The West Central Trojan softball team won two of their three games at the Watchdog Classic in Beresford on Saturday, May 9th. The Trojans had wins over Florence/Henry and Sioux Falls Christian but fell to Beresford.
West Central 4, Florence/Henry 2
A seventh-inning run sealed the win for the Trojans against the Falcons. Each team posted a run in the second inning. Ayla Kramer had a solo home run to put the Trojans ahead 2-1. Each team again scored a run in the fifth, and West Central led 3-2 after five innings. Miley Travis had an RBI triple in the top of the seventh for the insurance run.
Travis had three hits, a single, double, and triple, with two RBIs. Kramer added three hits, one a home run, and an RBI. Sophie Rolfson had two hits, one a triple. Addy Kunzweiler also had a hit. Emery Hartman pitched seven innings and allowed two unearned runs on four hits and six walks with seven strikeouts.
Beresford 14, West Central 4
The Watchdogs took an early lead and ended the game with a big sixth inning for the 14-4 win. Beresford scored a run in the bottom of the first and four more in the bottom of the second for a 5-0 lead. The Trojans picked up two runs in the top of the third, but Beresford scored two runs in bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth for a 9-2 lead. West Central had two more runs in the top of the sixth. The Watchdogs then scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game on the 10-run rule.
Kramer had two hits, one a triple, and an RBI. Stella Siemonsma had two hits, one a double. Maddy Kunzweiler also had two hits. A. Kunzweiler had a single and two RBIs. Teagan Lupkes added a hit and an RBI. Rolfson, Emma Voeltz, and Izzy McKinney all had one hit each. Hartman pitched one inning and allowed five runs, one earned, on two hits and four walks with a strikeout. Linzie Hoff tossed 4 2/3 innings and allowed nine runs, five earned, on 11 hits and a walk with strikeouts.
West Central 6, Sioux Falls Christian 3
The Trojans bounced back with a come-from-behind win over the Chargers. A. Kunzweiler had a two-run double in the top of the second for a 2-0 lead. Sioux Falls Christian would grab the lead, 3-2, with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Trojans would put together a two-out rally in the top of the seventh. Kramer had a two-run RBI double to make the score 4-3. Siemonsma and Voeltz each had an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-3.
Kramer and A. Kunzweiler each had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Lupkes had a single and a double. Siemonsma and Voeltz each had a single and an RBI. Rolfson and Hartman both had one hit each. Hartman pitched seven innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
