Gorospe Places 8th for Quarrier Wrestling at State A Tournament

QuarriersThree Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestlers are in Rapid City for the State A Wrestling Tournament Friday, February 26th, and Saturday February 27th.

James Lueders (145 lb) lost his opening match on Friday in an 11-1 major decision to Trent Francom of Huron.  Lueders earned a pin over PJ Parmelee of Tea Area, but lost his next match in a 4-1 decision to Collin Haar of Aberdeen Central.

Lathon Gorospe (220 lb) placed 8th at this year’s tournament.  He was pinned in his opening match of the tournament on Friday by Tristin Beckstead of Aberdeen Central.  Gorospe then pinned Marc Williams of Spearfish, and then defeated Donavan Spencer of Rapid City Central in a 4-0 decision.  Gorospe started his day on Saturday in a match against Joel Carpenter of Sturgis Brown.  Carpenter earned a 9-0 major decision.  In the 7th/8th place match, Gorospe fell to Adam Voss of Douglas in a 4-0 decision.

Nick Schmidt (285 lb) was pinned by Nick Ryan Parker of Dakota Valley in his opening match on Friday.  Schmidt was then pinned by Jon Dreamer of Pine Ridge.

Quarrier Girls Celebrate Win and Milestone

DRHSvsSFC_GBB_2-25-16_1 Just 1:02 into the game, Mikaela Stofferahn was fouled and sent to the free-throw line with two shots.  She made the first one, which gave her 1,000 points for her career at Dell Rapids.  Stofferahn went on to make both free throws, and the Quarriers used that excitement to build a big lead they would not lose against the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers.  The Quarriers went on to defeat the Chargers 53-36 in the semifinal round of the Region 3A tournament in Tea on Thursday, February 25th. Sioux Falls Christian tied the game at 2-2 with 6:00 to go in the first quarter, but Dell Rapids went on a 10-0 run the remainder of the first quarter to take a 12-2 lead.  The Chargers could not solve the Quarrier defense in the second quarter either only scoring four more points.  Dell Rapids led 26-6 at halftime.  The Chargers were able to get the offense going in the second half, however, they could not stop the Quarriers.  Dell Rapids added to their lead in the third quarter pushing it to 43-21.

Three players scored in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Emma Paul led the way with 17 points.  Arial Hoffman and Kaylee Hennen both had 11 points a piece.  Stofferahn finished with seven points in the game.  Paige DeJong led Sioux Falls Christian with 15 points.

Dell Rapids (13-8) will play in the Region 3A championship game against Flandreau on Thursday, March 3rd, at 7:00 p.m. at Garretson.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Season Ends in Elkton

DRSM LogoThe Elkton-Lake Benton Elks pulled away from the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in the fourth quarter for a 55-40 win in the District 7B semifinals on Thursday, February 25th, in Elkton.  The Elks led by just one point at the end of the first quarter at 12-11.  They pushed that lead to 27-22 at halftime.  The Cardinals cut the lead down to just four at 38-34 at the end of the third quarter, but Elkton-Lake Benton outscored St Mary 17-6 in the final quarter to advance in the tournament.

Jackie Wolles had 16 points, while Sydney Cook finished with 14 points for St Mary.  Elkton-Lake Benton was led by Morgan Carmody with 18 points and Callie Otkin with 14 points.

The Cardinals finish their season with a season record of 6-15.

Quarrier Boys End Season with Win over Deubrook

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers ended the regular season with a strong team performance in a 91-52 win over the Deubrook Area Dolphins on Monday, February 22nd, at White.  Five Quarrier players finished in double-figures on the night.

Ty Hoglund led the team with 20 points.  Sheldon Siemonsma had 16 points, Mason Schmidt had 15, Mason Peter scored 11, and Jeffrey Schuch ended with 10 points in the game.  Dell Rapids shot 47% from the field, 43% from three-point area, and 71% from the free-throw line.  They forced 23 Dolphin turnovers that led to 33 points.

Dell Rapids led 22-10 at the end of the first quarter.  The lead extended to 40-18 by halftime.  Both offenses found rhythm in the third quarter as both teams scored over 20 points each.  The Quarriers added to their lead by the end of the quarter at 65-40.  Dell Rapids out scored Deubrook Area 26-12 in the final quarter.

The Quarriers finished the regular season with an 18-2 record.  Region 3A Tournament play begins Tuesday, March 1st.

Cardinal Boys Drop Final Home Game to Chester

DRSM LogoThe Chester Flyers defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals 75-35 on Monday, February 22nd, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  It was the final home game of the year for the Cardinals as they celebrated Senior Night for Noah Fiegen.

The Flyers got out to a 12 point lead by the end of the first quarter at 23-11.  They pushed the lead to 42-24 by halftime.  Chester’s defense locked down on the Cardinals in the second half only allowing a total of 11 second half points.  The Flyers led 57-27 at the end of the third quarter and out scored St Mary 18-8 in the final quarter.

St Mary finished the night at 24% (11-45) from the field, 26% (5-19) from three-point area, and 73% (8-11) from the free-throw line.  They had a total of 37 team rebounds, but turned the ball over 24 times.  Chester finished the night shooting 43% from the field.

Luke Brown had 10 points for St Mary along with five rebounds.  Connor Libis had eight points.  Feigen ended the night with six points, 11 rebounds, and an assist.

