Dell Rapids Youth Baseball Places Well in MinnDak Tourneys

Four of nine Dell Rapids teams took home first or second place in the 2017 MinnDak “End-of-the-Year” tournaments Friday, July 7th, through Sunday, July 9th.  The Midget tournament was held in Humboldt, and the Pee Wee tournament was held in Colton.

Dell Rapids had three Pee Wee teams play in the Gold Bracket and three teams play in the Bronze Bracket.  Dell Rapids T&C and Dell Rapids ERC competed in a very exciting back-and-forth championship game in Colton.  The game ended with T&C taking first place and ERC finishing second.  The Dells Nursing and Rehab Center team placed first in the Bronze Bracket also in Colton.

Dell Rapids youth baseball had one Midget team play in the Gold Bracket and two teams play in the Silver Bracket.  Dell Rapids Jody’s Collision played their way to a second place finish in Humboldt.

Dell Rapids had three teams play in Midgets (ages 11-12), six teams play in Pee Wees (ages 9-10), four teams in the Transition League (ages 7-8), and five teams play in Coach Pitch (ages 6&U) in the 2017 baseball season.  The MinnDak League consists of teams from Baltic, Crooks/Colton, Dell Rapids, Flandreau, Garretson, Hills/Beaver Creek, and Humboldt.

Dell Rapids Legion Baseball Goes 5-1 in 5 Day Stretch

DellsBaseballLogoThe Dell Rapids Legion baseball team played six games in a five day stretch and finished with a 5-1 record over that time.  The six games included a home game against Hartford/Humboldt, and away game at McCook/Montrose, and then four games at the Milt Simons Tournament at Harmodon Park in Sioux Falls.

Dell Rapids started the string of games with a 13-3 win over Hartford/Humboldt at Rickeman Field on Wednesday, June 28th.  Prior to the game, the team hosted the first ever “Veteran’s Day at the Ballpark”.  On the next night, Dell Rapids traveled to McCook/Montrose and earned a 7-3 victory.  The win ended a 15-game winning streak for McCook/Montrose.

Dell Rapids then took their 12-0 record to Sioux Falls for the Milt Simons Tournament on Friday, June 30th, through Sunday, July 2nd.  Dell Rapids picked up a 2-0 win on Friday in the opening round of pool play against Sioux Falls Post 15 West.  They followed that with another pool-play win against Winner/Colome by a score of 6-1 on Saturday.  Dell Rapids also won their third pool play game to finish with a 3-0 record.  The final win came against Aberdeen by a score of 19-12 on Saturday.  The 3-0 pool play record put Dell Rapids into the semifinals on Sunday morning.  West Central handed Dell Rapids their first loss of the season by a score of 6-3.

Dell Rapids (14-1) will host Tabor in a double-header on Monday, July 3rd, at Rickeman Field.

Dell Rapids 14U Softball Wins Tony Tournament

On Sunday, June 25th, the Dell Rapids 14U softball team traveled to Lake Benton for the 7th Annual Tony Tournament.  The tournament for U14 was set up as a true round robin tournament.  Dell Rapids played a series of three games.  The tournament was compiled of wins, losses, and points scored.   At the end of the rainy day, Dell Rapids took first place!  Kylie Bittner lead the team in pitching with 17 strikeouts and only one walk in the tournament.  Top batting averages were Makayla Duinkerken and Bittner with an .833 average.  Kenize Garry, Cora Alderson, and Autumn Tomes all had an .800 average, and Leigha Lacey finished with a .667 batting average. Tony Awards were given to one girl each game for the following:  Garry for her outstanding skills at 1st base, Autumn Tomes for her two triples she hit in one game, and Lacey for some great plays she made playing catcher.

Mudcats Beat PBR at ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’

MudcatsLogoThe Dell Rapids Mudcats beat Dell Rapids PBR 7-3 at the annual “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” night at Rickeman Field on Friday, June 23rd.  The annual game between the two Dell Rapids amateur teams kicks off the Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce Quarry Days celebration.

