Dell Rapids Legion Falls to Canova at Home

The Dell Rapids Legion team out hit Canova in the game, but Dell Rapids committed four errors, and Canova defeated Dell Rapids 4-1 on Tuesday, June 29th at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

Canova struck first for three runs in the top of the third inning.  A walk, single, errant throw on a bunt, and a dropped third strike led to three runs for Canova for a 3-0 lead.

Dell Rapids got a run back in the top of the fourth on back-to-back doubles.  Noah Swartwout had the first double, and then Kaeden Eastman followed with a double for the RBI. 

Canova got their fourth run on a fielder’s choice ground ball in the top of the sixth inning.  Dell Rapids looked to be putting together a rally in the bottom of the seventh.  Eastman started the inning with a single, and Jake Steineke followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs, but the next three batters went down in order ending any rally for Dell Rapids.

Eastman had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Swartwout, Steineke, and Riley Peter all had a double in the game.

Swartwout pitched five innings allowing four runs, just one earned, on three hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.  Caleb Kittleson pitched two innings not allowing a hit while striking out three batters.

Dell Rapids 16U Splits on Back-to-Back Nights

The Dell Rapids 16U baseball team split two games played on back-to-back nights.

Dell Rapids scored 14 straight runs on their way to a 19-4 win over the Tea Bolts in Tea on Monday, June 28th.  Dell Rapids had a four-run top of the first inning, added three more in the top of the third, and then scored seven times in the top of the fourth to lead 14-0.  Tea score four times in their half of the fourth inning, but Dell Rapids scored five more in the top of the fifth before the game ended on the 10-run rule.

Aiden Boechler had two hits, a double and triple, and three RBIs.  Will Jaton had two hits and an RBI.  Even Nelson had a double and three RBIs.  Kade Kremer, Jace Entringer, CJ Smith, Aiden Geraets, and Sutton Williams all had a hit and RBI.  Dylan Mathis had a double.  Kamren Koster had a single, and Micah Pickard, Braeden Nirva, and Ethan Kringen all finished with an RBI.

Smith pitched three innings allowing one runs on a hit with two walks and six strikeouts.  Nelson pitched an inning allowing four runs, two earned, on two hits with three walks and a strikeout.  Brayden Pankonen pitched an inning with one strikeout.

Dakota Valley erased a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh by scoring three teams to get an 8-7 come-from-behind win over Dell Rapids on Tuesday, June 29th.

Dakota Valley scored two times in the bottom of the first to lead 2-0.  Dell Rapids tied the game with two runs in the top of the second inning only to see Dakota Valley get another run in the bottom of the inning.  Dell Rapids tied the game again in the top of the third at 3-3.  The score remained 3-3 until the top of the fifth inning.  Dell Rapids scored three times, but Dakota Valley answered with two runs, and Dell Rapids led 6-5 after five innings.  Dell Rapids scored one more time in the top of the seventh to take a two-run lead, 7-5, into the bottom of the ninth.  The first four batters reached safely for Dakota Valley, two of them scoring, to tie the game 7-7 before an out was recorded.  The winning run was scored with one out on a passed ball to end the game.

Dell Rapids only had three hits in the game.  Kringen had a hit and an RBI.  John Mortrude had a double.  Smith had the other hit.  Mathis and Joe Rechtenbaugh both had an RBI.

Rechtenbaugh pitched four innings allowing three earned runs on two hits with eight walks and a strikeout.  Williams pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits with five walks and a strikeout.

Mudcats Rally Late in Win over Madison

The Dell Rapids Mudcats rallied for five runs in the eighth inning to score a 12-8 win over the Madison Broncos on Sunday, June 27th at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

Dell Rapids did have an early lead.  The Mudcats scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning.  After Madison scored one in the top of the third, Dell Rapids added two more in the bottom half of the inning for a 4-1 lead after three innings of play.

The Broncos got another run in the top of the fourth, and then three more in the top of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.  The lead was short-lived as Dell Rapids scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game 5-5.  The Broncos responded with three more in the top of the sixth.  The Mudcats scored two times to pull within a run at 8-7 after six innings.  Dell Rapids then sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring five times to take a 12-8 lead.  Madison was retired in order in their half of the ninth inning.

