Season Ends for Cardinal Girls in Region 4B Quarterfinals

DRSM LogoThe 2017-2018 season came to an end for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Tuesday, February 20th in Huron.  The Cardinals fell to the Ethan Rustlers 65-26 in the quarterfinals of the Region 4B tournament at the Huron Arena.

St Mary trailed by only seven points, 16-9, after the first quarter, but had trouble on the offensive side of the ball the remainder of the game.  The Rustlers put some distance between themselves and the Cardinals in the second quarter by outscoring St Mary 21-6.  Ethan led 37-12 at halftime.  The Rustlers continued to grow the lead in the second half outscoring the Cardinals 28-12.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 29% from the field, 22% from three-point area, and 75% from the free-throw line.  Ethan finished the game shooting 66% from the field.  St Mary had a total of 12 team rebounds and were forced into 21 turnovers.

Ella Heinitz had a team-high 14 points and two steals.  Clare Klein had four points and two steals.  Cassy Geraets, Maddie Schwebach, Sydney Cook, and Cassie Mullaney all finished with two points each.

St Mary finished the season with a record of 10-12.

Cardinal Girls Advance to Region 4B Second Round

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls cruised to an opening round win in the Region 4B tournament on Monday, February 19th.  The Cardinals defeated the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders 63-30 in front of their home crowd at St Mary High School.  Every varsity player for the Cardinals got into the stat book in some way on the night.

St Mary scored on their first three shot attempts and never failed to lead in the game.  The Cardinals led 15-8 after the first quarter.  They were able to grow the lead to 14 points by halftime at 32-18.  St Mary kept rolling in the second half as they increased the lead to 23 points by the end of third quarter at 49-26.  The Raiders were held to just four points in the final quarter by the Cardinal defense as the St Mary offense scored 14 more points.

Three players finished in double figures in points for the Cardinals.  Ella Heinitz had 16 points, nine rebounds, five steals, and five assists.  Sydney Cook added 15 points, six rebounds and two assists.  Maddie Schwebach ended with 12 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  Cassie Mullaney recorded nine points in the game.  Courtney Brown had four points, and Cassy Geraets, Carly Maxwell, and Clare Klein all had two points.  Karlie Klein had one point and three rebounds.  Adyn Heinricy had one rebound and one assist.  Tana Harrington had two rebounds, and Addy Gilbert had a rebound.

St Mary (10-11) will advance to play the Ethan Rustlers at 6:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Region 4B tournament.  The game will be held at the Huron Arena.

Lealand Randel Signs with DSU

Another Dell Rapids senior has signed a letter of intent to play collegiate sports next year.   Dell Rapids senior Lealand Randel signed a letter of intent to play baseball with the Dakota State University Trojans.  The right-handed pitcher has played for the Dell Rapids High School club baseball team and the Dell Rapids legion team.

Lealand will join his brother Trey at Dakota State who is currently a pitcher for the Trojans.

Region 1A Host Dell Rapids Sends Six to State Wrestling Tourney

DRWrestle2018Region_1The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team had six wrestlers qualify for state at the Region 1A tournament held at Dell Rapids High School on Saturday, February 17th.  Jacob Vogel, Canyon Lowman, Max Lamer, Gage Carr, Ben Cavigielli, and Nick Palmer will wrestle at the 2018 State A Wrestling Tournament on February 23rd and 24th at the Premier Center in Sioux Falls.

Watertown won the team title finishing with 207.5 points.  Madison placed second with 130.5 points.  Brookings was third followed by Sioux Falls O’Gorman, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Dell Rapids, West Central, and Tea Area. DRWrestle2018Region_2

Vogel qualified for state in the 106 pound division.  Vogel placed third on the day going 3-1 overall.  Lowman was a second place finisher and state qualifier in the 113 pound division.  Lowman finished 2-1 on the day.  Lamer placed fourth and qualified for state in the 132 pound class.  Lamer posted a 2-2 record.  Carr also placed second and qualified for state in the 152 pound class with a 2-1 record.  Cavigielli qualified for state with a third place finish in the 220 pound class.  Cavigielli finished 3-1 on the day.  Palmer also qualified for state with a fourth place finish in the 285 pound division with a 2-2 record.

Other wrestlers for the Quarriers at the Region 1A tournament were Andrew Weiland (0-2 in 120 pound class), Zach McKee (1-2 in 126 pound class), Brayden Gee (1-2 in 136 pound class), Trevon Cross (0-2 in 145 pound class), Trystan Stahl (1-2 in 16o pound class), Mitchell Klinkenborg (1-2 in 182 pound class), and Lincoln Richeal (1-2 in 195 pound class).

