West Central 16U Beats Madison with Late Inning Rally

West Central scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Madison White 5-2 on Tuesday, July 13th.

Madison got the first run in the top of the third inning, but West Central scored twice in the bottom of the inning.  Justin Zirpel had an RBI triple and Camden McDonald followed with an RBI single for a 2-1 lead.  Madison tied the game in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI ground out.

The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the sixth inning.  Xzavian Ferris got an RBI single to give West Central a 3-2 lead.  Duece Sherard followed with a two-run double for the 5-2 advantage.

McDonald had three hits and an RBI.  Zirpel had two hits, one a triple, with an RBI.  Ferris had a hit and two RBIs.  Cade Vander Woude had two hits.  Sherard finished with a double and two RBIs.  Dalton Mulder, Gage Nelson, and Derek Renken all had a single.  Renken pitched six innings allowing two earned runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.  Andrew Zimmer pitched an inning allowing one hit with two strikeouts.

Mudcats Win Make-up Game over Colman

The Dell Rapids Mudcats traveled to Colman on Tuesday, July 13th for a make-up game from July 6th.  Dell Rapids broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth and eventually pulled away for a 7-2 win.

The Mudcats scored two in the top of the first inning.  Nate Henry and Trevor Freudenthal both had RBI singles to give Dell Rapids a 2-0 lead.  Colman tied the game in the bottom of the third with two runs of their own on a two-run single by Chase DeWitt.  Henry gave the Mudcats the lead in the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run.  Grant Olson added an RBI ground out later in the inning for a 4-2 lead.  Chad Hunt had an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 5-2.  Freudenthal brought home two more runs in the top of the ninth with a single to make the score 7-2.

Henry had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs. Freudenthal also had two hits and two RBIs. Ty Hoglund and Mark Abrahamson both had two hits. Hunt and Kris Regas both had a single. Olson had an RBI. Abrahamson pitched eight innings for the win giving up two runs on four hits with 11 strikeouts. John Spaeth pitched an inning without allowing a hit.

Late Score Seals Win for PBR

Dell Rapids PBR hosted the Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks on Tuesday, July 13th in a make-up game from May 27th.  PBR took the lead in the fifth and scored a late run to seal the victory, 5-3.

The Wood Ducks got on the board in the top of the first inning when a run scored on a PBR error.  PBR scored two in the bottom of the fourth.  Tanner Solberg reached on an error, which also scored Nate McKee.  Beau Behrend also reached on an error, and Grant Sweeter scored for the 2-1 lead.  The Wood Ducks responded with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, but PBR also scored two more in the bottom of the fifth.  Carter Gullickson had a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning for PBR, and Weston Hanson scored on a passed ball.  PBR got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Hanson scored again on a passed ball to push the lead to 5-3.

Gullickson had a home run and an RBI.  Hanson had a double.  Riley Hoffman and McKee both had a single in the game.  Behrend and Solberg each had an RBI.  Trey Randel pitched 7 2/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.  Hoffman pitched 1 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball while striking out three batters.

Dell Rapids Legion Falls to Garretson

After taking nearly a week off between games, Dell Rapids Legion traveled to Garretson on Tuesday, July 13th.  The home took the lead in the bottom of the third inning, and Garretson got the 6-4 win.

Dell Rapids struck first when Caleb Kittleson scored on an error of a ground ball by Zeb Schumaker in the top of the second inning.  Garretson tied the game in the bottom of the inning.  Dell Rapids took the lead again in the top of the third inning.  Landon Ruesink had an RBI sacrifice fly, and Kaeden Eastman scored on a wild pitch to give Dell Rapids a 3-1 advantage.  Garretson, however, scored three times in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead.  Garretson added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to 6-3.  Eastman had an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, but that was the last score of the game.

