SF Christian Sinks Quarrier Boys

DRvsSFC_BBB_1-9-18The #2 ranked Sioux Falls Christian Chargers shot the ball well against the Dell Rapids Quarriers and won 77-40 on Tuesday, January 9th at Dell Rapids High School.

Dell Rapids had an early 8-3 lead with 6:00 to go in the first quarter, but the Chargers went on a 12-2 run the remainder of the quarter for a 15-10 lead.  They continued to cruise from there.  Sioux Falls Christian scored 24 second-quarter points and led 39-21 at halftime.  The Charger defense held Dell Rapids to just five third-quarter points, and they outscored the Quarriers 38-19 in the second half for the win.

Carson Rentz had 13 points and seven rebounds in the game.  Elijah Story had nine points.  Mason Schmidt finished with eight points, and Jeffrey Schuch finished with five points and seven rebounds.  The Chargers were led by Will Garnaas with 18 points.

Dell Rapids (4-3) will travel to Redfield for the Pheasant Shootout on Saturday, January 13th.  The Quarriers will play Groton Area at 6:00 p.m.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

New School Record Set in Quarrier Boys Win at Chamberlain

NewDRLogoA new school record was set in a Dell Rapids win at Chamberlain on Friday, January 5th.  Carson Rentz set a new school record for three-point shots made in a game with eight in a 90-44 win over the Chamberlain Cubs.

Dell Rapids carried their offensive momentum in the second half of Thursday night’s game against Beresford into the game against Chamberlain.  The Quarriers scored 33 first quarter points and led 33-10 after the first quarter.  Their lead grew to 56-17 at halftime.  Dell Rapids then outscored Chamberlain 34-27 in the second half as they cruised to victory.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 61% from the field, 52% from behind the three-point line, and 67% from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids had 32 team rebounds, 22 team assists, and eight team steals.

Rentz finished with 24 points, all on made three-point shots, and also had four assists and four steals.  Mason Schmidt added 23 points along with four rebounds.  Jeffrey Schuch had 17 points on a perfect 7-7 from the field and 3-3 from the free-throw line, six rebounds, and six assists.  Elijah Story and Drew Van Regenmorter both finished with eight points each.

Dell Rapids (4-2) will host the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Tuesday, January 9th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Boys Bounce Back Against Beresford

DRvsBHS_BBB_1-4-18After a cold-shooting first half, the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys team rebounded in the second half for a 55-26 win over the Beresford Watchdogs on Thursday, January 4th at Dell Rapids High School.

Neither team could get the ball to fall through the hoop in the first half.  The two teams combined for just 32 total points through the first two quarters of play.  In fact the two teams combined for just 10 total points in the first quarter.  Dell Rapids held an 8-2 lead after the first quarter.  Both teams scored 11 points each in the second quarter, and the Quarriers took a 19-13 lead into halftime.

The Quarriers were able to get their offense going in the second half.  Dell Rapids outscored Beresford 20-3 in the third quarter for a 39-16 lead.  The Quarriers continued to shoot the ball well in the fourth quarter and outscored the Watchdogs 16-10 in the final quarter for the win.

Despite the cold first half, the Quarriers finished the game shooting 36% from the field.  However, Dell Rapids only shot 13% from three-point area.  They were a perfect 9-9 from the free-throw line on the night.  Dell Rapids finished with a total of 44 team rebounds, nine team assists, nine steals, and only turned the ball over seven times in the game.

Mason Schmidt led the Quarriers with 21 points and four rebounds in the game.  Eddie Price provided a spark off the bench with nine points and seven rebounds.  Elijah Story and Logan Heim both finished with five points each.  Carson Rentz had a team-high nine rebounds and three assists.  Jeffrey Schuch added eight rebounds, three assists, and two blocked shots.

Dell Rapid (3-2) will travel to Chamberlain to play the Cubs on Friday, January 5th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media as a video only broadcast with no play-by-play.

Fourth Quarter Run Lifts Sioux Valley Over Quarrier Boys

NewDRLogoA 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter proved to be the difference for the Sioux Valley Cossacks.  Sioux Valley defeated the Dell Rapids Quarriers 60-53 at the Entringer Classic in Brookings on Saturday, December 30th.

The Cossacks held a 13-12 lead after a back-and-forth first quarter.  Sioux Valley extended that lead to 10 points at 29-19 with 1:30 to play in the second quarter.  Dell Rapids was able to cut the lead to 31-25 by halftime.  The Quarriers held the Cossacks to just nine third-quarter points, and Dell Rapids tied the game at 40-40 by the end of the third quarter.  Sioux Valley, however, went on a 10-0 run in the first 1:30 of the fourth quarter.  Dell Rapids was able to cut the lead to five points, but couldn’t get any closer as Sioux Valley took the win.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 35% from the field, 24% from three-point area, and 67% from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids had 33 team rebounds, 16 assists, and five blocks.

