Quarrier Wrestlers Finish Sixth at Tri-Valley

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team finished sixth at the Tri-Valley tournament on Saturday, January 13th. Dell Rapids finished with 136.0 points. Winner finished first with 224.5 points. Elk Point-Jefferson was second with 161.0 points, and Lennox finished third with 159.0 points.

The Quarriers had seven wrestlers that placed in the tournament. Ben Cavigielli finished first in the 220-weight class. Jacob Vogel, Canyon Lowman and Nick Palmer all had second place finishes. Gage Carr placed third, Trevon Cross finished fourth, and Trystan Stahl had a sixth place finish.

Dell Rapids will host a Dak-12 meet on Tuesday, January 16th. It will be parent’s night during the event. The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarriers Scorches Nets in Redfield

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team lit up the scoreboard against the Groton Area Tigers at the Pheasant Shootout in Redfield on Saturday, January 13th. The Quarriers defeated the Tigers 86-57.

Mason Schmidt electrified the Quarrier crowd early in the game. Schmidt started the game with two straight dunks to give Dell Rapids an early 4-0 lead. Schmidt was not done as he also knocked down four three-point shots and scored 18 points in the first quarter alone. Dell Rapids rode the hot hand of Schmidt to a 27-13 first quarter lead.

The Quarriers continued their hot shooting in the second and third quarters. The Quarriers outscored Groton 20-11 in the second quarter to take a 47-24 lead into halftime. Dell Rapids then added 28 more points in the third quarter and led 75-40 after the third quarter as their cruised to the victory.

Dell Rapids finished shooting 41% from the field. They shot 39% from three-point area and also shot 71% from the free-throw line. They had a total of 48 team rebounds, 27 team assists, and only turned the ball over six times.

Schmidt finished with a game-high 32 points along with eight rebounds and two assists. Carson Rentz added 18 points on six made three-point shots. Rentz also dished out six assists. Jeffrey Schuch had nine points, seven rebounds, and 10 assists. Elijah Story had eight points, and Logan Heim had seven points and 13 rebounds. Eddie Price added six points and six rebounds.

Dell Rapids (5-3) will host Garretson on Monday, January 15th. The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Nighthawks Rally Against Quarrier Girls

The Tripp-Delmont/Armour Nighthawks rallied in the second half to defeat the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls 54-46 at the Hanson Classic in Mitchell on Saturday, January 13th.

Dell Rapids led by six points at 19-13 after the first quarter of play. The Quarriers extended that lead to 12 points with 3:30 to play in the first half, but the Nighthawks cut the lead to three points at 30-27 by halftime. Tripp-Delmont/Armour continued the run into the third quarter and outscored Dell Rapids 20-14. The Nighthawks led 47-40 heading into the final quarter. Dell Rapids was only able to score two points in the final quarter as the Nighthawks took the victory.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 33% from the field, just 23% in the second half. The Quarriers were 17% from three-point area and 60% from the free-throw line. Both teams had 14 turnovers in the game. Dell Rapids had 36 team rebounds and 14 team assists.

Jayda Knuppe led the team with 14 points and eight rebounds. Aspen Hansen had nine points. Kaylee Henned added seven points, while Emma Paul and Sydney Stofferahn both had six points each. Stofferahn also had eight rebounds. Ravyn Hoffman led the team with four assists.

Dell Rapids (7-3) will travel to Hartford to play the West Central Trojans on Tuesday, January 16th.

Second Half Surge Lifts Cardinal Boys

A second half surge sent the Cardinal fans home happy on Friday, January 12th. The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals boys basketball team defeated the Lake Preston Divers 77-51 at Lake Preston High School.

After trailing by six points at 18-12 in the first quarter, the St Mary Cardinals were able to get the game tied at 30-30 at halftime. From that point forward, the St Mary Cardinals dominated. St Mary outscored Lake Preston 23-10 in the third quarter for a 53-40 third quarter lead. The Cardinals then scored 24 points in the fourth quarter while holding the Divers to just 11 points as St Mary cruised to the victory.

Three players finished in double figures for the Cardinals. Connor Libis finished the game with 23 points. Max Herber added 20 points, and Luke Brown tallied 17 points.

St Mary (5-3) will play Lake Preston again in Lake Preston on Monday, January 15th. The Cardinals and Divers will meet in the opening round of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament at 6:00 p.m.

Cardinal Girls Drop Two Tough Games

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team dropped two tough games on back-to-back nights Thursday, January 11th and Friday, January 12th.

