Trojan Girls Soccer Team Suffers First Defeat

The West Central Trojan girls soccer team has suffered their first loss of the season.  The Trojans were undefeated in nine matches to start the season, but Garretson/Dell Rapids handed West Central their first loss on Tuesday, September 8th in Garretson.

West Central started the past week of matches on Tuesday, September 1st at Dakota Valley.  The Trojans earned a draw against the Panthers at 0-0.  West Central then hosted Vermillion on Thursday, September 3rd.  Again, the Trojans earned a 0-0 draw against the Tanagers.

The Garretson/Dell Rapids Blue Dragons did something on September 8th that no other team has been able to do all year.  The Blue Dragons scored two goals against the Trojans.  The two goals scored in the match were the first two goals allowed by West Central all season long.

The Trojans look to rebound with two straight home matches.  They will host Groton Area on Friday, September 11th, and then host Dakota Valley on Tuesday, September 15th.  West Central (5-1-3) still sits atop of the Class A standings.  The Trojans have only four matches remaining in the regular season.

West Central Volleyball Notches Second Dak-12 Win

The West Central Trojans earned their second match win of the season and second win in the conference on Tuesday, September 8th.  The Trojans defeated the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies in four sets by scores of 25-19, 25-19, 16-25, and 25-12.  This was the first road win for West Central on the season.

Cassidy Siemonsma was a force at the net on both the offensive and defensive side for the Trojans.  Siemonsma had seven kills and six blocks.  Grace Harden also had seven kills.  Taylor Kunzweiler finished with 20 digs and five ace serves.  Brooke Opitz had 22 set assists in the match.

West Central now moves to 2-3 on the season.  The Trojans travel to Sioux Falls to play the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Thursday, September 10th.

Madison Takes Straight-Set Match over Trojans

The Madison Bulldogs took a Dak-12 conference match against the West Central Trojans on Thursday, September 3rd.  Madison won in straight sets by scores of 25-22, 25-13, and 25-17.

Grace Harden led the Trojans with six kills in the match.  Hanna Lee had 10 set assists.  Taylor Kunzweiler and Jenna Lueth both had six digs.  Cassidy Siemonsma had two blocks.  Lueth also had an ace serve.

West Central (1-3) will travel to Elk Point to play the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Tuesday, September 8th.  They will then travel to Sioux Falls to play the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Thursday, September 10th.

Quarrier Competitive Cheer Wins Dakota Valley Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarrier competitive cheer team won the Dakota Valley Cheer Invitational on Saturday, September 5th.  Six total teams competed in the event.  The other teams were Winner, Dakota Valley, Wagner, Parkston, and Bon Homme.

Dell Rapids placed first with a score of 213.50 points.  Dakota Valley was second with 191.00 points.  Parkston placed third, followed by Bon Homme, Wagner, and Winner.

The Quarriers will host the Dell Rapisd Invite on Tuesday, September 8th.  The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals will also perform at the event.  The competition can be seen on Big Sioux Media starting at 6:30 p.m.

Quarriers Rock Solid in Flandreau

The second ranked Dell Rapids Quarriers had no trouble in their first road game of the season.  Dell Rapids were impressive on both sides of the ball in a 41-16 win over the Flandreau Fliers on Friday, September 4th in Flandreau.

The Quarriers scored on every offensive possession in the first half, which began with a 15-yard touchdown run by Landon Ruesink with 7:56 to go in the first quarter.  Ruesink scored again on a 23-yard run with 3:20 to play in the quarter for a 14-0 lead after the first.

Brayden Gee got a five-yard touchdown run with 10:13 remaining in the second quarter.  Colin Rentz followed that with an interception returned for a touchdown with 8:53 to play in the half.  Landon VonHoltum had a one-yard touchdown run with 4:24 to go in the second quarter.  Dell Rapids scored their final touchdown of the half in about thirty seconds.  Austin Henry threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Coby Maeschen with :26 to go for a 41-0 halftime lead.

Flandreau scored a touchdown in each of the final two quarters.  Tash Lunday had a 15-yard touchdown with 4:46 to play in the third quarter.  Lane Johanson had a one-yard touchdown run with 9:18 left in the game.

Dell Rapids finished with 261 yards of total offense, 74 passing yards and 187 passing yards.  The defense allowed 161 yards of total offense to Flandreau.  Dell Rapids also had four takeaways, three fumble recoveries and an interception.

Henry finished 4-7 passing for 74 yards and a touchdown.  Maeschen had one catch for 40 yards and a touchdown.  Ruesink had two catches for 26 yards.  Ruesink also finished with six carries for 90 yards and two touchdowns.  Gee had six carries for 42 yards and a touchdown.  Maeschen had four carries for 33 yards.

Maeschen led the team with eight tackles.  VonHoltum and Will Jaton both had five tackles.  Ian Mason and Cody Schultz both had four tackles.  Jaton, Chase Jones, and Henry all had fumble recoveries.

Dell Rapids (2-0) will travel to Madison to play the Bulldogs on Friday, September 11th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

De Smet Stuns Cardinals

In a battle of top five teams, the De Smet Bulldogs stunned the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Friday, September 4th at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.  The Bulldogs were firing on all cylinders and went home with a 54-0 win over the Cardinals.  The game ended in the middle of the third quarter.

