Cardinal Girls 8th, Boys 10th at De Smet Cross Country Invite

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls cross country team placed eighth and the boys team tied for 10th at the De Smet Invite on Thursday, September 9th.  The girls team finished with a total of 80 points.  The boys team had a total of 111 points.

Cami Wolles placed 25th individually with a time of 23:50.10.  Lucy Vargas was 36th with a time of 24:50.95.  Sierra Klien had a 44th place finish with a time of 25:50.66

Noah Reiff placed 30th with a time of 20:21.  Seth Roemen finished with a time of 20:48 for 32nd place.  Gabe Nelson finished in a time of 27:11.

St Mary will be at the Flyer Invite at Valley View Golf Course on Wednesday, September 15th.

Dell Rapids Hosts Cheer Invite

Dell Rapids held their Dell Rapids Competitive Cheer Invite on Tuesday, September 7th.  Eleven teams were initially scheduled to perform, but four of them had to miss.  The other six teams that participated were Dakota Valley, Sioux Valley, Elkton-Lake Benton, Platte/Geddes/AC/DC, Deubrook Area, and Dell Rapids St Mary.  Each team performed just one time during the night.

Sioux Valley took home first place with a score of 177.0.  Dakota Valley was second with 138.5 points.  Elkton-Lake Benton placed third with 122.0 points, just edging Dell Rapids with 120.5 points who finished fourth.  Deubrook Area was fifth with 118.5 points.  Platte/Geddes/AC/DC had 108.5 points, and Dell Rapids St Mary finished with 76 points.

The Quarriers are scheduled to perform at the Pheasants Invite in Redfield on Tuesday, September 14 for their next competition.  The Cardinals are scheduled to perform at the Brookings Invite on Saturday, September 18th for their next event.

Garretson Girls Soccer Falls to West Central

The Garretson Blue Dragon girls soccer team traveled to Hartford to play the #1 ranked West Central Trojans on Tuesday, September 7th.  The Trojans proved their number one ranking with five goals in the first half and three more in the second for an 8-0 win over the Blue Dragons.

Kayla Genzlinger did have 12 saves in goal for Garretson.  Jenna VanHolland had three shots.  Morgan Damman and Joely Sterud each had one shot on goal.

Garretson (2-5-0) will play at Dakota Valley on Saturday, September 11th.

Quarriers and Cardinals Race at Jesse James Cross Country Invite

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal and Dell Rapids Quarrier cross country teams traveled to Garretson for the Jesse James Invite on Tuesday, September 7th.

Five runners competed in the girls varsity race for the Cardinals.  Cami Wolles had a time of 23:47.17.  Sierra Klein posted a time of 24:47.44.  Addy Gilbert finished in 25:07.45.  Lucy Vargas had a time of 25:37.03, and Madison Reiff had a time of 25:48.17.

Dell Rapids had two runners in the girls varsity race.  Elizabeth Price finished with a time of 23:22.15.  Peyton VanZee had a time of 25:33.99.

Noah Reiff finished with a time of 20:31.12 for the Cardinal boys.  Seth Roemen had a time of 20:55.32.  Owen Vargas finished in 21:54.29.  Gabe Nelson had a time of 27:12.90

For the Dell Rapids Quarriers, Josh Fletcher placed second individually with a time of 17:53.90.  Weston Mason finished in 20:33.90.  Jack Montgomery had a time of 22:35.91.

The Quarriers will be at the Charger Invite at Yankton Trail Park on Tuesday, September 14th.  St Mary will race next in the Flyer Invite at Valley View Golf Course on Wednesday, September 15th.

Quarrier Boys Golf 7th at Parkston Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team had a seventh place finish as a team at the Parkston Invitational on Friday, September 3rd.  Dell Rapids had a team score of 405.  West Central won the team title with a score of 317.

Carter Traill had the low score on the day for Dell Rapids with a 92.  Tyler Tjaden had a round of 97.  Oscar Anderson had a round of 107.  Ryder VanZee finished with a 109.  Nick Snyder was a couple of shots behind at 111.  Gage Schultz had a 117, and Konrad Richeal had a round of 118.

Dell Rapids will travel to Vermillion for the Vermillion Invite at The Bluffs Golf Course on Thursday, September 9th.

Quarriers Notch First Football Win of 2021 Season

The Dell Rapids Quarrier football team picked up their first win of the 2021 season on the road on Friday, September 3rd.  Dell Rapids traveled to Sisseton and defeated the Redmen 40-0 to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Dell Rapids scored two times right away in the first quarter.  Landon Ruesink had both of the touchdowns.  He had a run of 16 yards and four yards for the scores.  Aiden Boechler made both extra points to give the Quarriers a 14-0 lead.

Austin Henry connected with Boechler on a 77-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.  Brayden Pankonen had a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown later in the quarter.  With 3:28 left in the half, Jack Henry completed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Pankonen.  On the ensuing kickoff, Sisseton let the ball go, which remained in the field of play, and Jade Anstine recovered the ball the Sisseton two-yard line for the Quarriers.  Ian Mason followed with a two-yard touchdown run to give Dell Rapids a 40- halftime score.  Neither team scored in the second half with the running clock.

The Quarriers finished with 326 yards of offense, 213 rushing yards and 113 passing yards.  Dell Rapids was 2-8 on third down attempts, 1-2 on fourth down, and had 15 first downs.  Sisseton was held to just 96 yards of total offense, had only four first downs, and were 0-11 on third down.