Noah Swartwout had two hits, including a triple.  Ruesink and Eastman both had a hit and an RBI.  Kittleson had a double, and Bryce Sommerfeld had a single.  Swartwout pitched three innings allowing four earned runs on five hits with four walks and a strikeout.  Jake Steineke pitched three innings allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Tri-Valley 16U Has Late Rally for Win over Flandreau

Tri-Valley 16U scored three times in the fourth for an 8-5 win over Flandreau at home on Monday, July 12th.

Flandreau scored the first two runs of the game.  They got a run in the top of the first and one in the top of the second for a 2-0 lead.  Tri-Valley then scored five times in the bottom of the second inning.  Holden Rise drew a bases-loaded walk, and Lawson Loiseau scored on an error to tie the game.  Beau Keith had a two-run single, and Kaden Egger stole home for a 5-2 lead after two innings.

Flandreau got two runs back in the top of the third inning and then tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth.  Tri-Valley, however, scored three times with two outs which proved to be the game-winning runs.  Cole Focken had a two-run single, and Mason Hendrixson had an RBI single for the 8-5 advantage.

Focken had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Keith had a hit and two RBIs.  Hendrixson had a hit and an RBI.  Everett Althoff and Duncan Snethen both had singles.  Egger and Rise each had an RBI.  Keith pitched four innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits with five walks and five strikeouts.  Egger pitched three innings allowing two hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

West Central 14U Qualifies for State after Second Place Region Finish

West Central 14U qualified for the 14U South Dakota State A tournament after a second place finish in the Region 3A tournament Friday, July 9th through Monday, July 12th.

It wasn’t an easy path for West Central to qualify for state as they lost their opening round game to Madison Gold 2-1 on Friday morning.  Both teams scored a run in the third inning, but Madison Gold got the game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning.  CJ DenBoer and Jesse Jost had the only two hits in the game for West Central.  Caden Alfson pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing an unearned run on two hits with four walks and six strikeouts.  Landen Holewa pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing an earned run on a hit and four walks with four strikeouts.

West Central rebounded against Wagner on Saturday.  West Central advanced with a 5-1 victory.  Wagner scored the first run in the top of the first, but West Central took the lead for good in the bottom of the first with two runs.  They added two more in the second and another in the fourth.  Alfson had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.  Keaton Vessells had a double and an RBI.  Holewa and DenBoer both had singles.  Jack Sebert had an RBI.  Anthony Lanham pitched six innings allowing an unearned run on no hits and six walks with eight strikeouts.  Sebert pitched an inning allowing a hit and a walk.

In their second game on Saturday, West Central defeated Tri-Valley Maroon 15-6 to keep their run going.  Tri-Valley Maroon had a 3-1 lead after the first inning.  West Central scored three in the top of the second only to see Tri-Valley score three more in the bottom of the second to keep the lead at 6-4.  West Central pulled with in a run at 6-5 with another run in the top of the third.  West Central then had an eight-run fifth inning with two more in the sixth to get the win.  Alfson and two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Cooper Mulder had two hits and two RBIs.  Vessells had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Jost had a hit and an RBI.  Orlando Whiting had a double.  Holewa and DenBoer also had a hit.  Jost pitched two innings allowing six runs, three earned, on five hits with four walks and a strikeout.  Vessells pitched five innings allowing just one hit and five walks with 10 strikeouts.

The momentum continued for West Central on Sunday as they got another win in the tournament, this time over Lennox 10-0.  West Central scored in every inning but the third inning and held Lennox to only three hits in the game.  Holewa had two hits, including a double, with three RBIs.  Jost had two hits and an RBI.  Sebert had two hits.  Alfson had a double and two RBIs.  Vessells had a hit with two RBIs.  Cain Grocott had a double, and Mulder had a single.  Zach Lorang had an RBI.  Sebert pitched all five innings allowing three hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

The win put West Central into the state tournament and into the championship game in a rematch with Madison Gold.  West Central put together another great offensive game scoring in five of the six innings taking a 12-2 win.  Vessells had four hits, including two doubles, with three RBIs.  Grocott had a hit and two RBIs.  Alfson had a double and an RBI.  Mulder finished with a single and an RBI.  Jost had a hit, and Nick Lorang had an RBI.  Jacob Kono pitched six innings allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with two walks and a strikeout.

