St Mary Cheer Wins Own Invite

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal competitive cheer team won their own invite on Monday, August 31st.  The Cardinals finished first among the five teams that competed.  The Dell Rapids Quarriers also competed in the event along with Arlington/Lake Preston, Deubrook, and Parkston.

The Cardinals finished with an average score of 127.25 between their two routines.  Dell Rapids placed second with a score of 125.5.  Deubrook was third with 110.75 points.  Parkston finished fourth with 106.25 points, and Arlington/Lake Preston finished with 98.5 points.

The Quarriers will travel to Watertown on Tuesday, September 1st, then to Dakota Valley on Saturday, September 5th, and then host their own invite on Tuesday, September 8th.  The Cardinals will not perform again until the Quarrier Invite on September 8th.

West Central Girls Soccer Remains Unbeaten

The West Central Trojan girls soccer team remained unbeaten after two home matches on Friday, August 28th and Saturday, August 29th.

West Central opened the season with three straight wins.  They earned victories over Watertown, Tea Area and Vermillion.  The Trojans then earned a draw against Brandon Valley on August 25th.

The Trojans hosted Belle Fourche on Friday, August 28th.  West Central’s offense could not be stopped as they earned an 11-0 victory.  West Central continued to roll on Saturday, August 29th when they hosted St Thomas More.  The Trojans picked up another victory, this time by a score of 7-0.

West Central (5-0-1) travels to Dakota Valley on Tuesday, September 1st.

Tri-Valley has Two Top 10 Finishers in First Cross Country Meet

The Tri-Valley Mustang cross country team had two top 10 finishers in their first cross country meet of the 2020 season.  Tri-Valley participated in the John Collignon Invitational in Madison on Saturday, August 28th.

Brie Peters finished third individually in the girls 4,000 meter varsity race with a time of 17:14.48.  Nate Hargreaves placed sixth in the boys 5,000 meter varsity race with a time of 20:08.45.

Teagin Gacke had a time of 18:26.87 in the 4,000 boys JV race.  Three runners participated in the girls 3,000 meter JV race.  Lizzy Dahl had a time of 14:08.51.  Zoey Dissing had a time of 14:47.76.  Savanna King finished in 15:02.90.

Tri-Valley will be at the McCook Central/Montrose Invitational in Salem on Tuesday, September 1st.

Mustang Football Team Falls in First Game of Season

The Tri-Valley Mustangs lost their home and season opener to the 2020 football season on Friday, August 28th.  The Mustangs lost a close, defensive battle to the Sioux Valley Cossacks 12-6.

Neither team’s offense was able to get much going in the first half in a huge defensive battle.  The score remained 0-0 at halftime.  Sioux Valley scored first with 6:25 to go in the third quarter with the two-point conversion failing.  The score heading into the fourth quarter was 6-0 in favor of Sioux Valley.

The Cossacks got another score with 9:25 to play in the game to push their lead to 12-0.  Tri-Valley cut the lead in half with 5:10 to go on a four-yard touchdown pass from Mason Mathieu to Cheston Fowlds.  The two-point conversion was no good, and the score was 12-6.  The Mustangs were unable to get the tying score, and Sioux Valley took home the win.

Tri-Valley finished the game with 42 rushing yards and 40 passing yards.  Levi Hanson had seven carries for 28 yards to lead the team.  Mathieu was 5-14 passing for 40 yards.  Hanson had three catches for 32 yards, and Fowlds had the touchdown catch of four yards.  Jaden Siemonsma led the team with eight tackles.  Own Besmer, Ethan Nehlich, and Mathieu all ended with seven tackles each.

Tri-Valley (0-1) will have an open date as of now on Friday, September 4th.  They will be back in action at home on Friday, September 11th against Vermillion.

West Central Cross Country Season Starts in Beresford

The West Central Trojan girls and boys cross country teams got their season underway on Friday, August 28th.  The Trojans traveled to Beresford for the Beresford Cross Country Invitational.

The girls team finished seventh overall with a total of 162 points.  Sioux Falls Lincoln was first with 10 points, followed by Sioux Falls Christian with 38 points and Beresford with 72 points.

Trojans Earn First Volleyball Win of 2020 Season

The West Central Trojans recorded their first win of the 2020 volleyball season in their second home match.  West Central hosted the Dell Rapids Quarriers on Thursday, August 27th and won in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 25-13.

The Trojans took control of the first set and held it most of the way.  Dell Rapids did make a couple of runs, but to no avail as West Central took the first set.  The Quarriers did lead most of the second set, but the Trojans made a late run to take a two-point victory in the second set.  That late run proved to be the momentum the Trojans needed in the third set as they got out to a big lead early and never trailed as the won the set and the match.

Head coach Kelsi Buckmiller said, “It was great to see the girls come together and bring everything they’ve been working so hard for out on the court!”

Cassidy Siemonsma finished the night with 10 kills.  Rachel Bucher and McKenna Sichmeller both had seven kills each.  Sichmeller also had three ace serves and four blocks.  Taylor Kunzweiler ended with nine digs.  Brooke Opitz had a team-high 15 set assists.

