Quarriers Cruise Past Canton in Volleyball Action

The Dell Rapids Quarriers cruised to a straight set win over the Canton C-Hawks at home on Tuesday, September 14th.  Dell Rapids won by set scores of 25-12, 25-20, and 25-13.  It was just the second home match of the season and the second time Dell Rapids has defeated Canton this year.

In the opening set, the first half was a close battle.  The two teams were tied 10-10, but that’s when the Quarriers caught fire.  Dell Rapids scored nine straight points to build a 19-10 lead and finished the set with a 25-12 win.

The second set was a bit closer.  Neither team was able to build a lead of more than two or three points early.  The score was tied 13-13, but Dell Rapids then scored seven straight points for a 20-13 lead.  Canton pulled within four at 23-19, but Dell Rapids finished the set with a 25-20 win.

The Quarriers continued to ride the momentum in the third set.  Once again they turned a slim 13-11 lead into a 10-point lead with eight straight points.  Dell Rapids closed out the third set at 25-13 to win the match.

Sophi Randall finished the match with eight kills, four blocks, four digs, and seven set assists.  Kenzie Garry had seven kills, two blocks, and seven digs.  JoJo Henry had five kills, eight ace serves, and nine digs.  Riley Hill had a team-high 12 set assists, along with eight digs, two kills, and an ace serve.   Clara Justice had two kills and two blocks.

Dell Rapids will travel to Tri-Valley on Thursday, September 16th.

Garretson Girls Soccer Suffers Losses in Last Two Matches

The Garretson Blue Dragon girls soccer team suffered losses in their last two matches.

On Saturday, September 11th, Garretson traveled to Dakota Valley.  The Blue Dragons fell to the Panthers by a score of 2-1.  Kylie Christensen scored off of a corner kick by Jenna VanHolland in the game.  VanHolland had five shots on goal.  Christensen had three shots on goal.  Madison Ljunggren had two, and Joely Sterud and Jordyn Williams both had one shot on goal.

“We were aggressive right off the bat and held with them the entire game.  We were able to possess the ball in the midfield and played solid defense,” said head coach Amber Williamson.

The Blue Dragons again took to the road on Tuesday, September 14th.  They traveled to Vermillion and fell to the Tanagers 5-1.  The match was 2-1 at halftime in favor of Vermillion.

“We were on our offensive half possessing the ball for the majority of the game, but could not find the back of the net,” said Williamson.

Cortney Rogich had 10 saves in goal.  The lone goal for Garretson came from Raegen Altman and was assisted by Williams.  Pagie Sterud, J. Sterud, and VanHolland each had two shots on goal.  Ljunggren and Morgan Damman each had a one shot on goal.

Garretson will host West Central on Thursday, September 16th, which will also be parent’s night.

Quarrier Cross Country Team Races at Charger Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarrier cross country team ran in the Sioux Falls Christian Charger Invite at Yankton Trails Park in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, September 14th.

Dell Rapids had a total of five runners participate in the varsity races, and neither the boys nor girls team had enough runners to have a team score.

Adisen Stadem placed 19th individually with a time of 21:49.42.  Elizabeth Prize was 41st with a time of 23:19.22.  Peyton VanZee had a time of 24:55.99.

Josh Fletcher placed ninth with a time of 17:42.82.  Jack Montgomery finished with a time of 21:05.84.

Dell Rapids will host the Quarrier Invite at Rocky Run Golf Course on Wednesday, September 22nd.

Cardinal Volleyball Wins Fourth Straight

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team won their fourth straight match on Monday, September 13th.  The Cardinals defeated the Sioux Falls Lutheran Eagles in straight sets by set scores of 25-10, 25-18, and 26-24.  During their four match winning streak, the Cardinals have only lost one set.  St Mary, now 8-1 on the season, has only lost four sets total on the year.

The Cardinals seemed ready to make quick work of the Eagles.  In the opening set, St Mary scored the six points.  They pushed the lead to 12-2 and continued to roll from there winning the first set 25-10.  Sioux Falls Lutheran regrouped during the break and jumped out to a 10-3 lead to start the second set.   St Mary, though, slowly chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the set at 13-13.  The set was tied again 15-15 before the Cardinals finished the set on a 10-3 run to win 25-18.  The Eagle again got out to an early lead in the third set at 9-2.  St Mary’s comeback was a bit slower than in the second set.  Sioux Falls Lutheran was able to keep a three-to-four point lead throughout much of the middle portion of the set.  The Cardinals eventually tied the set 17-17.  The teams went back and forth trading points until the score was 21-21.  The Eagles then scored the next three points to lead 24-21.  The Cardinals put one more rally together scoring the final five points for the 26-24 win.

