Quarrier Girls Fall to Madison with Unkind Fourth Quarter

December 10, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Photo taken and used with permission by Tammy Chamley

It did not matter if the Quarriers had an open shot or a contest shot, the ball just wouldn’t fall through the hoop for them in the fourth quarter.  Madison took advantage of the bad luck turning a 33-33 tie into a 50-40 on Thursday, December 9th.  It was the first game for both teams to start the 2021-2022 season.

Both teams took a while to get going offensively to start the game.  Madison held a 3-1 lead with 2:45 to go in the opening quarter.  The Bulldogs outscored Dell Rapids 8-4 the rest of the quarter for an 11-5 lead.  After the Bulldogs built a 15-5 lead, Dell Rapids went on a 14-4 run to tie the game 19-19.  Madison got a late free-throw to lead 20-19 at halftime.

The Quarriers opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 26-20 lead with 4:35 to play in the quarter.  This was the largest lead of the night for Dell Rapids.  Madison regained the lead in the final minute of the quarter, 33-31, but Mady VanOverbeke made a tough layup to tie the game 33-33 heading into the fourth quarter.

That’s when the baskets quit falling for the Quarriers.  Dell Rapid did not get their first point of the fourth quarter until Zoey Hilmoe made a free throw with 2:26 to play in the game.  By that time, Madison went on an 11-0 run for a 44-33 lead.  The Bulldogs maintained that lead for the win.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 29% (15-52) from the field, 16% (3-19) from three-point area, and 41% (7-17) from the free-throw line.  The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 49%.  The Quarrier defense was tough all night forcing 26 Madison turnovers.

Hilmoe led the team in scoring with 14 points and also had three steals.  Jayme Schmidt had nine points, four rebounds, and three assists.  Haileigh Barnhart had six points, eight rebounds, and two assists.  Liz Price had four points and three rebounds.  VanOverbeke finished with five steals and three assists along with two points.

Dell Rapids (0-1) will travel to Sioux Falls Christian on Tuesday, December 14th.

JV Results

The Dell Rapids Quarrier junior varsity opened their season on Thursday night in Madison. The Quarriers dominated the Bulldogs from the opening tip off en route to a 31-8 victory. Sophomore Shelby Welbig recorded a double-double as she scored 14 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, and picked up four steals to lead the Quarriers. Freshman Elly Olson scored 11 points and handed out three assists. Clara Justice contributed five rebounds, three steals, and two points. Kerrigan Kindopp handed out three assists and scored two points. Catherine Naillon scored two points. Reagan VanZee had three rebounds and two steals.

The coaches and players would like to welcome and say Thank You to this years girls basketball statisticians: Graci Crosby, Tori Lodmell, Brook Spoonemore, Kylie Prochaska, and Cassie Reider.

Dell Rapids City Council Approves New Liquor License Ordinance

December 10, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids City Council approved the second reading of a new restaurant liquor license ordinance during their regular meeting on Monday, December 6th.  The council approved the new ordinance, Ordinance 903, unanimously.

This ordinance is a specific license that will allow new restaurants in Dell Rapids to be able to serve alcohol, provided they are approved for the license, as long as the total gross sales of alcohol does not exceed 40% of total revenue.  The ordinance requires that all holders of this new license submit an annual financial report to the city proving they meet the 40% criteria.

This ordinance only includes “full-service restaurants”.  The ordinance defines such a business as one in which a waiter or waitress delivers food and drink offered from a printed food menu to patrons at a table, booth, or bar area.  The business shall have a dining room(s), a kitchen, and the number and kinds of employees necessary for preparing, cooking, and serving of meals.  Any restaurant that only serves fry food orders or foods such as sandwiches, hamburgers, or salads would not be considered as “full-service”.

The reason this ordinance was proposed and approved is because the city is limited to the number of liquor licenses according to state statute based on the population of Dell Rapids.  All available licenses the city has are currently issued.  This ordinance will allow the city flexibility offer this new type of liquor license to a new restaurant.
