Win Streak at Four for Cardinal Boys

DRSM LogoThe winning streak for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys was extended to four games after the Cardinals defeated the Deubrook Area Dolphins 61-48 on Friday, January 6th, in White.  St Mary had three players finish the game in double figures, and the defense forced 17 turnovers in the win.

The Cardinals led from start to finish in the game.  St Mary jumped out to a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.  The lead extended to 10 points at halftime at 32-22.  Deubrook cut the lead, but only by two points, by the end of the third quarter.  St Mary led 45-37.  The Cardinals then outscored the Dolphins 16-11 in the final quarter for the win.

St Mary shot 20-52 (39%) from the field, 9-19 (47%) from three-point area, and 12-15 (80%) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also finished with 32 team rebounds, nine assists, and 10 steals.  Deubrook was 20-55 (36%) from the field, 4-16 (25%) from three-point area, and 4-10 (40%) from the free-throw line.

Luke Brown led the Cardinals with 18 points, four rebounds, and four steals.  Austin Welbig finished with 16 points and two rebounds.  Zach Geraets added 10 points and four rebounds.  Connor Libis had seven points and five assists, and Garret Frost had six points.  Logan Gaspar pulled down four rebounds as well.

The Cardinals (5-3) travel to Parker on Tuesday, January 10th.

Quarrier Girls Win Again on the Road

NewDRLogoIn their fourth straight road game, the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls earned a 49-40 win over the Beresford Watchdogs on Thursday, January 5th, to improve their season record to 4-2.

Dell Rapids offense scored 17 points in the first quarter and led 17-12 at the first quarter break.  The lead doubled by halftime for Dell Rapids as they Quarriers pushed the lead to 10 points at 30-20.  The Watchdogs were able to hold Dell Rapids to just seven points in the third quarter, and Beresford closed the gap to 37-31 by the end of the third quarter.  The Quarriers, though, would not let go of the lead and outscored Beresford 12-9 in the final quarter for the win.

Jayda Knuppe led Dell Rapids in scoring with 17 points in the game.  Kali Graham added 11 points.

The Quarriers will play back-to-back nights early next week on the road.  Dell Rapids travels to Lennox on Monday, January 9th, and then to Tea on Tuesday, January 10th.  Big Sioux Media will have links to video streams for both of those games.

Cardinal Girls Drop Two During Week

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls team lost two games during the week to drop their record to 3-6 on the season.  The Chester Flyers defeated St Mary on Tuesday, January 3rd, by a score of 34-39.  The Cardinals then traveled to White on Thursday, January 5th, and lost to the Deubrook Area Dolphins 26-60.

The Cardinals started the game against Chester on a 7-0 run and led the Flyers 9-3 after the first quarter.  Chester was able to go on a run of their own in the second quarter and took their first lead of the game in the second.  Both teams were back and forth in the second quarter, and it was St Mary that held a 13-12 lead at halftime.  The Cardinals pushed their lead to 27-24 by the end of the third quarter, but the Flyers outscored St Mary 15-7 in the final quarter for the win.  Jackie Wolles had 11 points in the game, and Sydney Cook added another eight points for St Mary.

St Mary then faced a very tough Deubrook Area Dolphin team on Thursday, January 5th.  The Dolphins raced to a 24-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.  Deubrook Area led 42-15 at halftime and 54-19 at the end of the third quarter.  Wolles led the team with five points.  Cook and Ella Heinitz each had four points.

The Cardinals will play their next two games at home.  They will host Canistota on Thursday, January 12th, and then host Lake Preston as part of a double-header with the boys on Friday, January 13th.

Quarrier Boys Cruise to Victory

drvspipestone_bbb_1-3-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers cruised to a 72-46 win over the Pipestone Area Arrows at Dell Rapids High School on Tuesday, January 3rd.  The Quarriers outscored Pipestone in every quarter of the game.

Dell Rapids jumped out to a 21-13 lead after the first quarter.  They added to the lead in the second quarter and led 38-22 at halftime.  The Quarriers outscored Pipestone 16-13 in the third quarter and 18-11 in the fourth quarter.

The Quarriers shot 27-59 (46%) from the field, 5-18 (28%) from the three-point area, and 13-17 (76%) from the free-throw line.  They had a total of 35 rebounds, 17 assists, six steals, and limited their own turnovers to just eight.

Sheldon Siemonsma led a balance scoring attack with 14 points, which included four dunks.  Jeffrey Schuch added 13 points while bringing down nine rebounds.  Tanner Heim finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.  Carson Rentz had nine points and three assists.  Austin Ellingson dished out five assists to lead the team.

Dell Rapids (3-1) travels to Beresford for a Dak-12 game against the Watchdogs on Thursday, January 5th.

