Quarrier Girls End Season with Win, Place 7th

DRHSvsMcL_GBB_3-12-16_4The Dell Rapids Quarriers ended their season with a win and placed 7th at the 2016 Girls State A Tournament in Watertown on Saturday, March 12th.  The Quarriers defeated McLaughlin 71-62.  The game was back-and-forth throughout its entirety.

Dell Rapids had an early 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Both teams scored over 20 points in DRHSvsMcL_GBB_3-12-16_1the second quarter, and it was McLaughlin that held a one-point lead of 34-33 at halftime.  Dell Rapids regained the lead late in the third quarter and led 50-48 by quarter’s end.  The Quarriers pushed their lead to 60-50 midway through the quarter, but McLaughlin tied the game at 62-62 after a 12-2 run late in the quarter.  The Quarriers answered with a 9-0 run to close out the game for the win.

Four players scored in double-figures for Dell Rapids.  Mikaela Stofferahn finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, and two assists.  Arial Hoffman had 14 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.  Lindsey Morris scored 13 points and had four assists.  Emma Paul added 10 points along with six rebounds.  Kali Graham finished with eight points, and Kaylee Hennen had five points.  Sami Reider dished out three assists in the game. Dell Rapids finishes the 2015-2016 season with a 15-10 record and a 7th place finish.

EPJ Edges Quarrier Girls at State A

NewDRLogoThe Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies took the lead in the third quarter and hung on to beat the Dell Rapids Quarriers 44-39 in the consolation round of the 2016 Girls State A Tournament in Watertown on Friday, March 11th.

The Huskies had a one-point advantage over the Quarriers at the end of the first quarter 11-10, but Dell Rapids outscored Elk Point-Jefferson 13-8 in the second quarter to take a 23-19 lead at halftime.  Elk Point-Jefferson’s defense held Dell Rapids to just two third quarter points, and the Huskies led 33-25 at the end of the third quarter.  Dell Rapids outscored Elk Point-Jefferson 14-11 in the final quarter, but couldn’t quite complete the comeback.

Mikaela Stofferahn finished the game with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.  Emma Paul added nine points to go along with five rebounds and three assists.  Arial Hoffman had seven points.  Lindsey Morris added four points and had seven rebounds.

Dell Rapids (14-10) will play McLaughlin for 7th/8th place at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 12th.

Quarrier Girls Fall in Opening Round Game

The Dell Rapids Quarriers lost to the St Thomas More Cavaliers in the opening round of the girls 2016 State A Tournament 55-24 on Thursday, March 10th, in Watertown.

St Thomas More led 12-6 at the end of the first quarter.  Dell Rapids had closed to within five points at 20-15 near the end of the second quarter, but the Cavaliers went on a 6-0 run to end the half and led 26-15 at halftime.  St Thomas More’s defensive pressure was difficult for the Dell Rapids offense to handle, as the Quarriers were held to just nine second half points.

Emma Paul had six points, two rebounds, and two assists.  Mikaela Stofferahn finished with six points, two rebounds, one assist, and three steals.  Kali Graham added four points, and Averi Pankonen and Tiffanie Dorale each had three points.

Dell Rapids will play Elk Point-Jefferson at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11th.

Quarrier Boys Season Ends in Region 3A Final

DRHSvsSFC_BBB_3-8-16The Sioux Falls Christian Chargers erased a 14-point halftime deficit and stunned the Dell Rapids Quarriers 60-59 in the Region 3A Championship game on Tuesday, March 8th at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls.

Before a capacity crowd, the Quarriers jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game and led 22-11 at the end of the first quarter.  Dell Rapids was able to extend the lead even more by halftime as they outscored the Chargers 19-16 to take a 41-27 lead to the break.  The Chargers poured on the defensive pressure in the second half, and came roaring back in the third quarter.  Sioux Falls Christian outscored Dell Rapids 20-9 in the third quarter and cut the lead down to three at 50-47.  Both teams went back and fourth in the fourth quarter.  The Chargers took the lead for the first time in the game with 20.6 seconds to go after two made free throws by Keegan Van Egdom.  Ty Hoglund was fouled with 14.2 seconds to go and made both free throws to give Dell Rapids the lead back at 59-58.  But with just 3.6 left in the game, Chad Barkema was fouled, and he made both free throws as the lead went back to the Chargers.  The last second shot from half court was no good for Dell Rapids.

