Dell Rapids Legion Can’t Overcome Early Lead by Humboldt/Hartford

Humboldt/Hartford scored two runs in the bottom of the first and never trailed in the game as they defeated Dell Rapids 4-2 in Humboldt on Wednesday, July 7th.

Humboldt/Hartford got two runners on by a walk with two outs in the bottom of the first, and then came a two-run single for an early 2-0 lead.  Dell Rapids got a run back in the top of the second on three hits in the inning.  Josh Deknikker delivered the RBI hit to cut the lead to 2-1.  Humboldt/Hartford got another run in the bottom of the third again taking advantage of two walks and a wild pitch.  The fourth run came in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single to make the score 4-1.  Dell Rapids added another run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Brady Larson, but they couldn’t get a rally going in the seventh.

Larson had two hits and an RBI.  Caleb Kittleson also had two hits.  Deknikker had a hit and an RBI.  Landon Ruesink also had a hit.  Noah Swartwout pitched four innings allowing four earned runs on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts.  Jake Steineke pitched two innings walking one batter and striking out seven.

Five-Run Sixth Inning Lifts Dell Rapids 16U to Victory

Dell Rapids 16U scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift them to an 11-9 victory over Dakota Valley at home on Wednesday, July 7th.

Dakota Valley scored two times in the top of the first inning, but Dell Rapids responded with two of their own in the bottom of the inning.  Brayden Pankonen had an RBI double, and Will Jaton had an RBI single to tie the game.  Dakota Valley got another run in the top of the third, but Dell Rapids took the lead in the bottom of the inning.  Jaton, CJ Smith, and Joe Rechtenbaugh all had RBI singles to give Dell Rapids a 5-3 lead after three innings of play.

Dakota Valley put the pressure on Dell Rapids in the top of the fifth inning.  They scored five times to take an 8-5 lead.  Smith had an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 8-6.  Dakota Valley got another run in the top of the sixth to put them back in front by three at 9-6.

Dell Rapids then had their big inning.  John Mortrude had a two-run single.  Mortude then scored on an error to tie the game 9-9.  Pankonen had an RBI single to give Dell Rapids the lead again, and then Dylan Mathis had an RBI single to make a two-run advantage, 11-9, heading into the final inning.  Pankonen got three straight outs to save the victory.

Pankonen had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.  Jaton and Smith both had two hits and two RBIs.  Mortrude had a hit and two RBIs.  Mathis and Rechtenbaugh both had a hit and RBI.

Jaton pitched five innings allowing eight rights, even earned, on six hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.  Smith allowed an earned run on three hits.  Pankonen pitched two innings giving up just one hit with three strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 14U Ends Regular Season with Another Win

Dell Rapids 14U ended their regular season with another I-29 League win on Wednesday, July 7th.  Dell Rapids defeated Elkton on the road 13-5.

Dell Rapids scored seven times right away in the top of the first inning.  Quinn Carr and Lincoln Fersdahl both had RBI singles.  Brandon Schmidt had a two-run single, Logan Donovan had an RBI single, and Schmidt scored on an error for the early 7-0 lead.  Dell Rapids extended the lead when Donovan had an RBI ground out in the top of the second inning.

Tad Tjaden scored on an error to push the lead to 9-0 in the top of the third inning.  Elkton scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning.   Kenny Swanson added an RBI ground out in the top of the fifth inning to give Dell Rapids a 10-1 lead.  Elkton picked up another run in the bottom of the inning.

Nick Snyder had an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning, and Dell Rapids led 11-2.  Cole Ruesink scored on a wild pitch, and Snyder had an RBI single in the top of the seventh to put Dell Rapids ahead 13-2.  Elkton scored three times in the bottom of the seventh.

Cooper Frost had three hits, a single, double, and a triple.  Donovan had two hits and two RBIs.  Snyder had two hits and an RBI.  Ruesink had two hits, including a triple.  Tjaden had a double and two RBIs.  Schmidt had a hit and two RBIs.  Fersdahl and Carr both had a hit and an RBI.  Noah Larson had a single.   Swanson had an RBI.

Tjaden pitched three innings allowing an earned run on a hit with four walks and three strikeouts.  Frost pitched an inning walking one and striking out three.  Ruesink pitched an inning giving up an unearned run with a walk and three strikeouts.  Talan Millage pitched two innings allowing three earned runs on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Dell Rapids will play in the Region 2A tournament July 14th through 16th in Northville.  Dell Rapids’ first game will be against Madison Maroon on Wednesday, July 14th at 11:00 a.m.

