Cardinal Girls Earn Road Win in Ramona

For the third game in a row, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team was on the road at Ramona on Thursday, December 19th.  The Cardinals came home with a 56-38 win over the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders.

The Cardinals started hot, jumping out to a 5-0 lead.  The Raiders responded with a 5-0 run of their own to tie the game at 5-5 with 4:30 to play in the first quarter.  St Mary took control of the game with a 10-0 run and ended the first quarter leading 15-7.  The Cardinals started the second quarter on a 7-2 run and eventually pushed the lead to 35-20 by halftime.  The defense held the Raiders in check in the third quarter as Oldham-Ramona/Rutland only scored six points in the quarter.  St Mary led 43-26 heading into the final quarter, and the Cardinals coasted to the win throughout the fourth quarter.

St Mary (2-1) will take to the road one more time on Saturday, December 20th.  The Cardinals will play Deuel at the Entringer Classic in Colman with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Two Road Wins to Start Season for Cardinal Boys

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team won their second straight road game to start the 2019-2020 season.  This time the Cardinals beat the Mitchell Christian Golden Eagles 56-26 on Tuesday, December 17th.

The Golden Eagles scored the first five points of the game for an early 5-0 lead, but the lead was short-lived for Mitchell Christian.  St Mary went on a 16-2 run the remainder of the quarter for a 16-7 lead after the first quarter.  The Cardinals grew the lead to 33-10 by halftime and never looked back.  St Mary outscored the Golden Eagles 23-16 in the second half to cruise to the victory.

Connor Libis led St Mary with 17 points.  Sam Palmer and Connar Kangas both finished with 11 points in the game.  Max Reynen and Joey Feiner both finished with eight points each for Mitchell Christian.

St Mary (2-0) will travel to Rutland to play the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders on Friday, December 20th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Post First Win of Season

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals picked up their first win of the season on the road against the Mitchell Christian Golden Eagles on Tuesday, December 17th.  The Cardinals earned a 59-54 victory.

The game was close all night long.  The Golden Eagles had a slight two point advantage at the end of the first quarter at 15-13.  The two teams ended the first half tied at 30-30.  The Cardinals opened the second half on a nine point run for a 39-30 lead.  Mitchell Christian responded with a 12-4 run to pull within a point, but the Cardinals got the last basket of the third quarter to lead 45-42 heading to the fourth quarter.  St Mary kept about a four point lead through much of the fourth quarter, but the Golden Eagles got a three-point basket to take a 54-53 with 2:29 left in the game.  The Cardinals finished the game on a 6-0 run for the win.

Ella Heinitz had a team-high 24 points for St Mary.  Courtney Brown added 15 points.  Audrey Hofer led Mitchell Christian with 27 points.

St Mary (1-1) will play their third road game in a row when the travel to Ramona to play the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders on Thursday, December 19th.

Cardinal Boys Grind Out Season Opening Win

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys found a way to grind out a 57-45 over the Colman-Egan Hawks on Friday, December 13th to open up the 2019-2020 basketball season.

After a back-and-forth first quarter, Colman-Egan found themselves leading 11-10 after a last-second three-point shot by Ty Hiller.  The Cardinals got into an offensive groove in the second quarter, scoring 24 points, and held a 34-29 lead at halftime.  The Hawks cut into the lead by the end of the third quarter as St Mary held a slim 41-38 lead.  Colman-Egan scored the first three points of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 41-41, but St Mary answered with a 12-0 to go ahead 53-41 to take the victory.

Connor Libis finished the game with 22 points for the Cardinals.  Sam Palmer added 17 points.  Colman-Egan was led by Dalton Voelker with 17 points.

St Mary (1-0) will travel to Mitchell to play Mitchell Christian on Tuesday, December 17th in a double-header with the girls.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Drop Close Game to Start Season

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team traveled to Colman to take on the Colman-Egan Hawks to start the 2019-2020 season on Friday, December 13th.  Colman-Egan put together a big enough rally in the second quarter to come away with a 56-43 win.

