PBR Drops Two Games to Gamecocks

Dell Rapids PBR finished a suspended game and then played a regularly scheduled game against the Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks on Sunday, July 10th.  The resumed game was suspended from June 9th.  The Gamecocks won both games, taking the first one 8-4 and then the second 15-0.

Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks 8, Dell Rapids PBR 4

In the opening game that was suspended in the sixth inning, PBR found themselves trailing 6-1.  The Gamecocks had a run in the first, two in the second, and single runs in third, fourth, and fifth innings.  PBR had a run in the bottom of the second.  Trey Randel had an RBI double.  Dell Rapids then scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 6-2.  Randel had another RBI, this time with a ground out.  Both teams scored two times in the eighth inning.  Teagan Schlimgen had a solo home run, and Tanner Solberg had an RBI sacrifice fly.

Schlimgen had two hits, one a home run, and an RBI.  Tim Wilhelmson had two hits.  Randel added a double and two RBIs.  Solberg also had an RBI.  Grant Sweeter pitched five innings and allowed six runs, three earned, on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Dale Solberg pitched four innings and allowed two unearned runs on two hits with four strikeouts.

Humboldt/Hartford 15, Dell Rapids PBR 0

In the regularly scheduled game between the two teams, the Gamecocks scored in every inning and held PBR to just five hits total.  Humboldt/Hartford had two runs in the first, four in the second, one in the third, six in the fourth, and two in the fifth.  The Gamecocks had a total of 19 hits in the game.

Schlimgen had a double.  Riley Hoffman, Beau Behrend, Conner Spindler, and Randel all had a single.  T. Solberg pitched two innings and allowed one earned run on three hits with a walk.  D. Solberg pitched one inning and allowed six runs, four earned, on five hits and two walks.  Weston Hanson pitched an inning and allowed eight earned runs on 11 hits.

Colton Legion Held to One Run Against Vermillion

Vermillion Post 1 defeated the Colton legion baseball team 18-1 on Monday, July 11th in Colton.  Vermillion scored in every inning but the first inning and held Colton to just three hits.

After a scoreless first inning, Vermillion scored six times in the top of the second inning and three in the third for a 9-0 lead.  Colton got a run in the bottom of the third.  Riley Carlson had a single and an error by the center fielder allowed Tanner VanAsselt to score.  Vermillion would add two more runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth inning.

Carlson, T. VanAsselt, and Nathan Madison each had a single in the game.  Carlson pitched two innings and allowed six runs, two earned, on five hits and four walks.  Noah Haynes also pitched two innings and allowed 11 runs, nine earned, on 10 hits and a walk with a strikeout.  Derek VanAsselt pitched an inning and allowed an unearned run on a hit and walk with a strikeout.

Tri-Valley White 14U Drops Two in Region 4A

Tri-Valley White 14U lost both of their games in the Region 4A tournament in Parker on Monday, July 11th.  Tri-Valley had games against West Central and Madison Black.

West Central 16, Tri-Valley White 1

In the opening game of the tournament, West Central scored in every inning in a 16-1 win over Tri-Valley.  West Central scored four runs in the first, one in the second, nine in the third, and two more in the fourth to end the game on the 15-run rule.

Matthew Cypher scored the only run for Tri-Valley in the top of the fourth on a passed ball. Cypher also had two hits in the game.  Noah Eggert had a double.  Brady Jewett and Austin Puetz both had a single.  Landen Jensen pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed 14 runs, six earned, on 10 hits with four walks and a strikeout.

Madison Black 14, Tri-Valley White 4

In an elimination game, Madison used an 11-run second inning for a 14-4 win.

Tri-Valley held a lead after scoring a run in the top of the first.  Blaine Wiezoreck had an RBI single.  Madison scored three times in the bottom of the first for a 3-1 lead.  Tri-Valley tied the game in the top of the second.  Jensen had an RBI single, and Sullivan Snethen scored on a passed ball to make the score 3-3.  Madison then had their 11-run bottom of the second to lead 14-3.  Cooper Nielson had an RBI single in the top of the fifth.

Wiezoreck had two hits and an RBI.  Nielson and Jensen both had a single and an RBI.  Puetz and Sharpe each had a single.  Jewett pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed 14 runs, three earned, on eight hits and five walks with a strikeout.

Madison Broncos Pull Away from Wood Ducks

The Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks held a 6-5 lead after the top of the fourth inning, but the Madison Broncos pulled away for a 14-7 win on Sunday, July 10th.

Madison held a 4-2 lead after two innings of play.  The Wood Ducks took the lead in the top of the fourth inning at 6-5.  Madison, however, took control of the game from that point.  They tied the game 6-6 in the bottom of the fourth and then had a three-run fifth for a 9-6 advantage.  The Broncos then outscored the Wood Ducks 5-1 in the seventh and eighth innings for the win.

