Dell Rapids Wins 2021 14U C Division State Title

Dell Rapids played a total of eight games at the 2021 South Dakota 14U C Division Fastpitch state tournament at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls and ultimately came home with the state title on Sunday, July 11th.

Dell Rapids played their first game against the Cougars on Friday, July 9th.  The Cougars scored two times in the top of the first, but Dell Rapids scored four times in the bottom of the inning for a 4-2 win.  The Cougars tied the game in the top of the fifth with two runs, but again Dell Rapids responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning for a 7-4 lead.  The Cougars scored twice in the top of the sixth inning, but Dell Rapids hung on for the win.  Kya Alderson had a hit with two RBIs.  Addy Van’t Hof had a double with an RBI.  Abby Timm also had a hit.  Alderson pitched six innings allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.

Dell Rapids had an easier win in their second game on Friday.  They defeated Elk Point-Jefferson 12-0.  Dell Rapids scored in every inning, including seven in the top of the fourth, while holding Elk Point-Jefferson to just two hits.  Alderson and Makaylah O’Meara both had two hits, and each had a double, with two RBIs.  Kaley Rydell also had two hits and two RBIs.  Van’t Hof had a triple and double in the game.  Elly Olson had a hit and two RBIs.  Aubrey Hubers had a hit and an RBI.  Brynlee Kriens had a hit, and Timm had an RBI.  Alderson pitched all four innings allowing just two hits and a walk with six strikeouts.

In the first game on Saturday, July 10th, Dell Rapids got a game-winning RBI single from Timm for a 7-6 win over the Luverne Blaze.  The Blaze scored four in the top of the first inning.  Dell Rapids countered with three in the bottom of the inning, and then three more in the second for a 6-4 lead.  Luverne tied the game with two runs in the third, before Dell Rapids got the win in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Alderson had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.  Olson and Timm both had a hit and an RBI.  Van’t Hof and Haley Rydell each had a single.  Megan Lebahn had an RBI.  Aldereson allowed six runs, but none of them earned, on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Dell Rapids earned a 10-0 win over Sturgis in the quarterfinals on Saturday.  Sturgis was held to just one hit in the game.  O’Meara had three hits, including two triples, with three RBIs.  Alderson had two hits, one double, with two RBIs.  Hubers had two hits and an RBI.  Olson had two hits, including a double.  Lebahn had a hit and two RBIs.  Timm had a hit and an RBI.  Van’t Hof and Rydell each had a double, and Kriens also had a hit.  Alderson pitched four innings allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.

Dell Rapids suffered their first setback in the semifinals.  Tyndall earned a 6-1 over Dell Rapids on Sunday, July 11th.  Dell Rapids was held to just four hits in the game.  Olson had two hits.  Van’t Hof had a triple and an RBI.  Lebahn had a single.  Alderson allowed six earned runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts.

In their second game on Sunday, Dell Rapids got to play Elk Point-Jefferson for the second time in the tournament.  Dell Rapids again got the win, this time 12-3 by scoring nine runs in the final two innings.  Alderson had three doubles and three RBIs.  Lebahn had three hits and two RBIs.  Olson had three hits, two of them doubles.  Timm had two hits and two RBIs.  Van’t Hof had a double and two RBIs.  Kriens had a hit and an RBI.  Hubers had a single.  Rydell finished with two RBIs.  Alderson allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with five strikeouts.

With their second win over Elk Point-Jefferson, Dell Rapids earned a trip to the championship against Tyndall.  Both teams scored three runs in the first inning.  Tyndall got one run in the top of the second, but Dell Rapids scored two times in the bottom of the second.  That’s all the scoring that would be done, and Dell Rapids won 5-4 forcing a second championship game.  Van’t Hof had two hits and two RBIs.  Lebahn had two hits and an RBI.  Alderson had a hit and an RBI.  Hubers and Olson both had a hit as well.  Alderson gave up four earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

Now that both Dell Rapids and Tyndall had one loss in the tournament, the final game of the day on Sunday was the winner-take-all championship game.  Dell Rapids scored five runs in the first three innings, and then added two more in the top of the fifth for the 7-4 win for the state title.  O’Meara had a home run and two RBIs.  Alderson had a double and an RBI.  Van’t Hof also had a double and an RBI.  Humbers had a triple with an RBI.  Kriens had a triple, and Olson had a single.  Alderson allowed four earned runs on 11 hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Tri-Valley Maroon 14U Defeats Tri-Valley White in Region Play

A nine-run first inning set the tone for Tri-Valley Maroon 14U as they defeated Tri-Valley White 14U by a score of 17-3 in five innings on Saturday, July 10th in an elimination game of the Region 3A tournament in Humboldt.