De Smet scored 22 first quarter points.  They added 26 more in the second quarter for a 48-0 halftime lead.  The game-ending score came with 4:31 to play in the third quarter.

The Bulldog defense stifled the Cardinals.  St Mary only gained 37 yards of total offense, all rushing yards.  De Smet had a total of 327 yards, 245 rushing yards and 82 passing yards.

Samuel Lack led the team with six tackles.  Ty Brown finished with four tackles.  Noah Olund and Sam Palmer both recorded 3.5 tackles.

Prior to the game, the St Mary seniors were recognized.  This year’s seniors are Noah Dennis, Max Herber, Austin Greene-Lebrun, Jon Bares, Ashaun Roach-Valandra, Hunter Griffin, Samuel Lack, Nick Wolles, Sam Palmer, and Connor Libis.

St Mary (1-2) will host Alcester-Hudson on Friday, September 11th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Build Dakota Scholarship Winners Recognized, One Local Student Awarded

Students that received the Build Dakota Scholarship for the 2020-2021 school year were recently congratulated by Governor Kristi Noem.  There were a total of 313 students who were awarded the Build Dakota Scholarship across the state.

The city of Dell Rapids had one student who was awarded the scholarship.  Logan Wolles was given the scholarship as he is participating in the Building Trades Technology program at Lake Area Technical College in Watertown.

Build Dakota aims to support students entering high-need workforce programs at South Dakota’s technical colleges to fill the state’s technical career fields with skilled professionals. The scholarships cover tuition and fees, books, equipment, and other related program expenses for eligible programs within nine high-need industry areas at South Dakota’s four technical colleges. Recipients were selected by technical colleges from a total of 1,189 applications.

In-state and out-of-state students of all ages are eligible to apply. Scholarship applicants must be accepted into their approved program of interest. Recipients of the scholarship must enroll full-time, complete their educational program on schedule, and commit to stay in South Dakota to work in their field of study for three years following graduation.

Mustang Volleyball Earns First Win of Season

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team picked up their first win of the 2020 season in a home match over the Lennox Orioles on Thursday, September 3rd.

The Mustangs won the match in four sets by scores of 25-19, 15-25, 25-19, and 25-21.

Abbie Weinacht had seven kills in the match.  Tabor Teel, Kaitlyn Mohnen, and Blayne Gacke all had five kills each.  Gacke also had 12 digs.  Mohnen finished with seven digs.  Jessica Masgai had five total blocks, while Weinacht had two.  Grace Schildhauer finished with 15 set assists, and Brookelyn Stieben had 12 set assists.

The Mustangs (1-2) will travel to Vermillion on Thursday, September 10th in another Dak-12 match-up.

Quarriers Unable to Stop Sioux Falls Christian

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team was looking for their first win of the season when they hosted #1 Sioux Falls Christian on Thursday, September 3rd.  The Chargers remained undefeated after a straight set win of 25-15, 25-6, 25-13, leaving the Quarriers still looking for their first win.

The Quarriers were within a point in the opening set at 8-7, but Sioux Falls Christian went on an 8-1 run before eventually winning the first set 25-15.  Dell Rapids was within two points early in the second set at 6-4, but the Chargers went on a big 19-2 run to end the second set 25-6.  Sioux Falls Christian got out to a 10-3 lead in the third set and cruised from there for the match win.

Emma Van Regenmorter had five kills.  Sam Price, Kylee Fiddelke, and Kenzie Garry all had two kills each.  Sophi Randall finished with nine set assists.  Van Regenmorter also led the team with three blocks.  Price tallied 11 digs, while Randall and Emma Molskness both had six digs apiece.

The seniors were also recognized prior to the match.  This year’s seniors are Sam Price, Mackenzie Apland, Maddie Kringen, and Olivia Prasek.

Dell Rapids (0-3) will host Tea on Thursday, September 10th.

Four in Row for Cardinal Volleyball

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team won their fourth straight match to start the season.  The latest win came against the Mitchell Christian Golden Eagles on Thursday, September 3rd at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

The Cardinals won the match in straight sets by scores of 25-16, 26-24, and 25-9.

The first two sets of the match were close, back-and-forth games.  In the opening set, both teams made runs.  After a 7-7 tie score, the Cardinals scored the next four points to take an 11-7 lead.  Mitchell Christian responded by scoring the next five for a 12-11 advantage.  St Mary then took control of the first set with an 11-2 run to lead 22-13.  They went on to take the first set 25-16.  The second set was never more than a three-point difference.  St Mary’s largest lead was three points at 16-13.  The Golden Eagles led by as many as two points at 22-20.  The Cardinals ended the set on a 6-2 run to win 26-24 for the two set advantage.  St Mary took the momentum from the first two sets and went on a big run midway through the third set to get the match win.

Ella Heinitz finished the night with 10 kills, nine digs, seven set assists, and two ace serves.  Courtney Brown had eight kills and 13 digs.  Ella Griffin finished with 15 set assists, six kills, four digs, two blocks, and two ace serves.  Maya Heinitz finished with 10 digs and three kills.  Macie Brown had seven digs and two ace serves.  Lauren Rasmussen had four digs and two kills, and Teri Schoeberl had three digs.

The seniors were also recognized prior to the match.  The seniors are Ella Heinitz, Macie Brown, Lauren Rasmussen, and Teri Schoeberl.

St Mary (4-0) will host Canistota on Thursday, September 10th.
