West Central 16U Falls to Dakota Valley in Region 1A

The West Central 16U team fell to Dakota Valley in the Region 1A tournament in Humboldt on Monday, July 26th.  West Central was held to just two hits in a 3-0 loss to Dakota Valley.

Dakota Valley got single runs in the top of the first, fourth, and sixth innings. 

Camden McDonald and Justin Zirpel had the two hits for West Central.  Andrew Zimmer pitched six innings allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.  Owen Heath pitched an inning recording one strikeout.

West Central will play Chamberlain in an elimination game on Tuesday, July 27th, at 3:00 p.m.

Late Runs Lift Madison Black 16U to Victory over Dell Rapids in Region Play

A run in the seventh to tie the game and then two more in the top of the eighth gave Madison Black 16U a 6-4 victory over Dell Rapids in Region 2A play on Monday, July 26th at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

Madison Black started the game with a run in the top of the first inning.  They added another in the top of the third, but Dell Rapids got one run back in the bottom of the third.  Aiden Boechler had an RBI ground out to cut the lead to 2-1.  Madison picked up their third run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. 

Dell Rapids then put together a three-run bottom of the fourth to take the lead 4-3.  Brayden Pankoneen had an RBI single in the inning.  Braden Fersdahl scored on a balk, and then Boechler reached on an error that also scored Pankonen.  The score remained 4-3 in favor of Dell Rapids until the top of the seventh with one out.  Madison got the tying run on an error.  Boechler laced a double to center field to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but Boechler only made it as far as third base as the next three batters got out.  That forced the game into extra innings, but Madison scored two times in the top of the eighth inning to get the 6-4 win. 

Pankonen finished with two hits and an RBI.  Boechler had a double and an RBI.  Will Jaton also had a double.  Fersdahl, Dylan Mathis, and Sutton Williams all had a single.  Pankonen pitched five innings allowing three earned runs on 11 hits with a walk and two strikeouts.  Joe Rechtenbaugh pitched three innings allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

Dell Rapids will play Tea in an elimination game on Tuesday, July 27th at 1:00 p.m. at Rickeman Field.

West Central 14U Takes Fourth at State A Tournament

The West Central 14U baseball team took home a fourth place finish at the 2021 South Dakota VFW 14U Class A State Tournament held in Vermillion Friday, July 23rd through Sunday, July 25th.

West Central opened the tournament with a game against Spearfish on Friday.  West Central took the lead right away in the top of the first inning with a run.  They added another run in the top of the fourth inning for a 2-0 lead.  The big inning for West Central came in the top of the fifth when they scored four times for a 6-0 advantage.  Spearfish cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth with three runs, but West Central got an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning for the 7-3 victory.

CJ DenBoer had three hits in the game.  Caden Alfson had two hits, a double and triple, with an RBI.  Jesse Jost had a hit and two RBIs.  Keaton Vessells had a double.  Landen Holewa, Jack Sebert, and Cain Grocott all had a single.  Lando Whiting had an RBI.  Anthony Lanham pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing three runs, none of them earned, on two hits with six walks and two strikeouts.  Sebert pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing just one hit with two strikeouts.

West Central then met the host team, Vermillion, in the semifinals on Saturday.  West Central built an early lead.  Sebert had an RBI single in the first inning, Holewa reached on an error that also scored Grocott in the top of the second inning, and Sebert then had an RBI ground out in the third inning to give West Central a 3-0 lead.  Vermillion got a run back in the bottom of the third to make the score 3-1.  Vermillion plated another run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Vermillion completed the comeback with two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 4-3 win.

Jost had two hits.  Sebert had a hit and two RBIs.  Whiting also had a hit.  Alfson pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits with four walks and nine strikeouts.  Holewa pitched  2/3 of an inning giving up two runs, one earned, on four walks and one strikeout.

West Central finished the tournament against Winner in the 3rd/4th place game on Sunday.  Winner got the first score in the top of the first inning.  West Central tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Alfson.  Winner got two runs in the top of the fifth, which proved to be the difference as Winner took the game by a score of 3-1.

Nick Lorang, Jost, and Holewa all had a single in the game.  Alfson had an RBI.  Vessells pitched two innings allowing an earned run on a hit with four walks and a strikeout.  Jost pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing two runs, neither of them earned, on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.  Sebert pitched 2/3 of an inning.

Wood Ducks Drop Two Games at District 4B Tournament

The Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks lost both of their games at the District 4B tournament in Colman ending their 2021 season.  The Wood Ducks entered the tournament as the ninth seed.  They played eighth-seeded Salem on Friday, July 23rd and then third-seeded Lennox on Sunday, July 25th.

Despite out-hitting Salem in the game, the Wood Ducks gave up four runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth inning as Salem got an 8-2 victory.  Austin Smith had an RBI single for the Wood Ducks in the top of the second to give them a 1-0 lead.  R Lind followed that with a solo home run in the top of the third for a 2-0 lead.  The score remained 2-0 until Salem scored their eight combined runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Lind had three hits in the game, including the home run, with an RBI.  Smith had two hits and an RBI.  Drew Eldeen, Blake Svoboda, Tyler Lundborg, and Philip Madsen all had singles in the game.  Svoboda pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with five walks and five strikeouts.  Nick Seliski pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits and a walk.

