West Central Volleyball Back in Win Column

The West Central Trojan volleyball team got themselves back into the win column with a straight set win in Chamberlain on Thursday, September 16th.  The Trojans won by scores of 25-16, 25-16, and 25-11.  The win snapped a five match losing streak for West Central.

Aubree Miller had five kills and three blocks.  McKenna Sichmeller finished with three ace serves and three blocks.  Jenna Lueth had a team-high seven digs, and Hanna Lee finished with 20 set assists.

West Central will play in the Hamlin Tournament on Saturday, September 18th.

Dolphins Stop Cardinal Winning Streak

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals had their four match winning streak snapped by the Deubrook Area Dolphins on Thursday, September 16th.  The Dolphins won in four sets by scores 15-25, 25-8, 25-22, and 25-12.

The Cardinals got out to a quick start taking a 9-4 lead in the opening set.  The lead grew to 18-10 as the Cardinals cruised to a 25-15 set win.   St Mary had an early lead in the second set at 5-3, but the Dolphins then went on a big run.  Deubrook went on a 12-3 run to take a 15-8 lead, and then scored the final 10 points of the set to win 25-8.

The third set was back-and-forth throughout most of the set.  Neither team was able to get a lead of more than two to three points.  The set was tied at 18-18.  The Cardinals then took a 20-18 lead, but the Dolphins finished the set on a 7-2 run for a 25-22 victory.  Deubrook carried that momentum into the fourth set as they built a 10-point lead at 16-6.  The Dolphins took the fourth set 25-12 to win the match.

Courtney Brown finished with 15 kills and 12 digs.  Maya Heinitz had nine kills and nine digs.  Ella Griffin tallied six set assists, three ace serves, three blocks, three digs, and two kills.  Brianna Lindeman had 15 set assists and eight digs, and Madala Hanson had 12 set assists and four digs.  Whitney Warwick added 11 digs, while Josie Baumberger had eight digs.  Brianna Griffin finished with seven kills, two digs, and a block.  Addyson Gilbert had four kills and two blocks as well.

The Cardinals (8-2) will host the Howard Tigers on Tuesday, September 21st.

New Director for Dell Rapids Haven

The Dell Rapids Community Haven program will have a new director at the end of the month.  The Dell Rapids School Board officially approved the hire of Rachel Scholten as the new Haven Director effective September 20th.  This was approved at the board’s regular meeting on Monday, September 13th.

Taylor Delker’s resignation as the current Haven Director was accepted at the same school board meeting.  The resignation will be effective on September 30th.  Delker has been serving as the director since September 2020.  Prior to being promoted to the director position, Delker was the Haven Activities Coordinator.

Cardinal Girls 8th, Boys 9th at Flyer Cross Country Invite

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal cross country team participated in the Flyer Invitational in Freeman on Wednesday, September 15th.  The girls team finished eighth with a total of 76 points.  The boys team was ninth with a total of 95 points.

Cami Wolles had a 26th place finish with a time of 23:54.46.  Lucy Vargas (33rd) had a time of 24:47.66.  Madison Reiff (42nd) finished in 25:18.59.  Sierra Klein (46th) had a time of 25:32.21, and Addy Gilbert (47th) had a time of 25:32.74.

Noah Reiff placed 24th with a time of 20:27.77.  Seth Roemen was 30th with a time of 20:50.23.  Owen Vargas (46th) had a time of 22:10.02.  Gabe Nelson (67th) finished with a time of 28:53.39.

St Mary will stay in Dell Rapids on September 22nd for the Quarrier Invite at Rocky Run Golf Course.

Janet Gross

Janet (Turner) Gross, 78, of Sioux Falls, passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at the Dougherty Hospice House. Visitation will begin at 12 noon on Friday, September 17 at Kahler-Brende Funeral Home in Dell Rapids, with the family present from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Her funeral service will begin on Saturday morning, September 18 at 10:00 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. We would like to honor Janet’s memory by wearing her favorite color of pink, if you so desire. www.kahlerfh.com

Janet Elaine Turner was born on November 7, 1942 in Sioux Falls, the daughter of Charles (Eddie) and Mabel (Tystad) Turner. She grew up in Dell Rapids and graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1961.

After graduation, she attended business school in Omaha and then moved to Minneapolis where she worked at a bank. She returned to Sioux Falls where she started a family and worked various jobs throughout the years. She retired from Balance Systems where she had been employed for several years.

The joy of Janet’s life was her husband Pete, whom she married on August 31, 1996. Janet had a big heart and never had a bad word to say about anyone. She loved the color pink, Elvis Presley, and TV Westerns. She was happiest spending time with her family and traveling with her husband Pete to meet her “Cowboys”.

Janet is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Peter (Pete) Gross; her children Troy (Becky) Mielitz, Tammy (Greg) Young, Kandice (Steve) Coomes, Todd Mielitz, and Melissa (Willie) Tschetter, all of Sioux Falls; her 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild; her siblings Rose (Tom) West, Chuck (Jane) Turner, Paula (John) Murray; 3 nephews, 1 niece, and several great nieces and nephews.

Trojan Volleyball Drops Last Two Matches

The West Central Trojan volleyball team fell in their last two matches.  They hosted the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Thursday, September 9th.  The Trojans then traveled to Baltic on Tuesday, September 14th.

