The Dell Rapids Phils legion baseball team is hanging tough in the 2026 South Dakota State Sr Legion Baseball Tournament in Madison. After an opening-round loss, they have won two games to stay alive in the tournament.
Volga 3, Dell Rapids 1 – Fri, July 31st
Jake Heinitz hit an RBI double in the top of the second to put Dell Rapids in front 1-0. They held the lead until the bottom of the fourth. Volga would score three times in the inning for a 3-1 lead.
Heinitz had a double and an RBI. Kenny Swanson, Ryan Brandenburg, and Haiden Kaffar all had a hit. Gauge Bunkers pitched three innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Eli Gullickson also tossed three innings and allowed an earned run on a hit and two walks with one strikeout.
Dell Rapids 11, Garretson 9 – Sat, Aug 1st
After the two teams were tied 3-3 through two innings of play, Dell Rapids put seven runs on the board in the top of the third. They added another run in the top of the fourth to make the score 11-3. Garretson put together a rally scoring five times in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 11-8. They scored one more time in the bottom of the seventh, but Dell Rapids held on to win to continue playing in the tournament.
Tommy LaVoy had two hits with an RBI. Connor Hanson had a single and three RBIs. AJ Brandenburg and Swanson both had a hit and two RBIs each. Caiden Borns added a hit with an RBI. Bunkers and Heinitz both finished with a single, while R. Brandenburg had an RBI.
Dell Rapids 9, Parkston 7 – Sun, Aug 2nd
Dell Rapids took an early lead, but then also had to come-from-behind to stay in tournament play. They scored five times in the top of the first for an early 5-0 lead. Parkston got three runs back in the bottom of the first. Dell Rapids added another run in the top of the second. Parkston scored two more times to cut the lead to 6-5. Parkston would add two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-6 lead. Dell Rapids rallied for two runs in the top of the fifth to go back in front 8-7. They added an insurance run in the top of the sixth.
Kaffar had two hits with three RBIs. AJ Brandenburg finished with two hits and an RBI. Swanson added two doubles. Heinitz ended with two singles. Bunkers had a single with three RBIs. Bunkers pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts to earn the win.
