Cardinal Girls Hang on for Win

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls held a 29-14 lead at halftime and hung on for a 50-44 win over the Lake Preston Divers on Friday, January 8th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

The Cardinals, who never trailed in the game, led 18-7 after the first quarter.  St Mary pushed their their lead to 17 points with 1:16 to go in the second quarter before heading into the locker room ahead by 15 points.  Lake Preston closed the gap in the third quarter to 39-30.  The Divers couldn’t complete the comeback in the fourth as the Cardinals hit enough free-throws down the stretch for the win.

St Mary shot 28% (16-57) from the field and were 71% (17-24) from the free-throw line.  Lake Preston finished the game shooting 30% (16-53) from the field and 60% (9-15) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals out-rebounded the Divers 48-38 in the game.

Jackie Wolles led all scores with 23 points.  Lexi Klein added 10 points, and Kennedi Mullaney finished with eight points.  Sydney Cook pulled down 10 rebounds while Wolles and Mullaney each had seven.  Wolles and Cook both had three steals in the game as well.

The Cardinals (2-6) travel to Canistota on Thursday, January 14th.

Quarriers Sweep Beresford in Double-Header

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls and boys teams both earned wins over the Beresford Watchdogs on Thursday, January 7th, at Dell Rapids High School.  The girls earned a 46-25 win while the boys team won 72-53.

The girls team led from start to finish.  The Quarriers had a 10 point lead after the first quarter 16-6.  The lead had grown to 12 points by halftime at 25-13.  Dell Rapids kept rolling in the second half extending their lead to 39-21 by the end of the third quarter.

The boys team also led at every quarter break.  Dell Rapids led 18-10 after the first quarter, but outscored Beresford 24-14 too take 42-24 lead into halftime.  The Quarriers added 22 more points in third quarter and pushed their lead to 64-37 by the end of the quarter.

The Quarrier girls team (5-3) will host Lennox on Monday, January 11th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.  The Quarrier boys team (5-1) travel to Chamberlain on Friday, January 8th.

Canistota Too Much for Cardinal Boys

DRSM LogoThe Canistota Hawks shot 54% from the field and defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys 73-24 on Thursday, January 7th, in Canistota.  The Hawks were 33-61 from the field and 6-15 from beyond the three-point line.  The Cardinals finished the game shooting just 22% (10-46) and were 1-15 from beyond the arc.

Canistota led 30-4 after the first quarter, 50-8 at halftime, and 65-13 at the end of the third quarter.

Noah Fiegen finished with six points and five rebounds for the Cardinals.  Garret Frost and Austin Welbig each had five points.  Frost also added five rebounds.

Quarrier Wrestling Results from Dak-12 Meet #2 in Madison

NewQuarrierLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team went to Madison on Tuesday, January 5th, to take part in the Dak-12 Meet #2.  Madison, Beresford and Canton were the other three teams a part of this meet.  Dell Rapids ended up losing both team matches.  Beresford defeated Dell Rapids 54-24, and Canton beat Dell Rapids 73-6.  Below are the individual results.  The Quarriers will travel to Brandon for the Garretson Tournament on Saturday, January 9th.

Cardinal Girls Fall to Chester

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls couldn’t get past the Chester Area Flyers on Tuesday, January 5th, in Chester.  The Flyers defeated the Cardinals 56-30.

St Mary held a one-point lead with with 1:56 to go in the first quarter, but the Flyers would go on a run and end the quarter ahead 16-9.  Chester Area pushed the lead to 35-16 at halftime.  The Flyers continued to extend their lead in the second half by out-scoring St Mary 21-14 in the final two quarters.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting just 19% (8-42) from the field and 65% (15-23) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had 31 team rebounds and turned the ball over 16 times.

Jackie Wolles ended the night with 12 points.  Lexi Klein added six points, and Abby Burkhart finished with five.  Cassy Geraets, Wolles, and Burkhart all finished with four rebounds apiece.  Klein had two assists, while Wolles had four steals.

St Mary (1-6) will host Lake Preston on Friday, January 8th, as part of a girls-boys double-header.  The games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Boys Back in Win Column

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers got back into the win column on Monday, January 4th, by beating the Pipestone Area Arrows 79-54.  The Quarriers took a 22-point lead into halftime at 48-26 on the way to the win.

Four Quarrier players scored double-figures led by Ty Hoglund with 28 points.  Carson Rentz finished with 13 points, Jeffrey Schuch added 11 points, and Mason Peter had 10 points.  Schuch led the team with six rebounds on the night.  Mason Schmidt and Sheldon Siemonsma both had five rebounds.  Rentz dished out four assists as well.

Dell Rapids shot 53% (28-53) from the field in the game, 50% (8-16) from three-point area, and 75% (15-20) from the free-throw line.  The team finished with 29 rebounds, 16 assists, and 10 steals.

The Quarriers (4-1) will host Beresford on Thursday, January 7th.  The game can be seen as part of a girls-boys double-header on Big Sioux Media.

