Colton Legion 4-3 Through First Part of Season

The Colton Legion team has played about 1/3 of their 2021 season.  Through seven games they have an overall record of 4-3.

Their season started on June 2nd in Salem.  Colton fell just short in the game as Salem won 5-4.  Colton then went on an three-game winning streak.  They won a double-header on June 4th at Alexandria by scores of 14-6 and 18-10.  The third win came on their first home game of the season on June 10th.  They defeated humboldt/Hartford by a score of 10-3.

After the three-game winning streak, Lake Norden handed Colton two losses.  The two teams played a double-header on June 12th.  Lake Norden won the first game 10-5 and then the second game 12-6.

Colton’s latest game was on the road at Canova on June 15th.  They earned another win by a score of 4-1.

Dell Rapids Legion Scores 38 Runs in Two Wins over Flandreau

The Dell Rapids Legion baseball team traveled to Flandreau for a double-header and scored 38 runs in two wins on Tuesday, June 15th.  Dell Rapids won the first game 24-6 and then won the second game 14-1.

Both teams scored three runs in the first inning of the first game.  Flandreau then scored a run in the bottom of the second for a short-lived 4-3 lead.  Dell Rapids then scored three runs in the third, four more in the fourth, and then posted a whopping 14 runs in the fifth resulting in the 10-run rule win in five innings.

Caleb Kittleson had four hits, two doubles, and four RBIs.  Brady Larson had four hits, one double, and three RBIs.  Noah Swartwout had three hits and four RBIs.  Bryce Sommerfeld had two hits and two RBIs.  Riley Peter had a double and two RBIs.  Jake Steineke and Ashaun Roach-Valandra had a hit and RBI.  Kaeden Eastman also had a hit. 

Larson pitched five innings allowing six runs, four earned, on 10 hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Dell Rapids continued to light up the scoreboard in the second game.  They scored five runs in the first inning and eight in the second inning on their way to a 14-1 win in the second game. 

Kittleson had two more hits, one a double, with two RBIs.  Larson had two hits, one a triple, and an RBI.  Steineke and Roach-Valandra both had a double with three RBIs.  Eastman had two hits.  Swartwout and Andrew Van Dam both had singles.  Zeb Schumaker had an RBI. 

Van Dam pitched five innings allowing one run, unearned, on three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Gamecocks Win Postponed Game over Colman

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks hosted the Colman A’s in a make-up game on Tuesday, June 15th.  The Gamecocks rallied in the later innings for a 12-5 victory.

The Gamecocks did have an early lead after two runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Drew DeMers scored on an error, and Cam Quigley scored on a double-play to give Hartford-Humboldt a 2-0 lead.  After a run by Colman in the top of the second, Drew Maras had an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to push the lead back to two runs at 3-1. 

Colman tied the game in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run, and then took the lead in the top of the fifth on another two-run home run.  Colman led 5-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Gamecocks regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Broc Haldeman had an RBI ground out, and Cole Hellie drove home two on a single for a 6-5 lead.  Two more runs scored in the bottom of the sixth when Joe Hanisch scored on a steal of home and an RBI single by DeMers.  The Gamecocks scored three more times in the bottom of the seventh.  Hanisch had a two-run single and then later scored on an error.  The final run scored on an RBI double by DeMers in the bottom of the eighth.

DeMers had three hits, including a double, with two RBIs.  Hanisch had two hits and two RBIs.  Hellie had a hit and two RBIs.  Broc Haldeman and Devon Garry both had hits and an RBI.  Quigley, Noah Vettrus, and Cahd Morrison all had two hits. 

Micah Warrington pitched four innings allowing five earned runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  Garry pitched four innings allowing three hits with one walk and four strikeouts.  Haldeman pitched one inning allowing a hit and had one strikeout.

Dell Rapids 14U Fifth Inning Surge Seals Win

The Dell Rapids 14U team scored five runs in the first two innings and then six more runs in the fifth inning to earn an 11-3 win over Hamlin at home on Tuesday, June 15th.

Hamlin did get a run in the top of the first inning, but Dell Rapids took the lead for good in the bottom of the first inning.  Lincoln Fersdahl drove home two run for a 2-1 lead.  Dell Rapids added three runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI sacrifice fly by Cole Ruesink, an RBI single by Quinn Carr, and an RBI single by Brandon Schmidt to push the lead to 5-1.

Hamlin scored two times in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 5-3, and the scored remained the same until the bottom of the fifth inning.  The first seven batters for Dell Rapids reached base safely.  Noah Larson and Carson Crosby had RBI singles.  Larson later scored on an error.  Carson Maeschen scored on a passed ball, and Carr drove home two with a double.