Ten in a Row for Quarrier Boys

In another tough, late-season, Dak-12 match-up, the Dell Rapids Quarriers had to come from behind to get a 65-57 win over the Lennox Orioles on Friday, February 16th at Dell Rapids High School.  It was the final regular season game for the Quarriers.

Lennox threw everything they had at the Quarriers in the game.  With Dell Rapids leading 9-7 with 2:20 in the opening quarter, the Orioles went on a 7-2 run to close out the quarter for a 14-11 lead.  Both teams held leads in the second quarter.  Lennox led by as many as four points, and Dell Rapids led by as many as five points, but it was Lennox that held a slight one-point advantage at 31-30 at halftime.

Dell Rapids got the offense rolling in the third quarter while locking down Lennox defensively.  The Quarriers erased the first-half deficit and got ahead by as many as 15 points in the quarter.  Dell Rapids outscored Lennox 21-7 over the entire quarter and led 51-38 heading into the final quarter.  The Quarriers still end a 12-point lead at 53-41 with 6:04 to play in the game.  Lennox got the lead down to seven points at 53-46 by the 4:45 mark of the game.  The Orioles were able to get within six points at 57-51 with 1:43 to play, but Dell Rapids was able to make their free throws down the stretch to not allow Lennox to get any closer.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 49% from the field, 42% from three-point area, and 75% from the free-throw line.  They had a total of 30 team rebounds, 18 team assists, and only turned the ball over seven times.

Three players finished in double figures.  Carson Rentz led the team in scoring with 17 points.  Rentz also had six assists and four rebounds.  Jeffrey Schuch nearly had a triple-double in the game.  Schuch had 15 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and five blocked shots.  Mason Schmidt also finished the game with 15 points and five rebounds.

Dell Rapids finished the regular season on a ten-game winning streak and a 16-4 overall record.  The Region 3A tournament will begin on Tuesday, February 27th.

Regular Season Ends with Winning Record For Cardinal Boys

DRSMvsBal_BBB_2-16-18The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals will have a winning record for the first time since the 2007-2008 season thanks to a 65-60 win over the Baltic Bulldogs on Friday, February 16th at Baltic High School.  The win also ended a short two-game losing streak.

St Mary offense was on fire to start the game.  The Cardinals scored 21 first-quarter points on their way to a 21-10 lead.  The lead grew to 13 points by halftime at 36-23.  St Mary’s offense continued to roll through the first three minutes of the third quarter when their lead grew to 20 points at 49-29 with 5:00 to go in the quarter.  Baltic then made a run of their own.  The Bulldogs went on a 12-0 run to cut the lead to eight points at 49-41.  St Mary ended the third quarter with a 53-44 lead.  The Cardinals got their lead back to double digits at 60-48.  Baltic again made a run, this time a 10-2 run, to pull within four points with :30 to play.  The Bulldogs again had it down to four points at 64-40 with :07.5 points, but a late free throw sealed the victory for the Cardinals.

Three players finished in double figures.  Luke Brown had 19 points and two blocked shots.  Connor Libis also had 19 points along with five rebounds and two steals.  Max Herber finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.  Sam Muston led Baltic with 19 points and 11 rebounds.  Jon Wilhelmsen added 18 points for the Bulldogs.

St Mary finishes the regular season with an 11-9 record.  The Cardinals will begin Region 4B tournament play on Monday, February 26th.

Cardinal Girls Rally in Fourth on Senior Night

DRSMvsHendricks_GBB_2-15-18A fourth quarter rally gave the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals a win on Senior Night on Thursday, February 15th.  Playing in their final regular season game of the year at home, the Cardinals used a 20-6 fourth quarter to defeat the Hendricks Grizzlies 47-41.

Neither team was able to get much of an advantage in the first half.  The two teams traded baskets over the first sixteen minutes.  The Cardinals had a slim 12-11 lead after the first quarter, and they were able to keep that one-point lead at 21-20 heading into halftime.

The Grizzlies has a big third quarter offensively and defensively.  They held St Mary to just six points and scored 15 points themselves to take a 35-27 lead into the fourth quarter.  The Grizzlies pushed the lead to 10 points at 39-29 with 6:40 to go in the game.  That’s when the Cardinals took over the game.  St Mary held Hendricks to just two points the remainder of the quarter while scoring 18 to get the win.

Ella Heinitz had 16 points in the win along with five rebounds.  Maddie Schwebach finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.

All three seniors had a solid game for the Cardinals.  Sydney Cook had nine points and eight rebounds.  Cassy Geraets added six points and seven rebounds.  Adyn Heinricy tallied three points and three rebounds.

The Cardinals finished the regular season with a record of 9-11.  The Region 4B Tournament will begin on Monday, February 19th.