Ruesink had six carries for 62 yards and two touchdowns.  Treyse Eastman had four carries for 58 yards.  Mason finished with four carries for 23 yards and a touchdown.  A. Henry was 1-2 passing for 77 yards and a touchdown.  J. Henry was 3-2 passing for 36 yards and a touchdown.  Boechler had a catch for 77 yards and a touchdown.  Pankonen had two catches for 36 yards and a touchdown.  Aiden Geraets , Eastman, and Jaton all had five tackles each.  Mason Stubbe, Anstine, and Landon Von Holtum all had four tackles each.

Dell Rapids will have their first home game of the season on Friday, September 10th when they host the Chamberlain Cubs.

Cardinals Fall to Avon at Home

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals hosted the Avon Pirates on Friday, September 3rd at Rickeman Field.  After St Mary scored the first touchdown, Avon scored 48 straight points on their way to a 48-14 win over the Cardinals.

CJ Smith completed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Tate Bunkers with 3:17 to play in the opening quarter for the first score of the game.  That was the only lead the Cardinals would hold.  The Pirates tied the game after a 20-yard Brady Bierema run, and then they took the lead on a two-point conversion by Jaden Stahl.  Avon led 8-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Avon controlled the game through the middle two quarters.  Bierema had a 27-yard touchdown run, Stahl had a seven-yard touchdown run, and Riley Rucktaeschel had a four-yard touchdown run to give the Pirates a 28-6 halftime lead.  They added to that score with two third-quarter touchdowns.  Bierema scored two more times on runs of 15 yards and five yards.

Tyler Tjeerdsma scored the final touchdown for Avon with 10:14 to play in the fourth quarter.  The Cardinals got another score when Lucas Flemmer had a 54-yard touchdown run with 9:45 to go in the game.  Owen Vargas completed a pass to Camden Gilbert for the two-point conversion.

St Mary was held to 195 yards of total offense, 131 rushing yards and 64 passing yards.  They had a total of six first downs.  The Cardinals were 0-7 on third down attempts and 0-4 on fourth down.  Avon finished with 381 yards of offense, 362 rushing yards and 19 passing yards.  The Pirates had 23 first downs and were 7-10 on third down attempts.

Flemmer finished the game with three carries for 65 yards and a touchdown.  Smith had five carries for 38 yards.  Gabe Lindeman had five runs for 18 yards.  Smith was 5-13 passing for 64 yards with a touchdown and an interception.  Bunkers had two catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.  John Pica had 14 tackles in the game.  Ty Brown finished with 11 tackles.  Lindeman had nine tackles, and Noah Olund and Nic Gaspar both had seven tackles each.

The Cardinals travel to Colman to play the Colman-Egan Hawks on Friday, September 10th.

Quarriers Fall to Tough Charger Team

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team fell to a tough Sioux Falls Christian Charger team on Thursday, September 2nd.  The Quarriers fell in straight sets by scores of 21-25, 17-25, and 13-25.

Dell Rapids got out to an early 3-0 lead in the opening set.  The Chargers found themselves ahead by three points later in the set at 8-5.  The Chargers maintained the lead and lead 16-13.  The Quarriers rallied and tied the set at 16-16.  Sioux Falls Christian scored five in a row to lead 21-16.  Dell Rapids pulled within a point at 22-21, but the Chargers scored the final three points for the win.

The momentum carried into the second set for Sioux Falls Christian.  They got out to a big 14-1 lead.  Dell Rapids cut the lead down to seven at 24-17 before the Chargers took the win.  Sioux Falls Christian opened the third set with a 7-3 lead.  The Chargers pushed the lead to 17-6 and went on to win 25-13.

JoJo Henry led the team with six kills.  Sophi Randall and Kenzie Garry both had five kills.  Kylee Fiddelke had three kills.  Henry had the lone ace serve for the Quarriers in the match.  Riley Hill and Fiddelke both had four blocks each.  Garry and Randall both had two blocks.  Henry had a team-high 11 digs, and Hill had  10 digs.  Randall led the team with 11 set assists, and Hill finished with seven.

Cardinal Volleyball Cruises to Win over Mitchell Christian

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team had no trouble earning their sixth win of the season on Thursday, September 2nd.  St Mary traveled to Mitchell and defeated the Mitchell Christian Golden Eagles in straight sets by scores of 25-11, 25-9, and 25-19.

Maya Heinitz had 10 kills, three digs, and an ace serve in the match.  Courtney Brown also had 10 kills and three digs.  Brianna Lindeman finished with 10 set assists, seven ace serves, four digs, and two kills.  Ella Griffin tallied eight set assists, five ace serves, and four kills.  Addy Gilbert had five kills and two blocks.  Madala Hanson ended the night with 10 set assists.  Josie Baumberger had three digs and an ace serve, and Jaycee Tebay had five ace serves and two digs.

The Cardinals (6-1) will travel to Canistota on Thursday, September 9th.

Cardinal Volleyball Wins Fifth Match of Season

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team has already won their fifth match of the season.  The Cardinals opened the season with a win at home on Thursday, August 26th.  They finished the Redhawk Tournament 3-1 on Saturday, August 28th.  And on Tuesday, August 31st the Cardinals won for the fifth time in Rutland.

St Mary took a four-set win over the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders.  The Cardinals opened the match with a 25-22 win.  The Raiders bounced back with a win in the second set 14-25.  St Mary would make sure the match would only go four sets as they won the next two by scores of 25-21 and 25-16.

The Cardinals finished with 42 kills as a team, 40 digs, 32 set assists, and 12 ace serves in the match.  Courtney Brown had 17 kills and 11 digs.  Ella Griffin had eight kills, five digs, nine set assists, and four ace serves.  Brianna Lindeman finished with 14 set assists and five digs.  Maya Heinitz added seven kills and four ace serves.

St Mary will be on the road on Thursday, September 2nd at Mitchell Christian.
