Canton Snaps Trojan Four-Game Win Streak

The Canton C-Hawks snapped a four-game winning streak by the West Central Trojans on Friday, October 1st.  Canton won the defensive, low-scoring game 6-0 at Canton High School.  The Trojans now fall to 4-2 on the season.

Gavin Koch finished 13-30 passing for 135 yards and two interceptions.  Owen Heath had five catches for 89 yards.  Braden Dierickx had six receptions for 40 yards.  Justin Zirpel had 19 carries for 30 yards.

Logan Maras had 11 tackles to lead the defense.  Caden Hall had eight tackles.  Dalton Mulder finished with six tackles, and Chet Carda, Thomas Berg, and Dierickx all had five tackles each.

The Trojans travel to Vermillion to play the Tanagers on Friday, October 8th.

Tri-Valley Blanked by Madison at Home

The Madison Bulldogs shut out the Tri-Valley Mustangs 40-0 on Friday, October 1st.  Once the Bulldogs got on the board, the scores kept coming for Madison.

The first score didn’t come until :40 left in the first quarter, but Madison would had two more touchdowns in the second quarter for a 21-0 halftime lead.  The Bulldogs had two more touchdowns in the third quarter and another in the fourth quarter for the 40-0 win.

Tri-Valley was held to just 161 yards of total offense, 138 rushing yards and 23 passing yards.  Meanwhile, Madison had 422 yards of offense, 255 rushing yards and 167 passing yards.  The Mustangs also turned the ball over four times in the game to Madison’s one turnover.

Isaac McFarland had 12 carries for 76 yards in the game.  Jaden Siemonsma finished with nine carries for 29 yards, and Carter Sorenson had five carries for 26 yards.  Eli McFarland was 4-10 passing for 23 yards and two interceptions.  Tyson VanDerVliet had three catches for 24 yards.

I. McFarland also led the defense with eight tackles.  Aiden Larson had five tackles and a sack.  Seth Sundal also had five tackles.  Brandon Havlovic had three tackles and a sack, and E. McFarland also had three tackles.

The Mustangs (3-3) will travel to Lennox on Saturday, October 9th for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff.

Mustangs Fall in Road Match at Salem

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team lost a road match at McCook Central/Montrose on Thursday, September 30th.  The Cougars defeated the Mustangs in straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-17, and 25-9.

Erica Bicknase finished the match with six kills.   Madelyn Wenzel had three kills, and  Ava Pearson and Lauren Grinde both had two kills each.  Wenzel had two blocks to lead the team.   Nevaeh Grann  finished with eight  set assists, and Brookelyn Stieben had five assists.  Allyson Haga had 15 digs.

The Mustangs will host Wagner on Saturday, October 2nd.

Quarrier Volleyball Rallies for Exciting Win over Lennox

After dropping the first two sets of the match, the Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team rallied for three straight set wins to defeat the Lennox Orioles on Thursday, September 30th.

Four of the five sets could have been won by either team.  The opening set was back-and-forth over the first half.  The two teams were tied multiple times, including at 13-13.  The Quarriers built a three point lead at 16-13, 18-15, and then again 21-18, but Lennox outscored Dell Rapids 7-1 to win the opening set 25-22.

Lennox used that momentum to build a 15-9 lead through the midway point of the second set.   The Quarriers chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the set at 23-23.  Dell Rapids took the lead 24-23, but Lennox tied the score 24-24.  After another one-point lead for Dell Rapids at 25-24, the Orioles scored the final three points for a 27-25 win and a 2-0 match lead.

Momentum then shifted to Dell Rapids in the third set.  The Quarriers jumped out to a 9-1 lead and never looked back.  Dell Rapids kept rolling in the third set and won 25-7.  Dell Rapids kept the run going into the fourth set building an early 8-2 lead.  Lennox was able to cut the Dell Rapids lead to a single point a couple of times in the fourth set, but the Quarriers never lost the lead.  Dell Rapids won the fourth set 25-19 to force a fifth set.

Lennox delivered the first blow in the fifth set getting an early 4-1 lead.  Dell Rapids got within a point at 7-6 and 9-8, but both times the Orioles were able to increase the lead.  It wasn’t until Dell Rapids pulled within a point at 11-10 that momentum shifted back to the Quarriers.  Dell Rapids tied the score at 11-11, and then finished the match on a 4-1 run for the 15-12 win.

Three Quarriers had double digit kills on the night.  JoJo Henry had 16 kills, and Sophi Randall and Kenzie Garry both had 10 kills.  Henry also had a team-high four ace serves.  Garry had three ace serves, and Lauryn Kloth and Riley Hill both had two.  Kloth finished with seven blocks up front with Hill and Randall both finishing with five blocks.  Four players had double digit digs.  Emma Molskness had a team-high 22 digs.  Lexi Ingalls finished with 19, Henry had 17, and Hill added 11 digs.  Hill also led the team with 31 set assists, and Randall had 17.

Dell Rapids (12-8) will travel to Dakota Valley High School on Monday, October 4th, and then host Vermillion on Tuesday, October 5th.

St Mary Volleyball Cruises to Home Win over Lake Preston

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team had no problem with the Lake Preston Divers on Thursday, September 30th.  The Cardinals got a straight set win by scores of 25-10, 25-15, and 25-17.