Hills-Beaver Creek 14U Scores Late to Beat West Central Royal 14U

Hills-Beaver Creek used two big innings to break a scoreless tie and get a 12-0 win over West Central Royal 14U on Wednesday, July 7th.

The game was scoreless through four innings of play, but Hills-Beaver Creek took advantage of eight walks and a hit batter to score seven runs on just one hit in the top of the fifth inning.  Hills-Beaver Creek then scored five more times in the top of the sixth without a hit again taking advantage of four walks, three hit batters, and an error.

West Central was held to just one hit.  Tyler Warne hit a single in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Lando Whiting pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing just one hit with two walks and two strikeouts.  Gaven DeHaven pitched one inning allowing seven earned runs on a hit and six walks.  Ty Sichmeller pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing four runs, one earned, on five walks and a strikeout.  Warne pitched an inning allowing an earned run on two hits and a strikeout.

West Central Gold 14U No-Hits Tri-Valley White 14U

West Central Gold 14U got a big win over Tri-Valley White 14U on Wednesday, July 7th.  West Central won by a score of 17-2 in four innings while holding Tri-Valley to no hits in the game.

Tri-Valley did score the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.  Kaden Egger scored on a passed ball after being hit by a pitch, advancing to second on a passed ball, and then stealing third.

West Central took control of the game in top of the second by scoring nine times.  Carter Evans had an RBI single.  Jacob Kono had a two-run double.  Seth Lind scored on an error.  Jack Sebert had an RBI single.  Cain Grocott, Sebert, and Caden Alfson all scored on a passed ball, and Keaton Vessells scored on an error to make the score 9-1.

Levi Kretzschmar scored the second run for Tri-Valley in the bottom of the second inning.  He scored on a passed ball after also getting hit by a pitch, moving to second on a wild pitch, and then advancing to third on a ground out.

West Central then scored seven more times in the top of the third.  Sebert had an RBI walk.  Kono and Grocott both scored on a wild pitch.  Vessells had an RBI sacrifice fly.  Zach Lorang had an RBI ground out.  Seth Lind was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Kono had an RBI walk.  The final run of the game was scored in the top of the fourth when Alfson scored on an error to make the score 17-2.

Egger pitched two innings for Tri-Valley giving up nine earned runs on 10 hits with a walk and a strikeout.  Denton Bicknase pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing seven earned runs on four hits and three walks.  Kretzschmar pitched 2/3 of an inning walking one and striking out one.  Landon Schenkel pitched an inning allowing an earned run on a hit with a walk.

Alfson had two triples in the game.  Kono had two hits, one a double, with three RBIs.  Nick Lorang had two hits.  Sebert had a hit and two RBIs.  Vessells, Z. Lorang, Evans, and Lind all had a hit and an RBI.  Grocott also had an RBI.  Grocott pitched an inning allowing an earned run on two walks.  Kono pitched an inning also allowing an earned run.  Vessells pitched an inning with two strikeouts, and Alfson pitched an inning with a walk and two strikeouts.

Colton Legion Drops Two of Last Three Games

The Colton Legion baseball team lost two of their last three games over the last week.  Colton is currently 7-8 on the season.

On Thursday, July 1st, Colton hosted Madison.  Madison won that game 17-4. Madison scored a run in the top of the first inning, but then six in the fourth, four in the fourth, and six more in the fifth inning.  Nick Haas drove home two runs with a double in the bottom of the third for Colton.  Colton scored two more in the bottom of the sixth on singles by Alex Andresen and Brayden Humpel.

Colton then hosted Canova the very next night on Friday, July 2nd.  Colton got a close 2-1 victory to even their record at 7-7.  Colton broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth when Luke Lofswald scored after a base hit to start the inning.  Canova tied the game in the top of the sixth, but Colton got the game-winning run in the bottom of the inning.  Owen Besmer got a one-out single, his second of the game.  Cole Skadsen followed with a base hit as well.  Besmer later scored in the inning to give Colton the lead.  Canova loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Logan Cowill got a strikeout to end the game and get the win.  Cowill pitched a complete game allowing just two hits while striking out six.

Colton also hosted Tea on Monday, July 5th, but Tea was victorious, 5-3.  Tea scored two runs in the top of the first inning and then added three more in the top of the third.  Andresen scored the first run for Colton in the bottom of the second.  They would get two more in the bottom of the sixth as Skadsen and Humpel both scored.  Lofswald had two hits in the game.  Humpel, Andresen, Skadsen, Cowill, Haas, and Riley Carlson all had a hit in the game as well.

