Cardinal Girls Also Defeat Raiders

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team defeated the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders 58-48 on Friday, February 14th, in Dell Rapids.  The Raiders held a two point lead at the end of a back-and-forth first quarter at 14-12.  The Cardinals came back in the second quarter and outscored the Raiders to take a 27-24 halftime lead.  Dell Rapids St Mary extended their lead to 41-34 after the third quarter.  Oldham-Ramona/Rutland pulled within one point late in the fourth quarter at 48-47 with 1:30 to go, but the Cardinals ended the game with a 10-1 run by knocking down their free-throws for the win.

Kelly Michel led the Cardinals with 21 points in the game.  Ally Mullaney added 13 points, and Anna Wolles finished the game with eight points while going 6-7 from the free throw line.  Joie Spier had 16 points for the Raiders, 11 of those in the second half.  Marissa Hallen-Malisch tossed in eight points.

The Cardinals improve to 12-7 on the year.  Dell Rapids St Mary will end their regular season on Tuesday, February 18th.  The Cardinals will host Estelline in their final home game of the year.

St Mary Earns 2nd Win in a Row

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals girls basketball team picked up their second win in a row, and their 11th overall, with a 50-33 win over the Colman-Egan Hawks on Friday, February 7th.  The first quarter was back and forth as neither team got ahead by more than three points.  The first quarter ended with an 11-11 tie.  But from that point forward, the St Mary Cardinals took control of the game.  The Cardinals outscored the Hawks 12-2 in the second quarter to take a 23-13 lead into halftime.  St Mary extended the lead to 34-21 after the third quarter, and put the game away from the free throw line in the fourth quarter for the win.

Kelly Michel finished the game with 13 points.  Ally Mullaney tossed in 10 points, Anna Wolles added nine points, and Amber Hansen had seven points.  Colman/Egan was led by Tori Nelsen with 22 points.

The Cardinals improve to 11-6 on the year.  They will travel to Canistota on Monday, February 10th.

Cardinals Big 4th Quarter Earns Win

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team used a big fourth quarter to earn a 61-48 win over the Elkton/Lake Benton Elks on Friday, January 31st, in Lake Benton, MN.  The first quarter was back and forth as St Mary took a slight two-point lead at 13-11 after the first quarter.  The first few minutes of the second quarter were also back and forth.  With 5:30 to go in the half, St Mary held a 19-18 lead.  Over the next three minutes, the Cardinals went on an 11-3 run to take a 30-21 lead with 2:20 left in the quarter.  However, the Elks finished the half on an 8-0 run to pull within a point at 30-29 at halftime.

The Elks continued the run into the third quarter, scoring the first five points to go ahead 34-30 with 6:00 to go in the third quarter.  Elkton/Lake Benton maintained that lead throughout the quarter.  The Elks led 41-36 with 2:20 to go in the third, but the Cardinals scored the final four points to pull within a point at 41-40 at at the end of the third quarter.   Again the game went back and forth in the first half of the fourth quarter.  St Mary led 44-41 after scoring the first four points of the fourth quarter.  The Elks tied the game at 45-45 with 4:36 left in the game, and then took a one-point lead a few seconds later on a free throw at 46-45 with 4:30 to go.  From that point the Cardinals outscored the Elks 16-2 for the win.

Ally Mullaney led St Mary with 21 points.  Kelly Michel added 15 points, and Amber Hansen had 11 points.

The Cardinals improve to 9-5 on the year.  St Mary will play Viborg/Hurley at the Tri-Valley Classic in Alcester on Saturday, February 1st.

Baltic Holds Off St Mary

The Baltic Bulldogs picked up a win in Dell Rapids against the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals girls basketball team on Monday, January 27th, by a score of 44-40.  Baltic had a slight two-point lead after the first quarter at 9-7.  St Mary scored the first three points of the second quarter, but Baltic then went on a 7-0 lead to go ahead 16-10.  The Cardinals pulled to within two points at 16-14, but Baltic used another little run of 8-2 to take a 24-16 halftime lead.  The Bulldogs were able to push their lead to 10 points after the third quarter at 34-24.  The Bulldogs built a 13-point lead late into the fourth quarter, but time ran out on St Mary as the Cardinals were only able to make up nine of the 13 points in the remaining minutes of the game.