St Mary held a small two-point lead after the first quarter at 11-9.  The Hawks outscored the Cardinals 14-7 in the second quarter to take a 23-18 halftime lead.  St Mary pulled within two points at 33-31 with under a minute to play in the third quarter, but Colman-Egan scored the final basket for a 35-31 lead heading to the fourth quarter.  The Hawks outscored St Mary 21-12 in the final quarter to seal the victory.

Courtney Brown led St Mary with 16 points.  Ella Heinitz had 13 points, and Ella Griffin finished with nine points.  Sydney Klein had a team-high four rebounds to go along with five points.  Colman-Egan was led by Mackenzie Hemmer with 28 points, Braiden Westley with 15 points, and Josie Mousel with 12 points.

The Cardinals (0-1) will travel to Mitchell to play Mitchell Christian in a double-header with the boys on Tuesday, December 17th.

2019 Fall Sports Awards

Several Cardinal and Quarrier student athletes received recognition for their seasons during the 2019 fall sports season.

Eli Longville, Weston Geraets, Logan Wolles, and Connor Libis were Dakota Valley Conference All-Conference selections for the football season.  Payton Park was an honorable mention selection.  Longville was named Co-MVP for the conference this season.  Head coach of the St Mary Cardinals Ross Flemmer was named the 2019 DVC Coach of the Year.  Longville and Libis were also honorable mentions for the Argus Leader Elite 45 team.

Courtney Brown was a DVC All-Conference selection in volleyball this year.  Ella Heinitz was an honorable mention.

Paige Bunkers, Maggie Klein, and Brown were 2019 South Dakota All-State Cheer team selections.

For the Dell Rapids Quarriers, Logan Ellingson, Brayden Gee, Mason Goeken, Coby Maeschen, Noah Randall, Colin Rentz, Cody Schultz, Drew VanRegenmorter, and Tyler Wood were 2019 Dak-12 Conference All-Conference selections.  Carter Rentz and Landon Ruesink were honorable mentions.  Ellingson was also named to the Argus Leader Elite 45 team.  Maeschen was an honorable mention for the Elite 45 team.

Gabi Rus was a 3rd Team Dak-12 Conference selection in volleyball.  Mallory Haak was an honorable mention.

Hannah Heiberger, Olivia Godwin, and Katelyn North were 2019 South Dakota All-State Cheer team selections.

Raiders Rally for Region 4B Win over Cardinals

The Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders rallied late in the first set and then had a big rally in the second set on their way to a straight-set match win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Monday, November 4th in the opening round of the Region 4B tournament.  The Raiders won by set scores of 25-21, 25-11, and 25-18.

After an early 6-6 tie in the first set, the Raiders went on an 8-2 run for a 14-8 lead.  The Cardinals eventually tied the game at 17-17 and then took the lead at 18-17, but the Raiders closed out the first set on an 8-3 run for the win.

The second set went back and forth early.  The two teams were tied at 6-6.  Then the momentum from the late rally in the first set found the Raiders.  Oldham-Ramona/Rutland went on an 11-1 run for a 17-7 lead.  The Raiders cruised to the second set win at 25-11.

St Mary looked to keep the mach alive in the third set and got out to an early 8-5 lead.  The Raiders took a small lead at 12-10.  The Cardinals battled back to tie the game at 14-14 and then again at 16-16.  The Raiders, however, rallied for a four-point lead at 22-18, and then finished the match with three straight points after a timeout for the win.

The Cardinals finish their season with an overall record of 10-16.

Cardinals Fall Short Against Wolverines

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal football team fell to the Herreid/Selby Area Wolverines in the quarter final round of the 9B playoffs on Thursday, October 31st.  The Wolverines edged the Cardinals 48-38 to advance to the semifinals.

St Mary got on the board first after a touchdown run by Connor Libis and the two-point conversion by Weston Geraets on the first drive of the game.  The Wolverines pulled within two points with 3:41 to play in the opening quarter after a touchdown run by Wade Begeman.  The first quarter ended with St Mary leading 8-6.

