Schuch Leads Quarrier Boys Past Vermillion

NewDRLogoJeffrey Schuch had one of his best games of the season to lead the Dell Rapids Quarriers past the Vermillion Tanagers 72-60 on Thursday, January 26th, in Vermillion.  Schuch finished with 27 points, 20 rebounds, four assists, three steals and five blocks.

Dell Rapids had a quick 7-0 run to start the game and never let go of the lead the entire game.  Every time Vermillion went on a run to get within striking distance, the Quarriers had an answer.  Dell Rapids finished the first quarter with an 18-9 lead and maintained that through most of the game.  The Quarriers led 36-25 at halftime and 55-45 at the end of the third quarter.

Three other players, along with Schuch, finished in double figures.  Tanner Heim also had a double-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds and four assists.  Mason Peter finished with 12 points and five rebounds.  Sheldon Siemonsma added 11 points.  Carson Rentz also dished out four assists.  The Quarriers finished the game shooting 49% (28-57) in the game.

Dell Rapids (9-2) travels to Flandreau to play Region 3A foe the Fliers on Monday, January 30th.  The game will be broadcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Hold Off Vermillion for Sixth Straight Win

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers held off a furious rally late in the game by the Vermillion Tanagers to win their sixth straight game and eighth out of their last nine on Thursday, January 26th, in Vermillion.

Both offenses were streaky through the first three quarters of the game.  The Tanagers raced out to a 7-1 lead early in the game, but Dell Rapids answered with a 9-0 run to close out the first quarter for a 10-7 lead.  Vermillion started the second quarter with another run.  The Tanagers went on a 7-2 run to take a 14-12 lead, but once again the Quarriers answered.  Dell Rapids finished the half on a 12-2 run to lead 24-16 at halftime.

Vermillion again started the third quarter with a little run to pull within three points at 26-29.  Again the Quarriers had an answer to close out the third quarter to push the lead back to eight points by the end of the quarter at 34-26.  Multiple times Vermillion was able to cut the lead in half in the fourth quarter.  The Tanagers trailed 41-45 and then again 47-51 late in the fourth.  Vermillion pulled within two points at 50-52, but Emma Paul knocked down two free throws with :06.1 left on the clock to make it a four point game at 54-53.  Madisen Martinez made a three-point shot with just a couple of seconds on the clock, but the Tanagers were out of timeouts, and the Quarriers did not inbound the ball and let the clock run out for the 54-53 win.

Jayda Knuppe led the Quarriers with 21 points and six rebounds in the game.  Emma Paul added nine points and six rebounds.  Kali Graham added eight points, and Arial Hoffman finished with seven points.  Graham and Hoffman both pulled down four rebounds in the game.

Dell Rapids (10-4) will play in the Dak-12 Conference Classic on Saturday, January 28th, in Dell Rapids.  The Quarriers are the #3 seed and will play #4 West Central at around 5:00 p.m.  All the games of the Dak-12 Conference Classic will be broadcast on Big Sioux Media.  First game starts at 10:00 a.m.

Quarrier Wrestling Splits at Dak-12 at Tri-Valley

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team won and lost a dual at the latest Dak-12 meet at Tri-Valley High School on Thursday, January 26th.  The Quarriers defeated Tri-Valley 39-28, but fell to West Central 46-36.

Brayden Gee, Scott Warwick, James Lueders, and Nick Palmer all picked up two wins on the night.  Lueders also earned his 100th career win as a Quarrier wrestler in the meet.

Dell Rapids will be at the Brookings Tournament at the Swiftel Center on Saturday, January 28th.

Quarrier Boys Win Physical Game Against EPJ

DRvsEPJ_BBB_1-21-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers ground out a 70-58 win over the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies in a physical game on Saturday, January 21st, in Dell Rapids.  Dell Rapids went to the free-throw line 29 times in the game.

The Huskies held a one-point 18-17 lead at the end of a back and forth first quarter.  However, the Quarriers outscored the Huskies 20-10 in the second quarter for a 37-28 halftime lead.  Dell Rapids was able to add another point to that lead by the end of the third quarter at 55-45.  Dell Rapids outscored Elk Point-Jefferson again in the fourth quarter 15-13 for the win.

The Quarriers only shot 36% (22-61) from the field, 40% (6-15) from three-point area, and 69% (20-29).  Dell Rapids also had 44 team rebounds, nine assists, eight steals, and only turned the ball over eight times.

Three players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Sheldon Siemonsma led the scoring attack with 20 points and also pulled down six rebounds.  Jeffrey Schuch finished with another double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.  Schuch also had four blocked shots.  Austin Ellingson finished with 18 points in the game, 17 of those in the first half, and also had six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.  Mason Schmidt and Mason Peter both finished with seven points each.

The Quarriers have now put together a three-game winning streak and have an overall record of 8-2.  Dell Rapids will travel to Vermillion on Thursday, January 26th.  Big Sioux Media will have a link to the video stream from Red Eye Sports.

Quarrier Girls Win Fifth in a Row

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers won their fifth game in a row with a 67-45 win over the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Saturday, January 21st, in Dell Rapids.  This was also the Quarriers’ seventh win out of their last eight games.

After a 10-10 tie with 2:15 to go in the first quarter, the Quarriers closed out the quarter on a 6-2 run to grab a 16-12 lead at end of the quarter.  The Quarriers would continue to expand on the lead from that forward.  Dell Rapids extended the lead to 28-22 at halftime.  The Quarrier offense picked up in the third quarter scoring 20 points.  Dell Rapids was able to push the lead to 48-34 by the end of the third quarter.  Dell Rapids then outscored Elk Point-Jefferson 19-11 in the final quarter on their way to the victory.