The Cardinals held just a three-point, 10-7, lead to start the first set.  They then went on a big run outscoring the Divers 15-3 to win the first set.  St Mary got out to a quicker start taking a 10-2 lead in the second set.  The lead grew to 10 points at 19-9, and the Cardinals put the second set away at 25-15.  The two teams were tied 9-9 in the third set and traded points until it was 15-15.  St Mary then closed out the match on a 10-2 run for the win.

Courtney Brown had 16 kills and nine digs.  Addy Gilbert had eight kills and a block.  Maya Heinitz finished with seven kills and 10 digs.  Brianna Lindeman had a team-high 17 set assists, three ace serves, and a block.  Josie Baumberger had nine digs and an ace serve.  Ella Griffin had four set assists and two ace serves, and Jacey Tebay finished with three ace serves.

St Mary will travel to Castlewood on Monday, October 4th and then host Garretson on Tuesday, September 5th.

West Central Girls Soccer Regular Season Ends with Win

The West Central Trojan girls soccer team ended their regular season with two matches against Class AA teams.

On Tuesday, September 28th, the Trojans traveled to Sioux Falls and played the O’Gorman Knights.  After a scoreless first half, O’Gorman got a goal in the second half and beat the Trojans 1-0, giving West Central their first loss of the season.

West Central then hosted the Mitchell Kernals in their final regular season match on Thursday, September 30th.  The Trojans and Kernals ended the first half in a 1-1 tie.  West Central then outscored Mitchell 3-1 in the second half for a 4-2 win.  The Trojans ended the 2021 regular season with an 11-1-1 record.

The South Dakota Class A State tournament first round matches will be played on Tuesday, October 5th.  The Trojans will be the #1 seed in the tournament will play on Saturday, October 9th.

Trojan Cross Country Teams Finish Seventh in Lennox

Both the girls and boys cross country teams finished seventh for the West Central Trojans in Lennox on Thursday, September 30th.

The girls finished with a total of 112 points.  Sioux Falls Christian was first followed by Lennox and then Ethan/Parkston.  Maelee Krempges placed 19th with a time of 21:09.90.  Aubrey Borns (26th) had a time of 21:33.93.  Drew Caffrey (36th) finished in 22:00.77.  Elizabeth Johnson (42nd) had a time of 22:26.68, and Ellie McDonald (51st) finished in 22:57.96.

The boys team finished with 117 total points.  Sioux Falls Christian was first in the boys division as well followed by Milbank and then Lennox.  Ben Strunk placed 19th in a time of 17:42.53.  Jacob Peterson was 27th (18:17.36) followed by Johnathon Roth at 28th with a time of 18:18.69.  Griffin Stallman (52nd) had a time of 19:32.41.  Josh Wagner (57th) finished in a time of 19:44.45, Blake Stark (59th) had a time of 19:48.78, and Kyper Hilger (67th) completed in 20:19.13.

The Trojans will complete in the Dak-12 Conference Meet in Dell Rapids on Thursday, October 7th.

Peters and Gacke Race in Lennox for Mustang Cross Country

Brie Peters and Teagin Gacke represented the Tri-Valley Mustang varsity cross country team at the Lennox Oriole Invite on Thursday, September 30th.

Peters had a 17th place finish in a time of 21:03.77.  Gacke placed 60th with a time of 19:49.56.

Tri-Valley is scheduled to be at the Howard Invite on Monday, October 4th and then the Dak-12 Conference Meet in Dell Rapids on Thursday, October 7th.

Fletcher Places in Top 10, Quarriers Race at Lennox Cross Country Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarrier cross country teams ran in the Lennox Invite on Thursday, September 30th.

Josh Fletcher and an eighth place finish with a time of 17:11.04.  The boy’s team finished with a total of 189 points.  Jackson Peppel (63rd) finished in 20:06.24.  Weston Mason (71st) had a time of 20:33.81, and Jack Montgomrey (73rd) had a time of 20:38.04.

The girls team had a total of 197 points.  Adisen Stadem (32nd) had a time of 21:48.13.  Madyn Lacey (44th) finished with a time of 22:35.58.  Elizabeth Price (69th) completed in 23:50.88.  Peyton ZanZee (73rd) had a time of 24:00.07.  Cariss Montgomery finished in 26:24.13.

The Quarriers will be running the Dak-12 Conference meet on Thursday, October 7th, which will be held at Rocky Run Golf Course in Dell Rapids.

Boys 4th, Girls 5th for Cardinal Cross Country at Colman-Egan Invite

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls and boys cross country teams competed at the Colman-Egan Invite on Wednesday, September 29th.  The event was held at the Sunrise Ridge Golf Course in Colman.

The girls team was fifth with a total of 43 points.  They finished just three points behind Oldham-Ramona/Rutland.  Lucy Vargas placed 14th with a time of 23:39.25, just beating teammate Cami Wolles, who finished 15th in a time of 23:39.48.  Addy Gilbert (23rd) had a time of 24:58.49.  Madison Reiff (24th) finished in 25:02.18, and Sierra Klein (26th) had a time of 25:04.21.

The boys team had a fourth place finish with a total of 37 points.  Seth Roemen and Noah Reiff finished 14th and 15th respectively.  Roemen had a time of 20:05.98, and Reiff finished in 20:22.82.  Owen Vargas (21st) had a time of 21:06.92.  Gabe Nelson (36th) finished in 25:20.84.

The Cardinals will be at the Dakota Valley Conference Meet on Wednesday, October 6th in White.