On the first play of the second quarter, Libis connected with Geraets on a three-yard touchdown pass.  Libis and Geraets connected for the two-point conversion to give the Cardinals a 16-6 lead with 11:55 to play in the second quarter.  Trey Sayler scored a rushing touchdown for the Wolverines on their next possession, and the two-point conversion was good to pull Herreid/Selby Area within two points at 16-14.   The Wolverines took the lead later in the second quarter on a nine-yard run by Sayler.  Two two-point conversion was no good, but Herreid/Selby Area took the lead 20-16.  That’s where the score remained at halftime.

The Wolverines struck first in the third quarter on a 57-yard pass play giving Herreid/Selby Area a 26-16 lead early in the third quarter.  Libis found Geraets in the end zone on a five-yard pass with 7:55 to play in the third quarter.  The two-point conversion was good, and St Mary pulled within two points at 26-24.  Herreid/Selby Area answered right back on their next drive with a rushing touchdown.  Two two-point conversion failed, and the Wolverines led 32-24.  The score held at 32-24 heading into the final quarter.

Libis scored on a five-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter.  Libis then scored the two-point conversion to tie the game 32-32 with 11:53 to play.  The Wolverines regained the lead with a touchdown run by Clayton Randall with 8:13 to play.  The two-point conversion was good to make the score 40-32 in favor of the Wolverines.  Libis scored on a 34-yard run on the Cardinals’ next possession.  However, the two-point conversion was no good, and the Wolverines held a 40-38 lead.  Randall scored final big touchdown for Herreid/Selby Area with 1:47 to play.  The two-conversion was good to make it a two-score game at 48-38.

The Cardinals finished the game with 364 yards of total offense, 250 rushing yards and 114 passing yards.  Eli Longville had 18 carries for 153 yards.  Libis had 14 carries for 80 yards and three touchdowns.  Libis was also 11-18 passing for 114 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.  Longville had six catches for 98 yards.  Geraets had three catches for 16 yards and two touchdowns.  Geraets led the defense with 14 tackles.  Longville had 11 tackles, and Libis finished with nine tackles.

Head coach Ross Flemmer said, “The boys played hard Thursday night.  Herreid/Selby Area is a good team.  We had to overcome a lot of adversity early in the game and did.  We hung until the very end.  This was not just a great group of football players, but a great group of young men.  I’m proud to say I got the opportunity to coach them.”

St Mary’s 2019 season comes to an end with an overall record of 8-2.

Regular Season Ends in Loss for St Mary Volleyball

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team ended their 2019 regular season at Colman-Egan on Monday, October 28th.  The Hawks defeated St Mary in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-14, and 25-12.

Courtney Brown and Ella Heinitz both had eight kills.  Ella Griffin finished with five kills, and Jaycee Tebay had four kills.  Heinitz also had 10 set assists and five digs.  Griffin finished with nine set assists and four digs.  Brown and Maya Heinitz each had five digs.

The Cardinals end the regular season with a 10-15 record.  St Mary will begin the Region 4B tournament on Monday, November 4th.

Area Runners Finish Cross Country Season at State

Six runners from Dell Rapids St Mary and two from Dell Rapids competed in the 2019 South Dakota Cross Country meet on Saturday, October 26th in Huron.

The entire St Mary Cardinal boys team was able to compete in the state meet after winning the region title.  The Cardinals finished 7th as a team with a total of 79 points.  Burke won the boys title with 37 points.  Timber Lake was second with 45 points, and Platte-Geddes was third with 47 points.

Jacob Vogel placed fifth individually with a time of 17:38.00.  Seth Roemen (65th) had a time of 19:33.04.  Thomas Eining (74th) finished at 19:39.17.  Connor Libis (75th) had a time of 19:40.46, and Ryan Eining (94th) had a time of 20:08.10.

Addy Gilbert placed 57th for St Mary in the girls race with a time of 22:31.10.

Logan Anderson and Adisen Stadem competed for the Quarriers this year.  Anderson (109th) had a time of 19:31.91.  Stadem (51st) finished in a time of 21:26.02.