Carr finished with three hits, one a double, with three RBIs.  Fersdahl had a single with two RBIs.  Ruesink, Schmidt, Larson, and Crosby all had a single and an RBI.  Logan Donovan and Maeschen also had hits.

Carr pitched two innings allowing one earned run with two walks and five strikeouts.  Ruesink pitched three innings allowing two runs, both unearned, on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts.  Fersdahl pitched two innings giving up one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.

HBC Red Wins Big over Tri-Valley White 14U

Tri-Valley White 14U scored the first run of the game in the top of the first, but it was all Hills-Beaver-Creek Red after that point.  HBC scored six in the bottom of the first, three in the second, and 10 more in the fourth to win the game 19-4 on Tuesday, June 15th.

Parker Hemme scored the first run for Tri-Valley in the top of the first.  Gage Egger had a steal of home in the top of the third inning.  Landon McGill had a bases-loaded walk for an RBI in the top of the fourth, and Dylan Christensen scored on a passed ball for the fourth run.

Tri-Valley was held to only two hits in the game.  Hemme and Egger both had a single. McGill had the lone RBI in the game.

Benjamin Myhre pitched an inning allowing six runs, four earned, on three hits with three walks.  Egger pitched two innings allowing 10 runs, nine earned, on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts.  Christensen pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing three runs, all unearned, with four walks and two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 14U Falls to Dynamite

Coming off a first place silver bracket tournament win in Mitchell, the Dell Rapids 14U softball team had another game on Monday, June 14th.  Team Dynamite’s early lead helped them hold off Dell Rapids 10-7.

Dynamite scored a run in the top of the inning.  Dell Rapids tied the game with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI ground out by Brynlee Kriens.  Dynamite scored two runs in the top of the second and another run in the top of the third.  Dynamite lead 4-1 after three innings.

Dell Rapids cut the lead in half, 4-2, with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI double by Makaylah O’Meara.  Both teams had big innings in the fifth inning, each scoring five runs.  Dell Rapids’ five runs came on two outs.  Elly Olson had an RBI single and later scored on a dropped third strike, O’Meara then hit a three-run home run to cut the lead to 9-7, but that was as close as Dell Rapids could get. Dynamite added one more run in the sixth.

O’Meara had three hits, a home run, triple, and double, along with four RBIs.  Olson had two hits, including a triple, with an RBI.  Kriens had a hit and RBI, and Aubrey Hubers also had a hit.  Kya Alderson allowed 10 runs on the mound on 12 hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts.

Mulder Hits Game-Winner for West Central Royal 14U

With the game tied 9-9 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Cooper Mulder hit a single to left field scoring Landon Holewa for the walk-off game-winner giving West Central Royal 14U a 10-9 win over Flandreau on Monday, June 14th in Humboldt.

Flandreau struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but West Central scored twice in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Mulder and an RBI ground out by Stone Loof.  West Central extended the lead when Preston Hostetler scored on an error to make the score 3-1.  Flandreau tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the fourth with two runs.

West Central regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by Holewa.  Both teams scored in the fifth inning.  Mulder scored on a single by Quincey Stephens, and West Central led 6-4 after five innings.  Flandreau took thee lead in the top of the sixth with four runs, but West Central responded with three in the bottom of the sixth.  Mulder drove home two with a single to tie the game 8-8.  CJ DenBoer scored on a wild pitch to give West Central the lead again 9-8.  Flandreau tied the game in the top of the seventh inning, 9-9, to force extra innings, but Mulder’s hit ended the game in the eighth.

Mulder finished with three hits and four RBIs.  Holewa had four hits, one a double, with two RBIs.  DenBoer had three hits.  Hostetler finished with two hits.  Loof and Stephens both had a hit and an RBI.  Gavin DeHaven had a double.  Lando Whiting and Cody Opitz both had hits.

DenBoer pitched four innings allowing three runs, all unearned, on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts.  Whiting pitched two innings allowing five runs, two earned, on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  Hostetler pitched two innings allowing one earned run on a hit with two walks and two strikeouts.

Early Lead Key in PBR Victory

Dell Rapids PBR built an early 4-0 lead and then held off a late rally by Salem to get a 10-8 win at home on Sunday, June 13th.  It was the second league win in a row for Dell Rapids PBR.

Weston Hanson drove home the first run in the bottom of the first with an RBI double.  Riley Calhoon had a two-run single, and Grant Sweeter scored on an error in the bottom of the second inning to give PBR a 4-0 lead. 