This was the second straight loss for St Mary after reeling off six wins in a row.  The Cardinals drop to 8-5 on the year.  St Mary will travel to Lake Benton on Friday, January 31st, to take on Elkton-Lake Benton in a game that will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Teams Have Great Showing at DVC Tournament

DRSM LogoBoth the Dell Rapids St Mary boys and girls teams played well during the Dakota Valley Conference tournament held January 21st-25th.  The boys team finished as the consolation champions in their tournament, and the girls team finished second in their tournament.

The boys opened up the tournament with a 70-26 loss to Elkton-Lake Benton.  The Cardinals bounced back and picked up wins in their next two games.  They defeated Colman-Egan 63-57 on Thursday, January 23rd, and then beat Estelline 44-40 on Saturday, January 25th.

The girls team opened up their tournament with a win over Oldham-Ramona-Rutland 63-42 on Tuesday, January 21st.  The Cardinals then picked up a big win over previously undefeated and Class A #4 Deubrook 54-46.  Estelline ended the tournament for Dell Rapids St Mary by beating the Cardinals 34-47.

Cardinals Win Thriller in Chester

DRSMvsChester_GBB_1_12-30-13The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals girls basketball team pulled out an overtime win over the Chester Flyers 51-48 on Monday, December 30th, in Chester.  The Cardinals jumped out to an early seven point lead in the first quarter and led 13-7 after the first break.  However, Chester held St Mary to just four points in the second quarter and took the lead at halftime at 19-17.  The Flyers extended their lead to nine points in the third quarter before St Mary scored the last four points to pull within five at 32-27 at the end of the third quarter.

Then in the fourth quarter, the game really got exciting.  St Mary was with three points at 32-29 with 7:22 left in the game after a Kelly Michel basket.  Neither team scored for nearly two minutes before Chester scored the next five points to take a 37-29 lead with 4:01 to go.  Each team traded points, and the Flyers again had an eight-point lead with 3:30 left in the game at 39-31.  Amber Hansen knocked down a put-back layup with 1:24 left in the game.  After a missed free-throw, Michel hit a three-point shot with :34 left.  Chester’s Logan Miller was fouled with 12.2 second remaining.  She hit the first free-throw, but missed the second, giving the St Mary Cardinals one last chance.  With :00.2 seconds on the clock, Hansen made a shot from the left block and was fouled as time expired.  Her free throw was no good, but the game went into overtime tied at 40-40.

In the overtime session, the two teams were again tied at 42-42 with 2:46 as Hansen stepped to the free-throw line with two shots.  She made both free-throws, and then at the 2:05 mark, Hansen had another rebound and put-back to give the Cardinals a four point lead.  The Flyers tied the game again at 46-46, but Kaitlyn Vortherms hit a shot from the right elbow with :51 left in overtime.  Hansen would again make two more free-throws with 11.4 seconds left to give St Mary a three-point lead and the win.

Hansen led St Mary with 17 points, including the game-tying basket at the buzzer, and six points in overtime.  Michel added 15 points, and Anna Wolles had eight points in the game.  Chester was led by Elena Borah with a game-high 19 points.

Dell Rapids St Mary improves to 3-3 on the year.  The Cardinals will host Marion on Friday, December 3rd.

Castlewood Turns Back St Mary

DRSM LogoThe Castlewood Warriors defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals 73-39 at the girls Entringer Classic in Flandreau on Saturday, December 21st.  The Warriors outscored the Cardinals 46-14 combined in the 2nd and 3rd quarters on their way to the win.  Castlewood lead 13-7 after the first quarter and 41-17 at halftime.  Castlewood extended the lead to 59-21 after the 3rd quarter.