The win over Madison forced a second championship game to determine who would be the #1 rep for Region 3A.  Both teams scored three runs in the first inning.  West Central took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, but Madison scored four times in the top of the sixth inning.  West Central got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth, but Madison got the 7-6 victory.  N. Lorang had two doubles and an RBI.  Grocott had a double and an RBI.  Sebert also had a double and an RBI.  N. Lorang pitched three innings allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits and four walks with four strikeouts.  Grocott pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing four runs, none of them earned, on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.  Holewa pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing a hit with two strikeouts.

Tri-Valley Maroon 14U Falls to West Central 14U in Region 3A

The Tri-Valley Maroon 14U team saw their season come to an end at the Region 3A tournament on Saturday, July 10th.  West Central 14U scored 10 runs late in the game to get the 15-6 victory.

West Central scored a run in the top of the first inning, but Tri-Valley took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first.  Aiden Bunde had an RBI ground out.  Kaiden Bernards followed with an RBI single, and Tristen Bunde drew a bases-loaded walk for a 3-1 lead.  West Central then scored three times in the top of the second for a 4-3 lead.  Tri-Valley responded with another three-run inning in the bottom of the second inning.  A. Bunde reached on an error scoring Alex Wingen.  Brody Dybvig scored on an error, and Carter Sorenson had an RBI single to give Tri-Valley a 6-4 lead.

The score remained 6-4 heading into the top of the fifth inning.  West Central then scored eight times and then added another two runs in the top of the sixth for a 15-6 lead. 

Sorenson had two hits and an RBI.  Bernards had a single and an RBI.  Wingen, Dybvig, and Landon Jensen all had hits.  A. Bunde and T. Bunde both had an RBI.  Dybvig pitched four innings allowing six runs, two earned, on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts.  Bernards pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing six runs, three earned, on three hits and a walk.  Madison pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing three runs, none of them earned, on two hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

The Grooming Cottage Holds Grand Opening at New Location

The Grooming Cottage held a ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration on Saturday, July 10th.  They are located at 403 E 4th Street and have been open at that location since July 1st.

The grand opening celebration was open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  B-Squad Dog Rescue was at the store from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with adoptable dogs there for a meet and greet.  Donations made to B-Squad during the celebration registered people for a basket giveaway.  Pupcakes were also served during the celebration.

The Grooming Cottage is owned by Brenda Hyde and is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from grooming and retail, and the retail section is open on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Late Rally Not Enough for Gamecocks

A four-run rally in the seventh inning was not enough for the Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks as the Canova Gang held on for a 5-4 win on Sunday, July 11th.

Canova built a 5-0 by scoring a run in the top of the fourth and four more in the top of the fifth inning. The Gamecocks put together a four-run seventh inning. Tyler Renken and Chad Morrison back-to-back RBI ground outs to cut the lead to 5-2. Joe Maras had a two-run home run in the inning as well to pull the Gamecocks within a run at 5-4. Hartford-Humboldt threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth by getting two runs on base, but they were unable to get the tying run home.

Drew DeMers and Joe Hanisch both had three hits in the game. Maras had a home run and two RBIs. Cole Hellie, Drew Maras, and Clayton Hanisch all had singles. Renken and Morrison both had an RBI. Noah Vettrus pitched four innings allowing an unrearned run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout. D. Maras pitched three innings allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits with a walk and strikeout. J. Hanisch pitched an inning allowing just one hit. Broc Haldeman also pitched an inning with a walk and strikeout.

Svoboda Home Run Lifts Wood Ducks to Victory

Blake Svoboda hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning which proved to be game-winning hit as the Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks defeated the Flandreau Cardinals 4-3 on Sunday, July 11th.  Drew Eldeen had two hits, including an RBI double in the third inning.