The Cardinals finish the regular season with a 1-19 record.  St Mary will play in the opening round of the District 7B Tournament on Monday, February 29th, against Oldham-Ramona/Rutland at 7:00 p.m.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Wrestling Will Send Three to State

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team placed three wrestlers at the Region 1A meet in Madison on Saturday, February 20th.  Dell Rapids finished with 35.0 team points.  Sioux Falls Roosevelt placed first as a team with 217.0 points.  Brookings was second with 135.0 points, and Watertown was third with 135.0 points.

James Lueders (145), Lathon Gorospe (220), and Nick Schmidt (285) all placed in the top four at the region meet and qualified for the 2016 South Dakota State A Wrestling Tournament held Friday and Saturday, February 26th and 27th, at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City.

Lennox Ends Quarrier Boys Winning Streak

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers’ 14-game winning streak was snapped on Friday, February 19th, by the Lennox Orioles.  Lennox defeated the Quarriers 52-45 at Dell Rapids High School in the final regular-season home game for Dell Rapids.

The game was a close battle all game long as neither team was able to secure a large lead.  Dell Rapids led by just one point at the end of first quarter at 10-9.  The Quarriers were able to push their lead to four points by halftime at 26-22.  The Orioles cut into the Dell Rapids lead and trailed the Quarriers 39-37 at the end of the third quarter.  The Lennox defense held Dell Rapids to just six points in the final quarter, and the Orioles were able to pull away late in the game on free throws for the win.

Dell Rapids was led by Ty Hoglund with 15 points.  Carson Rentz added nine points.  Jacob Hinker had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Lennox.

The Quarriers (17-2) travel to White to face the Deubrook Area Dolphins their final regular season game of the year.

Baltic Pulls Away from Cardinal Boys Late

DRSM LogoThe Baltic Bulldogs used a 15-2 fourth quarter to pull away from the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals for a 54-28 win on Friday, February 19th, in Baltic.  Baltic led by six points 13-7 at the end of the first quarter.  The lead grew to eight points at 23-15 by halftime.  The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 39-26 by the end of the third quarter before pulling away in the fourth.

St Mary shot just 22% (10-46) from the field, 22% (4-18) from the three-point area, and 44% (4-9) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 26 team rebounds, but turned the ball over 17 times.

Luke Brown had 11 points and three rebounds.  Garret Frost added seven points.  Noah Fiegen had six points, eight rebounds, and three steals.

St Mary (1-18) will wrap up their regular season at home on Monday, February 22nd, against Chester.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Win 2nd in a Row

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls ended their regular season with their second win in a row.  The Cardinals defeated the Marion Bears 59-36 on Friday, February 19th, in Marion.

St Mary held Marion to 13 total first half points.  The Cardinals led from the beginning of the game.  St Mary led 18-6 after the first quarter and 30-13 at halftime.  Marion was able to out score the Cardinals in the third quarter, but only by a point.  St Mary still led 44-28 at the end of the third quarter.  The Cardinals out scored the Bears 15-8 in the final quarter.

The Cardinals shot 37% (23-62) from the field, 46% (5-11) from three-point area, and 73% (8-11) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had 46 team rebounds, 16 assists, and nine steals.

Jackie Wolles had a game-high 14 points.  Sydney Cook added 12 points and five rebounds.  Abby Burkhart had eight points and six rebounds.  Lexi Klein also had eight points and five rebounds.  Kennedi Mullaney had six points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.  Clare Klein had six points, and Ella Heinitz added five points.

St Mary finished with a 6-14 regular-season record.  The girls District 7B tournament begins on Tuesday, February 23rd.  The Cardinals will play on Thursday, February 25th, at Elkton against the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks.

Madison Rally Stuns Quarrier Girls

DRHSvsMadison_GBB_2-18-16The Madison Bulldogs rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to defeat the Dell Rapids Quarriers 49-46 on Thursday, February 18th, in Madison.  Dell Rapids was only able to score just 14 points in the second half.

The Quarriers led 18-6 at the end of the first quarter.  They pushed their lead to 18 points at 26-8 with 4:35 to go in the second quarter.  Madison was able to  close the gap to 14 at 32-18 by halftime.

The Bulldogs made their run in the second half.  They outscored Dell Rapids 15-5 in the third quarter to trail 37-33.  Madison pulled the game within two points at 37-35 after two free-throws by Jessi Giles.  Dell Rapids then went on a 5-0 run after a three-point play by Mikaela Stofferahn to extend their lead to 42-35 with 6:10 remaining in the game.  Madison again fought back within a point at 44-43 with 1:35, but Kaylee Hennen hit a driving shot from the middle of the lane with 1:18 to go.  The Bulldogs closed out the game on a 6-0 run for the win.

Dell Rapids shot 36% (18-50) from the field, 11% (2-18) from three-point area, and 67% (8-12) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers out rebounded Madison 42-38, but turned the ball over 19 times.

Emma Paul finished with 10 points.  Stofferahn had eight points and 16 rebounds.  Arial Hoffman also added eight points, and Kali Graham added six points.  Nicole Brown led Madison with 18 points, while Giles had 16 points.

Dell Rapids finishes the regular season with a record 12-8.  The girls Region 3A tournament starts on Tuesday, February 23rd.