Quarrier Girls End Regular Season with Loss to Madison

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team played their final regular season game in Madison on Thursday, February 15th.  The Madison Bulldogs snapped the Quarriers’ five-game win streak with a 48-43 win at Madison High School.

Dell Rapids got out to an early 4-0 lead in the first minutes of the game, but the offense only scored eight points in the first quarter.  Madison was able to take a 13-8 lead after the first period.  The Bulldog lead grew throughout the second quarter to as many as 11 points.  Madison led 25-17 at halftime.  Dell Rapids got the offense going in the third quarter scoring 17 points and tied the game at 34-34 heading into the final quarter.  The two teams went back and forth throughout the first few minutes, but Madison eventually pulled away late in the game for the five-point win.

The Quarriers only shot 24% from the field, 17% from three-point area, and 53% from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids had a total of 51 team rebounds, 19 of those offensive, and only turned the ball over six times.

Jayda Knuppe finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.  Emma Paul had eight points and 15 rebounds in the game.  Kaylee Hennen gave the team a spark with six points in the third quarter.  Aspen Hansen and Sydney Stofferahn both had five points each.  Stofferahn also had eight rebounds.

The Quarriers finish the regular season with a 14-6 record.  The Region 3A tournament begins on Tuesday, February 20th.

Hawks 2nd Half Leads to Win over Cardinals

DRSM LogoIn their final road game of the regular season, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team lost a Dakota Valley Conference game to the Colman-Egan Hawks 55-44 on Tuesday, February 13th, at Colman-Egan High School.  The score was tied seven times and there were 10 lead changes.

The first quarter went back and forth and was close throughout.  The Hawks ended the first quarter with a one-point lead at 14-13.  St Mary grabbed the lead in the second quarter.  The Cardinals outscored Colman-Egan 13-10 for a 26-24 halftime lead.  They took their largest lead of the game with 7:24 to go in the third quarter, however Colman-Egan regained the lead and led 38-36 heading into the final quarter.  The Hawks outscored St Mary 17-8 in the final quarter to pull away for the victory.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 38% from the field, but only 33% in the second half.  They were 36% from three-point area and 60% from the free-throw line.  St Mary was out rebounded 36-29 and had 17 turnovers.

Ella Heinitz led the team with 16 points and six rebounds.  Maddie Schwebach had 10 points and eight rebounds.  Sydney Cook finished with eight points, eight rebounds, and four blocked shots.  Clare Klein and Adyn Heinricy both had four points each.  Colman-Egan was led by Mackenzie Hemmer with 15 points and Haleigh Nicol and Braiden Westley both with 12 points each.

St Mary (8-11) will end the regular season at home on Senior Night against Hendricks, MN on Thursday, February 15th.

Quarriers Keep Streak Alive in Canton

It wasn’t easy, but the Dell Rapids Quarriers won their ninth straight game with an 84-67 win over the Canton C-Hawks on Monday, February 12th in Canton.  Dell Rapids, ranked #4 in the latest South Dakota Media poll, got all they could handle from a scrappy Canton team.  Carson Rentz also broke his own school record for made three-point shots in a game with nine in the contest.

Canton got the first quarter started and held a slim one-point lead at 5-4.  Dell Rapids went on a 9-0 run midway through the first quarter to get a 13-5 lead with 2:50 to play in the quarter.  The C-Hawks responded with a 5-2 run to close the gap at 15-10 to end the first quarter.  Canton then scored the first five points of the second quarter to tie the game at 15-15 with 7:05 to play in the first half.  The Dell Rapids defense then held Canton to just eight points the remainder of the quarter while the offense scored 23 points.  The Quarriers held a 38-23 lead at halftime.

Dell Rapids increased their lead to 22 points at 45-23 in the first two minutes of the third quarter.  They increased the lead to 23 points at 55-32 with 3:05 to go in the quarter.  Canton then found an offensive spurt as they closed out the quarter on an 18-5 run to cut the lead to 60-50 by the end of the third quarter.  Canton then scored the first basket of the fourth quarter to cut a 23-point lead down to eight points at 60-52.  The Quarriers were able to maintain a 12-to-15 point lead due to the three-point shooting of Rentz.  The Quarriers made seven free-throws in the final minute and a half while holding Canton to just one made field goal to close out the game for the victory.

Rentz led the team with 31 points in the game on a school-record nine made three-point shots and four free-throws.  Rentz also had five assists and three rebounds.  Mason Schmidt finished with 21 points and three rebounds.  Jeffrey Schuch recorded another double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.  He also dished out six assists and had three blocked shots.  Elijah Story had seven points and four assists.  Logan Heim had six points and seven rebounds.  Drew Van Regenmorter, while held scoreless, had eight assists and six rebounds.

Dell Rapids (15-4) will close out the regular season at home on Friday, February 16th when the host the Lennox Orioles.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
