Seven Cardinals Receive DVC All-Conference Honors

Seven Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal basketball players received Dakota Valley Conference All-Conference honors for the 2021-2022 season.

Madala Hanson was a first time all-conference selection for the girls.  Ella Griffin was named to the second team, and Addyson Gilbert was an honorable mention.  John Pica and Dylan Mathis were second team all-conference selections.  Nic Gaspar was named to the third team, and Ty Brown was an honorable mention.

Huskies End Season for Cardinal Boys

Bridgewater-Emery defeated Dell Rapids St Mary for the second time in five days, however, this time it ended the Cardinal season.  The #7 seed Huskies beat the #2 seed Cardinals 61-47 in the second round of the Region 4B tournament on Tuesday, March 1st at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

In a hot, packed gym, the Cardinals got out to a fast start.  St Mary led 12-2 with 2:15 to play in the opening quarter.  The Cardinals finished the first quarter with a 14-7 lead.  Things then got quiet for the St Mary offense in the middle two quarters.  The Huskies held St Mary to just four points in the second quarter, which allowed them to build a 24-18 halftime lead.

The third quarter was a defensive battle.  The two teams combined for just 17 total points.  Bridgewater-Emery still held a 32-27 lead going into the fourth quarter.  The Huskies took advantage of 23 trips to the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, converting on 19 of them.  The difference at the free-throw line proved to be the biggest factor in the game as the Huskies took the win.

The Cardinals shot 33% (17-52) overall, 22% (5-23) from three-point area, and 8-9 from the free-throw line.  Bridgewater-Emery was 40% (18-45) from the field, 33% (4-12) from three-point area, and 81% (21-26) from the free-throw line.  The 13 more made free throws was the biggest stat difference in the game.

Dylan Mathis finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.  Nic Gaspar had 13 points and four rebounds.  John Pica added seven points, four rebounds, and two assists.  Ty Brown had four points, two rebounds, and five assists.  CJ Smith also had four points along with five rebounds.

St Mary’s season ends with an overall record of 15-6.

Huskies Stun Cardinal Boys on Senior Night

Playing in the final regular season game of the year, the Bridgewater-Emery Huskies stunned the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Friday, February 25th.  The Huskies led for almost the entire game and took the 54-48 victory on the Cardinal senior night.

The opening quarter was a defensive battle as both offenses struggled to find anything.  The two teams combined for 10 total points, and the Huskies led 6-4 at the break.  The Huskies built a nine-point lead, 16-7, with 4:48 to play in the second quarter.  The Cardinals cut the lead to one point at 16-15 and then again at 19-18 with :05 to play in the quarter.  Bridgewater-Emery hit a three-pointer with just seconds left to give them a 22-18 lead at halftime.

The Huskies were able to push their four-point halftime lead to seven, 33-26, with 3:25 to play in the third quarter.  St Mary went on a 7-0 run to tie the game, 33-33, which was the first tie since 4-4 early in the first quarter.  Bridgewater-Emery ended the third quarter, however, leading 37-35.  Another run by the Huskies gave them a 47-39 lead with 3:20 to go in the game.  The Cardinals were only able to get within three points, 51-48, after a three pointer by Nic Gaspar with :17 to go.  The Huskies made three of four free throws in the closing seconds to get the win.

St Mary finished the game shooting 38% (18-48) from the field, just 4-17 from three-point area, and 53% (8-13) from the free-throw line.  The Huskies were 44% (21-48) shooting overall, 3-14 on three pointers, and 9-16 from the free-throw line.  Bridgewater-Emery out rebounded St Mary 34-24 in the game.

John Pica had 13 points, four rebounds, three steals, and three assists to lead the Cardinals.  Gaspar had 11 points, five rebounds, two steals, and two assists.  Ty Brown also had 11 points along with four rebounds.  Dylan Mathis finished with 10 points, six rebounds, two steals, and two assists.

The Cardinals finish the regular season with a 15-5 record and the #2 seed in the Region 4B tournament.  St Mary will host a Region 4B game on Tuesday, March 1st and will play the winner of Bridgewater-Emery and Sioux Falls Luthrean.

Eight seniors for the Cardinals were recognized prior to the game.  This year’s seniors are Noah Reiff, Aiden Geraets, Brandon Cook, Ty Brown, Gabe Lamb, Luke Geraets, John Pica, and Seth Roemen.

Late Surge Lifts Howard over Cardinal Girls in Region 4B

Howard went on a 10-0 run to end the third quarter which carried the Tigers to a 60-46 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in the opening round of the Region 4B tournament in Howard on Tuesday, February 22nd.