The Wood Ducks then had to face Lennox in an elimination game on Sunday.  Lennox earned a 5-2 victory thanks to a complete game pitched by Drew Sweeter and two home runs by Corey Vasquez.

Hartfold-Humboldt Gamecocks out of District 4B Tournament

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks had their season come to an end after back-to-back losses at the District 4B tournament in Colman.  The Gamecocks lost their first game on Saturday, July 24th and then lost their second game on Sunday, July 25th.

Going into the district tournament as the fourth seed, the Gamecocks took on the fifth-seeded Flandreau Cardinals on Saturday.  Flandreau scored three runs in the first two innings, picked up another run in the top of the fifth, and then scored six times in the top of the sixth inning for a 10-0 lead.  The Gamecocks were held to just two hits, and the game ended in the seventh inning on the 10-run rule with Flandreau winning 10-0.

Tyler Renken had a double, and Drew DeMers had a single for the two hits.  Renken pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts.  Noah Vettrus pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on a hit with a walk.

The loss sent the Gamecocks to the loser’s bracket to play the seventh-seeded Colman A’s on Sunday in an elimination game.  Colman also scored three runs in the first two innings for a 3-0 lead.  The Gamecocks tied the game in the bottom of the third inning with a three-run double by Joe Hanisch.  Colman regained the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs, but the Gamecocks took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the inning with three more runs.  Devon Garry had an RBI single, and Hanisch had a two-run home run to give the Gamecocks a 6-5 lead.  The lead was short-lived as Colman picked up two more runs in the top of the sixth inning and then five more in the top of the eighth for a 12-6 lead.  The Gamecocks tried to make a comeback.  Hanisch had an RBI single, Garry scored on an error, and Jon Maras had an RBI single to cut the lead to 12-9, but that was all the Gamecocks would get as Colman took the win.

Hanisch had three hits, including a home run and double, and drove home six runs.  Garry had two hits and an RBI.  Cam Quigley and Drew Maras both had two hits.  J. Maras had a hit and an RBI.  Broc Haldeman had a double, and Renken had a single.  Micah Warrington pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing seven runs, only one earned, on eight hits and three walks with a strikeout.  Cole Barthel pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing just one walk.  Haldeman pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing five earned runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout. Quigley pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing three hits with a strikeout.

PBR Advances to District 4B Semifinals

Dell Rapids PBR won their opening round game of the District 4B tournament in Colman on Saturday, July 24th. PBR entered the tournament as the sixth seed and played third-seeded Lennox. And just as they had done two other times this year, PBR got the best of Lennox with a 9-3 win.

It was a big seven-run top of the second inning that set the tone for PBR.  Tanner Solberg got things going with a two-run single.  Beau Behrend added an RBI single.  Riley Calhoon reached on an error as both Solberg and Behrend scored on the play.  Riley Hoffman followed with an RBI double, and Matt Gillogly had an RBI single to give PBR the 7-0 lead.

Lennox got two runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 7-2.  The score remained 7-2 until the bottom of the sixth inning.  Lennox picked up another run, but Dell Rapids added a run in the eighth when Carter Gullickson stole home, and then they got one more run in the ninth when David Kirby scored on a wild pitch.

Gullickson finished with three hits in the game.  Solberg had two hits and two RBIs.  Gillogly had two hits and an RBI.  Kirby finished with two hits, one of them a double.  Hoffman had a double and an RBI, and Behrend had a single and an RBI.

Trey Randel pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with five walks and six strikeouts.  Kirby pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing three walks while striking out three batters.  Hoffman pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.

PBR will play the Dell Rapids Mudcats in the semifinals on Tuesday, July 27th.  First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.  The winner will advance to the championship game and qualify for the state tournament.  The loser will have three more chances to win one game to qualify for state as well.

Dell Rapids 14U Takes 6th at State A Tournament

The Dell Rapids 14U baseball team finished their season with a sixth place finish at the 2021 South Dakota Class A State tournament in Vermillion Friday, July 23rd through Sunday, July 25th.

Dell Rapids played the host team Vermillion in the opening round on Friday.  Vermillion scored two runs in the top of the first, but Dell Rapids answered with two in the bottom of the inning for a 2-2 tie.  The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the fifth inning.  Dell Rapids then scored four times and added one more in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-2 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning.  Vermillion found their offense in top of the seventh getting six runs on seven hits to take they lead.  They held Dell Rapids scoreless in the bottom of the inning and got the 8-7 come-from-behind win.

Dell Rapids then played Spearfish on Saturday and squeaked out a 4-2 win to advance to the consolation championship.   Spearfish scored in the bottom of the first inning, but Dell Rapids got two in the top of the second for a 2-1 lead.  Dell Rapids got two more runs in the top of the fifth, and Spearfish scored one in the same inning to make the score 4-2.  Spearfish had the tying runs on third and second base with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a line drive out and double-up on second for the third out ended the game to give Dell Rapids the win.