Maroon scored within the first two batters when Brody Dybvig had an RBI double.  Carter Sorenson followed with an RBI double and then later scored on a wild pitch.  Nathan Madison had a two run double for the fifth run of the inning.  Madison later scored on a passed ball.  Alex Wingen had an RBI single, followed by an RBI double by Dybvig, who later scored the ninth run on an error.

White got a run in the bottom of the first inning when Levi Kretzschmar drew a bases-loaded walk to score Denton Bicknase.  Maroon got two more runs in the top of the second on a RBI singles by Hunter Foster and Wingen.  Parker Hemme had an RBI single for White in the bottom of the second to make the score 11-2.  An RBI single by Tristen Bunde for Maroon pushed the lead to 12-2 in the top of the third inning.

White’s final run came in the bottom of the fourth when Bicknase had an RBI single.  Maroon scored five more times in the top of the fifth.  Foster had a two-run single, Cyrus Kirstein and Foster scored on a passed ball, and Wingen scored on an error.

White was led by Bicknase with two hits and an RBI.  Blaine Wieczorek had two hits.  Hemme had a hit and RBI.  Grant Schlueter had a double.  Bracken Sharpe and Benjamin Myhre both had singles.  Kretzschmar had an RBI.  Gage Egger gave up five earned runs on two hits with three walks.  Landon Schenkel pitched four innings allowing nine runs, seven earned, on 14 hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.  Bicknase pitched an inning allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits with a walk and strikeout.

Foster had four hits, including a double, and three RBIs.  Wingen had four hits and two RBIs.  Sorenson had three hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Dybvig had two doubles and two RBIs.  Aiden Bunde had two hits.  Madison had a double and two RBIs.  T. Bunde had a hit and an RBI.  Noah Eggert had a single, and Landon Jensen had an RBI.  T. Bunde pitched three innings allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  Cody Lofswold pitched two innings allowing an unearned run on four hits with four strikeouts.

Hartford Sparx Claim 2021 State Fastpitch Softball Tournament Championship

The Hartford Sparx won the 2021 South Dakota 18U B Division Fastpitch State Tournament championship held at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls Friday, July 9th through Sunday, July 11th.

The Sparx opened the tournament with a 12-3 win over the Rebels on Friday.  Hartford scored in every inning, including eight in the fourth, for the win.  Addy Kramer had three hits, two doubles and a home run, with four RBIs.  Grace Harden had three hits and three RBIs.  Olivia Brown had three hits, including a home run and a double, with two RBIs.  Caitlyn Maa had two hits and an RBI.  Avery Evans had two hits, one a double.  Riley Morrison had two hits.  Brooke Opitz had a double and an RBI.  McKenna Sichmeller had a hit, and Jenna Lueth had an RBI.  Taylor Kunzweiler pitched five innings allowing three earned runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Hartford won their second game on Friday against Fusion Heat 4-0.  The Sparx got a run in the first, two more in the fifth, and another in the sixth while holding Fusion Heat to just three hits.  Maa had a double and two RBIs.  Kunzweiler had two hits.  Morrison had a hit and an RBI.  Opitz and Harden both had singles.  Kramer also had an RBI.  Harden pitched seven innings allowing just three hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

In the semifinals of the winner’s bracket, the Sparx defeated Mitchell Adrenaline 11-2 to advance to the championship game undefeated.  Hartford again scored in every inning while pulling away from Mitchell for the win.  Opitz had three hits, including a home run and double, with three RBIs.  Maa had two hits and five RBIs.  Lueth finished with two hits.  Harden had a hit and two RBIs.  Evans and Morrison both had a hit as well.  Harden pitched four innings allowing two runs, both unearned, on four hits with three strikeouts.