The Wood Ducks got one more run in the eighth, however the Broncos went on to score five more runs combined in the seventh and eighth innings, helping them to run away with a 14-7 victory over the Wood Ducks.

Gage Nelson had three hits and an RBI.  Nathan Adrian, Preston Riddle, and JJ Jesson all had two hits each.  Adrian and Jesson also had an RBI.  Riddle pitched five innings and allowed nine runs on six hits with four strikeouts.  Logan Colwill pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits with one strikeout.

Tri-Valley Maroon 14U Season Ends in Region 5A Tournament

Tri-Valley Maroon 14U season came to an end at the Region 5A tournament in Madison on Monday, July 11th.  Tri-Valley finished 1-2 in their three games in the tournament.

Dell Rapids 16, Tri-Valley Maroon 3

In the opening game of the tournament on Friday, July 8th, Dell Rapids broke a 3-3 tie with 13 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 16-3 win.  Dell Rapids scored the first three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Tri-Valley tied the game in the top of the second.  Tristen Bunde had an RBI single.  Denton Bicknase reached on an error that scored Bunde, and Mason Hemme had an RBI ground out.

Bunde had a hit and an RBI.  Treyson Richter and Parker Hemme both had a single.  M. Hemme and Bicknase each had an RBI.

Tri-Valley Maroon 19, Lennox 13s 4

On Saturday, July 9th, Tri-Valley held off elimination with a big 19-4 win over Lennox.  Tri-Valley jumped on Lennox for eight runs in the top of the first inning.  They got five more in the second, and then three runs each in the third and fourth innings.  Lennox scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the third.

Bunde had three hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Bicknase finished with two hits and two RBIs.  Gage Egger had two hits and an RBI.  Kaiden Bernards and Parker Atwood both had a hit and two RBIs.  M. Hemme and P. Hemme both added a single.  Myles DeWitt had an RBI.

Bunde pitched two innings and allowed two hits with three strikeouts.  Bernards pitched 1 1/3 innings and recorded a strikeout.  Egger pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed four runs, none of them earned, on three hits and two walks with a strikeout.

Dell Rapids 9, Tri-Valley Maroon 5

Tri-Valley and Dell Rapids met again in an elimination game on Monday, July 11th.

Tri-Valley struck first with two runs in the top of the second.  Dylan Christensen scored on a balk, and Jackson Williams had an RBI ground out.  They would add two more runs in the top of the third.  Atwood had an RBI ground out, and Egger had an RBI sacrifice fly to give Tri-Valley a 4-0 lead.

Dell Rapids cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the third, and then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs.  Tri-Valley tied the game 5-5 with a run in the top of the sixth when Bernards scored on an error.  Dell Rapids, however, scored four times in the bottom of the sixth for the 9-5 win.

Bernards had the only hit for Tri-Valley in the game, a triple.  Atwood, Egger, and Williams all had an RBI.  Bicknase pitched five innings and allowed eight runs, five earned, on nine hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Bernards pitched an inning and allowed an earned run on a hit and walk with a strikeout.

Colton Legion Shut out by Madison

Colton was held to just two hits against Madison Post 25 on Friday, July 8th.  Madison scored in every inning to win 15-0.  Madison scored three in the first inning, three in the second inning, two in the third, and seven more in the fourth.

Aiden Heitkamp and Zach Powell each had a single.  Heitkamp pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed six earned runs on five hits and three walks with a strikeout.  Cole Focken pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed five runs, three earned, on one hit and three walks with three strikeouts.  Riley Carlson allowed four runs, two earned, on three hits and a walk.

Mudcats Keep Rolling, Winning Streak at Eight

The Dell Rapids Mudcats are on a roll as of late, and they won their seventh and eighth straight games with wins in their last two Cornbelt League games.  The Mudcats defeated Flandreau on Thursday, July 7th and Canova on Sunday, July 10th.

Dell Rapids Mudcats 1, Flandreau 0

Dalton Lehnen carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning against Flandreau on Thursday and completed the game and shutout in a 1-0 win.  Lehnen allowed just two hits while striking out 17 Cardinal batters.

The score was tied 0-0 through seven innings of play.  Dell Rapids got the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning.  Kris Regas started the inning with a single.  Regas found himself on third base when Dalton Allen brought him home on an RBI ground out.

Ty Hoglund, Regas, and Lehnen each had a hit in the game.  Allen had the lone RBI.

Dell Rapids Mudcats 2, Canova 0

Regas followed Lehnen’s masterpiece with one of his own on Sunday against Canova.  Regas pitched the 2-0 complete game shutout allowing just five hits while striking out five batters.