Hoglund led Dell Rapids with 29 points and four assists.  Jeffrey Schuch had nine points and three blocked shots.  Mason Peter added seven points, and Sam White led the Quarriers with six rebounds in the game.

The Dell Rapids season coame to an end with a 20-3 record.  Sioux Falls Christian advanced to the State A Tournament in Rapid City March 17-19.

Two Quarriers Earn Dak-12 Girls All-Conference Honors

NewDRLogoMikaela Stofferahn and Emma Paul earned 2016 Dak-12 All-Conference honors for the 2015-2016 season.

Stofferahn was a First Team All-Conference selection.  Stofferahn finished second in scoring in conference games and first in rebounding.  She averaged 19.44 points per conference game, 9.82 rebounds, 1.00 steals, and 1.09 assists.

Paul was a Third Team All-Conference Selection.  Paul averaged 8.91 points per conference game, 6.45 rebounds, 1.36 steals, and 2.36 assists.

Dell Rapids was 7-4 in regular season conference games finishing third.  The Quarriers will continue their season at the 2016 South Dakota State A Tournament in Watertown on March 10-12.

Quarrier Powerlifters Take 2nd at State

QuarriersDell Rapids placed second at the South Dakota High School State Powerlifting meet on Saturday, March 5th, in Madison.  Dell Rapids had six participate in the event, while Dell Rapids St Mary had three.  Dell Rapids finished with a score of 13 to finish second in Class A.  Baltic finished first with a score of 32.  Madison was third with a score of nine.

Seth Spielmann (DR) placed 5th in the 148 weight class with a squat of 315, bench of 215, and a dead lift of 405.

Dalton Houska (DRSM) had a squat of 295, bench of 215, and a dead lift of 335 in the 165 weight class.

Carson Park (DRSM) had a squat of 375, bench of 225, and dead lift of 395.  Tate Hansen (DRSM) had a squat of 340, bench of 200, and dead lift of 355.  Josh Heinemann (DR) had a squat of 250, bench of 150, and dead lift of 365.  All three were in the 181 weight class.

Jess Michel (DR) had a squat of 330, bench of 195, and dead lift of 445.  Tyson Dahler (DR) had a squat of 295, bench of 185, and a bench of 375.  Both were in the 198 weight class.

Cole VanDuyn (DR) placed second in the 220 weight class with asquat of 385, bench of 300, and a dead lift of 485.

Nick Palmer (DR) placed second in the 242 weight class with a 435 squat, 265 bench, and a 495 dead lift.

Quarrier Boys Pull off Epic Finish

DRHSvsMadison_BBB_3-4-16In what can only be described as an epic finish, the Dell Rapids Quarriers went on a 10-0 run in the final 1:12 of the game to pull off an incredible come-from-behind win over the Madison Bulldogs 56-53 in Region 3A semifinal action from the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls.

Mitch Hansen made two free-throws for Madison with 1:19 left in the game to give Madison a 53-46 lead.  The comeback started with a three-point shot from the corner by Mason Schmidt with 1:08 to go.  Just seven seconds later, Ty Hoglund made a layup after a steal of the inbound pass, and Dell Rapids trailed 53-51 with 1:01 to go.  Mason Peter stole the next inbound pass, and found Sam White for the game-tying layup with :53 on the clock.  Mason Leighton ran the clock down to :25 for Madison before making his drive to the basket.  His layup attempt was blocked by White, and the Quarriers had the ball with :16 left in the game.  Hoglund walked the ball across half court and drained a near 30-foot three-point shot with :03 on the clock.  Tanner Burg to the inbound pass after a timeout and got off a shot at the top of the key for Madison, but it fell away no good, and Dell Rapids pulled out the comeback win.

“I’ve watched a lot of basketball over the years, I don’t know if I’ve seen a minute and a half like that.  We’ve got a group of kids that never quit…never quit believing.  We said in that two minute timeout we have to find a way, and everybody believe that.  And we found a way.  It took everything we had, but we found a way,” said Dell Rapids head coach Jason Fersdahl.

The Quarriers had a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter at 13-11.   Dell Rapids was able to push the lead to 18-14 with 4:00 to go in the second quarter, but Madison outscored the Quarriers 11-4 in the final 4:00 to take a 25-22 lead into halftime.  The Bulldogs maintained a five-to-seven point lead throughout much of the second half.  Madison even held a 47-38 lead with 3:25 to go in the fourth quarter.

