Deubrook Snaps Quarrier Girls Winning Streak

January 19, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team had their three-game winning streak broken by the Deubrook Dolphins on Saturday, January 17th.  Deubrook defeated Dell Rapids 60-46 at the Hanson Classic in Mitchell.

Head coach Jeff Dvorak said, “This game was very perplexing.  We shot 46% from the field, held their leading scorer to three points, out-rebounded them, and yet were solidly beaten.”

Deubrook held a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.  They pushed that lead to nine by halftime at 30-21.  Each team scored 12 points in the third quarter, and Deubrook kept their nine point lead at the end of the third quarter at 42-33.  The Dolphins then outscored Dell Rapids 18-13 in the final quarter.

The Quarrers finished 18-39 from the field and shot 60% (3-5) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids out-rebounded the Dolphins 25-23, however, the Quarriers turned the ball over 27 times in the game.

Averi Pankonen had 17 points.  Emma Paul added seven points and three rebounds.  Brittney Siemonsma had four points and seven rebounds.

“We seemed very slow moving the ball, cutting and defending…just lacked energy.  We could say that our late return/game in Beresford last night left us out of gas, but we need to find a little more ‘fight’, guts and leadership when we play in a classic like this regardless of playing a late game the night before.  This was certainly a learning opportunity for us,” said Dvorak.

The Quarriers fall to 6-4 on the year.  Dell Rapids will host West Central on Tuesday, January 20th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Dell Rapids shot 33% (14-42) from the field and 56% (15-27) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers also had 36 rebounds and turned the ball over 12 times.

Quarrier Boys Remain Undefeated

January 19, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team remained undefeated in regular season and conference play with a 61-45 win over Beresford on Friday, January 16th, in Beresford.

“Our pressure defense was outstanding early in the game and our players were flying around all over the court as we jumped out to an 18-0 first quarter lead.  We were able to generate turnovers early and our guards did a good job of pushing the ball in transition,” said head coach Jason Fersdahl.

Dell Rapids did not allow a single point in the first quarter, and the Quarriers held an 18-0 lead at the first break.  The pressure defense continued in the second quarter, and the Quarriers outscored Beresford 16-11 to take a 34-11 lead into halftime.

“Beresford was able to hit some perimeter shots in the second half to cut into our large lead, but our guys responded by buckling down on defense once again in the 4th quarter,” said Fersdahl.

Beresford found some offensive rhythm in the third quarter, outscoring Dell Rapids 20-10 to cut the Quarrier lead to 44-31.  That was as close as Beresford would get as the Quarriers closed out the game outscoring the Watchdogs 17-14 in the final quarter.

“We got careless with the ball in the second half and we ended the night with a season high in turnovers, which was disappointing because we were hoping to get a lot more shots attempts up in this game.  We did not shoot the ball very well from the perimeter, but we did finish well when our players drove to the basket or entered to the post as we finished the night shooting 62% from inside the arc,” added Fersdahl.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 48% (25-52) from the field, just 13% (2-15) from the three-point area, and 64% (9-14) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had 30 total rebounds, turned the ball over 18 times, had 11 assists, and 17 steals.

Ty Hoglund finished with 23 points, four rebounds, and four steals.  Zane Schumaker added 13 points, six rebounds, and six steals.  Tanner Heim had nine points, and Adam Karst and Ben Hammer each had five points apiece.

The Quarriers improve to 7-0 overall and 4-o in the Dak-12 Conference.  Dell Rapids will travel to Garretson to take on the Blue Dragons on Tuesday, January 20th.
