Quarrier Girls Win Fourth Straight

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls defeated the Andes Central/Dakota Christian (AC/DC) Thunder 48-35 at the Hanson Classic at the Mitchell Corn Palace on Saturday, January 16th.

The game featured five ties and 11 lead changes.  Dell Rapids held a 5-4 lead after the first quarter.  The Thunder took the lead in the second quarter and held their largest lead at five points with 5:34 to go in the second quarter.  However, the Quarriers regained the lead and went into the locker room at halftime ahead 17-16.  Dell Rapids pulled away in the second half by outscoring the Thunder 31-19 in the final two quarters for the win.

The Quarriers shot 35% (15-43) from the field and 78% (18-23) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids was a perfect 13-13 in the second half from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had a total of 32 team rebounds and eight steals.

Mikaela Stofferahn led all scorers with 14 points.  Stofferahn also had five rebounds and two assists.  Emma Paul finished with 12 points, five rebounds, and four steals.  Kaylee Hennen and Averi Pankonen each had six points.  Arial Hoffman and Pankonen both had five rebounds.

Dell Rapids (7-3) travels to Hartford to take on the West Central Trojans on Tuesday, January 19th.

Quarrier Wrestling Drops Two in Vermillion

NewQuarrierLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team lost two duals in a Dak12 meet on Thursday, January 14th, in Vermillion.  Dell Rapids lost to Madison 60-18 and also fell to Vermillion 46-30.

Head coach Craig Jorgensen said, “We are going to struggle winning duals because we give up so many points in forfeits. We try and focus on what we can control, which is individual matches. I was happy with our wrestlers efforts. We really worked hard on the mat. I was very impressed with the effort in the Vermillion dual. We scored 30 points and won six of the nine matches wrestled.  Wrestler of the night was James Lueders who pulled off a big win over Noah Walker 6-1.”

Cardinal Girls Fall Short in Canistota

DRSM LogoThe Canistota Hawks came from behind and defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal Girls 52-46 on Thursday, January 14th, in Canistota.  St Mary led 14-10 after the first quarter.  They extended their lead to 9 with 6:09 to go in the second quarter and led 26-19 at halftime.  Canistota outscored the Cardinals 14-8 in the third quarter, but St Mary still clung to a 34-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The Hawks completed the come back by outscoring St Mary 19-12 for the win.

The Cardinals shot 40% (16-40) from the field, 60% (3-5) from three-point area, and 69% (11-16) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also out-rebounded the Hawks 34-23.  The Cardinals had 13 team assists, 10 steals, but turned the ball over 30 times.

Jackie Wolles had 14 points along with six rebounds in the game.  Sydney Cook finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.  Kennedi Mullaney added eight points, six rebounds, and six assists.  Cassy Geraets had four steals.

The Cardinals (2-7) will play the Colman-Egan Hawks in the opening around of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament on Tuesday, January 19th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Boys Flex Muscles Against SF Christian

DRHSvsSFC_BBB_1-12-16In a packed Dell Rapids High School gymnasium that had standing room only, the Dell Rapids Quarriers knocked off the #1 Sioux Falls Christian Chargers 50-47 on Tuesday, January 12th.

The Quarriers jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Chargers pulled within four by the break to trail 12-8 at the end of the first quarter.  Dell Rapids again extended their lead to 10 points a couple of times in the second quarter, but went into the locker room leading 27-20 at halftime.  Ty Hoglund had 21 of the 27 points for Dell Rapids in the first half.

The game continued to be exciting and intense in the second half has Sioux Falls Christian cut the Quarrier lead down to two in the third quarter, but Dell Rapids was able to end the quarter ahead 38-33.

“Sioux Falls Christian did a great job of cutting down the driving lanes in the third quarter,” said Hoglund.

The Chargers continued with their defensive intensity in the fourth quarter as they took the lead for the first time in the game with 5:47 to go.  This was part of a 12-2 run in which the Chargers led by five points at 45-40 with 3:32 to go in the game.  Dell Rapids then closed out the game on a 10-2 run sparked by a three-point basket by Sheldon Siemonsma and a three-point play by Hoglund after being fouled on a made layup.

“Beating Sioux Falls Christian is a great confidence booster knowing we can play with any team in the state,” Hoglund also said.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 57% (20-35) from the field, 27% (3-11) from three-point area, and 70% (7-10) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers finished with 18 total rebounds, 11 steals, and eight assists.

Hoglund finisehd with 32 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the game.  Siemonsma had nine points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Jeffrey Schuch added five points and three steals.  Sam White and Mason Peter both finished the game with two points and four rebounds apiece.

The Quarriers (7-1) will host Garretson on Tuesday, January 19th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Parker Too Much for Cardinal Boys

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys couldn’t get back into the win column on Tuesday, January 12th, as St Mary lost to the Parker Pheasants 77-33 at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

The Pheasants led from start to finish in the game.  Parker led 13-6 after the first quarter, but pushed their lead to 41-20 at halftime.  The Pheasants were leading 63-30 at the end of the third quarter.

St Mary shot 26% (11-43) from the field in the game, 29% (7-24) from three-point area, and 40% (4-10) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals were out rebounded 50-30 in the game and turned the ball over 25 times.

Connor Libis had 11 points for St Mary.  Luke Brown and Jason Cook each had six points.  Noah Fiegen pulled down five rebounds, and Luke Brown had three rebounds.  Austin Welbig finished with three assists.

St Mary (1-8) plays Alcester-Hudson on Saturday, January 16th, in Yankton.

St Mary Coach to be Honored at USD Track and Field Hall of Honor

DRSM LogoDell Rapids St Mary Cardinal assistant track and field coach Mark Liebl will be inducted into the University of South Dakota Track and Field Hall of Honor on Saturday, January 16th, at 4:00 p.m. along with two other individuals. The Hall of Honor originated in 2002 to recognize former athletes and contributors to the South Dakota track and field program.  The Hall of Honor will now include 55 members.

