Quarrier Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match in Tea

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team dropped a five-match thriller in Tea to the Titans on Thursday, September 9th.  Dell Rapids has not played a home match since August 26th.  The Quarriers have gone 4-3 during that time.

The Titans took the first set of the match 25-16.  Dell Rapids was able to get an extra-time win in the second set, winning 26-24.  The Titans took the third set by a 25-19 score.  The Quarriers forced the fifth set with a 25-19 win of their own in the fourth set.  The Titans were able to win the match with a close 15-12 win in the fifth and final set.

Kenzie Garry led the team with 11 kills on the night.  Sophi Randall added 10 kills.  JoJo Henry finished with seven kills.  Riley Hill and Randall both had four ace serves.  Kylee Fiddelke finished with three.  Randall led the team with 10 blocks.  Fiddelke and Garry both had eight blocks each.  Five players finished in double figures in digs.  Hill had 17 digs.  Emma Molskness had 13 digs.  Garry finished with 10 digs, and Henry and Randall both had 10 digs each.  Hill finished with 16 set assists, and Randall had 12 set assists.

Dell Rapids will be back home on Tuesday, September 14th when they host the Canton C-Hawks.

Cardinal Volleyball Earns Another Road Victory

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team has not had a home match since August 26th.  Since that opening-season home match, the Cardinals went 3-1 in a tournament and now have won three straight road matches.  St Mary defeated the Canistota Hawks in straight sets on Thursday, September 9th.  The set scores were 25-7, 25-22, and 25-11.

Courtney Brown had 15 kills and nine digs in the match.  Maya Heinitz had five kills, seven digs, and two blocks.  Brianna Lindeman finished with 13 set assists, nine digs, four kills and two ace serves.  Ella Griffin had six set assists, four ace serves, three kills, three digs, and a block.  Madala Hanson finished with seven set assists and a dig.  Josie Baumberger added eight digs and an ace serve.  Addy Gilbert had two kills and two digs, and Brianna Griffin had three blocks, two kills and a dig.

The Cardinals will be back home on Monday, September 13th when they host the Sioux Falls Lutheran Eagles.

West Central Boys Golf Wins Third Straight Tournament

The West Central Trojan boys golf team is proving to be one 0f the teams to beat in Class A this year.  The Trojans won their third straight tournament on Thursday, September 9th.  West Central finished five strokes better than Sioux Falls Christian to place first with a team score of 327.

Peyton Bettcher finished second individually with a score of 78.  Trey Even was fourth with a 78 as well.  Kamden Zomer was 14th with a round of 84.  Anthony Lanham had a 20th place finish with a score of 87.  Connor Eisenbeisz finished with an 88, and Cole Miles had a round of 90.

The Trojans will play in the Elk Point-Jefferson Invitational at The Pointe Golf and Event Center on Thursday, September 16th.

Tri-Valley Boys Golf Team Travels to Vermillion

The Tri-Valley Mustang boys golf team traveled to Vermillion to play in the Vermillion Invite on Thursday, September 9th.  The Mustangs finished with a team score of 390 in the tournament.

Josh Leiseth finished 22nd with a round of 87.  Lance Dewitt had a round of 99.  Carson Sanders finished with a 101.  Mayson Rise had a round of 103.  Riley Carlson had a 106, and Cole Focken ended the day with a 110.

The Mustangs will play in a triangular at Flandreau on Tuesday, September 14th.

Quarrier Boys Golf Competes at Vermillion Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team participated in the Vermillion Invite with 13 other teams on Thursday, September 9th.  Dell Rapids finished with a team score of 432.

Carter Traill had the low score on the day with a 100.  Nick Snyder and Tyler Tjaden both had a round of 110.  Oscar Anderson finished with a 112.  Ryder VanZee had a round of 117, and Gage Schultz finished with a 132.

Dell Rapids will play at the Elk Point-Jefferson Match Play Invitational held at The Pointe Golf and Event Center on Thursday, September 16th.