Two players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Mason Schmidt had 21 points and six rebounds.  Jeffrey Schuch finished with 15 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks.  Drew VanRegenmorter had five points, and Carson Rentz and Eddie Price both had four points each.

Dell Rapids (2-2) will host Beresford as part of a girls and boys double header.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Double Overtime Thriller Goes Way of Titans

DRvsTea_BBB_12-15-17Dell Rapids High School was the setting for a double overtime thriller on Friday, December 15th.  The #1 ranked Tea Area Titans came away with a 68-63 win over the #4 ranked Dell Rapids Quarriers.

Both offenses got off to a slow start as Dell Rapids led 10-6 after the first quarter of play.  As both teams settled into the game, the offenses found their stride.  Both teams combined for 30 points in the second quarter, and the Titans led 24-22 at halftime after a buzzer-beater.

The Titans pushed their lead to four points at 42-38 by the end of the third quarter.  The Quarriers went on a 7-2 run to take a 45-44 lead with just under 4:00 to play in the game.  Dell Rapids pushed the lead to 50-45 with 2:30 to go, and then lead 52-48 with 1:32 on the clock.  With just :20 to go in the game, Kaleb Joffer pulled down an offensive rebound and got his put-back shot to fall to tie the game at 52-52.

That’s when things got wild in Dell Rapids.  Carson Rentz dribbled to the Quarrier end of the floor and found a wide open Elijah Story in the left corner.  Story made the three-point shot to give Dell Rapids a 55-52 lead with :04 to go in the game.  After a timeout by Tea Area, Noah Freidel drove three-quarters of the court and hit a running three-point shot at the buzzer to tie the game at 55-55 to force overtime.

Both teams scored just two points each in the first half of the first overtime.  Tea Area scored to make it 59-57 with just under 2:00 to play.  Neither team would score over the next minute and a half, and the Quarriers had the ball with :26 to go in the game down by two points.  With :11 on the clock, Rentz hit a jumper just inside the three-point line to tie the game at 59-59.  Tea Area called a timeout with :06.5 to go.  After the timeout, Freidel appeared to hit the game-winning shot as time expired and the Tea Area fans erupted.  However, an official saw a timeout called by Coach Jason Fersdahl after the made basket prior to the final buzzer sounding and added :01.3 to the game clock.  Dell Rapids had to inbound the ball underneath the Titan basket.  Elijah Story made a baseball pass to the opposite end of the court.  The pass was tipped by Logan Heim to the middle of the Quarrier lane where Jeffrey Schuch laid it off the glass and in just prior to the buzzer sounding to tie the game at 61-61 to go to double overtime.

The Titans were able to make free throws down the stretch in the second overtime as three Quarrier starters fouled out of the game in the second overtime.  Tea Area took advantage of the foul trouble and outscored Dell Rapids 7-2 for the win.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 36% from the field, 31% from beyond the three-point line, and 74% from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had 51 team rebounds, 11 team assists, but turned the ball over 24 times.

Schuch finished the game with a double-double.  He had 13 points and 18 rebounds.  Story and Mason Schmidt both finished with 16 points each to lead the team.  Rentz had 15 points.  Heim added 11 rebounds in the game.

Dell Rapids (1-1) will travel to Baltic on Monday, December 18th for their next game.

Quarrier Boys Open Season with Road Win

DRvsWC_BBB_12-8-17After leading by 16 points late in the second quarter, the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team held tough for 55-49 win over the West Central Trojans in Hartford on Friday, December 8th.

The Quarriers led 11-9 after the first quarter and had held West Central to just one point through much of the second quarter to build a 26-10 lead.  The Trojans made two three-point baskets before halftime to cut the deficit to 26-16.  West Central then outscored Dell Rapids 17-8 in the third quarter to pull within a point at 34-33.  The Quarriers went on a 7-0 run in the first 1:15 of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 41-33.  It was a lead they would not lose the remainder of the game.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 18-37 (49%) from the field, but just 1-16 (6%) from beyond the three-point line.  They were 16-24 (67%) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers also had a total of 41 team rebounds, 10 team assists, and turned the ball over just eight times.

Carson Rentz had a team-high 14 points in the game along with five rebounds and three assists.  Mason Schmidt finished with 12 points and five rebounds.  Jeffrey Schuch added nine points, 12 rebounds, and four assists.  Logan Heim finished with 11 rebounds and two steals in the game.

Dell Rapids (1-0) will face another Dak XII opponent on Friday, December 15th, when they host the defending State A Champion Tea Area Titans as part of a double-header with the girls.