West Central (1-1) will travel to Tea on Tuesday, September 1st.

Dell Rapids St Mary Cross Country Team Starts 2020 Season

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal cross country team got their season started on Saturday, August 29th at the Don Ray Invitational at Deubrook.  Twelve teams participated in the cross country invite.

The Cardinal boys team placed third as a team.  Baltic placed first as a team, while Clark/Willow Lake was second.  Senior runner Jacob Vogel placed second individually.

Dell Rapids Softball Splits in Season Opener

The Dell Rapids High School Softball team split their two games to start the 2020 fall season on Sunday, August 30th.  Dell Rapids played Lennox and Tea to start the season.

In the first game against Lennox, Dell Rapids won a slugfest 16-12.  Each team scored a run in the first inning, but Dell Rapids scored six times in the top of the second, and then five more in the top of the third for a 12-1 lead.  Lennox added four runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 12-5.  Dell Rapids scored four more times in the fourth inning to lead 16-5.  Lennox pushed across seven runs in the bottom of the inning before Dell Rapids got the final out to end the game.

Nine different players had hits for Dell Rapids.  Lexi Ingalls had four hits and an RBI.  Cora Alderson had three hits and an RBI.  Kylie Lebahn had three hits and three RBIs.  Haileigh Barnhart and Kyra Wajer both had two hits and three RBIs.  Abigail Greenhoff and Rileigh Foster both had two hits and two RBIs.  Kenzie Garry and Kylie Bittner each had a hit as well.  Bittner pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up five runs, four earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts.  Wajer pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up seven runs, three earned, on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

In the second game of the day, Tea scored three times in the last inning to steal a 10-9 victory from Dell Rapids.  Dell Rapids scored the first three runs in the first two innings, but Tea tied the game in the bottom of the second inning at 3-3.  Tea added two more runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 5-3.  Dell Rapids then responded with a run in the fourth and four more in the sixth to take an 8-5 lead.  Tea pulled within a run in the bottom of the sixth with two runs to make the score 8-7.  Dell Rapids added a run in the seventh, but Tea scored three times to take the win.

Ingalls collected three hits in the game and drove home four runs.  Foster had two hits and three RBIs.  Alderson had two hits and an RBI.  Barnhart collected two hits.  Greenhoff, Garry, Bittner, and Lebahn all had a hit as well.  Bittner pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up five runs, four earned, on seven hits.  Wajer pitched three innings giving up five runs, two earned, on seven hits.

Dell Rapids will play host on Sunday, September 13th when Baltic and Edgerton come to town.  First game will start at 12:30 p.m.

St Mary Volleyball Cruises in Home Win

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team had little issue with the Great Plains Lutheran Panthers on Saturday, August 29th.  The Cardinals, playing in their first of six straight home matches, won in straight sets by scores of 25-13, 25-15, 25-19.

With the first set tied 2-2, the Cardinals went on an 8-2 run and didn’t slow down from there.  They pushed the lead to 17-7 and took the first set with ease.  St Mary jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the second set.  The Panthers pulled within two points at 11-9.  Great Plains Lutheran continued to be within three-to-four points, but with the Cardinals leading 18-15, St Mary scored the final seven points for the win.  St Mary again got out to a lead midway through the third set at 13-8, but the Panthers fought back to tie the set at 16-16.  The Cardinals then closed out the set and match on a 9-3 run to earn the victory.

St Mary (2-0) will host the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders on Tuesday, September 1st.

Quarrier Football Team Wins Season Opener

The 2020 football season started with a win for the Dell Rapids Quarriers.  Following an undefeated 2019 regular season, Dell Rapids opened this year with a 27-18 win over the Lennox Orioles at home on Friday, August 28th.

Austin Henry got the Quarriers on the board with a 22-yard touchdown run as the clock hit zero on the first quarter.  Aiden Boechler made the extra point.  Colin Rentz connected with Landon Ruesink on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 8:27 to play in the second quarter for a 13-0 lead.  Coby Maeschen added another touchdown for the Quarriers on a one-yard run with 3:22 to play in the half.  Ruesink added the two-point conversion to push the lead to 21-0.  Lennox got their first score with 2:16 to play in the half to cut the lead to 21-6 by halftime.

The next score came with 7:11 to play in the game.  Lennox scored on a three-yard run.  Dell Rapids stopped a two-point conversion to keep a two score lead at 21-12.  Maeschen scored his second touchdown of the game with :53 to go securing the win for Dell Rapids.  Lennox did get a score as time expired.

Rentz finished the game 1-2 passing for 24 yards and a touchdown.  Henry was 2-9 passing for 14 yards.  Ruesink had two catches for 29 yards and a touchdown.  Ruesink also led the team in rushing with 15 carries for 82 yards.  Brayden Gee had 13 carries for 28 yards.  Maeschen had 14 carries for 45 yards and two touchdowns.

Maeschen and Landon VonHoltum both had eight tackles.  Cody Schultz and Brayden Pankonen had seven tackles each.  Gee finished the night with five tackles.  Henry had two interceptions, and Maeschen also had an interception.

Dell Rapids (1-0) will travel to Flandreau on Friday, September 4th.