Hartford met Fusion Heat in the championship game.  The scoreless game was broken in the bottom of the third when Fusion Heat got a home run.  It was just one of their three hits, but was the difference in the game as Fusion Heat beat the Sparx 1-0 to force a second championship game.  Evens had two hits for Hartford.  Opitz, Harden, Kunzweiler, and Sichmelleer all had singles.  Harden pitched five innings allowing one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts.

With each team now having one loss, the Sparx and Fusion Heat played one more time to determine the championship.  This time the Sparx used a pair of four run innings to take the title with an 8-3 win.  Fusion Heat scored three runs in the top of the second, but Hartford had a four-run bottom of second inning and four-run third inning for the win.

Harden had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs.  Opitz had two hits and an RBI.  Sichmeller had a double and two RBIs.  Kramer had a solo home run.  Morrison had a single and RBI.  Evans also had a hit.  Harden pitched four innings allowing three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Gamecocks Beat Wood Ducks in Hartford-Humboldt Battle

The Gamecocks scored six runs late in the game to get a 9-3 win over the Wood Ducks in a Hartford-Humboldt Cornbelt League battle on Friday, July 9th.

Both teams scored two runs in the first inning.  The Gamecocks as the visiting team in the game scored two in the top of the first on a two-run double by Cole Hellie.  The Wood Ducks answered with two in the bottom of the first when Jake Ellens scored on an error and Blake Svoboda had an RBI single. 

The Gamecocks regained the lead in the top of the second when Drew DeMers drew a bases-loaded walk.  The score remained 3-2 in favor of the Gamecocks until the top of the seventh inning.  The Gamecocks scored three runs in the inning.  Devon Garry had a two-run double and Hellie added an RBI single for a 6-2 lead.  The lead grew to 8-2 with two more runs in the top of the ninth.  DeMers had an RBI double, and Cam Quigley added an RBI single.  Joe Hanisch added a solo home run in the top of the ninth to give the Gamecocks a 9-2 lead.  The Wood Ducks got one run in the bottom of the ninth when Nathan Adrian drew an RBI walk.

Svoboda had two hits and an RBI for the Wood Ducks.  Rob Lind had two hits.  Auedin King, Ellens, Drew Eldeen, Austin Smith, and Kadyn Nolz all had singles in the game.  Adrian had an RBI.  Svoboda pitched six innings allowing three earned runs on four hits with six walks and 12 strikeouts.  Smith pitched two innings allowing five earned runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  Adrian pitched an inning allowing an earned run on two hits.

Hellie had two hits, one double, and three RBIs.  Quigley had two hits and an RBI.  Chad Morrison had two hits.  DeMers and Garry both had a double and two RBIs.  Hanisch had a home run and an RBI.  Clayton Hanisch and a double.  Broc Haldeman and Noah Vettrus both had singles.  Tyler Renken pitched five innings allowing two runs, both unearned, on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  Quigley pitched four innings allowing an earned run on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Mudcats Win Big in Last Two Games

The Dell Rapids Mudcats scored two big wins in their last two Cornbelt League games.  The Mudcats defeated Salem 12-3 on Thursday, July 8th.  Then then clobbered Lennox 21-2 on Sunday, July 11th.

The Mudcats scored five early runs in the first two innings on Thursday.  They added another in the third and two more in the fourth for an 8-0 lead.  Salem picked up a couple of runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the fifth, but wouldn’t get any closer the rest of the night.

Ty Hoglund had three hits and an RBI.  Landon Ruesink also had three hits.  Nate Henry had two home runs and three RBIs.  Grant Olson had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Travis Peters, Trevor Freudenthal, and Dalton Allen all had two hits in the game.  Logan Stone had a double.  Kris Regas pitched seven innings allowing three runs on six hits with 16 strikeouts for thee win.  John Spaeth pitched two innings striking out three batters.

The Mudcats put on an offensive show on Sunday clobbering three grand slams in the five-inning win over the Lennox.  The Mudcats scored 10 runs in the first, six more in the second, one in the third, and four in the fourth.  Lennox got their two runs in the second inning.