Wood Ducks Currently Sixth in Cornbelt Standings

The Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks are currently in sixth place in the Cornbelt League standings with a 5-8 league record through July 6th.  They are currently tied with Salem and just two games back of the Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks.

The Wood Ducks have gone 1-3 in their last four games.  Salem defeated the Wood Ducks 10-2 on Thursday, June 24th.  Canova got a two-run victory, 3-1, on Sunday, June 27th.  The Wood Ducks then picked up a win against PBR, 5-4, on Thursday, July 1st.  Madison, however, defeated the Wood Ducks 12-10 on Tuesday, July 6th.

The Wood Ducks will play the Gamecocks on Friday, July 9th.  They will travel to Flandreau on Sunday, July 11th, and then hit the road again on Thursday, July 15th to play the Dell Rapids Mudcats.

PBR Ends Skid with Late Rally over Lennox

Dell Rapids PBR ended a four-game losing streak with a rally late in the game against Lennox.  PBR scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn a 5-2 win on Tuesday, July 6th at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

Lennox’s two runs came in the very first inning on a couple of singles and an error.  They were then held to just two more hits the rest of the game. 

PBR finally got on the board in the bottom of fifth.  Riley Hoffman had an RBI single to score Carter Gullickson to cut the lead to 2-1.  PBR then tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.  Dell Rapids then grabbed the lead in the bottom of the eighth.  Gullickson, Weston Hanson, and Hoffman had back-to-back-to-back RBI singles to give PBR the 5-2 lead.  Lennox was able to get two runners on in the top of the ninth, but they were unable to score.

Hanson had four hits and an RBI.  Hoffman finished with three hits and two RBIs.  Gullickson had two hits and an RBI.  Brandon Geraets also had two singles in the game. 

Jake Rechtenbaugh pitched seven innings allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits with seven walks and four strikeouts.  Hoffman pitched the final two innings allowing two hits and two walks and three strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 14U Notches Another League Win

The Dell Rapids 14U team continued their strong run through the I-29 League with another league victory on Tuesday, July 6th.  Dell Rapids defeated Flandreau 4-2 at Volunteer Field.

Dell Rapids scored a run in each of the first two innings.  Quinn Carr had an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning, and Logan Donovan had an RBI ground out in the bottom of the second for a 2-0 lead.  Flandreau cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the fourth, but Dell Rapids got the run back in the bottom of the inning.  Lincoln Fersdahl had an RBI single. 

Flandreau again got within a run in the top of the sixth inning.  A run scored on a passed ball to make the score 3-2, but once again Dell Rapids got the run back.  Talan Millage had an RBI single to put Dell Rapids ahead by two, 4-2.  Dell Rapids held Flandreau scoreless in the seventh for the win.

Carr had three hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Fersdahl and Millage both had a hit and an RBI.  Tad Tjaden had two hits.  Cooper Frost had a single.  Donovan had an RBI.

Carr pitched three innings giving up one walk, two hit batters, and striking out seven batters.  Fersdahl pitched four innings allowing two runs, both unearned, on two hits with six walks and eight strikeouts.

West Central Royal 14U Gets Extra Inning Win over Tea Navy

West Central Royal scored three times in the top of the eighth inning and then held off Tea Navy for a 9-7 extra-inning win in Tea on Tuesday, July 6th.

West Central had an early 5-1 lead before watching Tea take the lead late in the game.  Landen Holewa scored on an error, and Gavin DeHaven had an RBI single in the top of the first inning.  After Tea scored a run in the bottom of the second, West Central added three more runs in the top of the third.  Cooper Mulder and CJ DenBoer both had an RBI single, and Stone Loof scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-1.

Tea cut the lead down to 5-3 with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.  They tied the game, 5-5, in the bottom of fourth with two more runs.  Cody Opitiz had an RBI single in the top of the fifth to give West Central a one-run lead.  Tea got the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh on a passed ball with two outs to send the game into extra innings.

West Central struck for three runs in the top of the eighth.  Mulder had a two-run double, and Loof had an RBI sacrifice fly to give West Central a 9-6 lead.  Tea got a run in the bottom of the inning with two outs, but the rally stopped there.

Mulder had four hits, including a double, and three RBIs.  DenBoer, DeHaven, and Opitz all had a single and RBI.  Lando Whiting had a hit, and Loof had an RBI.

Anthony Lanham pitched two innings allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.  Loof pitched an inning giving up two runs, one earned, on five walks and one strikeout.  Quincy Stephens pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.  Holewa pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing one walk and striking out one batter.