Four players scored in double figures for the Quarriers.  Emma Paul led all scorers with 17 points.  Arial Hoffman finished the game with 14 points, Jayda Knuppe tallied 13 points in the contest, and Kaylee Henned added 11 points.

The Quarriers (9-4) travel to Vermillion to play the Tanagers in a double header.  Big Sioux Media will have a link to the webcast by Red Eye Sports.

Quarrier Wrestling Places Ninth in Dak-12

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarriers traveled to Lennox for the Dak-12 Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, January 21st.  Dell Rapids finished ninth with a total of 60.0 points.  Beresford/Alcester-Hudson finished first with a score of 170.0 points.  Canton placed second with 168.5 points, and Lennox was third with 145.0 points.

The Quarriers had three wrestlers finish in the top four of their respective weight class.  Zach McKee finished fourth in the 113-pound weight class.  Ben Cavigielli also placed fourth in the 220-pound weight class, and James Lueders finished second in the 152-pound weight class.

Dell Rapids travels to Tri-Valley for the Dak-12 Meet #5 on Tuesday, January 24th.

Cardinal Girls Finish Third in DVC Tourney

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals avenged an earlier loss to the Colman-Egan Hawks on Saturday, January 21st, in Colman.  The Cardinals earned a 47-40 to finish third at the Dakota Valley Conference tournament.  Colman-Egan had beaten St Mary 46-29 on December 23rd at the Entringer Classic.

The first quarter proved to be a very low scoring quarter as the two teams combined for just nine points.  St Mary had a 6-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Both teams then scored 12 points each in the second quarter, and the Cardinals took an 18-15 lead into hafltime after Jackie Wolles hit a three-pointer to end the half.  The Cardinals were able to push their lead to ten at 34-24 by the end of the third quarter.  The Hawks outscored St Mary 16-13, but the Cardinals hung on for the win.

Two players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Sydney Cook led the way with 15 points.  Wolles ended the game with 14 points.  Kennedi Mullaney added nine points, and Ella Heinitz had six points.

St Mary (6-8) will travel to Baltic to take on the Bulldogs on Monday, January 23rd.

Cardinal Boys Take Fifth at DVC Tourney

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals won the consolation championship and placed fifth after a 59-52 win over the Deubrook Area Dolphins at the Dakota Valley Conference tournament in Colman on Saturday, January 21st.  The Cardinals finished with two wins at the tournament.

Deubrook held an eight point lead late in the first quarter, but the Cardinals were able to pull within a point at 16-15 at the break.  St Mary then outscored the Dolphins 10-7 in the second quarter for a 25-23 halftime lead.  The Cardinals extended the lead to five points by the end of the third quarter at 38-33, and then St Mary outscored Deubrook 21-19 in the final quarter for the win.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 20-45 (44%) from the field, 6-13 (46%) from the three-point area, and 13-21 (62%) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had 35 team rebounds and only turned the ball over eight times.

Luke Brown and Connor Libis both finished with 20 points in the game.  Brown scored 14 straight for the Cardinals in the fourth quarter.  Libis finished with four assists, and Brown had three rebounds.  Zach Geraets had six points and five rebounds.  Garret Frost also had six points along with three rebounds.  Logan Gaspar led the team with seven rebounds.

St Mary (7-6) will host Canistota on Friday, January 27th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Winning Streak Continues for Quarrier Girls

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers pushed their winning streak to four with a 72-54 win over the Sioux Valley Cossacks on Friday, January 20th.  Not only was this the fourth win in a row, it was the Quarriers sixth in their last seven games.

After the score was tied 10-10, the Quarriers finished out the first quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 22-10 lead after the first quarter.  Dell Rapids was able to increase the lead to 37-20 by halftime.  Sioux Valley made a couple of runs in the second half, but every time the Cossacks got the lead under 10 points, the Quarriers had an answer.

Emma Paul and Jayda Knuppe both finished the game with 21 points and seven rebounds each.  Arial Hoffman had nine points, Kaylee Hennen had eight points, and Aspen Hansen finished with seven points.

Dell Rapids (8-4) will host Elk Point-Jefferson as part of a double header with the boys on Saturday, January 21st.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Beat Estelline for Third Time

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals beat the Estelline Redmen for the third time this season.  The Cardinals won 63-15 at the Dakota Valley Conference tournament in Colman on Friday, January 20th.

The Cardinal defense held Estelline to single-digit scoring in each of the quarters.  St Mary out scored 24-3 in the first quarter and just kept rolling the remainder of the game.  The Cardinals led 38-11 at halftime and 44-13 at the end of the third quarter.

St Mary shot 25-57 (44%) from the field, 9-22 (41%) from three-point area, and 5-8 (63%) from the free throw line.  The Cardinals had 40 team rebounds, 12 assists, 16 steals, and four 22 Estelline turnovers in the game.

The Cardinal offense had a very balanced scoring attack.  Austin Welbig had 12 points and four rebounds.  Luke Brown also finished with 12 points along with five rebounds and five steals.  Connor Libis added 11 points and six assists.  Jason Cook and Max Herber both finished with eight points each.  Garret Frost and Herber each had six rebounds.

St Mary (6-6) will face Deubrook Area in the consolation championship of the DVC Tournament at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21st, in Colman.