Nine players had at least one hit in the game.  Dalton Lehnen had a grand slam in the first inning and a single with five RBIs.  Henry had a grand slam in the second inning and four RBIs.  Ruesink had his grand slam in the fourth inning and four RBIs.  Freudenthal had two doubles and two RBIs.  Regas had three hits, one double, and two RBIs. Allen had two hits and an RBI.  Logan Stone had a hit and two RBIs.  Jimmy Bauer had a hit and an RBI.  Mark Abrahamson had a double, and Hoglund had a hit.  Lehnen pitched all five innings allowing two runs and two hits with nine strikeouts.

PBR Splits in Last Two League Games

Dell Rapids PBR went 1-1 in the last two Cornbelt League games.  PBR hosted Madison on Thursday, July 8th, and got a 7-6 com-from-behind victory.  PBR then traveled to Colman on Sunday, July 11th and gave up three late runs to fall 5-2.

Madison got on the board first in Thursday’s game.  Nick Bird had a solo home run in the top of the first to give Madison a 1-0 lead.  PBR tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Clarence Fjellanger.  Madison regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning with two runs.  They added one more in the sixth and two more in the seventh for a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning.

PBR’s come-from-behind rally started with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.  With two runners on and two outs, Carter Gullickson reached on an error which also scored Grant Sweeter and Beau Behrend.  Gullickson later scored on a wild pitch.  Weston Hanson had an RBI single to pull PBR within a run at 6-5.  PBR then took the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Fjellanger had an RBI single to score Brandon Geraets to tie the game.  Tim Wilhelmsen reached on an error that also scored Adrian Juba for the go-ahead run.  Madison got two runners on with two outs in the top of the ninth, but David Kirby was able to get a ground ball out to end the game.

Fjellanger had two hits and two RBIs.  Hanson had two hits and an RBI.  Riley Calhoon had a double.  Riley Hoffman, Sweeter, and Behrend all had a single.  Trey Randel pitched eight innings allowing six runs, four earned, on nine hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.  Kirby pitched the ninth giving up two walks and striking out two.

In Sunday afternoon’s game, Colman got an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  PBR tied the game in the top of the third on an RBI sacrifice fly by Jake Rechtenbaugh.  They then took the lead in the top of the fourth when Kirby had an RBI single to left field.  Colman tied the game in the bottom fifth.  A double in the bottom of the seventh gave Colman a 3-2 lead.  Another double later in the inning pushed the lead to 5-2.

Kirby had two hits and an RBI.  Gullickson had two hits, including a double.  Rechtenbaugh had a single and RBI.  Hanson, Behrend, Sweeteer, and Juba all had a hit.  Kirby pitched six innings allowing five runs, two earned, on five hits with five walks and nine strikeouts.  Rechtenbaugh pitched two innings allowing two hits while striking out five.

Madison Gold 14U Has Big Inning to Beat Tri-Valley Maroon 14U

Tri-Valley Maroon 14U fell to Madison Gold 14U in an opening round game of the Region 3A tournament on Friday, July 9th.  Madison had 12-run fifth inning to beat Tri-Valley Maroon 14-2.

Madison scored two runs in the top of the first, but Tri-Valley responded with two of their own in the bottom of the inning.  Carter Sorenson drew a bases-loaded walk and Nathan Madison had an RBI ground out to tie the game 2-2.  The score remained 2-2 until Madison’s 12-run fifth inning.

Tristen Bunde had two hits in the game.  Brody Dybvig had a double.  Alex Wingen and Kaiden Bernards both had a single.  Sorenson and Madison both had an RBI.  Wingen pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts.  Madison pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing four earned runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout.  Landon Jensen pitched 1/3 of an inning allowed a hit and struck out one.

Dell Rapids 16U Wins Two Against Tea Gold

Dell Rapids 16U won both games of a double-header against Tea Gold at Volunteer Field on Thursday, July 8th.  Dell Rapids won the first game 6-3 and took the second game 9-4.

