The Dell Rapids Phils legion baseball team played three games at “The Rock” Tournament in Madison between Friday, June 26th and Saturday, June 27th. Dell Rapids finished 1-2 in those three games.
Volga 10, Dell Rapids 4
Volga scored in every inning but one to take the win over Dell Rapids on Friday. Each team scored two times in the opening inning. Volga then scored a run in the second and four more in the top of the third for a 7-2 lead. Dell Rapids closed the gap to 7-4 with two runs in the bottom of the third, but Volga added another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth for the win.
AJ Brandenburg and Connor Hanson each had two singles. Gauge Bunkers and Caiden Borns both had one single. Eli Gullickson pitched two innings and allowed seven runs, six earned, on five hits and two walks with a strikeout. Owen Bollock pitched three innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks with one strikeout.
Edgeley 3, Dell Rapids 2
Edgeley scored two times in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a 3-2 win over Dell Rapids also on Friday. Bunkers hit a home run to right field in the top of the first to give Dell Rapids a 1-0 lead. The score stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh. With one out Edgeley tied the game on a sacrifice fly to force extra innings. Kenny Swanson scored on an error in the top of the ninth to put Dell Rapids back in front 2-1. Edgeley, however, won the game on a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth.
Hanson had two hits, one being a double. Bunkers had a home run and an RBI. Swanson added a triple. AJ Brandenburg and Tommy LaVoy each had a single.
Dell Rapids 7, Excelsior 3
The Phils bounced back with a win in their only game on Saturday. Excelsior scored two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Dell Rapids would get a single run in the bottom of the second and then tied the game, 2-2, with another run in the bottom of the third. The Phils went ahead 5-2 with a three-run bottom of the fourth inning. Excelsior cut the lead to 5-3 with a run in the top of the fifth, but the Phils added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Ryan Brandenburg had three hits and two RBIs. AJ Brandenburg added a single and an RBI. Hanson and Jake Heinitz each had a hit. LaVoy finished with an RBI. R. Brandenburg pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed an earned run on two hits and a walk with a strikeout. LaVoy pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and five walks.
