Cardinal Football Wins Third Straight

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal football team won their third straight game, and fourth overall, on Friday, October 2nd in Centerville.  The Cardinals defeated the Tornadoes 55-16.

St Mary scored early and often in the game.  They put up 41 points in the first half on their way to the big victory.

The Cardinals finished with 416 total yards of offense, 356 rushing yards and 60 passing yards.  Centerville finished with 199 yards of total offense, 123 passing yards and 76 rushing yards.  The Cardinal defense forced six turnovers in the game.

Connor Libis had nine carries in the game for 106 yards and three touchdowns.  Luke Geraets had eight carries for 50 yards.  Same Palmer finished with three carries for 45 yards.  CJ Smith was 3-3 passing with 60 yards and a touchdown.  Ashaun Roach-Valandra had all three catches for the 60 yards and a touchdown.

Libis had four tackles in the game.  Nick Wolles finished with 3.5 tackles.  Nic Gaspar added 3.5 tackles.  Palmer had two tackles and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.  John Pica added two tackles, one interception and one forced fumble.

“The offensive line did a great job opening holes, and the defensive line forced a lot of pressure the whole game,” said head coach Ross Flemmer.

St Mary (4-2) will host the Colman/Egan Hawks on Friday, October 9th.

Quarriers Drop First Game of Season to Panthers

The Dakota Valley Panthers found some homecoming magic as they handed the Dell Rapids Quarriers their first loss of the season.  The Panthers defeated the Quarriers on a cool and rainy night 16-14 on Friday, October 2nd.

Defense and ball control were big factors in the contest.  Dakota Valley had the ball for most of the first half.  They put together a long drive in the first quarter which resulted in a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter for a 7-0 lead.  The Panthers would score late in the second quarter on a 29-yard field goal to push the lead to 10-7.  Dell Rapids got a great return on the ensuing kick-off which led to a one-yard touchdown run by Austin Henry with just over a minute to play in the first half to cut the lead to 10-7.

Dell Rapids received the ball to begin the third quarter and scored quickly to take their first lead of the game.  Coby Maeschen scored on a one-yard touchdown run to put the Quarriers in front 14-10.  That score held until the final 2:30 in the game.  Dakota Valley executed a half-back pass to take the lead 16-14 after a blocked extra point.  Dell Rapids was able to put together a drive late in the game and had the ball on the Panther 15-yard line with :30 to go in the game.  Dakota Valley, however, intercepted a pass at the goal-line to seal the victory.

Dell Rapids finished with 206 yards of total offense, 199 yards rushing and seven passing yards.  Dakota Valley had 218 yards of offense, 182 rushing yards and 36 passing yards.  The Quarriers were just 1-7 on third down conversions in the game and 0-1 on fourth down.

Henry finished 1-7 passing for seven yards.  Brayden Gee had the only catch in the game.  Maeschen led the team with six carries for 69 yards and a touchdown.  Gee added seven carries for 54 yards.  Landon Ruesink had eight carries for 40 yards.   Maeschen had another big night defensively.  He finished with 15 tackles in the game.  Gee had eight tackles and sack.  Cody Schultz and Landon VonHoltum both had four tackles each.  Connor Rentz had an interception.

Dell Rapids (5-1) is scheduled to travel to Milbank on Friday, October 9th.

Quarrier Volleyball Gets Big Win in Lennox

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team got a big Dak-12 conference win over the Lennox Orioles on Thursday, October 1st in Lennox.  The Quarriers won the exciting match in five sets.

The Quarriers needed extra points to get the first set win.  Dell Rapids took the first set 26-24.  They were able to take that momentum into the second set and cruised to a 25-9 victory.  Lennox regrouped  and won the third set 25-18.  The Orioles then forced the fifth set by winning the fourth 25-20.  Dell Rapids then won the fifth and deciding set by a score of 15-9.

Kenzie Garry had a team-high 16 kills in the match.  Emma Van Regenmorter had 10 kills.  Sophi Randall and Kylee Fiddelke both had eight kills each.  Randall had 34 set assists as well as  25 digs and 12 blocks.  Van Regenmorter had 11 blocks.  Sam Price finished with 28 digs.  Mackenzie Apland had 12 digs.  Randall and Lexi Ingalls both had four ace serves.

Dell Rapids (3-12) is scheduled to play Canton on Saturday, October 3rd.

Cardinals Win Seventh Match of Season

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team won their seventh match of the season on Thursday, October 1st.  The Cardinals defeated the Lake Preston Divers in Lake Preston.

The Cardinals took control of the match right away and had no problems with the Divers.  St Mary won the first set 25-8 and then won the second set 25-15.  Lake Preston made it a little closer in the third, but St Mary took the straight-set match win with a 25-19 victory in the third set.

