Third Quarter Lifts Divers over Cardinal Boys

DRSM LogoThe Lake Preston Divers out scored the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals 18-9 in the third quarter on their way to a 68-60 win on Friday, January 13th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

The Cardinals held a seven point lead at the end of the first quarter at 21-14.  The Divers cut into the deficit in the second quarter and pulled within two points at 33-31 by halftime.  After the third quarter run by the Drivers, Lake Preston led 49-42 heading into the final quarter.  The two teams combined for 37 total points in the final quarter with the Divers hanging on for the win.

St Mary finished the game shooting 23-61 (38%) from the field, 9-23 (39%) from three-point area, and 5-10 (50%) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had a total of 29 rebounds and 13 assists.

St Mary had two players finish in double figures.  Connor Libis had 23 points, and Luke Brown finished with 11 points.  Zach Geraets added eight points, and Garret Frost ended with seven points in the game.  Brown led the team in rebounds with seven.  Geraets pulled down four rebounds.  Libis also had six assists.  Austin Welbig and Frost both had three assists.

The Cardinals (5-5) will be the #5 seed in the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament.  Their first game will be against #4 Oldham-Ramona/Rutland at 6:00 p.m. in Colman.  Their second game will be Friday, January 20th, in Colman, and the tournament finishes in Colman on Saturday, January 21st.

Cardinal Girls Beat Divers

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals overcame a five-point halftime deficit and beat the Lake Preston Divers 48-44 on Friday, January 13th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  In their second game in as many nights, the Cardinals trailed 25-20 at halftime.  However, in the third quarter, the Cardinals out scored the Divers 15-3 to take a 35-28 lead at the end of the quarter.  The Divers would out score St Mary 16-13, but wasn’t enough as the Cardinals hung on for their fourth win of the season.

Jackie Wolles finished the game with a team-high 13 points.  Ella Heinitz added 11 pionts.  Lexi Klein had 10 points, and Sydney Cook finished with eight points in a balanced scoring attack for the Cardinals.

St Mary (4-7) will be the #5 seed in the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament.  Their opening round game will be held on Monday, January 16th, against #4 seed Oldham-Ramona/Rutland at 6:00 p.m. in Estelline.  The second game will be Thursday, January 19th, in Estelline, and the final game of the tournament will be held on Saturday, January 21st, in Colman.

Canistota Pulls Away Late Against Cardinal Girls

DRSMvsCanistota_GBB_1-12-17The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals scored the first sisx points of the fourth quarter and held a 34-33 lead with 4:08 to go in the game, but the Canistota Hawks closed out the game on an 11-3 run to win 44-37 on Thursday, January 12th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

The Hawks led by as many as seven points in the first quarter, but the Cardinals were able to close the gap to 11-7 by the first quarter break.  St Mary rallied to tie the game at 19-19 at halftime.  St Mary led 26-25 with 4:15 to play in the third quarter before Canistota ended the third quarter on an 8-2 run to lead 33-28 heading into the final quarter.  St Mary regained the lead at 34-33 with 4:30 to play after Maddie Schwebach made a layup before Canistota made their run for the win.

Sydney Cook finished the game with nine points.  Ella Heinitz and Kennedi Mullaney both added six points.  Lexi Klein pulled down quite a few rebounds in the game for St Mary as well.

St Mary (3-7) will host Lake Preston as part of a girls and boys double-header on Friday, January 13th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Boys Fall to Hot Shooting Chargers

NewDRLogoThe Sioux Falls Christian Charger caught fire offensively in the second half scoring 49 points.  The second half surge gave the Chargers an 85-61 win over the Dell Rapids Quarriers on Tuesday, January 10th, at Sioux Falls Christian High School.

The game was back and forth throughout the first half with both teams trading leads.  Sioux Falls Christian held a slim 19-18 lead after the first quarter.  Dell Rapids was able to gain the advantage by halftime at 37-36.  The Chargers were able to re-gain the lead in the third quarter and led 53-47 at the end of the quarter.  Then the Charger offense really caught fire scoring 32 points while hitting six three-point shots in the final quarter for the win.

Dell Rapids finished shooting 22-48 (46%) from the field, 6-21 (29%) from three-point area, and 11-16 (69%) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had a total of 28 team rebounds, 17 assists, seven steals, and turned the ball over 11 times.

Four players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Jeffrey Schuch led the team with 14 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.  Tanner Heim had 11 points and three rebounds.  Mason Schmidt and Sheldon Siemonsma both finished with 10 points each.  Schmidt pulled down four rebounds along with three steals, and Siemonsma dished out four assists.  Austin Ellingson had six points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Dell Rapids (5-2) travels to Garretson on Monday, January 16th.

Quarrier Girls Rebound in Tea

NewDRLogoAfter a tough overtime loss last night, the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls rebounded with a 53-42 win over the Tea Area Titans on Tuesday, January 10th, in Tea.  This was the sixth of seven straight road games for the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids was able to get a 12-point lead built in the first half as the Quarriers held a 34-22 lead at halftime.  However, the Titans cut the lead in half by the end of the third quarter by holding Dell Rapids to only five third quarter points.  Dell Rapids led 39-33 heading into the final quarter.  Tea Area was able to cut the lead to five points, but Dell Rapids pushed it back to nine with 4:22 to go in the game.  The Quarriers were able to maintain that lead throughout the remainder of the quarter for the win.

Three players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids in the game.  Kali Graham led the way with 16 points.  Emma Paul finished with 13 points, and Jayda Knuppe added 11 points.

The Quarriers (5-4) will play Flandreau at the Hanson Classic in Mitchell on Saturday, January 14th.  Tip-off is scheduled for about 11:30 a.m.