Sioux Falls Christian remained undefeated with a straight set win over the Trojans on September 9th.  The Chargers won by set scores of 25-2, 25-8, and 25-14.

West Central put together a good match against the Baltic Bulldogs, but unfortunately did not come away with the win.  The Bulldogs were able to build a six-point lead in the latter portion of the set at 18-12.  West Central rallied within a point at 19-18, but the Bulldogs extended the lead to 24-19 before winning the set 25-21.  The two teams played close in the second set with Baltic leading 12-10 before they went on a big run to win the second set 25-12.  The Trojans rallied from a 22-17 deficit in the third set by scoring the final 8 points to win 25-22 and force a fourth set.  The Bulldogs raced out to a 10-4 lead in the fourth set.  West Central chipped away at the lead tying the game at 17-17.  The set was tied again at 20-20, 21-21, and 22-22, but Baltic scored the final three points for the set and match win at 25-22.

The Trojans look to get back into the win column when they travel to Chamberlain on Thursday, September 16th.

West Central Girls Soccer Posts Two More Wins

The West Central Trojan girls soccer team earned two more wins in their last two matches and remains unbeaten in the 2021 season.

On Saturday, September 11th, the Trojans traveled to Groton to play the Tigers.  After a 0-0 first half, West Central got a second-half goal from Molli Thornton on a header that was assisted by Jaci Travis.  That was the only goal scored in the match.  Cambell Fischer had four saves on the day.

West Central then traveled to Dakota Valley on Tuesday, September 14th, for a match against the Panthers.  Again the first half was scoreless.  The tie was broken on a goal by Rylee Haldeman assisted by Sadie Berg.  The Trojans headed home with a 1-0 victory as Fischer posted another shutout with four more saves.

The Trojans have not allowed a goal since August 20th.  West Central will look to keep the unbeaten season going on Thursday, September 16th in Garretson.  They will then host Sioux Falls Christian on Tuesday, September 21st.

Quarriers Cruise Past Canton in Volleyball Action

The Dell Rapids Quarriers cruised to a straight set win over the Canton C-Hawks at home on Tuesday, September 14th.  Dell Rapids won by set scores of 25-12, 25-20, and 25-13.  It was just the second home match of the season and the second time Dell Rapids has defeated Canton this year.

In the opening set, the first half was a close battle.  The two teams were tied 10-10, but that’s when the Quarriers caught fire.  Dell Rapids scored nine straight points to build a 19-10 lead and finished the set with a 25-12 win.

The second set was a bit closer.  Neither team was able to build a lead of more than two or three points early.  The score was tied 13-13, but Dell Rapids then scored seven straight points for a 20-13 lead.  Canton pulled within four at 23-19, but Dell Rapids finished the set with a 25-20 win.

The Quarriers continued to ride the momentum in the third set.  Once again they turned a slim 13-11 lead into a 10-point lead with eight straight points.  Dell Rapids closed out the third set at 25-13 to win the match.

Sophi Randall finished the match with eight kills, four blocks, four digs, and seven set assists.  Kenzie Garry had seven kills, two blocks, and seven digs.  JoJo Henry had five kills, eight ace serves, and nine digs.  Riley Hill had a team-high 12 set assists, along with eight digs, two kills, and an ace serve.   Clara Justice had two kills and two blocks.

Dell Rapids will travel to Tri-Valley on Thursday, September 16th.

Garretson Girls Soccer Suffers Losses in Last Two Matches

The Garretson Blue Dragon girls soccer team suffered losses in their last two matches.

On Saturday, September 11th, Garretson traveled to Dakota Valley.  The Blue Dragons fell to the Panthers by a score of 2-1.  Kylie Christensen scored off of a corner kick by Jenna VanHolland in the game.  VanHolland had five shots on goal.  Christensen had three shots on goal.  Madison Ljunggren had two, and Joely Sterud and Jordyn Williams both had one shot on goal.

“We were aggressive right off the bat and held with them the entire game.  We were able to possess the ball in the midfield and played solid defense,” said head coach Amber Williamson.

The Blue Dragons again took to the road on Tuesday, September 14th.  They traveled to Vermillion and fell to the Tanagers 5-1.  The match was 2-1 at halftime in favor of Vermillion.

“We were on our offensive half possessing the ball for the majority of the game, but could not find the back of the net,” said Williamson.

Cortney Rogich had 10 saves in goal.  The lone goal for Garretson came from Raegen Altman and was assisted by Williams.  Pagie Sterud, J. Sterud, and VanHolland each had two shots on goal.  Ljunggren and Morgan Damman each had a one shot on goal.

Garretson will host West Central on Thursday, September 16th, which will also be parent’s night.

Quarrier Cross Country Team Races at Charger Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarrier cross country team ran in the Sioux Falls Christian Charger Invite at Yankton Trails Park in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, September 14th.

Dell Rapids had a total of five runners participate in the varsity races, and neither the boys nor girls team had enough runners to have a team score.

Adisen Stadem placed 19th individually with a time of 21:49.42.  Elizabeth Prize was 41st with a time of 23:19.22.  Peyton VanZee had a time of 24:55.99.

Josh Fletcher placed ninth with a time of 17:42.82.  Jack Montgomery finished with a time of 21:05.84.

Dell Rapids will host the Quarrier Invite at Rocky Run Golf Course on Wednesday, September 22nd.