Courtney Brown had 11 kills, eight digs, five aces, and a block.  Ella Heinitz finished with 11 kills, 14 set assists, eight digs, five ace serves, and a block.  Ella Griffin finished with 13 set assists and six digs.  Maya Heinitz had eight digs, and Macie Brown had six digs.

St Mary (7-3) will continue to be on the road in their next two matches.  They will travel to Garretson on Tuesday, October 6th and then to Estelline on Thursday, October 8th.

Six Race for Quarrier Cross Country at Lennox

In a season that has seen many runners battle injuries, six runners took part in Lennox Oriole Cross Country Invitational on Thursday, October 1st for the Dell Rapids Quarrier cross country team.

The girls team had a full team participate, and they finished 10th with a total of 189 points.  Katrina Kruel finished with a time of 23:15.37.  Adisen Stadem had a time of 24:09.98.  Kathryn Fletcher had a time of 24:14.85.  Jayme Schmidt finished the race in 24:33.43.  Peyton VanZee had a time of 25:45.26.

Logan Anderson was the only one from the boys team that participated in the varsity race.  Anderson finished 20th with a time of 17:45.10.

The Quarriers will take a break for a week.  They will race at the Dak 12 Conference meet in Madison on Thursday, October 8th in the final meet before regions.

Boys 2nd, Girls 3rd and Individual Champ for Cardinal Cross Country at Colman

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal cross country teams had a great race on Wednesday, September 30th.  The Cardinals were at the Colman-Egan Invite held at Sunrise Ridge Golf Course in Colman.

The girls team finished third with 33 points.  Colman-Egan placed first as a team with 18 points.  Howard, who also scored 33 points, was awarded second place.

Lucy Vargas had a 10th place finish with a time of 22:53.94.  Lauren Rasmussen was 11th at 22:57.92.  Addy Gilbert finished 12th in a time of 22:58.43.  Sierra Klein, 34th, had a time of 25:37.97.

The boys team had a second place finish with a team score of 22 points.  Baltic was first with 12 points, and Elkton-Lake Benton finished third with 25 points.

Jacob Vogel won the boys race with a time of 17:27.58.  Thomas Eining was 10th with a time of 19:17.19.  Seth Roemen was right behind him in 12th with a time of 19:30.26.  Noah Reiff had a 19th place finish in 20:35.37.  Owen Vargas, 28th, had a time of 21:10.40.

The Cardinals will be at the Dakota Valley Conference race in De Smet on Wednesday, October 7th.

Cardinals Cooled by Baltic

Playing their second straight Class A team on back-to-back nights and coming off a big win over the Dell Rapids Quarriers, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals fell to the Baltic Bulldogs in Baltic on Tuesday, September 29th.  The Bulldogs won in straight sets by scores of 25-18, 25-20, and 27-25.

The first set was a close battle that saw both teams have leads of three points early in the set.   The Cardinals had a three-point advantage at 14-11, but the Bulldogs scored the next five points to take a 16-14 lead.  The lead grew to six points at 22-16 and eventually to seven for the 25-18 win.

The second set was back-and-forth almost the entire way.  There were over 15 ties in the set between the two teams.  St Mary looked to have taken a slight advantage when they took an 19-16 lead.   Baltic scored the next four points to take the lead at 20-19.  The Cardinals forced another tie at 20-20, but Baltic scored the last five points for the 25-20 win.

The two teams played it close early in the third set as well.  The score was tied 8-8 before the Cardinals went on a 7-1 run for a 15-9 advantage.   The lead stayed at six points for St Mary at 23-17, but Baltic went on a 7-0 run to take a 24-23 lead.  The Cardinals tied the set at 24-24, and then Baltic had to tie it at 25-25.  The Bulldogs then scored the final two points for the 27-25 set win for the match.

Courtney Brown had eight kills and 13 digs in the match.  Ella Heinitz finished with 11 set assists, 10 digs, seven kills, two blocks, and two ace serves.  Ella Griffin had seven set assists, six digs, four kills, and four ace serves.  Macie Brown and Josie Baumberger both had seven digs.

The Cardinals (6-3) travel to Lake Preston on Thursday, October 1st.

Cougars Defeat Dell Rapids in Volleyball Action

The Dell Rapids Quarriers have played a lot of volleyball over the last week, and they played in their second straight match in as many days on Tuesday, September 29th.  Going back to Thursday, September 24th, this was the seventh match in less than week. 

The Quarriers entertained the McCook Central/Montrose Cougars, and the Cougars won in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-21, and 25-19.