Dell Rapids finished the night shooting 33% (18-55) from the field and 83% (16-19) from the free-throw line.  Madison shot 40% (16-40) from the field and 65% (13-20) from the free-throw line.  Madison out rebounded the Quarriers 32-30 in the game.

Hoglund finished with 30 points and four assists for Dell Rapids.  Jeffrey Schuch grabbed 14 rebounds.  Madison was led by Taner DenHoed with 14 points.

“We have to get ready to go again.  We found a way to continue our season tonight, and we want to go out and play hard Tuesday night and continue our season after that one as well,” said Fersdahl.

The Quarriers will play Sioux Falls Christian for the Region 3A Championship on Tuesday, March 8th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Elmen Center.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Heading Back to State A Tournament

DRHS_Girls_Region3A_2016_2The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls are headed back to the State A Tournament after a Region 3A Championship win over the Flandreau Fliers 50-42 at Garretson High School on Thursday, March 3rd.

Both teams were on fire offensively in the first quarter combining for 40 points.  The two teams traded leads in the first quarter, but it was Dell Rapids having a 21-19 advantage at the end of the quarter.  The second quarter was more of a defensive battle as the two teams combined for only nine points total.  The Quarriers held a 28-21 lead at halftime.

The Quarriers pushed their lead to 10 points a couple of times in the third quarter, but Flandreau was able to cut the lead back to seven by the end of the quarter at 36-29.  The Fliers opened up the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run to pull within in two points, but that was as close as the Fliers could get as Dell Rapids pulled away for the win.

Mikaela Stofferahn led a balanced Quarrier offensive attack with 14 point, scoring 10 of those in the second half.  Emma Paul finished with 10 points in the game.  Arial Hoffman finished with nine points, and Lidnsey Morris and Averi Pankonen each had five points.

Senior guard Sami Reider said, “I think we really came together as a team tonight as opposed to the whole season.  We really put four quarters together tonight.  We haven’t been able to do that yet.  I’m really proud to say that I’m a Quarrier first of all, and I’m really proud to say that I’m a part of this team.  We’ve been about the same team the past three years, and I’m really excited to go experience that again with these same girls.”

The 2016 South Dakota Girls State A Tournament will be held in Watertown on March 10th-12th.

Quarrier Boys Advance to Region 3A Semifinals

DRHSvsBaltic_BBB_3-1-16The Dell Rapids Quarriers advanced to the Region 3A semifinals with an opening round win over the Baltic Bulldogs 73-42 on Tuesday, March 1st, at Dell Rapids High School.

Baltic scored the first bucket of the ball game, but the Quarriers went on a 19-2 run the remainder of the first quarter to take a 19-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Dell Rapids kept up the defensive pressure in the second quarter, out scoring the Bulldogs 18-10 to extend the lead to 37-14 at halftime.

The defense was strong again in the third quarter for Dell Rapids.  They held Baltic to just 10 third quarter points while extending the lead to 61-24 by the end of the quarter.  Baltic was able to get a little offensive rhythm going in the fourth quarter, scoring 18 points.

Three players scored in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Ty Hoglund led the way with 21 points, six rebounds, and five assists.  Sheldon Siemonsma had 15 points along with four assists and three steals.  Mason Schmidt finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Mason Peter also had a good night on the boards pulling down seven rebounds.

Dell Rapids (20-2) will play Madison in the semifinals on Friday, March 4th, at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls.  Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m., and the game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Season Ends in Tough Battle at O-R-R

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal basketball season came to an end in the District 7B tournament on Monday, February 29th.  The Cardinals lost a close battle in Rutland to the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders 59-52.

St Mary led by three points with 5:27 to go in the opening quarter, but the Raiders rallied to take a 9-8 lead by the end of the first quarter.  O-R-R was able to extend the lead to five points by halftime at 27-22.  The Raiders pushed their lead to 10 points by the end of the third quarter at 46-36.  The Cardinals were able to out score O-R-R in the final quarter 16-13, but wasn’t enough to get the win.

The Cardinals shot 33% (18-54) from the field, 50% (10-20) from three-point area, and 43% (6-14) from the free-throw line.  St Mary had 36 team rebounds, 14 team assists, but turned the ball over 15 times.

Two players scored in double-figures for the Cardinals.  Austin Welbig had 15 points.  Luke Brown added 12 points along with two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  Connor Libis had eight points, three rebounds, and seven assists.  Noah Fiegen ended the night with seven points and seven rebounds.

St Mary’s season ends with a record of 1-20.