The Cardinals fell to the Canistota Hawks 55-48 Thursday night in Canistota. The Hawks led by five points at the end of the first quarter 20-15. St Mary got the game within a point at 27-26, but Canistota finished the second quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 33-26 lead into halftime. The Cardinals closed the gap by the end of the third quarter to four points at 41-37. St Mary was within two points at 48-46 with 3:00 to play in the game, but the shots wouldn’t fall for the Cardinals the remainder of the game. St Mary was only able to score two more points, and Canistota took the win by seven points. Ella Heinitz led the Cardinals with 24 points in the game.

The Cardinals hit the road for the second night in a row traveling to Lake Preston on Friday. The Cardinals fell to the Divers 62-52. St Mary scored 15 points in the first quarter and trailed by one at 16-15. Lake Preston, however, outscored the Cardinals 17-7 in the second quarter to take a 35-22 lead at halftime. The lead for the Divers grew to 22 points in the third quarter, but St Mary as able to get it down to 15 at 49-34. St Mary would outscore Lake Preston 18-13 in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the Divers held for the win. Maddie Schwebach led St Mary against Lake Preston with 18 points.

The Cardinals (3-6) will play the Lake Preston Divers again on Tuesday, January 16th in the opening round of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament. The game will be played in White at Deubrook High School at 6:00 p.m. Big Sioux Media will have a link to the Deubrook webcast.

Dell Rapids Native One of Four to be Inducted in Lancer Athletic Hall of Fame

YANKTON, SD – January 11, 2018 – Mount Marty College (MMC) Athletics is proud to announce four new members to be inducted in to the Lancer Athletic Hall of Fame. The formal induction ceremony will be held on June 22, 2018 as part of the Mount Marty College Summer Reunion and Lancer Club Summer Party; however, the inductees will be introduced at half time of the men’s basketball game on Saturday, January 27th at Laddie E. Cimpl Arena.

The following individuals will be introduced:

Michelle Amundson Schumacher – Women’s Basketball (2006-2010)
Shumacher was named 1st Team All-Conference all four years. She was named NAIA 2nd Team All American her senior season, and twice was named Honorable Mention by the NAIA. At graduation, she held six Lancer records, and was in the Top 10 Career Charts in 14 categories. She led the nation in 3 point shooting percentage her senior year. She was instrumental in leading the Lancers to the NAIA National Tournament twice, and a conference regular season championship. She was the 2010 GPAC Champions of Character award winner. During Schumacher’s time as a Dell Rapids Quarrier, she set a number of school records, was named to the Class A All-State team three years, helped her team to an undefeated 2005-2006 season which included a state title, and was named Miss Basketball for South Dakota.

Jason Nelson – Baseball (1996-1999)
One of the greatest hitters in Lancer history, Nelson is the career record holder for batting average and home runs, His batting average was best by .41 points. At the time of his graduation, he was in the top six for career runs, and three other top five single season marks. He was named 1st Team All-Conference (SDIC) all three season he played, and was part of four conference season and tournament championships.

Jeremy Grady – Baseball (1994-1997)
Grady graduated as part of the winningest class in the history of Lancer athletics, being part of 127 baseball victories. He was known as a great defensive catcher (.976 fielding %) and, while stealing statistics were not kept, and for his outstanding arm, with opponents rarely trying to steal on him. He was named SDIC All-Conference in 1996 (2nd Team) and 1997 (1st Team). His teams won the NAIA South Dakota District his first two years, and then won the SDIC Conference his junior and senior seasons.

Laura (Wortmann) Morrison – Track and Field (2006-2009)
The four time All American in the shot put and the discus, Morrison graduated as the most decorated thrower in Lancer history. She twice placed 2nd in the discus at the National Meet, and in the process set the South Dakota College Women’s record in 2008. She holds every shot put and discus record for the Lancers, and was twice named the Mount Marty College Female Athlete of the Year. In 2009, she was named the GPAC Performer of the Meet, collecting 20 points by winning the shot put and discus, and setting the GPAC record in the discus.

2018 SD Legislative Sessions – Dan Ahlers Week 1 Update

Dear Constituents,

Thank you for choosing me to represent you in Pierre. Each week during session, I will give updates on issues in Pierre. This week I will cover the impact of Federal Tax Reform, Medicaid, and the state budget.