Quarrier Girls Back in Win Column

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers got back into the win column with a win over the Garretson Blue Dragons 61-32 on Tuesday, January 3rd, in Garretson.  It was the third of seven straight road games for the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids had two players in double figures on the night.  Kali Graham led the team with 13 points and also pulled down four rebounds.  Jayda Knuppe finished with 12 points.  Sydney Stofferhan added seven points on the night.  Aspen Hansen led the team with five rebounds, and Kaylee Hennen had four rebounds.  Garretson was led by Kindra Clark with 13 points.

The Quarriers (3-3) are back on the road Thursday, January 5th.  They will be in Beresford to take on the Watchdogs.

Comeback Falls Short for Quarrier Boys

drhsvssv_bbb_12-31-16After trailing by 14 points in the second half, the Dell Rapids Quarriers got within four points a couple of times late in the game, but couldn’t complete the comeback against the Sioux Valley Cossacks.  Sioux Valley defeated the Quarriers 81-72 at the Entringer Classic on Saturday, December 31st, in Brookings.

Both teams combined for 45 points in the first quarter as Sioux Valley ended the quarter with a 25-20 lead.  Dell Rapids was only able to score nine points in the second quarter allowing Sioux Valley to earn a 14-point halftime lead at 43-29.  Dell Rapids cut the lead to 53-48 by the end of the third quarter and was within four points a couple of times in the fourth quarter, but Sioux Valley was able to pull away late for the win.

Dell Rapids finished shooting 26-59 (44%) from the field, 8-25 (32%) from three-point area, and 12-17 (71%) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers also had 34 team rebounds, 16 assists, six steals and only turned the ball over eight times.

Four players ended in double figures for the Quarriers.  Sheldon Siemonsma had 20 points, six rebounds, and three assists.  Austin Ellingson had 13 points, four rebounds and four steals.  Jeffrey Schuch added 12 points and eight rebounds.  Mason Schmidt finished with 11 points.  Tanner Heim and Mason Peter both had six rebounds in the game.

The Quarriers (2-1) will host Pipestone Area on Tuesday, January 3rd.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Get Third Win in a Row

drsmvsestelline_12-31-16For the second time this month, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals defeated the Estelline Redmen.  This time the Cardinals beat Estelline 50-16 at the Entringer Classic on Saturday, December 31st, at Brookings High School.  The Cardinal defense only allowed 10 points total after the first quarter and forced 20 turnovers on 17 steals to lead St Mary to the win.

Estelline scored the first four points of the game and held the Cardinals scoreless for the first four minutes of the game.  However, St Mary’s offense found it’s rhythm outscoring Estelline 13-2 through the rest of the first quarter and held a 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.  The Cardinals then held Estelline to just three points in the second quarter, and St Mary pushed their lead to 31-9 at halftime.  The Cardinals would score the first nine points of the third quarter and never looked back in the second half.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 20-53 (38%) from the field, 6-21 (29%) from three-point area, and 4-6 (67%) from the the free-throw line.  St Mary had 38 total rebounds, 16 offensive and 22 defensive, along with 17 steals and 13 assists.  Estelline finished the game shooting 7-38 (18%) from the field in the game.

Connor Libis led the team with 27 points, five steals and three assists.  Luke Brown had five points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Logan Gaspar and Zach Geraets both had four points.  Gaspar also had eight rebounds, and Garret Frost had six rebounds.  Austin Welbig finished with four steals.  Libis was also named the game’s MVP.

St Mary has now won three games in a row and has improved their record to 4-3.  The Cardinals will travel to White to play the Deubrook Area Dolphins on Friday, January 6th.  Big Sioux Media will have a link to Deubrook Area’s Cube video stream.

Cardinal Girls Get Third Win of Season

DRSM LogoMaddie Schwebach knocked down the game-winning free throw as the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals defeated Tiospa Zina 42-41 at the Swiftel Classic on Thursday, December 29th, in Brookings.  Tiospa Zina had a 10 point lead with 5:45 to go in the third quarter, but that was also the last field goal they would make.  The Cardinals took the lead at 32-31 at the end of the third quarter.  St Mary had a six point lead with 4:42 to go in the game, and held on for the win.

St Mary finished 12-56 (21%) from the field, 0-2 from three-point area, and 18-35 (51%) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had a total of 48 team rebounds, 20 steals, but also turned the ball over 23 times.  Tiospa Zina shot 27% from the field and 64% from the free-throw line and turned the ball over 28 times.

Lexi Klein finished with a double-double in the game with 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Jackie Wolles had a team high 14 points in the game along with seven steals.  Schwebach finished with the game-winning point and also pulled down six rebounds.  Ella Heinitz had six points.