The Mudcats got a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Lehnen.  They added another run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Hoglund.

Elijah Story had two of the five hits for the Mudcats.  Hoglund had a double and an RBI.  Lehnen had a single and an RBI.  Chad Hunt added a single and scored a run.

Dell Rapids Legion Splits with Redfield

The seven game winning streak for Dell Rapids legion baseball was snapped in Redfield on Saturday, July 9th.  Redfield won the first game, but Dell Rapids took the second game of the double-header.

Redfield 11, Dell Rapids 6

Dell Rapids fell behind early as Redfield scored five runs in the first two innings.  Jack Henry scored the first run for Dell Rapids on a passed ball in the top of the third.  Redfield got two more runs in the bottom of the inning for a 7-1 lead.

Braden Fersdahl had an RBI single in the top of the fourth, but Redfield responded with a run in the bottom of the inning.  Dell Rapids cut the lead to 8-5 with a three-run fifth.  Treyse Eastman had a two-run double and then scored on a steal of home.  Redfield got all three runs back in the bottom of the sixth.  Will Jaton scored on a double-play ground ball in the top of the seventh.

Landon Ruesink had three hits.  Henry had two hits, one a double.  Joe Rechtenbaugh also had two hits.  Eastman had a double and two RBIs.  Fersdahl had a single and RBI.  CJ Smith and Austin Harvey both had a hit.  Ruesink pitched three innings and allowed seven runs, five earned, on six hits and five walks with five strikeouts.  Dylan Mathis pitched three innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on three hits and two walks.

Dell Rapids 7, Redfield 6

A two-run eighth inning was the difference in a 7-6 win in the second game for Dell Rapids.  They got out to an early 3-0 lead after three innings.  Rechtenbaugh had an RBI double in the top of the second.  Ruesink had an RBI ground out, and Mathis had an RBI single in the top of the third.

Redfield cut the lead to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth.  Each team scored a run in the sixth inning.  Smith had an RBI single for Dell Rapids.  The lead grew to 5-2 in the top of the seventh when Eastman had an RBI single.  Redfield tied the game, 5-5, with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Dell Rapids got two runs in the top of the eighth.  Ruesink had an RBi single, and Henry followed with an RBI single as well for a 7-5 lead.  Redfield scored a run in the bottom of the eighth after a double and error, but the next three batters were retired in order to end the game.

Ruesink had two hits and two RBIs.  Henry. had two hits and one RBI.  Jaton had two hits as well, one a double.  Fersdahl finished with two singles.  Rechtenbaugh finished with a double and RBI.  Smith, Mathis, and Eastman all had a single and RBI.  Harvey added a single.

Eastman pitched five innings and allowed an earned run on one hit and eight walks with six strikeouts.  Jaton pitched three innings and allowed five runs, one earned, on five hits with five strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 16U Splits Four Games in Spearfish

The Dell Rapids 16U baseball team made the long trek across the state to Spearfish and played four games between Friday, July 8th and Sunday, July 10th.  Dell Rapids finished the weekend 2-2.

Spearfish Post 164 16U 4, Dell Rapids 3

Spearfish scored four times in the bottom of the third and earned a 4-3 win over Dell Rapids on Friday.

Quinn Carr had an RBI single in the top of the second to give Dell Rapids a 1-0 lead.  Lincoln Fersdahl added an RBI single in the top of the third for a 2-0 lead.  Spearfish then had their four-run bottom of the third inning.  Dell Rapids got one more run in the top of the fourth when Carr scored on a wild pitch.

Carr and Fersdahl both had a hit and RBI.  Tad Tjaden and Luke Schoolmeester both had two hits each.  Talan Millage also had a hit.  Fersdahl pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed four earned runs on three hits and six walks with nine strikeouts.  Tjaden pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed three walks with four strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 17, Post 320 Shooters 4

Dell Rapids only scored in three innings, but had an eight-run third, two-run fourth, and seven-run sixth in their 17-4 win over Post 320 on Saturday.  Post 320 had a run in the third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth.  Dell Rapids never trailed in the game and finished with 17 total hits.

Cole Ruesink had three hits and two RBIs.  Cooper Frost had three hits and an RBI.  Fersdahl also had three hits.  Tjaden had two hits, one a triple, with four RBIs.  Millage finished with two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Carr had a double and three RBIs.  Stubbe also added a double and three RBIs.  Micah Pickard had a single and an RBi, and Schoolmeester finished with a single.

Carr pitched four innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits and three walks with six strikeouts.  Ruesink pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed an earned run on a hit and two walks.  Frost pitched 1/3 of an inning.