The Mudcats scored first on an RBI double by Nate Henry to score Jimmy Bauer.  Henry later scored on a wild pitch to give the Mudcats a 2-0 lead they wouldn’t lose.  The Mudcats scored three more times to lead 5-0 after four innings.  PBR got on the board when Ryan Geraets scored on an error.  PBR was able to cut the lead to 5-2 after the top of the fifth inning.  Mark Houck hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead to 7-2.  Beau Behrend had an RBI single for PBR in the top of the ninth. Colin Karst earned the win for the Mudcats pitching all nine innings.  Karst gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out four.  Houck was 2-3 in the game with the home run and two runs scored.  Jared Hegdahl had an RBI hit as well in the game for the Mudcats.  Zane Schumacher went 2-4 for PBR.

The Mudcats travel to Madison on Tuesday, June 27th.  Dell Rapids PBR will play Flandreau on Sunday, June 25th and then Salem on Wednesday, June 28th.

Dell Rapids Legion Moves to 9-0

DellsBaseballLogoThe Dell Rapids Legion baseball team is enjoying a great start to their season.  Dell Rapids now is 9-0 on the year after a 6-2 win at Aurora on Thursday, June 22nd.

Dell Rapids scored three times in the top of the first inning highlighted by a triple by Brett Mogen.  Aurora got one run back in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 3-1 after the first inning.  Aurora scored a second run in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 3-2.  Dell Rapids then scored a run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings for the win.

Nate McKee picked up two hits for Dell Rapids in the game.  Casey Hansen, Mogen, Elijah Story, and Adrian Juba all had a hit.  Mogen had two RBIs, and Story and Seth Andersen each had an RBI.

Mogen pitched the complete game giving up two runs, both unearned, on three hits while striking out 13 batters in the game.

Dell Rapids will host Hartford/Humboldt on Wednesday, June 28th.  Prior to the game will be “Veteran’s Night at the Ballpark”.

Dell Rapids Legion Baseball Remains Undefeated

DellsBaseballLogoAfter trailing 4-2 in the second inning, the Dell Rapids Legion baseball team scored the final 12 runs of the game to earn a 14-4 win over Madison on Monday, June 19th, to move to 7-0 on the season.

Both teams scored a run in the first, but Madison struck for three runs in the second inning take take a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.  Dell Rapids scored one run in the second to cut the lead to 4-2.  Dell Rapids then scored three runs in the third, three more runs in the fifth, and then six runs in the sixth inning to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Nate McKee and Brett Mogen both finished the game 3-3 at the plate with an RBI.  Eric Klein had two doubles in the game and drove in four runs.  Matt Gillogly had a three-run home run, his second home run of the season.  Josh Roemen, Keegan Miller, Ethan Brobjorg, and Carter Gullickson all had hits in the game as well.

Elijah Story started the game on the mound for Dell Rapids.  Story pitched two innings giving up four runs, two earned, on three hits while walking two and striking out one.  Gullickson pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief while only giving up one hit and striking out four batters.  Mogen pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up just one hit and struck out one batter.

Dell Rapids will host Lennox on Wednesday, June 21st, and then travel to Aurora on Thursday, June 22nd.

Dell Rapids 14U Softball 2nd in Last Two Tournaments

The past two weekends have been very busy for the U14 DR Quarriers softball team. They played in the Denny Sanford Memorial Day Tournament the weekend of June 2nd in Sioux Falls, and took 2nd place! They also played in the Brookings Softball Tournament on June 9th weekend and took 2nd place. Kylie Bittner led the team with pitching a total of 370 pitches over the weekends. She pitched a total of 288 stikes, and 82 balls; she struck out 25 batters and walked six. The MVP’s picked by the opposing teams were Kylie Bittner (for her pitching), Haileigh Barnhart (for her amazing diving catch in left field), and Leigha Lacey (for her outstanding catcher abilities) in the Denny Sanford Tourney. The MVP’s from the Brookings tournament were Cara Rice (for her awesome team spirit), Leigha Lacey (for her hustle at catcher), Kenzie Garry (for her long stride at 1st base), Autumn Tomes (for her glove playing 3rd base), and Kylie Bittner (for her pitching).