Cardinal Boys Even Season Record with Win

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals won their second game in a row and evened their season record at 3-3 with a 56-35 win over the Iroquois Chiefs on Wednesday, December 28th, at the Swiftel Classic in Brookings.

The game was close through the first three quarters.  St Mary held a three-point lead at 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.  Both teams scored 11 points in the second quarter, and the Cardinals went to the locker room at halftime with a 25-22 lead.  The Cardinals were able to get extend the lead to eight points by the end of the third quarter at 41-33.  The St Mary defense then only allowed two points in the final quarter and scored 15 to pull away for the win.

St Mary finished the game shooting 21-66 (32%) from the field, 8-26 (31%) from three-point area, and 6-10 (60%) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had a total of 38 team rebounds, 10 assists, and 16 steals.  The stat of the game was the turnover differential.  The Cardinals only turned the ball over seven times while forcing Iroquois into 23 turnovers.

The Cardinals were led in scoring by Connor Libis with 33 points.  Libis also had four steals.  Luke Brown finished with a double-double in the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Brown also had four assists and three steals.  Logan Gaspar and Garret Frost both had four points each in the game.  Zach Geraets pulled down five rebounds.  Austin Welbig finished with four assists.

St Mary will play Estelline on Saturday, December 31st, at 12:00 p.m. at Brookings High School.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Jim Schmidt Inducted to SD High School Basketball Hall of Fame

SIOUX FALLS – Thirteen former greats have been selected for induction into the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame.

The eighth annual induction banquet is at 1 p.m. on March 25 at the Ramkota Hotel in Sioux Falls. Ticket information will be announced soon on the Hall of Fame website at www.sdbbhof.com.

Members of the Class of 2017 include standouts from the decades of the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. They will increase Hall of Fame membership to 130.

During the banquet the 1987 Pine Ridge Thorpes will be honored as a Team of Excellence. Pine Ridge won the Class A state boys title and finished 26-0.

Hall of Fame Class of 2017:

* Joe Ashley, Pierre (Pierre 1979): The 7-foot Ashley recorded 405 career blocked shots and led the Governors to the Class A state championship as a senior. He played collegiately at Iowa State University and South Dakota State University.

* Ron Bertsch, Yankton (St. Lawrence 1961): Bertsch starred for the Wolves, ranking among the state’s career scoring leaders with 2,012 points. He then set a Yankton College record when he netted 1,606 points as a Greyhound.

* SuAnne Big Crow (Pine Ridge 1992): The late Big Crow scored 2,541 career points and led the Lady Thorpes to the Class A title in 1989. She tallied a state girls single-game record 67 points and was first team all-state three years.

* Jerry Buri, Montgomery, Texas (Hazel 1960): After scoring 1,937 points for the Mustangs, Buri was a three-year letterman at South Dakota State University. He helped the Jackrabbits to the 1963 NCAA College Division championship.

* Kriss Edwards, Seattle, Wash. (Watertown 1977): Edwards was a talented point guard who sparked the Arrows to the Class A championship in 1976. She went on to set University of Nebraska-Omaha career records for assists and steals.

* Gary Evjen, Sioux Falls (Sioux Falls Washington 1968): Evjen averaged 15 points per game as a Warrior senior. He then had 2,288 career points at Northern State University and was all-South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference four years.

* Terry Jordre, Aberdeen (Corona 1957): A skilled floor leader, Jordre was also a defensive stalwart for the Midgets. During his Northern State University career he and the Wolves won four South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference titles.

* John Lillibridge, Burke (Burke 1958): Lillibridge achieved career totals of 1,984 points and 1,008 rebounds for the Bulldogs. At the University of South Dakota he played basketball and was a record setting discus thrower.

* Guy Mackner, Sisseton (Sisseton 1965): A standout for the Redmen and an all-North Central Conference center for South Dakota State University, the 6-foot-7 Mackner was selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1969 NBA Draft.

* Donna Muir, Norfolk, Va. (Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 1978): First team all-state for three years, Muir averaged 23.2 points per game as a senior. She played collegiately for the Lady Statesmen of Delta State University (Miss.).

* Ann Pancoast, Ballwin, Mo. (Sioux Falls Washington 1981): Pancoast and the Warriors were 23-0 and Class A state champions in 1980. She was then all-North Central Conference three years for the University of South Dakota.

* Jim Schmidt (Dell Rapids St. Mary 1941): Known as “Sunny” Jim, the late Schmidt was chosen to the Catholic all-tournament team four years. While at South Dakota State University he was North Central Conference scoring champion twice.

* Mike Sisk, Mesa, Ariz. (Miller 1957): Sisk averaged 18 points per game in his final two seasons starring for the Rustlers. He was a three-year starter as South Dakota State University won the North Central Conference in 1959, 1960 and 1961.
