Tri-Valley Drops Exciting Match to Lennox

The Tri-Valley Mustangs played an exciting, five-set match in Lennox against the Orioles on Thursday, September 2nd.  Unfortunately the Mustangs couldn’t get the win.

Tri-Valley took the first two sets of the match.  They won the first one 25-19.  It took an extra point in the second set, but the Mustangs won 26-24 for a 2-0 lead in the match.  Lennox fought back with a 25-20 win in the third set.  The fourth set again needed extra points as the two teams were tied 25-25.  Lennox got the final two points for the 27-25 win to force the fifth set.  Lennox won the final set 15-10 to take the match.

Madelyn Wenzel had 10 kills for the Mustangs.  Megan Wenzel had nine, while Hillary Hastings and Lauren Grinde both had seven kills each.  Hastings had two blocks.  Mad. Wenzel and Erica Bicknase both had a block.  Nevaeh Grann led the team with three ace serves.  Brookelyn Stieben, Meg. Wenzel, and Hannah West all had two aces each.  West finished with a team-high 24 digs on the night.  McKenzie Atwood added 14 digs, and Stieben had 13 digs.  Allyson Haga and Grann both finished with 12 digs.  Bicknase also had 10 digs.  Grann had 18 set assists in the match, while Stieben had 13 set assists.

The Mustangs (0-6) will look to get their first win of the season when they host Vermillion on Thursday, September 9th.

West Central Soccer Wins Three More Matches

The West Central Trojan girls soccer team remained undefeated with three more wins recently.  The Trojans traveled to the Black Hills area for matches against Belle Fourche on Friday, August 27th and St Thomas More on Friday, August 28th.  They played a home match against Dakota Valley on Tuesday, August 31st.

The Trojan offense was unstoppable during the weekend trip west.  West Central defeated Belle Fourche 10-0 with five different players scoring goals.  Rylee Haldeman had four goals.  Sadie Berg and Tessa VanOverebeke both had two goals each.  Molli Thornton and Alexa Borns each had a goal.  Keighlor Nolz, VanOverbeke, Madori Ockenga, Lily Sidel, and Thornton all had one assist each as well.  The Broncs only had one shot on goal which was saved by Cambell Fischer.

West Central’s offense was strong the next day as well against St Thomas More.  The Trojans defeated the Cavaliers 6-0.  Haldeman had two more goals in that win.  Berg, Anderson, Nolz, and Mara Schultz all had one goal apiece.  Haldeman also had two assists.  Berg and Sidel each had one assists.  The Cavaliers had a hard time with the Trojan defense, only getting two shots on goal.  Both saved by Fischer.

The Trojans had a more defensive battle against Dakota Valley at home on August 31st.  After scoring 16 goals in the previous two games, West Central was only able to score one time, but that was enough as the Trojans defeated the Panthers 1-0.  The goal came in the second half for West Central.

West Central is now 6-0-0 on the season.  They will host Vermillion on Thursday, September 2nd.

West Central Volleyball Home Opener Spoiled by Tea

After starting the season with two road wins over Vermillion and Dell Rapids, the West Central Trojans played their first home match of the season against the Tea Area Titans on Tuesday, August 31st.  The Titans played the role of spoiler winning the match in straight sets by scores of 16-25, 12-25, and 19-25.

Grace Harden finished with six kills in the match.  Hanna Lee had 15 set assists to lead the Trojans.  McKenna Sichmeller had five blocks.  Jocelyn Nilson finished with 15 digs.  Jenna Lueth and Kaia Gabbert both had an ace serve.

West Central (2-1) heads back on the road on Thursday, September 2nd when they travel to Madison to play the Bulldogs.

Tri-Valley Volleyball Falls on the Road

The Tri-Valley Mustangs, who have yet to play a home match this season, took a tough loss on Tuesday, August 31st.  The Mustangs played the #2 ranked Dakota Valley Panthers and lost in straight sets by scores of 16-25, 13-25, and 7-25.

Nevaeh Grann had two kills, three set assists, four digs, and a block in the match.  Madelyn and Megan Wenzel both had three kills each.  Megan also had two blocks.  Brooklyn Stieben led the team with four set assists.  Hannah West had a team-high seven digs, and Erica Bicknase finished with three ace serves.

The Mustangs (0-5) will have another road match on Thursday, September 2nd.  They will travel to Lennox to play the Orioles.

Cardinal Volleyball Wins Fifth Match of Season

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team has already won their fifth match of the season.  The Cardinals opened the season with a win at home on Thursday, August 26th.  They finished the Redhawk Tournament 3-1 on Saturday, August 28th.  And on Tuesday, August 31st the Cardinals won for the fifth time in Rutland.

St Mary took a four-set win over the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders.  The Cardinals opened the match with a 25-22 win.  The Raiders bounced back with a win in the second set 14-25.  St Mary would make sure the match would only go four sets as they won the next two by scores of 25-21 and 25-16.