Courtney Brown finished with 11 kills, 17 digs, and two ace serves.  Brianna Lindeman had six kills, 14 set assists, four digs, and two ace serves.  Maya Heinitz added seven kills, eight digs, and five ace serves.  Ella Griffin had two ace serves, and a block.  Madala Hanson finished with nine set assists.  Whitney Warwick also had two ace serves, and Brianna Griffin had two blocks. 

The Cardinals will travel to White to play Deubrook on Thursday, September 16th.

Dell Rapids Softball Splits Weekend Games

The Dell Rapids high school softball team split in their two games on Saturday, September 11th in Madison.  Dell Rapids fell to West Central 8-0 in their first game, and then defeated Vermillion 11-6 in the second game.

West Central held Dell Rapids to just three hits in the game.  The Trojans scored three runs in the bottom of the first, three more in the bottom of the third, and the final two in the bottom of the sixth.  Kylie Lebahn and Lexi Ingalls both had triples.  Kya Alderson had the other hit.  Alderson pitched six innings allowing eight runs, seven earned, on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids rallied in the second game.  Vermillion got out to a 4-1 lead after the first two innings.  Dell Rapids, however, rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third, four more in the bottom of the fourth, and two in the bottom of the fifth for an 11-4 lead.  Vermillion got two runs in the sixth inning.

Claire Wynja had four hits, including two triples, and three RBIs.  Kenzie Garry had two hits, one a triple, and two RBIs.  Haileigh Barnhart had two hits.  Lebahn finished with a double and an RBI.  Rileigh Foster had a single and an RBI.  Ingalls added a double, and Katie Kvigne had a single.  Kvigne pitched six innings allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Cardinal Football Evens Record with Win in Colman

After the first three possessions of the game resulted in touchdowns, the defenses played strong for most of the rest of the game between the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals and Colman-Egan Hawks on Friday, September 10th in Colman.  That is until the Cardinals scored two touchdowns in the last five minutes of the game in a 36-8 victory.

The Cardinals scored on the first offensive possession of the game when Ty Brown scored on a five-yard run with 8:29 to play in the quarter for a 6-0 lead.  Colman-Egan scored two plays later when Dawson Tolley scored on a 52-yard run with 7:42 in the first.  Tolley also scored the two-point conversion for a short-lived 8-6 lead.  The Cardinals made sure the lead was short lived when they scored again with 5:56 remaining in the quarter.  Tate Bunkers scored on a five-yard run, and Nic Gaspar scored the two-point conversion for a 14-8 lead.

The next St Mary touchdown would not come until late in the second quarter.  CJ Smith had a one-yard touchdown run with 2:57 to play in the first half.  The two-point conversion was no good, and the Cardinals led 20-8 at halftime.  The scored remained 20-8 through the entire third quarter and most of the fourth quarter.  Lucas Flemmer had a six-yard run with 4:45 to play in the game.  Smith completed a pass to Gabe Lindeman for the two-point conversion.  The Cardinals scored again with :57 when Brown scored on a two-yard run.  Smith completed the pass to Flemmer for the two-point conversion.

St Mary finished with 382 yards of total offense, 362 rushing yards and  20 passing yards.  They had a total of 19 first downs and were 4-9 on third down attempts.  The Hawks had 202 yards of total offense, 180 rushing yards and 22 passing yards.

The Cardinals nearly had three rushers with over 100 yards in the game.  Brown finished with 16 carries for 117 yards and two touchdowns.  Flemmer had 11 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown.  Gaspar finished just one yard shy of 100 with 99 yards on 16 carries.  Bunkers had seven carries for 45 yards and a touchdown.  Smith was 1-3 passing for 20 yards.  Noah Olund had the 20-yard catch.  Lindeman led the defense with 13 total tackles and one sack.  John Pica had nine tackles.  Kyle Bares finished with eight tackles.  Gaspar finished with four tackles.  Smith and Brown each had an interception, and Gaspar and Flemmer had a fumble recovery.