Carson Rentz Signs with DSU

CarsonRentzDSU2017Dell Rapids senior Carson Rentz signed his letter of intent to play basketball for the Dakota State University Trojans basketball team in Madison.  Rentz held his signing on Wednesday, November 15th, at Dell Rapids High School.

Rentz finished his junior season shooting 30% from the field, 27% from three-point area, and 75% from the free-throw line.  He was named the MVP at the DWU Classic and played for BBA this past summer.  In three seasons on the Quarrier basketball team, Rentz has a total of 184 points, 50 rebounds, 82 assists and 17 steals.  He has shot 34% from the field, 33% from three point area, and 78% from the free-throw line in his career.

Rentz was also the quarterback of the Quarrier football team this past season.

2016-2017 Post Season Basketball Awards

BasketballSeveral players from the Dell Rapids and Dell Rapids St Mary girls and boys basketball teams received post season awards for their play this season.

Jackie Wolles earned an Honorable Mention All-Conference for the Cardinals in the Dakota Valley Conference.  Connor Libis was a First Team All-Conference selection, and Luke Brown was also an Honorable Mention All-Conference player.

Jayda Knuppe and Emma Paul were Second Team All-Conference selections for the Dakota XII Conference.  Arial Hoffman was an Honorable Mention All-Conference.  Knuppe was also a State A All-Tourney selection.  Jeffrey Schuch and Sheldon Siemonsma were Second Team All-Conference selections, and Mason Peter was an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection.

Season Ends for Quarrier Boys Against Chargers

DRvsSFC_BBB_3-2-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers had their season come to an end in the Region 3A semi-finals on Thursday, March 2nd, against the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers at the Elmen Center.  The Chargers defeated the Quarriers 71-54.

Both teams started the game on little runs, and the first quarter ended with the scored tied at 13-13.  Sioux Falls Christian was able to make a run late in the second quarter and pulled away from Dell Rapids at 31-21 by halftime.  The Quarriers came out of halftime with energy and cut the lead to four points early in the third quarter.  The Chargers, however, quietly and methodically pulled away from Dell Rapids and led 49-36 by the end of the third quarter.  Sioux Falls Christian was almost automatic from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, and was 20-24 in the game.  The Chargers outscored Dell Rapids 22-18 in the final period for the win.

Dell Rapids was led by Jeffrey Schuch with 15 points.  Austin Ellingson added 11 points.  Tanner Heim finished the game with 11 points and five rebounds.  Sheldon Siemonsma also finished in double figures with 10 points.  Dell Rapids shot 39% (20-51) from the field and 63% (10-16) from the free-throw line.  Sioux Falls Christian was led by Mitchell Goodbary with 19 points, and Dejay Fykstra with 13 points.

Sioux Falls Christian will advance to the Sweet 16 and will play Sisseton on Tuesday, March 7th.

The Madison Bulldogs also advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 70-52 win over the Flandreau Fliers in the opening game of the night.  Madison was led by Aaron Fiegen with 29 points, and Riley Janke had 14 points.  Flandreau was led by Dalyn Bakkedahl with 21 points and Dylan LeBrun with 20 points.  Madison will play Hot Springs in the Sweet 16 round also on Tuesday, March 7th.

Defense Sends Quarrier Boys to Region 3A Semi’s

DRvsBaltic_BBB_2-28-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers held the Baltic Bulldogs to single digits in three of the four quarters on their way to a 65-32 win in the opening round of the Region 3A tournament in Dell Rapids on Tuesday, February 28th.

The Quarriers got out to an 18-10 lead by the end of the first quarter.  The first quarter was the only quarter Baltic would score double figures.  Dell Rapids would outscore the Bulldogs 22-8 in the second quarter for a 40-18 lead at halftime.  Baltic was only able to get eight points in the third quarter as well and trailed 59-26 heading into the fourth quarter. Both teams were held to just six points each in the final period.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 44% (27-62) from the field, 16% (4-25) from three-point area, and 78% (7-8) from the free-throw line.  They had a total of 46 rebounds in the game, 16 assists, 10 steals and only turned the ball over six times.

Four players finished in double figures led by Sheldon Siemonsma with 18 points, four assists, two steals, and two blocked shots.  Jeffrey Schuch had 14 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.  Mason Peter added 13 points along with eight rebounds and three assists.  Mason Schmidt finished with 11 points and six rebounds.  Logan Heim had a team high 12 rebounds in the game.

Dell Rapids (15-6) will face the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Thursday, March 2nd, at the Elmen Center.  Game time will be 8:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Sweet 16.  Madison will play Flandreau in the first game on Thursday starting at 6:30 p.m.   Both games will be broadcast on Big Sioux Media.
