiffanie Dorale had three assists.

C Team Results:

The Quarrier C Team also picked up a win against the Chargers.  Dell Rapids won 25-13.  Jayda Knuppe had 11 points, while Jenae Schoeberl finished with six points.

Garretson Defeats Cardinal Girls in Season-Opener

DRSM LogoThe Garretson Blue Dragons earned a 52-41 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in the season-opening game of the girls season on Tuesday, December 8th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively in the first quarter, scoring a combined 15 points.  Garretson held a 10-5 lead after the first quarter.  The offense picked up in the second quarter, and the Blue Dragons headed to the locker room at halftime ahead 25-13.  The Blue Dragons were able to push their lead to 13 points by the end of the third quarter at 39-26.  The Cardinals were able to close the gap early in the fourth quarter, but Garretson was able to hang on for the 52-41 win.

St Mary finished the game shooting 25.5% (14-55) from the field, 33.3% (4-12) from three-point area, and 64.3% (9-14) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had a total of 41 rebounds, 12 assists and 12 turnovers.

Kennedi Mullaney led the Cardinals with 16 points and nine rebounds.  Jackie Wolles had 11 points and two rebounds, while Lexi Klein finished with eight points and seven rebounds.  Sydney Cook led the team with four assists.

The Cardinals (0-1) will host Estelline on Thursday, December 10th.

Quarrier Wrestling Hosts Top of the Rock Tournament

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team hosted the “Top of the Rock” tournament on Saturday, December 5th, at Dell Rapids High School.  Dell Rapids finished sixth with a team score of 72.5.  Adrian placed first with a score of 229.5.  Beresford was second with 198.0 points, and McCook Central/Montrose was third with 150.0 points.