Quarriers Cruise Past Chamberlain in Home Opener

The Dell Rapids Quarriers cruised to a 42-14 win over the Chamberlain Cubs on Friday, September 10th.   It was the first home game of the season for the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids put 21 points on the board in a big hurry in the opening quarter.  Brayden Pankonen found the endzone on a 15 yard run on the second offense play for Dell Rapids.  Four plays later, Pankonen was in the endzone again, this time on a 45-yard interception return.  And just like that Dell Rapids was ahead 14-0.  On their next offensive possession, Austin Henry connected with Landon Ruesink on a 40-yard touchdown pass to give Dell Rapids a 21-0 lead.  Chamberlain got a score in the first quarter to cut the lead to 21-7.  Ruesink scored on a three-yard run in the second quarter, and Dell Rapids led 28-7 at halftime.

The Quarriers scored two more times in the third quarter.  Henry and Ruesink connected again on a 37-yard touchdown pass, and Jade Anstine had a seven-yard touchdown run.  Dell Rapids led 42-7 at the end of the third quarter.  The Cubs  added another score in the fourth quarter.

Dell Rapids finished with 298 yards of total offense, 151 passing yards and 147 rushing yards.  They had a total of 15 first downs and were 5-7 on third down attempts.

Anstine had seven carries for 34 yards and a touchdown.  Treyse Eastman had four carries for 34 yards.  Landon VonHultum had six carries for 33 yards.  Pankonen had five carries for 19 yards and a touchdown.  Ruesink finished with four carries for 13 yards and a rushing touchdown.  Henry was 6-7 passing for 151 yards and two touchdowns.  Ruesink had three catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns.  Pankonen had two catches for 23 yards, and Aiden Boechler had a catch for 36 yards.

Mason Stubbe and VonHoltum both had five tackles each.  Ruesink, Ian Mason, and Aiden Geraets all finished with four tackles.  Boechler, Will Jaton, and Anstine had three tackles apiece.  Pankonen had two interceptions and a defensive touchdown.

Dell Rapids (2-1) will host Lennox on Friday, September 17th.

Quarrier Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match in Tea

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team dropped a five-match thriller in Tea to the Titans on Thursday, September 9th.  Dell Rapids has not played a home match since August 26th.  The Quarriers have gone 4-3 during that time.

The Titans took the first set of the match 25-16.  Dell Rapids was able to get an extra-time win in the second set, winning 26-24.  The Titans took the third set by a 25-19 score.  The Quarriers forced the fifth set with a 25-19 win of their own in the fourth set.  The Titans were able to win the match with a close 15-12 win in the fifth and final set.

Kenzie Garry led the team with 11 kills on the night.  Sophi Randall added 10 kills.  JoJo Henry finished with seven kills.  Riley Hill and Randall both had four ace serves.  Kylee Fiddelke finished with three.  Randall led the team with 10 blocks.  Fiddelke and Garry both had eight blocks each.  Five players finished in double figures in digs.  Hill had 17 digs.  Emma Molskness had 13 digs.  Garry finished with 10 digs, and Henry and Randall both had 10 digs each.  Hill finished with 16 set assists, and Randall had 12 set assists.

Dell Rapids will be back home on Tuesday, September 14th when they host the Canton C-Hawks.

Cardinal Volleyball Earns Another Road Victory

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team has not had a home match since August 26th.  Since that opening-season home match, the Cardinals went 3-1 in a tournament and now have won three straight road matches.  St Mary defeated the Canistota Hawks in straight sets on Thursday, September 9th.  The set scores were 25-7, 25-22, and 25-11.

Courtney Brown had 15 kills and nine digs in the match.  Maya Heinitz had five kills, seven digs, and two blocks.  Brianna Lindeman finished with 13 set assists, nine digs, four kills and two ace serves.  Ella Griffin had six set assists, four ace serves, three kills, three digs, and a block.  Madala Hanson finished with seven set assists and a dig.  Josie Baumberger added eight digs and an ace serve.  Addy Gilbert had two kills and two digs, and Brianna Griffin had three blocks, two kills and a dig.

The Cardinals will be back home on Monday, September 13th when they host the Sioux Falls Lutheran Eagles.

Quarrier Boys Golf Competes at Vermillion Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team participated in the Vermillion Invite with 13 other teams on Thursday, September 9th.  Dell Rapids finished with a team score of 432.

Carter Traill had the low score on the day with a 100.  Nick Snyder and Tyler Tjaden both had a round of 110.  Oscar Anderson finished with a 112.  Ryder VanZee had a round of 117, and Gage Schultz finished with a 132.

Dell Rapids will play at the Elk Point-Jefferson Match Play Invitational held at The Pointe Golf and Event Center on Thursday, September 16th.