A native of Menno, S.D., Liebl was the runner-up in the javelin at the 2006 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships with a school record-breaking throw of 221 feet, one inch. Liebl’s All-America performance, teamed with runner-up finishes by Dan Tolsma (hammer throw) and Terry Liggins (110-meter hurdles), led the Coyotes to a fourth-place finish in the team race. Liebl’s javelin mark remains both the school and state record. He also holds program top-10 marks in the discus and hammer throw. While at South Dakota, Liebl was actively involved in Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

A 2002 graduate of Menno High School, Liebl placed in four South Dakota state track and field meets. A four-sport athlete, he was involved in track and field, cross country, basketball, and football. He received all-state honors in both basketball and football.

Liebl enters his fourth year as an assistant track and field coach at Dell Rapids St. Mary High School. He’s also in his first season as an assistant on the boys’ basketball team. Liebl is a Warehouse Material Coordinator with TransCanada.  Liebl and his wife, Amanda, reside in Dell Rapids with their three children, Joshua, Kate, and Samuel.

Liebl will be inducted along with Sara (Deckert) Stahlecker and Joel Harris.  USD track and field is hosting their annual Dakota Realty Alumni Meet prior to the Hall of Honor induction.  Field events of the alumni meet will start at 10:45 a.m. and the running events at noon.

Quarrier Girls Win Third Straight

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls won their third straight game on Monday, January 11th, at Dell Rapids High School.  The Quarriers defeated the Lennox Orioles 58-45.  Dell Rapids led at every quarter break in the game.

The Quarriers held a slight two-point lead at the end of the first quarter at 14-12.  The lead for Dell Rapids grew to six points by halftime at 29-23.  Dell Rapids opened up the third quarter on a 6-0 run and led by 12 points early in the third quarter.  The Orioles would get the lead into single digits a couple of times in the quarter, but Dell Rapids ended the third quarter ahead by 13 at 46-33.  Each team scored 12 points in the final quarter.

Three players scored in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Mikaela Stofferahn had 17 points.  Emma Paul finished with 13 points, and Averi Pankonen added 10 points.  Jordan Kruse led Lennox with 16 points.

Dell Rapids (6-3) will face Andes Central/Dakota Christian at the Hanson Classic in Mitchell at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 16th.

Two Quarrier Wrestlers Place in Brandon

NewQuarrierLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers placed two wrestlers at the Dan Pansch/Jesse James Invitational held in Brandon on Saturday, January 9th.

Ben Cavigielli finished 2-3 for the tournament in the 195-pound class and placed 6th.  Lathon Gorospe finished the day 4-2 in the 220-pound class and placed 4th.

Head coach Craig Jorgensen said, “Lathon and Ben wrestled well in one of the toughest tournaments we will have on our schedule.  Lathon had big wins over Payton Smith of Canton, Marshal Simons of Huron and Kreg Kepplinger of Bon Homme.  Lathon is wrestling aggressive and has really worked on cutting down on mistakes on the mat.  Lathon has started the year out great and will continue to improve.  Ben put together a great tournament.  He defeated Patric Sproles from O’Gorman by fall.  Sproles beat Ben earlier this year.  He also defeated Hunter Shamatt from Brandon.  He is starting to open it up and it’s paying off.  Our other wrestlers had a good day but didn’t place.  We had a couple tight matches that could have went either way.  We have to get more aggressive in those matches for them to come out in our favor.”

The Quarriers will participate in the their third Dak-12 meet of the year on Thursday, January 14th, in Vermillion and then will wrestle at the Tri-Valley Tournament on Saturday, January 16th.

Quarrier Boys Cruise to Third Straight Win

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys picked up their third win in a row and sixth overall as they cruised to a 62-34 win over the Chamberlain Cubs on Friday, January 8th, at Chamberlain.

Dell Rapids outscored Chamberlain in every quarter and also held the Cubs to single digits in two quarters.  The Quarriers held a six-point lead early in the game at 21-15 after the first quarter.  Chamberlain was only able to score six points in the second quarter, and Dell Rapids pushed their lead to 33-21 at halftime.  The Quarriers added five more points to their lead by the end of the third quarter at 49-32.  The Cubs only scored two points in the final quarter as the Quarries added 13 more points.

Two players scored in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Ty Hoglund finished with 30 points, and Mason Peter had 12 points.  Jeffrey Schuch and Mason Schmidt both had seven points apiece.  Sam White pulled down eight rebounds, and Hoglund had seven rebounds.  Hoglund also had five steals.

Dell Rapids (6-1) will host undefeated Sioux Falls Christian on Tuesday, January 12th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Comeback Falls Short Against Lake Preston

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys comeback fell short on Friday, January 8th, to the Lake Preston Divers at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Lake Preston led by four points at the end of the first quarter 11-7.  The Divers extended their lead to 20-13 at halftime.  Lake Preston held their largest lead at 18 points with 3:23 to go in the third quarter, but that’s when the Cardinals started their comeback.  The Cardinals scored the final seven points of the third quarter and closed the gap to 35-27.  St Mary got within one point with 4:19 left in the game at 38-37 after a 10-3 run.  However, Lake Preston finished the game on a 16-4 run to pull away for the victory.

St Mary shot 32% (14-44) from the field, 46% (5-11) from three-point area, and 73% (8-11) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals pulled down 41 rebounds as a team, but turned the ball over 28 times.

Connor Libis finished with 16 points in the game.  Noah Fiegen had 15 points, 10 rebounds and two assists.  Luke Brown tossed in six points.

St Mary (1-7) will host Parker on Tuesday, January 12th.