St Mary shot just 9-54 (17%) from the field, and 2-16 (13%) from three-point area.  The Cardinals were 19-28 (68%) from the free-throw line.  St Mary pulled down 33 total rebounds, had seven steals, and turned the ball over 11 times.

Lindsey Wolles had 10 points and three rebounds in the game.  Ally Mullaney added eight points and five rebounds.  Kelly Michel added six points and four rebounds.  Sierra Johnson had a game-high 20 points along with eight rebounds and five assists to lead the Warriors.

The Cardinals fall to 2-3 on the year.  St Mary will travel to Chester to take on the Flyers on Monday, December 30th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinals Victorious in Home Opener

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals girls basketball team picked up a season-opening home win against the Garretson Blue Dragons by a score of 49-46 on Tuesday, December 10th.  The Cardinals lead 19-11 after the first quarter, but were only able to score six points in the second quarter, which allowed Garretson to tie the game at 25-25 at halftime.  St Mary held a one point lead after the third quarter at 36-35.

Kelly Michel led the team with 18 points. Lindsey Wolles had 15 points. Amber Hansen and Anna Wolles each had five points in the game, while Ally Mullaney added four and Sara Ginsbach had two points.

The Cardinals will travel to DeSmet to take on the Bulldogs on Thursday, December 12th.

Dell Rapids St Mary Girls Lose Exciting District 4B Game

The Chester Flyers defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in an exciting second-round District 4B girls basketball game on Thursday, February 21st, in Chester.  The Flyers jumped out to a lead in the first quarter by not allowing a field goal to the Cardinals in the quarter.  All the points for Dell Rapids St Mary came on free throws, as Chester led 11-5 after the first quarter.  The Cardinals found their offense in the second quarter and played strong defense as well, holding Chester to just three points and taking a halftime lead of 19-14.  Chester would have the offensive burst in the third quarter, regaining the lead after the third, 31-25.  The Flyers would extend that lead to 37-27 with 5:15 to go in the game.  The Cardinals would not go away quietly, as they cut the lead in half to 37-32 with 4:19 to play.  Chester would be held scoreless over the next two minutes as the Cardinals cut the Flyer lead down to 37-36 with 2:05 to go.  Dell Rapids St Mary was not able to get any closer, only coming within two points at 40-38 with 1:21 in the game.  The Chester Flyers would knock down big free throws to hang on for the win.

Dell Rapids St Mary was led by Kelly Michel with a game-high 17 points.  Anna Wolles added 11 points, and Amber Hansen finished with five points.  Chester was led by Erin Benson with 16 points.  Sara Heyn had 13 points, and Rachel Reiff had seven points.

The Cardinals season comes to an end with a record of 10-11.  Chester moves on to the District 4B Championship game against Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Saturday, February 23rd, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings.

St Mary Girls Win 5th in a Row

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team picked up their fifth win in a row defeating the Canistota Hawks 62-36 on Monday, February 4th, in Dell Rapids on Senior Night.  The Hawks had a brief 2-0 lead after scoring a layup off the opening tip, but it was all Dell Rapids St Mary after that point.  The Cardinals scored the next eight points to lead 8-2.  Canistota would get as close as 12-10 before the Cardinals ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 18-10.  The Cardinals extended the lead early in the second quarter, but Canistota again would climb back into the game, cutting the deficit to 28-22 with 2:04 left in the second quarter.  Again Dell Rapids St Mary would end the quarter on a run, this time a 7-1 run to take a 35-23 lead into halftime.  The Cardinal defense shut down the Hawks the rest of the game, giving up just five points in the third quarter to extend their lead to 51-28 and only allowing eight more points in the fourth quarter for the win.

Kelly Michel led the Cardinals with 24 points on the night.  Mikayla Brown and Amber Hansen each had seven points.  Ally Mullaney, Lexie LeBrun, and Anna Wolles all had six points apiece in the game.  Dell Rapids St Mary shot 5-9 from the free throw line as a team.  Canistota was led by Chloe Nielsen with 16 points.

The Cardinals improve to 10-8 on the year and will travel to Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Friday, February 8th.