The Cardinals opened the game on a 12-2 run and led 20-13 at the end of the first quarter.  The Tigers went on a 9-0 run in the second quarter to take a 22-20 lead.  The two teams traded baskets the remainder of the quarter, and Howard led 28-26 at halftime.  Most of the third quarter was back and forth as the two teams were tied 36-36.  Addyson Gilbert made a three-pointer to give the Cardinals a 39-36 lead.  That’s when the Tigers finished the third quarter on a 10-0 run for a 46-39 lead going into the fourth quarter.  Howard carried the momentum into the fourth quarter and outscored St Mary 14-7 for the win.

St Mary shot 29% (15-51) overall in the game, 30% (8-27) from three-point area, and 8-10 from the free-throw line.  Howard was 50% (23-46) from the field, 3-8 on three pointers, and 8-13 from the free-throw line.

Ella Griffin had 18 points, four rebounds, three steals, and two assists.  Madala Hanson had 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists.  Gilbert finished with seven points, six rebounds, and three steals.  Brianna Griffin added five points.

The Cardinals season ends with an overall record of 11-10.

St Mary Boys Make it Eight in a Row

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys extended their winning streak to eight after a 65-32 road win over the Baltic Bulldogs on Friday, February 18th.

At an early point in the first quarter, the Cardinals led by just one point at 5-4.  That margin was quickly extended to 10 points after a 9-0 run for a 14-4 lead with 2:15 to play in the first quarter.  St Mary ended the first quarter with a 20-6 lead and continued to roll from there.  They grew the lead to 37-14 by halftime and also led 58-23 at the end of the third quarter.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting an even 50% (26-52) from the field, 6-12 from three-point area, and 7-12 from the free-throw line.  Baltic was held to just 30% (13-44) shooting, 0-7 on three pointers, and 6-12 from the free-throw line.  St Mary also out rebounded the Bulldogs 41-19 in the game.

Four players finished in double figures, and two of them almost had a double-double.  John Pica had 15 points, nine rebounds, and two assists.  Dylan Mathis had 11 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.  Nic Gaspar also had 15 points along with four rebounds and two assists.  Ty Brown added 13 points, six rebounds, and two assists.  CJ Smith finished with four points, four assists, and two rebounds.  Brandon Cook had six points in the fourth quarter.

St Mary (15-4) will finish the regular season at home against Bridgewater-Emery on Friday, February 25th.

Centerville Puts Damper on Senior Night for Cardinal Girls

Free throws and rebounds were the big key to the game between the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals and Centerville Tornadoes on Tuesday, February 15th.  The Cardinals celebrated their two seniors, Addyson Gilbert and Courtney Brown, but it was the Tornadoes that celebrated the win, 55-49.

Centerville held a distinct advantage at the free-throw line as well as in total rebounds.  The Tornadoes were 19-31 from the free-throw line, while St Mary was just 3-13.  Centerville also out rebounded the Cardinals 48-34 in the game.  Those two stats proved to be the difference.

The Tornadoes had a seven-point lead, 13-6, at the end of the first quarter.  The Cardinals were able to cut that lead down to two points, 19-17, but Centerville pushed the lead to 29-21 by halftime.  The Cardinals still found themselves trailing heading into the fourth quarter, 38-31.  St Mary again got the game within a single possession, but could never quite complete the comeback as the Tornadoes held for the win.

St Mary shot 35% (20-57) overall and 22% (6-27) from three-point area.  Centerville was 33% (16-49) from the field and 21% (4-19) from three-point area.

Madala Hanson had 15 points, three rebounds, two assists, and three steals.  Brianna Griffin ended with nine points and three rebounds.  Ella Griffin added seven points, five rebounds, and four assists.  Whitney Warwick had six points.

The regular season ends for the Cardinals with an 11-9 record.  St Mary will begin Region 4B play on Tuesday, February 22nd.

Cardinal Boys Muscle Past Centerville

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys muscled their way past the Centerville Tornadoes at home on Tuesday, February 15th.  The Cardinals pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 63-51 win.

Centerville started strong hitting 8-13 shots in the first quarter to build a 19-12 lead.  St Mary’s defense then held the Tornadoes to just nine points in the second quarter, and the Cardinals held the halftime lead at 31-28.  The two teams scored 12 points each in the third quarter, and St Mary still led by three, 43-40, heading into the final quarter.  That’s when St Mary was able to pull away, outscoring Centerville 20-11 in the fourth for the win.

The Cardinals shot 47% (26-55) from the field, 36% (5-14) from three-point area, and 6-10 from the free-throw line.  The Tornadoes finished 46% (19-41) shooting, 33% (5-15) from three-point area, and 8-11 from the free-throw line.