Dalton Lehnen had three hits, including a home run, and had three RBIs.  Kris Regas had two hits and an RBI.  Grant Olson had two hits, one a double.  Ty Hoglund and Dalton Allen both had two hits.  Mark Abrahamson had a hit and two RBIs.  Travis Peters had a single and an RBI.  Chad Hunt and Trevor Freudenthal both had singles.

John Spaeth was the winning pitcher after relieving the starter Abrahamson. Spaeth threw no-run, no-hit baseball over the last three innings, and the Mudcats played flawlessly on defense, after committing six miscues in the first six innings.

Sioux Valley Scores Late, Defeats Tri-Valley 16U

Sioux Valley erased a three-run deficit by scoring eight straight runs for a 12-7 win over Tri-Valley 16U on Monday, June 28th.

Tri-Valley put together a big bottom of the first inning.  Noah Haynes and Beau Keith had RBI singles.  Tanner Van Asselt had a two-run single to give Tri-Valley a 4-0 lead.  Sioux Valley scored three in the top of the second inning to cut the lead to 4-3.   They then tied the game with a run in the top of the third.  Tri-Valley regained the lead in the bottom of the third.  Holden Rise had a two-run single, and Cole Focken scored on an error.  Tri-Valley led 7-4 after three innings.

Sioux Valley then went on a run.  They scored two runs in the top of the fourth, five more in the top of the fifth, and one run in the top of the seventh for the 12-7 win.

Haynes had two hits and an RBI.  Focken also had two hits.  Rise and Van Asselt both had a hit and two RBIs.  Keith had a hit and an RBI. 

Keith pitched four innings allowing six runs, one earned, on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.  Focken pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing five earned runs on a hit with four walks.  Aidan Heitkamp pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing an unearned run.

PBR Can’t Overcome Early Lead by Gamecocks

Dell Rapids PBR lost to the Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks 12-4 in Humboldt on Sunday, June 27th.  The Gamecocks had two five-run innings on their way to the win.

The first of the two five-run innings for the Gamecocks came in the bottom of the first inning.  They added another run in the bottom of the second inning for a 6-0 lead.

PBR cut into the lead in the top of the third inning.  Nate McKee was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for an RBI.  Tanner Solberg drove home two more runs with a single to make the score 6-3.  PBR added another run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Brandon Geraets to pull PBR within two runs at 6-4.  The Gamecocks then added a run in the bottom of the fifth and five more in the bottom of the seventh.

Solberg had two hits with two RBIs.  McKee and Geraets both had a single and RBI.  Carter Gullickson finished with two hits, including a double.  Riley Hoffman had a single.  Solberg pitched five innings allowing seven runs, three earned, on nine hits with five walks and two strikeouts.  Matt Gillogly pitched three innings allowing five earned runs on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Early Lead Enough for Gamecocks over PBR

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks scored six times in the first two innings, which was enough, as the Gamecocks won 12-4 over Dell Rapids PBR on Sunday, June 27th.

Broc Haldeman drove home the first run in the bottom of the first inning with a single.  Drew Maras and Clayton Hanisch both drew bases-loaded walks.  Adam Hentges had two RBIs on a single for an early 5-0 lead.  Joe Hanisch had an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning to give the Gamecocks a 6-0 lead.

PBR was able to cut the lead in half in the top of the third with three runs.  They scored another run in the top of the fourth, and after the Gamecocks went scoreless in the bottom of the inning, Hartford-Humboldt led 6-4 after four innings.

The Gamecocks picked up a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Cole Hellie.  Hartford-Humboldt scored five more times in the bottom of the seventh to put the game out of reach.  J. Hanisch had a solo home run to lead off the inning.  Chad Morrison and Noah Vettrus both had RBI singles.  Drew DeMers then added an RBI double.

J. Hanisch had two hits, a home run and a double, with two RBIs.  DeMers had two hits, one double, and two RBIs.  Hentges had two hits and two RBIs.  Haldeman and Hellie both had two hits, each of them with a double, and an RBI.  Tyler Renken had two hits.  Maras, Morrison, and Vettrus all had a hit and RBI.  Cam Quigley also had a hit.

Micah Warrington pitched five innings allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.  Quigley pitched three innings without allowing a hit and striking out one.  Vettrus pitched the last inning striking out two batters.