Dell Rapids, as they have done many times this season, got off to a fast start in the opening set.  After the Cougars got the first point, the Quarriers scored six in a row for a 6-1 lead.  Dell Rapids kept about a three point lead and led 10-7 early.  The Cougars were able to take the lead 16-15 and pushed the lead to 19-15 on the way to the 25-20 victory.

The Quarriers scored the first two points of the second set, but McCook Central/Montrose scored nine straight points for a 9-2 lead.  Dell Rapids was able to pull within two points at 23-21, but the Cougars scored the final two for the 25-21 win.

Dell Rapids got out to an early lead again in the third set at 8-4.  The Quarriers pushed the lead to 14-7 and then to 16-8.  The Cougars, however, scored 12 straight points for a 20-16 lead and went on to take the set 25-19 to win the match.

Kenzie Garry had 10 kills on the night.  Emma Van Regenmorter had seven kills, and Kylee Fiddelke finished with six kills.  Sophi Randall had 23 set assists.  Van Regenmorter had seven blocks.  Randall had five blocks, and Oliva Prasek and Fiddelke both had three blocks.  Sam Price led the team with 15 digs.  Fiddelke had 13 digs, and Mackenzie Apland had 10 digs.

Dell Rapids (2-11) will play at Lennox on Thursday, October 1st.

Quarrier Cheer 7th at O’Gorman

The Dell Rapids Quarier competitive cheer team performed in their seventh competition of the season on Tuesday, September 29th.  Dell Rapids was in Sioux Falls for the O’Gorman Invite.  Eleven teams between Class A and AA took part in the event.

The Quarriers placed seventh overall with a score of 188.5 points.  That point total was second among the Class A schools.  Sioux Falls Roosevelt was first with a score of 289.5.  O’Gorman placed second with 273 points.  Harrisburg was third at 271 points, and Sioux Valley was fourth with 267 points.  Deubrook and Dakota Valley were the other two Class A teams at the event, and they finished eighth and ninth respectively.

Dell Rapids will be in Brandon for the Brandon Valley Invite on Tuesday, October 6th.

Cardinal Volleyball Wins “Dell Rapids Battle” over Quarriers

Monday, September 29th, was the first of three battles between the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals and Dell Rapids Quarriers this season.  This first match-up was on the volleyball court at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The schools came together to provide a fun atmosphere for the teams.

The first set started back-and-forth with neither team getting a lead bigger than two points.  The Quarriers made a run of four straight with the score tied 9-9 to take a 13-9 lead.  The Cardinals were able to tie the set at 16-16 and then took a short 19-18 lead.  Dell Rapids then scored the next seven points for the 25-19 win.

The Cardinals and Quarriers battled back-and-forth again to start the second set.  The two teams were tied 7-7, but this time the Cardinals made the first run outscoring the Quarriers 6-1 for a 13-8 lead.  Dell Rapids chipped away at the lead and tied the set at 16-16.  They then took the lead 19-16.  Dell Rapids continued to lead by three at 21-18, but this time the Cardinals went on the late set run scoring the final seven points for a 25-21 victory to even the match.

After falling behind 3-1 early, St Mary continued to thrive on the momentum from the second set and went on a 7-0 run to lead 8-3.  The Quarriers stopped the run and scored five straight of their own to tie the set at 8-8.  St Mary then went ahead at 16-11 and continued roll winning the third set 25-13.

The fourth set was close early again as the two teams were tied 5-5.  The Quarriers looked to take momentum scoring eight points in a row for a 13-5 lead.  Dell Rapids still held a seven-point lead at 18-11, but the Cardinals started to make a run.  They cut the lead to 18-14.  The Quarriers responded with a mini 3-1 run to push the lead back to 21-15.  St Mary got hot scoring the next six points to tie the set at 21-21, and then finished the set 4-1 to win the set at 25-22 to win the match.

Ella Heinitz led the Cardinals with 18 kills.  She also finished with 14 digs and 13 set assists.  Courtney Brown had 14 kills and seven digs.  Maya Heinitz had a team-high 15 digs and four ace serves.  Ella Griffin had a team-high 15 set assists along with six digs.

Emma Van Regenmorter led the Quarriers with 10 kills in the match.  Kylee Fiddelke had nine kills, and Kenzie Garry had six kills.  Sophi Randall had a match-high 27 set assists.  Van Regenmorter had a match-high nine blocks.  Randall also had six blocks and eight ace serves.  Four players finished in double-figure digs for Dell Rapids.  Sam Price had 21 digs, Garry had 16, Randall added 12, and Fiddelke finished with 11 digs.

St Mary (6-2) will travel to Baltic on Tuesday, September 29th and then to Lake Preston on Thursday, October 1st.

Dell Rapids (2-11) will host McCook Central/Montrose on Tuesday, September 29th and then travel to Lennox on Thursday, October 1st.