JV Results:

The Quarriers JV team won the “border battle” against the Pipestone Area Arrows.  Dell Rapids defeated the Arrows 57-47.  Leading the way for the Quarriers was Elijah Story with 20 points.  Other top scorers were Mason Schmidt with 11 and Josh Roemen and Caleb Kirschenmann with six points each.  Dell Rapids had seven three-pointers on the night and shot 12-15 from the free-throw line.

Garretson Rides Second Quarter to Win over Cardinal Boys

DRSM LogoThe Garretson Blue Dragons out-scored the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals 21-7 in the second quarter, which proved to be the difference in a 64-48 win on Monday, January 4th, in Garretson.

The Cardinals led by as many as six points in the first quarter, but Garretson rallied to take a 19-18 lead at the end of the quarter.  The Blue Dragons then used the big second quarter and pushed their lead to 40-25 at halftime.  Garretson led 56-35 at the end of the third quarter.

St Mary finished the game shooting 27% (16-59) from the field, 25% (5-20) from the three-point area, and 52% (12-23) from the free-throw line.  Garretson out-rebounded the Cardinals 46-29 and forced 14 St Mary turnovers.

Noah Fiegen led the team with 14 points, six rebounds, and three steals.  Luke Brown had 12 points and five rebounds.  Connor Libis added 11 points and three assists.

The Cardinals (1-5) travel to Canistota on Thursday, January 7th.

Sioux Valley Rallies in 4th to Upset Quarrier Boys

NewDRLogoIn a battle of top Class A teams, the Sioux Valley Cossacks rallied from a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter to stun the Dell Rapids Quarriers 64-61 at the Entringer Classic in Brookings on Thursday, December 31st.

Dell Rapids and Sioux Valley battled back and forth in the first quarter and ended the quarter in a 13-13 tie.  The Quarriers started to pull away in the second quarter and led 33-24 at halftime.  Dell Rapids carried the momentum into the third quarter and extended their lead to 55-39 at the end of the quarter.  However, Sioux Valley out-scored Dell Rapids 25-6 in the final quarter to pull off the come-from-behind win over the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids shot 42% (24-57) from the field, 34% (11-32) from three-point area, and 50% (2-4) from the free-throw line.  Sioux Valley finished 50% (24-48) from the field, 39% (7-18) from three-point area, and 60% (9-15) from the free-throw line.  The Cossacks out-rebounded Dell Rapids 33-29.

Ty Hoglund finished with 23 points, six assists, and five rebounds.  Mason Schmidt had 13 points and five rebounds.  Sheldon Siemonsma added 11 points.  Sam White finished the game with seven rebounds.  Sioux Valley was led by Tayt Vincent and Collin Kramer both with 21 points.  Kramer was named the game’s MVP.

Dell Rapids (3-1) will travel to Pipestone, MN to take on the Arrows on Monday, January 4th.

First Quarter Sinks Cardinal Boys

DRSM LogoOldham-Ramona/Rutland raced out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter and held on to defeat the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys 50-36 at the Entringer Classic in Brookings on Thursday, December 31st.

The Raiders scored the first 19 points in the first quarter and led 19-3 after a last-second three point basket at the buzzer.  The Cardinals outscored the Raiders 33-31 the rest of the game, but could not overcome the 16-point deficit.  Oldham-Ramona/Rutland led 35-19 at halftime and 43-26 at the end of the third quarter.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 24% (11-46) from the field, 38% (6-16) from three-point area, and 67% (6-9) from the free-throw line.  St Mary had a total of 38 team rebounds, six assists, six steals, and turned the ball over 27 times.

Connor Libis led the team with 18 points in the game.  Luke Brown finished with six points and five rebounds.  Garret Frost and Drew Wood each had three points apiece.  Zach Geraets and Noah Fiegen finished two points and 10 rebounds each.

St Mary (1-4) travels to Garretson to play the Blue Dragons on Monday, January 4th.

Ipswich Hands Cardinal Girls Loss

DRSM LogoAfter trailing 7-0 in the first two minutes of the game, the Ipswich Tigers went on to beat the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls 56-39 at the Swiftel Classic on Wednesday, December 3oth, in Brookings.

St Mary led 7-0 with 6:01 left in the first quarter, but Ipswich out-scored the Cardinals 15-3 the rest of the quarter to take a 15-10 lead.  The Tigers would not lose the lead.  Ipswich extended their lead to 31-18 at halftime.  The Tigers then led 43-29 at the end of the third quarter.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 38% (16-42) from the field, 33% (1-3) from three-point area, and 60% (6-10) from the free-throw line.  St Mary out-rebounded the Tigers 39-30 in the game, but Ipswich forced 33 St Mary turnovers.

Jackie Wolles led St Mary with 12 points and four rebounds.  Kennedi Mullaney had 10 points and four rebounds.  Abby Burkhart added nine points, and Sydney Cook finished with five points.

St Mary (1-5) will travel to Chester to take on the Chester Area Flyers on Tuesday, January 5th.