In the consolation championship on Sunday, Dell Rapids faced Madison Gold.  Despite having an early lead, Dell Rapids fell to Madison by a score of 9-5.  Dell Rapids scored three times in the top of the first inning, and Madison got two back in the bottom of the first.  Dell Rapids added another run in the top of the second to lead 4-2, but Madison picked up five runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead for good.  Dell Rapids scored one in the top of the third with Madison scoring two in the bottom of the inning for the 9-5 lead.  Neither team scored in the final four innings of the game.

Cole Ruesink had six hits, with one double, during the state tournament games.  Lincoln Fersdahl had four hits, one double, with three RBIs.  Cooper Frost had three hits, two of them doubles, and four RBIs.  Quinn Carr had two hits, with one double, and two RBIs.  Grady Lamer and Talan Millage both finished with two hits.   Tad Tjaden had a double and two RBIs.  Kenny Swanson had a hit and one RBI.

Carr pitched 4 1/3 innings during the tournament allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts.  Fersdahl pitched four innings allowing no runs on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts.  Tjaden pitched four innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits with six walks and four strikeouts.  Frost pitched three innings and allowed nine runs, but just two earned, on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts.  Ruesink pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing three hits with a walk and three strikeouts.  Millage pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up six runs, two earned, on seven hits, with one strikeout. 

Dell Rapids finished with an overall record of 24-6 on the season.

Tri-Valley 16U Can’t Catch up to Garretson

Tri-Valley 16U couldn’t get out of an early deficit and lost to Garretson 10-5 on Thursday, July 22nd in Garretson.

Garretson scored four times right away in the bottom of the first inning.  Tri-Valley got a run back in the top of the second when Lawson Loiseau scored on a wild pitch.  Garretson, however, scored two more in the bottom of the second for a 6-1 lead.  Noah Haynes had an RBI ground out in the top of the third, but again Garretson responded with three more runs in the bottom of the third to push the lead to 9-2.

Duncan Snethen had an RBI single for Tri-Valley in the top of the fourth inning.  Garretson’s final run also game in the fourth inning to make the score 10-3.  Cole Focken scored on an error in the top of the fifth inning, and Haynes had an RBI single in the top of the seventh for the final Tri-Valley run.

Everett Althoff had three hits.  Haynes had two hits and two RBIs.  Kaden Egger had two hits.  Snethen had a hit and an RBI.  Beau Keith and Loiseau both had a triple in the game.  Focken added a single.  Althoff pitched two innings allowing six runs, three earned, on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts.  Aidan Heitkamp pitched an inning allowing three runs, all unearned, on two hits with three walks and a strikeout.  Mason Hendrixson pitched three innings allowing an unearned run with two walks and a strikeout.

West Central 16U Wins Slugfest Against Tea

The West Central 16U baseball team came out on the right side of a slugfest on Thursday, July 22nd against Tea.  The two teams combined for 25 runs and 20 hits with West Central getting the 18-7 victory in six innings.

West Central scored the first run in the top of the first inning.  Tea took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with two runs.  West Central responded with four straight.  They scored two runs in the top of the third and two more in the top of the fourth for a 5-2 advantage.  Tea tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.  West Central, however, took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the fifth and then exploded for 11 runs in thee top of the sixth inning to go ahead 18-5.  Tea scored just two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the game ended on the 10-run rule.

Gage Nelson finished with three hits.  Derek Renken had two hits, one a double, and five RBIs.  Andrew Zimmer had two hits and four RBIs.  Camden McDonald had two hits and two RBIs.  Dueece Sherard added a single and an RBI.  Will Nester had a double.  Both Dylan Stromer and Cade Vander Woude had a single.  Dalton Mulder had one RBI in the game.

Mulder pitched five innings allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.  Vander Woude pitched an inning giving up two runs, both unearned, on two hits with a strikeout.

Dell Rapids 16U Shuts out Hamlin in Regular Season Finale

The Dell Rapids 16U baseball team had their final regular season game on Thursday, July 22nd.  Dell Rapids hosted Hamlin and a got a 12-0 shutout win, ending the game on the 10-run rule in five innings.

Dell Rapids had back-to-back six-run innings in the first and second innings.  In the first inning Aiden Boechler had a two-run double, Will Jaton reached on an error scoring Boechler, Joe Rechtenbaugh had an RBI single, Dylan Mathis stole home, and John Mortrude scored on a wild pitch. 

Jaton doubled home the first two runs on the second inning, Mathis had an RBI triple and later scored, Aiden Geraets had an RBI double, and Evan Nelson also had an RBI single.

Boechler had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.  Mathis also had two hits, one a triple, and an RBI.  Jaton finished with a double and three RBIs.  Geraets had a double and an RBI.  Rechtenbaugh and Nelson both had RBI singles, and Brayden Pankonen also had a hit.

Rechtenbaugh pitched two innings allowing three hits while strikeout out two batters.  Pankonen pitched two innings without allowing a hit and striking out three batters.  Nelson pitched one inning and struck out two batters.

Dell Rapids finishes the regular season with a 15-4 record.  They will host the Region 2A tournament Monday, July 26th through Thursday, July 29th at Rickeman Field.  The top four teams of the six-team regional tournament will advance to the state tournament.