John Pica had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Dylan Mathis finished with 18 points, five rebounds, four steals, and three assists.  Ty Brown also had double figures with 10 points , seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  CJ Smith added six points and three rebounds.

The Cardinals will travel to Baltic on Friday, February 18th.

Cardinal Girls Dominate in Complete Team Win

Every player for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals scored at least two points, had at least one rebound, and had at least one steal in a 70-38 win over the Lake Preston Divers on Monday, February 14th.

St Mary got out to a quick 8-0 start, but the Divers pulled within six points by the end of the first quarter, 17-11.  That was as close as Lake Preston would get.  The Cardinals outscored Lake Preston 22-10 in the second quarter for a 39-21 halftime lead.  They continued to come big on the defensive end which led to easy layups in the second half as well.

The Cardinals shot 43% (29-67) from the field, 29% (8-28) on three-point shots, and 4-10 from the free-throw line.  The Divers finished 30% (12-40) from the field, 21% (3-14) from three-point area, and 11-15 from the free-throw line.  St Mary forced 32 Lake Preston turnovers, 22 of those on steals.

Madala Hanson had 17 points, four steals, three assists, and two rebounds.  Courtney Brown had 12 points, three rebounds, three steals, and two assists.  Ella Griffin added 11 points, five rebounds, and two steals.  Brianna Griffin had nine points.  Addison Libis finished with six points.  Addyson Gilbert had five points, five rebounds, and five assists.  Maya Heinitz and Whitney Warwick both had three points each, and Sydney and Sierra Klein each had two points.

The Cardinals will host Centerville in their final regular season game on Tuesday, February 15th.

Comeback Falls Short for Cardinal Girls at DWU Classic

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals girls trailed by 14 points early in the fourth quarter to the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars.  St Mary got within two points, but couldn’t quite complete the comeback at the DWU Classic on Friday, February 10th.  The Cougars made enough free throws in the closing moments to hang on to a 55-48 win.

St Mary took advantage of cold shooting and turnovers by the Cougars in the first quarter.  The Cardinals led 12-7 at the first quarter break.  Unfortunately for the Cardinals, shots stopped falling in the second and third quarters.  McCook Central/Montrose scored 19 points in the second quarter and held a 26-25 halftime lead.  St Mary then scored just five points in the third quarter, and the Cougars led 41-30 going into the fourth quarter.  The Cardinals made their comeback in the fourth quarter, but came up just short.

The Cardinals shot 28% (18-64) overall in the game, 23% (6-26) from the three-point area, and 6-11 from the free-throw line.  McCook Central/Montrose was 39% (16-41) from the field, 36% (5-14) from three-point area, and 75% (18-24) from the free-throw line.

Madala Hanson had 18 points, six rebounds, and three steals.  Ella Griffin ended with 11 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and four steals.  Sydney Klein added six points, seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal.  Courtney Brown, Addyson Gilbert, and Brianna Griffin all had four points each.

The Cardinals will travel to Lake Preston for a make-up game on Monday, February 14th.

Defense and Free Throws Key to Big Win for Cardinals

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals and Howard Tigers squared off in a big Region 4B match-up in Howard on Thursday, February 10th.  It was a battle between the top two seeds in the region.  The St Mary defense held Howard to just three points in the final quarter for a 54-38 win.

The Cardinals had a lead after every quarter break, but the battle was tough.  St Mary held a two-point lead, 14-12, at the end of the first quarter.  They maintained that lead throughout the second quarter and led 28-22 at halftime.  The Cardinals continued to hold a six-point lead, 30-24, with 5:30 to play in the third quarter.  Howard then went on a 9-1 run to take a 33-31 lead with 3:22 to play in the quarter.  St Mary responded with a 7-2 run for a 38-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

After an early free throw by the Cardinals in the fourth quarter, CJ Smith and Nic Gaspar hit back-to-back three-pointers to give the Cardinals a 45-35 lead with 5:25 to play.  Howard’s only basket in the fourth quarter came on a three-pointer with 4:00 to go.  St Mary continued to build on their lead, making their free-throws down the stretch, for the victory.

St Mary shot 38% (19-50) from the field, 44% (7-16) from three-point area, and 69% (9-13) from the free-throw line.  Howard finished the game shooting 33% (16-48) overall, 2-13 on three pointers, and 4-8 from the free-throw line.

Smith had 18 points, five rebounds, and four steals in the game.  John Pica finished with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals.  Dylan Mathis added 10 points, three rebounds, and two steals.  Gaspar had eight points, nine rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
