The Dell Rapids PBR baseball team ended the regular season by splitting their final two games. They defeated the Canova Gang on Thursday, July 16th but lost to the Flandreau Blue Teal on Sunday, July 19th. PBR ended the regular season with a 14-4 record.
PBR 8, Canova 2
Dell Rapids broke a scoreless tie with a three-run top of the third inning for a 3-0 lead. They added another run in the top of the fifth to make the score 4-0. Canova got a run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 4-1. PBR put the game away with a four-run top of the eighth inning to extend the lead to 8-1. The Gang got one more run in the bottom of the ninth.
Jake Brandenburg had three hits, one of them a triple. Drew Sweeter also had three hits. Zach Puetz and Lincoln Fersdahl both had two singles and two RBIs. Riley Hoffman had a double and single with an RBI. Conner Spindler had a single with an RBI. Tad Tjaden and Trey Randel both had one hit. Brett Mogen pitched five innings and allowed two hits with six strikeouts. Sweeter pitched four innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with four strikeouts.
Flandreau Blue Teal 13, PBR 12
A run in the top of the ninth proved to be the winning run for Flandreau on Sunday. The Blue Teal started the game with two runs. PBR responded with three in the bottom of the first for a 3-2 lead. After a scoreless second inning, each team scored three times in the third, and PBR led 6-5. Flandreau picked up some momentum in the top of the fourth and scored six times to take an 11-6 lead. Dell Rapids got four of those runs back in the bottom of the inning to pull within a run, 11-10. Flandreau extended their lead to 12-10 with a run in the top of the seventh. Dell Rapids tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a solo home run from Drew Sweeter and an RBI double by Fersdahl. Flandreau, however, scored a run in the top of the ninth.
Tad Tjaden finished with three singles and five RBIs. D. Sweeter had three hits, two of them home runs, and three RBIs. Brandenburg had two doubles and a single with two RBIs. Fersdahl finished with a double and an RBI. Brayden Pankonen had a triple. Grant Sweeter added a double. Riley Calhoon had a single, and Beau Behrend had an RBI.
