The West Central Trojan softball team split two games in an early tournament hosted by Beresford at the American State Bank Sports Complex in Sioux Center, IA on Saturday, March 28th. The Trojans suffered a tough loss to Madison but bounced back with a big win over Deuel.
Madison 17, West Central 15
The Trojans took an early lead, but Madison found a way to tie the game and earn a win in extra innings. West Central took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. Madison tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the second. The tie didn’t last long as the Trojans scored three times in the bottom of the inning to go back in front 5-2. The Bulldogs got another run in the top of the third, but the Trojans had a big five-run inning of their own to make the score 10-3. Madison put three runs on the board in the top of the fourth to cut the lead in half, 10-5. The Trojans responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 12-5.
The Bulldogs then went on a run. They scored three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead down to 12-9. Madison then took the lead for the first time, 14-12, with a five-run top of the seventh. An RBI triple by Ayla Kramer and an RBI sacrifice fly by Maddy Kunzweiler in the bottom of the seventh tied the game 14-14 and sent the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, Madison would score three times for a 17-14 lead. West Central was only able to score one time in the bottom of the inning.
M. Kunzweiler had three hits, one a double, and seven RBIs. Kramer also had three hits, including a triple, with three RBIs. Addy Kunzweiler had two singles and a triple with an RBI. Sophie Rolfson added two doubles with an RBI. Paiten Schuldt had a double and an RBI. Teagan Lupkes and Stella Siemonsma each had a single with an RBI. Briauna Hoff pitched seven innings and allowed 15 runs, 14 earned, on 15 hits and six walks with four strikeouts. Emery Hartman pitched one inning and allowed two runs, neither earned, on a hit and walk with a strikeout.
West Central 15, Deuel 0
The Trojans made quick work of the Cardinals as the game ended on the 15-run rule in three innings. West Central had an eight-run bottom of the first inning. They added six more in the bottom of the second to led 14-0. They ended the game with one more run in the bottom of the third.
Hartman pitched all three innings without allowing a hit and had two walks with five strikeouts. A. Kunzweiler had two home runs and a triple with seven RBIs. Lupkes had two singles and an RBI. Siemonsma and Schuldt each had a single and two RBIs. Miley Travis had a hit and an RBI. Rolfson and M. Kunzweiler both finished with a single each.