Gamecocks Hold off Late Rally By Flandreau

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks scored five runs late in the game, and then held off a Flandreau rally in the ninth to beat the Cardinals 8-6 in Cornbelt League action on Thursday, June 24th.

After two scoreless innings, Flandreau got on the board with a run in the top of the third.  The Gamecocks tied the game in the bottom of the fourth.  Drew DeMers scored on a tag-up off a fly ball from Broc Haldeman even though Flandreau got two other runners out to complete a triple play.

The Gamecocks took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Chad Morrison.  DeMers hit a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth to give the Gamecocks a 3-1 lead.  Hartford-Humboldt added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Cole Hellie had an RBI sacrifice fly, Drew Maras had an RBI double, and Noah Vettrus also had an RBI double to make the score 6-1.

Flandreau scored a run in the top of the eighth inning, but the Gamecocks got two more runs in the bottom of the inning when two runs scored on an error off a ground ball by Joe Hanisch.  Flandreau put together a rally in the top of the ninth inning scoring four times with two outs, but the Gamecocks were able to get the final out to secure the win.

Hanisch had two hits, one a double, in the game.  Devon Garry also had two hits.  DeMers had a home run and an RBI.  Haldeman had a triple and an RBI.  Maras and Vettrus both had a double and RBI.  Chad Morrison also had a hit.

Tyler Renken pitched 7 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on five hits with five walks and six strikeouts.  Devon Garry pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Lehnen Dominates as Mudcats Beat PBR

Dalton Lehnen dazzled on the mound for the Dell Rapids Mudcats as he threw seven shutout innings racking up 20 strikeouts as the Mudcats defeated Dell Rapids PBR 10-0 in eight innings at the annual “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” night on Friday, June 25th at Rickeman Field.

Lehnen struck out the first nine batters of the game before Carter Gullickson got a double in the top of the fourth inning.  Tim Wilhelmsen had the other hit allowed by Lehnen, a single in the fifth inning.

The Mudcats scored in six of the eight innings as they built their lead throughout the game.  Nate Henry had the game-ending hit, a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Not only did Lehnen have 20 strikeouts on the mound, he had two hits and three RBIs in the game.  Henry had two hits, one a home run, and an RBI.  Mark Abrahamson had a two-run home run.  Both Ty Hoglund and Chad Hunt had two hits, including a double.  Travis Peters had a double.  Jimmy Bauer and Grant Olson both had a hit.  Hunt also pitched one inning allowing a hit.

Gullickson finished with a double for PBR.  Wilhelmsen had a single as did Brandon Geraets.  Riley Hoffman pitched five innings allowing six runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.  Trey Randel pitched two-plus innings allowing four runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

Parker Defeats Tri-Valley White 14U in Five Innings

Parker scored in every inning, including scoring 10 runs in the fifth inning, in a 21-2 win over Tri-Valley White 14U on Friday, June 25th.

Parker had scored 11 runs in the first four innings before Tri-Valley was able to get on the board.  Tri-Valley got a run in the bottom of the fourth in an RBI ground out by Matthew Cypher.  Tri-Valley’s other run came in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI ground out by Dylan Christensen.

Denton Bicknase had two hits for Tri-Valley.  Gage Egger had a triple.  Parker Hemme finished with a double, and Grant Schlueter had a single.

Bicknase pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing nine runs, four earned, on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts.  Levi Kretzschmar pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing one earned run on one hit and one walk.  Christensen pitched two innings allowing 11 runs, six earned, on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts.

West Central 16U Blanks Volga

West Centrals 16U got a 3-0 shutout win over Volga on the road on Thursday, June 24th.  West Central scored in the final three innings of the game for the win.

The first run of the game was scored in the top of the fifth inning.  Camden McDonald drove home Gage Nelson with an RBI single.  West Central added to the lead with another run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Dalton Mulder.  Owen Heath added to the lead with an RBI sacrifice fly scoring Duece Sherard for a 3-0 lead.

McDonald finished with three hits and an RBI.  Mulder had a hit and RBI.  Dylan Stromer added a double.  Sherard and Derek Renken both had a single in the game.

Mulder pitched three innings allowing no hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.  Heath pitched four innings allowing just two hits while recording four strikeouts.