The Cardinals finished with 42 kills as a team, 40 digs, 32 set assists, and 12 ace serves in the match.  Courtney Brown had 17 kills and 11 digs.  Ella Griffin had eight kills, five digs, nine set assists, and four ace serves.  Brianna Lindeman finished with 14 set assists and five digs.  Maya Heinitz added seven kills and four ace serves.

St Mary will be on the road on Thursday, September 2nd at Mitchell Christian.

Quarrier Volleyball Notches Win at Elk Point

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team continued their strong play to start the season with a match win in Elk Point against the Huskies on Tuesday, August 31st.  Dell Rapids dropped their first two matches of the season in close battles, and have since won four of their last five.

Tuesday’s match was another close battle between two pretty evenly matched teams.  The very opening set went back-and-forth and needed extra points to determine a winner.  The Quarriers eventually got the rally at the end to secure the 29-27 victory.  The second set was another close battle.  The two teams were tied 17-17 before Dell Rapids went on a run to lead 22-19.  The Quarriers took the second set 25-23.  The Huskies got on a roll midway through the third set.  They jumped out to a 21-13 lead and won the set 25-19 to force a fourth set.  The fourth set went the Quarrier’s way.  They got out to a 13-7 lead eventually pushing it to 18-9.  Elk Point-Jefferson made a little run, but Dell Rapids won the set 25-21 and took the match 3-1.

Kenzie Garry led the Quarrier attack with 18 kills.  JoJo Henry had 12 kills, and Sophi Randall added 10 kills.  Riley Hill and Lexi Ingalls had their serves working well in the match.  Hill had six ace serves, and Ingalls had five.  Randall was strong up front defensively with 10 blocks, and Clara Justice had six.  Ingalls led the team with 17 digs.  Garry and Henry both had 16 digs each, and Hill finished with 13.  Hill and Randall both had 17 set assists as well.

Dell Rapids (4-3) will travel to Sioux Falls to play the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Thursday, September 2nd.

Cardinal and Quarrier Cross Country Teams Compete at MCM Invite

Both the Dell Rapids St Mary and Dell Rapids cross country teams took part in the McCook Central/Montrose Invitational at the McCook Country Club on Tuesday, August 31st.

For the girls race, the Cardinals finished seventh as a team with a total of 64 points.  The Quarriers finished ninth just one point behind at 65 points.   Adisen Stadem (DR) had a 12th place finish in a time of 23:15.00.  Cami Wolles (St Mary) was just outside the top 20 at 22nd with a time of 23:51.94.  Elizabeth Price (DR) had time of 24:37.15.  Madison Reiff (St Mary) finished at 25:02.59.  Sierra Klein (St Mary) had a time of 25:06.34.  Peyton VanZee (DR) finished in 27:02.61.

For the boys, the Cardinals finished 11th as a team with 106 points.  The Quarriers did not have enough runners to qualify for team points.  Noah Reiff (St Mary) had a time of 21:13.61.  Seth Roemen (St Mary) was just seconds behind him at 21:22.96.  West Mason (DR) finished in 22:12.54.  Gabe Nelson (St Mary) had a time of 28:28.19.

Both the Cardinals and Quarriers will be at the Jesse James Invite at River Ridge Golf Course on Tuesday, September 7th.

Peters 6th for Mustang Cross Country at MCM Invite

Brie Peters had a sixth place finish for the Tri-Valley Mustang cross country team at the McCook Central/Montrose Invitational on Tuesday, August 31st.  Peters finished with a time of 22:00.18 in the varsity race.

Lizzy Dahl had a 10th place finish in the JV race with a time of 20:29.24.  Gwen Peters had a time of 22:39.74.  Isabella Mack finished in 27:10.25.

There were no boys that ran in the varsity race.  Teagin Gacke was second in the JV race at 17:01.73.  Hunter Sargent finished in 23:31.05.

Tri-Valley will be at the Jesse James Invitational at River Ridge Golf Course on Tuesday, September 7th.

West Central Golf Team Has Another Strong Tournament

The West Central Trojan boys golf team had another strong tournament finishing third at the Charger Invite at Spring Creek Golf Course on Tuesday, August 31st.  The Trojans had a total of 321.  Sioux Falls Christian placed first with 317, and Vermillion was second at 320.

Three players finished in the top 15 on the day.  Trey Even was fourth with a 77.  Peyton Bettcher was eighth with a 79, and Anthony Lanham placed 10th with a round of 81.  Kamden Zomer had a round of 84.  Cole Miles finished at 87, and Connor Eisenbeisz had a 96.

The Trojans will be at the Parkston Invite at the Lakeview Municipal Golf Course on Friday, September 3rd.

Mustang Golf 10th at Charger Invite

The Tri-Valley Mustang boys golf team finished with a team score of 371, putting them 10th in the team standings at the Charger Invite at Spring Creek Golf Course on Tuesday, August 31st.  Sioux Falls Christian was first at 317 with Vermillion second at 320 and West Central third at 321.

Josh Leiseth had a round of 86.  Riley Carlson had a 93.  Lance DeWitt and Mayson Rise both had rounds of 96, and Carson Sanders finished with a round of 103.

The Mustangs will be at the Vermillion Invite at The Bluffs Golf Course on Thursday, September 9th.