Dell Rapids 16, Post 320 Risers 8

Dell Rapids had another big game, this time against Post 320 Risers, also on Saturday.  They scored in every inning while having a total of 15 hits.  Dell Rapids scored four times in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second for a 6-0 lead.  The Risers scored four runs in the top of the third, with Dell Rapids added another in the bottom of the inning.

Post 320 Risers tied the game, 7-7, in the top of the fourth with three runs.  Dell Rapids broke the tie with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.  After the Risers scored a run in the top of the fifth, Dell Rapids ended the game with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Frost had three hits, one a double, with three RBIs.  Stubbe also finished with three hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Carr added two hits and two RBIs.  Ruesink had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Tjaden had two hits.  Fersdahl had a triple with three RBIs.  Ethan Kringen added a single and three RBIs.  Micah Pickard added a double and two RBIs.

Frost pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on a hit and five walks with four strikeouts.  Millage pitched two innings and allowed four unearned runs with two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Ruesink pitched 2/3 of an inning and had one strikeout.

Spearfish Post 164 16U 11, Dell Rapids 6

Dell Rapids met Spearfish again on Sunday, but Spearfish won again, this time 11-6.  Dell Rapids had a run in the top of the first, but Spearfish had three runs in the bottom of the inning.  The lead was cut to 3-2 after Dell Rapids scored a run in the top of the second.  They then took the lead with three runs in the top of the third.  Spearfish took the lead for good in the bottom of the third with five runs.

Both teams got a run in the fourth inning.  Spearfish added two more in the bottom of the sixth.

Tjaden had three singles and three RBIs.  Frost finished with two hits and two RBIs.  Millage also had two hits, one a double.  Schoolmeester had a single and an RBI.  Fersdahl had a triple.  Stubbe and Konrad Richeal both had a hit.  Richeal pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts.  Tjaden pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed eight runs, five earned, on two hits and 10 walks with five strikeouts.

Hartford Sparx Split in State Tournament

The Hartford Sparx played four games at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls at the state tournament between Friday, July 8th and Sunday, July 10th.  The Sparx split in the four games finishing 2-2.

SD Phoenix 18U 12, Hartford Sparx 2

Hartford allowed seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and couldn’t recover in a 12-2 loss to SD Phoenix 18U on Friday.  The Sparx got the first run of the game in the top of the first on an RBI single by Addy Kramer.  After SD Phoenix scored seven times in the first, they had a run in the second and four more in the third.  Avery Evans had a home run for Hartford in the top of the fourth.

Evans had a home run and an RBI.  Kramer had a single and an RBI.  Grace Harden also had a single.  Harden pitched three innings and allowed five earned runs on three hits and four walks.  Taylor Kunzweiler took the loss pitching two innings and allowed seven earned runs on seven hits and a walk.

Hartford Sparx 7, Yankton Fury Red 18U 3

The Sparx rebounded with a 7-3 win over Yankton Fury Red 18U on Saturday.

Caitlyn Maa had an RBI single for Harford in the top of the first.  Payten Meinke had an RBI single in the top of the second to give the Sparx a 2-0 lead.  Yankton tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second, and then they took the lead in the bottom of the third.

Hartford had a big five-run inning in the top of the fourth.  Harden brought home two with a double.  Evans followed with an RBI single, and Kramer also had an RBI single.  Maa brought home the final run of the inning with a single.

Harden had three hits, two doubles, and two RBIs.  Maa had two hits and two RBIs.  Karmer added two hits and an RBI.  Evans finished with a single and an RBI.  Riley Morrison and Bryten Roth both had two hits, while Jenna Lueth had a single.  Harden pitched four innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Hartford Sparx 2, Fusion Heat 18U 0

In their second game of the day on Saturday, the Sparx got a 2-0 shutout win over Fusion Heat.  Evans had an RBI double, and Kramer had an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning.  Those two runs were enough for Kunzweiler.  She pitched six innings and allowed six hits and two walks while striking out four.

Evans finished with a double and an RBI.  Kramer had two singles and an RBI.  Maa also had two hits, and Harden finished with a single.

Cyclones Red 18U 6, Hartford Sparx 2

The weekend ended for the Sparx on Sunday with a 6-2 loss to Cyclones Red.  The Cyclones scored all six of their runs in the first three innings.  They scored two runs in the bottom of the first, three in the bottom of the second, and one more in the bottom of the third.

Maa had a two-run home run in the top of the fourth for Hartford.  Harden, Karmer, and McKenna Sichmeller all had singles.  Harden pitched two innings and allowed five earned runs on five hits and four walks.  Kunzweiler pitched two innings and allowed an earned run on two hits and a walk.