Vaccine Clinic to be Held at Dell Rapids School

Avera Medical Clinic of Dell Rapids will be hosting a COVID-19 Immunization clinic at Dell Rapids School.  The first dose for interested students and staff will be on Tuesday, September 14th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  The second dose will be held on Tuesday, October 5th.  The clinic will only be available for staff and students 12 years of age and older, but parents can accompany their children during the shot if they wish.  A permission form is needed before administration of the vaccine, which can be found by clicking here. 

Dell Rapids Public School hosted a Covid-19 Vaccine Informational Town Hall on Wednesday, September 8th with Dr. Mike Elliott, MBA from Avera McKennan Health.  The town hall was streamed live and recorded by Big Sioux Media.  The entire town hall can be viewed in the archive video below.

Cardinal Girls 8th, Boys 10th at De Smet Cross Country Invite

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls cross country team placed eighth and the boys team tied for 10th at the De Smet Invite on Thursday, September 9th.  The girls team finished with a total of 80 points.  The boys team had a total of 111 points.

Cami Wolles placed 25th individually with a time of 23:50.10.  Lucy Vargas was 36th with a time of 24:50.95.  Sierra Klien had a 44th place finish with a time of 25:50.66

Noah Reiff placed 30th with a time of 20:21.  Seth Roemen finished with a time of 20:48 for 32nd place.  Gabe Nelson finished in a time of 27:11.

St Mary will be at the Flyer Invite at Valley View Golf Course on Wednesday, September 15th.

Mustangs Fall Short Again in Five Sets

Playing in their first home match of the season, the Tri-Valley Mustangs played their second straight five-set match on Thursday, September 9th.  And for the second time in a row in a five-set match, the Mustangs fell just short of their first win.  The Vermillion Tanagers won by set scores of 16-25, 25-16, 18-25, 25-16, and 15-10.

Hannah West and Kenzie Atwood both had a strong defensive match.  West finished with 15 digs, and Atwood had 13 digs.  Erica Bicknase led the team with six kills.  Megan Wenzel had four kills.  Meg. Wenzel also had four solo and four assisted blocks.  Maddie Wenzel had two solo blocks.  Nevaeh Grann had 11 set assist, and Brookelyn Stieben finished with nine set assists.  Grann also led the team with two ace serves.  West and Stieben both had one ace serve.

Tri-Valley will host the Dell Rapids Quarriers on Thursday, September 16th for their next match.

Jon Thomas “Tom” Jones

Jon Thomas “Tom” Jones, a highly decorated Vietnam veteran of Mount Vernon passed away at the age of 80 from a brain aneurysm on August 26th. His Memorial Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 10, 2021 at Kahler-Brende Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be one-hour prior to the start of the service. Inurnment will be in the Hills of Rest Cemetery, Sioux Falls. www.kahlerfh.com

Tom was predeceased by his parents, Lloyd and Amy Jones; sister, Barb Schmidt; and daughter, Debbie Soulek. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Jones; daughter, Julie (Steve) Stofferahn of Dell Rapids; stepdaughter, Lisa LeMond; stepson, Austin LeMond; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Dell Rapids Hosts Cheer Invite

Dell Rapids held their Dell Rapids Competitive Cheer Invite on Tuesday, September 7th.  Eleven teams were initially scheduled to perform, but four of them had to miss.  The other six teams that participated were Dakota Valley, Sioux Valley, Elkton-Lake Benton, Platte/Geddes/AC/DC, Deubrook Area, and Dell Rapids St Mary.  Each team performed just one time during the night.

Sioux Valley took home first place with a score of 177.0.  Dakota Valley was second with 138.5 points.  Elkton-Lake Benton placed third with 122.0 points, just edging Dell Rapids with 120.5 points who finished fourth.  Deubrook Area was fifth with 118.5 points.  Platte/Geddes/AC/DC had 108.5 points, and Dell Rapids St Mary finished with 76 points.

The Quarriers are scheduled to perform at the Pheasants Invite in Redfield on Tuesday, September 14 for their next competition.  The Cardinals are scheduled to perform at the Brookings Invite on Saturday, September 18th for their next event.