The DR Quarriers bats were on fire these weekends! The leaders were Kenzie Garry and Kylie Bittner with a .818 batting average on the weekends. Leigha Lacey, Autum Tomes, and Cora Alderson had a .727 batting averages; Cara Rice had a .636 batting average!

12U Softball First in Brookings, 10U Places 3rd

The Dells Electric 12U fast pitch team and the Dell Rapids 10U team played in a tournament in Brookings on Saturday, June 10th, and Sunday, June 11th.  The Dells Electric team won the 12U tournament while the Dell Rapids 10U team placed third in their tournament.

Dells Electric played four straight games in pool play on Saturday. In the opening game, Brookings Red defeated Dells Electric 11-10.  Dells Electric bounced back in the second game defeating Brookings Blue 14-5.  Dells Electric earned another victory in their third game by defeating Jackson, MN 22-15.  In the final game of the day, Tea defeated Dells Electric 8-2.  Dells Electric finished pool play with a 2-2 record and were the number three seed in bracket play on Sunday.

For the first game of bracket play on Sunday, Dells Electric was matched up again with Tea.  This time Dells Electric got the win 8-2 moving them into the championship game against Brookings Red.  Dells Electric found themselves trailing 6-0 heading into the second inning.  They were able to close the game to 6-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning and then scored three more runs for the 8-6 come-from-behind win in the championship game for the title.

The Dell Rapids 10U team also played in games on Saturday and Sunday.  Dell Rapids split their pool play games on Saturday.  They defeated Brookings Black 15-1, but lost to Brookings White 11-10.  The final pool play game for Dell Rapids was on Sunday, and they defeated Jackson, MN 15-4 to finish 2-1 in pool play.  Dell Rapids won their quarterfinal game against Brookings Blue 13-2.  Brookings Red handed Dell Rapids an 8-5 loss sending Dell Rapids to the 3rd/4th place game.  In that game, Dell Rapids defeated Brookings Black for the second time in the tournament, this time 13-7 for third place.

Three from Dell Rapids Headed to State Rodeo Finals

Three rodeo athletes from Dell Rapids qualified for the 2017 South Dakota High School Rodeo Association State Finals.  The state finals will be held on Thursday, June 15th, through Saturday, June 17th, in Belle Fourche.

Tyra Harrington qualified for the state finals in two events. Tyra had the top score in Barrel Racing with 17.00 points and the top score in Pole Bending with 18.00 points at the East 2 Regional in Watertown on June 10th.  Tana Harrington also qualified in Barrel Racing with 8.00 points and Pole Bending with 4.00 points at regionals.  Cheyenne Adams will compete in Team Roping at the state finals after having 6.00 points at regionals.

Area Athletes and Coaches at SD All-Star Football Game

A Dell Rapids athlete, a St Mary coach, and a former St Mary student athlete were recognized at the 2017 South Dakota All-Star Game in Vermillion on Saturday, June 10th.

Dell Rapids Quarrier graduate Hunter Hansen was selected to play in the game on Saturday afternoon for the Blue Team.  Hansen finished the game with one interception which returned for 14 yards.  He also had two tackles in the game.  The Blue Team defeated the Red Team 37-6 in the game.

MichelSDAllStar_2017Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal assistant football coach Casey Michel was recognized as the 2017 Assistant Coach of the Year for class 9B.  Matt Christensen (Brandon Valley – 11AAA), Travis Carpenter (Mitchell – 11AA), Joe Bundy (Madison – 11A), Griffith Van Leur (Bridgewater/Emery-Ethan – 11B), John King (Gregory – 9AA), Jeremy Crisp (Colman-Egan – 9A), and Dave Mudder (Garretson – 8th Grade and Under) were also Assistant Coaches of the Year for 2017.

Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal graduate Josh Brown was awarded the All-Star Scholarship Award at the game.  Scott Senftner of Sully Buttes was also a recipient.