Winning Streak Halted for Cardinal Boys

DRSM LogoThe winning streak ended at four games for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team.  The Parker Pheasants defeated the Cardinals 66-27 on Tuesday, January 10th, in Parker to end the streak.

The Pheasants shut down the Cardinal offense in the first quarter allowing just three points.  Parker lead 28-3 after the first quarter.  The St Mary offense got going in the second quarter, and the Cardinals even outscored Parker 16-14, but the Pheasants still lead 42-19 at halftime.  The Cardinals then had a rough offensive second half only scoring a total of eight points.

St Mary finished 11-52 (21%) from the field, 4-22 (18%) from three point area, and 1-4 (25%) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals also had 18 total team rebounds, five assists, nine steals and 12 turnovers.  Parker finished the game shooting 51% from the field and had 38 total team rebounds.

Connor Libis finished with 13 points for the Cardinals.  Austin Welbig had six points.  Luke Brown had three points and five rebounds.  Garret Frost also had three points for St Mary.

The Cardinals (5-4) will host Lake Preston on Friday, January 13th, as part of a double-header with the girls.  The games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Wrestling Team Drops Two at Home

NewQuarrierLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team hosted a Dak-12 meet on Tuesday, January 10th.  It was the final home wrestling match of the season and parent’s night.  The Quarriers hosted the Madison Bulldogs and the Vermillion Tanagers.

Dell Rapids lost to Vermillion 54-30.  Vermillon also defeated Madison 47-24.  Madison beat the Quarriers in the team dual 63-15.

The Quarriers will be at the Tri-Valley Tournament on Saturday, January 14th.

Quarrier Girls Fall in OT to Lennox

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls nearly handed the Lennox Orioles their first loss of the season on Monday, January 9th, in Lennox.

With the game tied at 56-56 in the final seconds of regulation, Dell Rapids at the ball with a chance to win the game at the buzzer.  However, the final shot didn’t fall through the net, and the game went to overtime.  The Quarriers held a two point lead at 60-58 with under a minute to play in overtime, and Lennox was able to make a layup and draw a foul for a chance a three-point play.  The free throw was good to give Lennox a 61-60 lead with :26 to go.  The next shot for Dell Rapids was no good, and Lennox got the rebound.  The Orioles made both free throws of a one-and-one to push the lead to 63-60 with :06 left in the game.  The Quarriers pushed the ball up the court, but Emma Paul’s attempt to tie the game hit the front of the rim and fell away no good.

Lennox held a 16-10 led after the first quarter.  Dell Rapids cut the lead to just one point at halftime.  Lennox led 37-36.  Both teams scored 14 points in the third quarter, and Lennox maintained the one-point lead at 51-50.  The Quarriers were able to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.

Jayda Knuppe had a game-high 32 points for Dell Rapids.  Both Paul and Knuppe had six rebounds.  Three players finished in double-figures for Lennox.  Rianna Fillipi had 21 points, Riley Peters 19 points, and Jordan Kruse had 10 points.

Dell Rapid (4-4) will travel to Tea to play the Tea Area Titans on Tuesday, January 10th.

Quarrier Wrestling Results – 1/7/17

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier  varsity wrestling team participated in the Dan Pansch/Jesse James Invitational on Saturday, January 7th.  The event was held in Brandon and hosted by Garretson.

Dell Rapids finished with a team score of 64.5 points, which placed them 13th as a team.  Canton finished first with 212.0 points.  Harrisburg was second with 172.5 points, and Vermillion was third with 150.5 points.  There were 19 teams that participated in the tournament.

The Quarriers had six wrestlers that placed in the top eight of their respective weight-class brackets.  Zach McKee finished 6th, James Lueders finished 4th, Mitchell Klinkenborg finished 8th, Ben Cavigielli finished 8th, Nick Schmidt finished 5th, and Nick Palmer finished 4th.

Dell Rapids will host a Dak-12 meet on Tuesday, January 10th.  Big Sioux Media will have live webcast of the event.

Quarrier Boys Get Two Wins

drhsvschamberlain_1-6-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers earned two wins during the week.  Dell Rapids defeated the Beresford Watchdogs 49-34 on Thursday, January 5th, in Beresford.  Then the Quarriers defeated #4 Chamberlain Cubs 78-69 on Friday, January 6th, in Dell Rapids.

The Quarrier defense held Beresford to just three points in the first quarter and led 13-3 at the first break Thursday night.  Dell Rapids then pushed the lead to 29-13 at halftime.  The Quarriers were held to just 20 points the entire second half, but the defense held Beresford to just 21 total points for the win.

Mason Peter, Tanner Heim, and Mason Schmidt all finished with 10 points in the game.  Jeffrey Schuch added eight points.  Schuch led the team with 11 rebounds in the game.  Heim finished with seven rebounds.  Austin Ellingson dished out five assists and had two steals.

On Friday night Dell Rapids handed Chamberlain their first lost of the season.  The Quarriers only scored 10 points in the opening quarter and trailed 14-10 at the break.  A breakaway slam dunk by Sheldon Siemonsma to tie the game at 14-14 with 7:00 to play in the half seemed to spark the Quarriers.  Dell Rapids outscored Chamberlain 24-19 in the second quarter and led 34-33 at halftime.  The momentum continued for Dell Rapids as they outscored the Cubs 25-11 in the third quarter to lead 59-44.  Chamberlain cut the lead to six points in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as they would get as Dell Rapids held on for the win.

Four players scored in double figures for the Quarriers.  Siemonsma led the team with 20 points.  Ellingson had a great game with 17 points, six assists, five rebounds, and three steals.  Heim finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.  Schmidt added 13 points and three rebounds.  Schuch tallied eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.  Carson Rentz added four rebounds and four assists.

Dell Rapids (5-1) will travel to Sioux Falls to play the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Tuesday, January 10th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