The passage of the federal tax reform will impact several aspects of state government. Fortunately, the version that passed preserves the tax credit for bonding. Had this provision been removed, the cost for publicly bonded facilities, like schools, would have increased significantly. There is a 15% reduction in the Federal Low Income Housing Tax Program. This program provides tax credits for low income and affordable housing. These tax credits are tied to the corporate tax rate. The corporate tax rate was cut from 35% to 21%. This cut certainly benefits South Dakota corporations, but will compound the affordable housing shortage and the recruitment of much need workers in South Dakota.

The State will be proposing changes to the Medicaid program. The Governor is working with IHS (Indian Health Services) to get full federal reimbursement for tribal members even if the services are provided by a non-IHS facility. Currently, state Medicaid pays more than 96 million dollars for native health care services. The state has also filed an 1115 Medicaid waiver. A section 1115 waiver provides states an opportunity to test existing or pilot new ways to deliver and pay for health care. The State is proposing a two year pilot program in Minnehaha and Pennington counties that would impact approximately 1,300 Medicaid recipients. Participants would be automatically enrolled in an intensive employment and training services within the Department of Labor.

In Appropriations, we began state agency budget hearings. Thus far, we have reviewed the budget and funding requests for thirteen agencies. These budgets include the Governor’s Office, Legislature, Secretary of State and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. The Governor has recommended no inflationary increase to education, most Medicaid providers and state employees. We continue to struggle recruiting teachers, health care professionals in Medicaid supported facilities (like nursing homes) and in state government. Many of our surrounding states pay more and offer better benefits. We have a workforce shortage in South Dakota. Comparable pay is a real workforce development challenge. I am concerned that if we do not find money to provide some increase to these areas, it will further compound our existing problems. One of the more interesting items from our budget hearings came from the Public Utilities Commission (PUC). Due to the corporate tax cuts at the federal level, the PUC is requiring the utility providers to return these savings to rate payers. This may take two years to fully realize results, but South Dakota taxpayers should see some kind of rate reduction or rebate from their utility providers.

Madison Edges Quarrier Wrestling

The Madison Bulldogs edged the Dell Rapids Quarriers 34-30 at “Madison Square Garden” night in front of a big crowd at Madison High School on Tuesday, January 9th.

Jacob Vogel, Trevon Cross, Layne Hess, Lincoln Richeal, Ben Cavigielli, and Nick Palmer all earned wins on the night.

The Quarriers will be at the Tri-Valley Tournament on Saturday, January 13th, at Tri-Valley High School.

Parker Stops Cardinal Boys Win Streak

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team head their four-game win streak snapped on Tuesday, January 9th . The Cardinals lost to Class A Parker Pheasants 73-40 at Parker High School.

St Mary trailed by only five points after the first quarter at 17-12, but Parker pushed the lead to 11 points at 35-24 at halftime. Parker then used a 30-12 third quarter difference to take complete control of the game. The Pheasants led 65-36 after the third quarter. Parker then outscored St Mary 8-4 in the final quarter.

The Cardinals shot 31% from the field in the game, but just 21% from three-point area and 33% from the free-throw line. St Mary also had 22 team rebounds and 10 steals.

Connor Libis had a team-high 17 points. Luke Brown added seven points. Connar Kangas had six points. Weston Geraets had a team-high three steals, and Max Herber had a team-high seven rebounds. Parker was led by Trey Christensen with 19 points.

St Mary (4-3) will travel to Lake Preston for a double-header with the girls on Friday, January 12th. Both games of the double-header can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

SF Christian Sinks Quarrier Boys

The #2 ranked Sioux Falls Christian Chargers shot the ball well against the Dell Rapids Quarriers and won 77-40 on Tuesday, January 9th at Dell Rapids High School.

Dell Rapids had an early 8-3 lead with 6:00 to go in the first quarter, but the Chargers went on a 12-2 run the remainder of the quarter for a 15-10 lead. They continued to cruise from there. Sioux Falls Christian scored 24 second-quarter points and led 39-21 at halftime. The Charger defense held Dell Rapids to just five third-quarter points, and they outscored the Quarriers 38-19 in the second half for the win.

Carson Rentz had 13 points and seven rebounds in the game. Elijah Story had nine points. Mason Schmidt finished with eight points, and Jeffrey Schuch finished with five points and seven rebounds. The Chargers were led by Will Garnaas with 18 points.

Dell Rapids (4-3) will travel to Redfield for the Pheasant Shootout on Saturday, January 13th. The Quarriers will play Groton Area at 6:00 p.m. The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