Dell Rapids scored first in the bottom of the first inning when Braden Fersdahl scored on an error for an early 1-0 lead.  Tea tied the game in the top of the second, but Dell Rapids added two more runs in the bottom of the inning.  John Mortrude brought home two runs with a single to left field for a 3-1 advantage.  Tea again tied the game in the top of the third inning with two runs.  Dell Rapids scored the final three runs of the game in the bottom of the third when Brayden Pankonen and Will Jaton scored on a fielder’s choice.  Joe Rechtenbaugh brought home the final run on a single to left field.

Mortrude had a hit and two RBIs.  CJ Smith had a double and two RBIs.  Rechtenbaugh had a single and an RBI.  Fersdahl and Pankonen also had singles in the game.   Rechtenbaugh pitched three innings allowing three earned runs on three hits with eight walks and a strikeout.  Smith pitched two innings giving up a hit and striking out one.

Dell Rapids trailed early in game number two.  They scored the first run in the top of the first on an RBI single by Dylan Mathis.  Tea, however, scored three times in the bottom of the first for a 3-1 lead.  Dell Rapids took control in the top of the third scoring six times.  Mathis had an RBI ground ball, Aiden Boechler scored on a passed ball, Mortrude drew a bases-loaded walk, Evan Nelson drove home two with a single, and Mortrude stole home to give Dell Rapids a 7-3 lead.  Dell Rapids added to the lead in the top of the fourth.  Jaton had an RBI double, and Smith added an RBI single for a 9-3 advantage.  Tea got their final run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Mathis and Nelson both had a single and two RBIs.  Jaton had a double and an RBI.  Smith had a hit and an RBI.  Micah Pickard and Boechler both had one hit.  Mortrude had an RBI.  Sutton Williams pitched all five innings allowing four runs, none of them earned, on five hits with 10 strikeouts.

Tri-Valley 16U Wins Slugfest over Flandreau

Tri-Valley and Flandreau put on an offensive show in Flandreau on Thursday, July 8th.  The two teams combined for 27 runs and 36 hits in the seven-inning game.  Tri-Valley’s late runs secured a 14-13 victory.

Tri-Valley scored three runs in the top of the first inning only to see Flandreau score two in the bottom of the first.  Tri-Valley then scored one run in the second, and Flandreau scored two more times.  The game was tied 4-4 after two innings.

Flandreau took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs for a 7-4 lead.  Tri-Valley, however, scored six times in the fifth inning to regain the lead 10-7.  Flandreau cut the lead to one with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Tri-Valley scored four times in the top of the seventh to lead 14-9, and all four runs were needed.  Flandreau scored four times in the bottom of the seventh and has the tying run on third base when the third out was recorded.

Cole Focken had four hits, including a double, with three RBIs.  Mason Hendrixson and Lawson Loiseau both had three hits and an RBI each.  Aidan Heitkamp had two hits, one double, and an RBI.  Brendan Newman had two hits and an RBI.  Everett Althoff also had two hits.  Noah Haynes had a double and two RBIs.  Derek Van Asselt had a hit and two RBIs.  Kaden Egger, Tanner Van Asselt, and Troy Nebelsick all had a hit in the game as well.

Althoff pitched three innings allowing six runs, four earned, on five hits and five walks and a strikeout.  Hendrixson pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up three earned runs on seven hit with two walks and three strikeouts.  Haynes pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing four runs, two earned on three hits with a walk and a strikeout.

West Central 16U Blasts Madison White

West Central scored 26 runs and belted 21 hits in a five-inning 26-7 win over Madison White in Madison on Thursday, July 8th.

West Central scored in every inning.  They scored one run in the top of the first, eight in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth, and then 12 runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Madison got three runs in the third and four in the fourth.

Andrew Zimmer had three hits, two home runs and a double, with six RBIs.  Braydon Odegaard had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs.  Duece Sherard had three hits, one a double, and three RBIs.  Justin Zirpel had three hits, two of them doubles, and three RBIs.  Camden McDonald had two hits and two RBIs.  Xzavian Ferris had two hits, one  double, and an RBI.  Derek Renken had two hits.  Cade Vander Woude also had two hits, one of them a double.  Gage Nelson had a hit and an RBI.  Dalton Mulder and Maison Schuldt both had a single.

Mulder pitched two innings allowing just one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.  Sherard pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing seven runs, four earned, on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts.  Zimmer pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