Salem tied the game after the top of the fifth inning.  The Cubs got a run in the top of the third and three more in the fifth to make the score 4-4.  PBR regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Tanner Solberg and Riley Hoffman.  Nate McKee added a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to extend the PBR lead to 8-4.  Salem picked up two runs in the top of the eighth to pull within two runs, 8-6, but again PBR got two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.  Hanson scored on an error, and Carter Gullickson got an RBI sacrifice fly to give Dell Rapids a 10-6 lead.  Those two runs were vital to the win as Salem scored twice in the ninth, but was unable to complete the comeback.

Calhoon had two hits and two RBIs.  Hanson, Hoffman, and Solberg each had a double and RBI.  David Kirby had two hits.  McKee had a hit with two RBIs.  Matt Gillogly and Sweeter both had hits. 

Hoffman pitched six innings allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts.  Gillogly pitched three innings allowing four runs, all unearned, on one hit with five walks and five strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 14U Softball Wins Silver Bracket at Mitchell Tournament

The Dell Rapids 14U softball team won the silver bracket of the Lowell Rang Memorial Tournament in Mitchell on Saturday, June 12th and Sunday, June 13th.

Dell Rapids played in a pool play format on Saturday to determine which tournament bracket and seed they would play in a single-elimination tournament on Sunday. 

In the opening game of pool play, Dell Rapids fell to TSC Hurricanes 9-5.  Dell Rapids got three runs in the bottom of the first inning after the Hurricanes scored one, but the Hurricanes scored three runs in the third, three runs in the fourth, and two more in the fifth.  Dell Rapids was held to just one run in the third and one in the fifth after the first inning.  Elly Olson and Kya Alderson both had two hits in the game.  Alderson  pitched six innings allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Dell Rapids then played Midwest Speed, and Midwest Speed scored six runs in the first two innings and three more in the sixth to get a 9-4 win over Dell Rapids.  Brynlee Kriens had two hits and an RBI.  Alderson pitched all six innings allowing nine runs on 16 hits with nine strikeouts.

In the final pool play game on Saturday, Dell Rapids earned a victory over Brookings Outlaws.  Brookings scored three times in the top of the first, but Dell Rapids got four runs in the bottom of the inning and then added five more in the bottom of the second for a 9-3 lead.  They had one more run in the third and two more in the fourth for a 12-3 advantage.  Brookings scored five times in the top of the fifth, but Dell Rapids held off Brookings’ rally for the win.  Mikaylah O’Meara had two doubles and five RBIs.  Alderson had five innings on the mound allowing eight runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts.

Dell Rapids earned the #2 seed in the silver bracket and got a first round bye.  Dell Rapids played the Mankato Peppers in the semifinals, and using a seven-run third inning, advanced to the championship game with an 11-1 victory.  O’Meara had three hits, including a triple and double, with two more RBIs.  Addy Van’t Hof had two hits and two RBIs.  Alderson pitched four innings allowing just one run on three hits with four strikeouts.

Dell Rapids drew a familiar opponent for the championship game.  They took the TSC Hurricanes again, but this time Dell Rapids was victorious after scoring eight runs in the middle innings.  Dell Rapids got the win 11-4.  O’Meara had three hits, one of them a double, with five RBIs.  Olson had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Alderson pitched once again throwing six innings allowing four runs on 11 hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts.

Mudcats Win Seventh Straight Game

The Dell Rapids Mudcats are on a roll as they won their seventh straight game on Sunday, June 13th.  Dell Rapids defeated the Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks 15-8 in Humboldt.

Dalton Lehnen started the scoring with a two run double in the top of the first inning.  After the Wood Ducks got a run back int he bottom of the second, Trevor Freudenthal had an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth.  Chad Hunt scored a run on an error, and Travis Peters brought home another in the top of the fifth inning for a 5-1 lead after five innings.

The Mudcats then scored seven times in the top of the sixth inning.  Grant Olson scored on a wild pitch.  Hunt had a two-run double, and Josh Roemen followed with a two run double of his own.  Peters later scored in the inning on a wild pitch.  The Mudcats led 12-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Wood Ducks scored six runs of their own to keep the game going.

Hunt and Roemen both had RBI hits in the seventh inning, and Hunt had one more RBI single in the ninth.

Hunt and Roemen both finished with three hits and four RBIs.  Hunt had one double, and Roemen had two.  Peters had two hits and an RBI.  Dalton Allen had two hits.  Olson had a hit and an RBI.  Ty Hoglund finished with a hit, and Bauer had a double.

Hoglund was the winning pitcher in the game.
