Hartford/Humboldt Legion Notches Win over Salem

Hartford/Humboldt put the game out of reach in the seventh inning in an 8-1 victory over Salem on Wednesday, July 20th.

Hartford/Humboldt scored right away in the first inning.  Loren Jacobsen had an RBI double to get the scoring started.  They added two more runs in the top of the third.  Connor Siemonsma scored on an error, and Deuce Sherrard scored on a dropped third strike.  Hartford/Humboldt extended the lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth after an RBI single by Bennett Sebert.

Salem was able to get on the board with a run in the bottom of the fifth.  The score stayed 4-1 until the top of the seventh.  Hartford/Humboldt then scored four times to put the game out of reach.  Jack Linneman brought home two with a single.  Derek Renken also had a two-run single.

Sebert had two hits and two RBIs.  Jacobson finished with a triple and two RBIs.  Linneman had a double and two RBIs.  Renken finished with a single and two RBIs as well.  Sherrard, Braden Herr, Gavin Koch, and Siemonsma all had a hit.  Seth Gabbert pitched five innings and allowed an unearned run on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts.  Koch pitched two innings of no hit baseball.

Tea Gold Steals Win from Tri-Valley 16U

Tea Gold scored two times in the top of the seventh to steal a 6-5 win over Tri-Valley 16U on Wednesday, July 20th.

Tea grabbed the early lead with two runs in the top of the first.  Tri-Valley got a run back in the bottom of the first when Alex Wingen scored on a passed ball.  Tea scored two more runs in the top of the second and led 4-1 after two innings.

Tri-Valley picked up two runs in the bottom of the third.  Everett Althoff and an RBI triple and then scored on an error to make it a 4-3 game.  They then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Holden Rise reached on an error that scored Althoff and Carter Sorenson to give Tri-Valley the 5-4 advantage.  Tea took the lead back with two runs after two outs in the top of the seventh.

Althoff had two hits, one a triple, and an RBI.  Holden Foster and Sorenson both had singles.  Wingen pitched six innings and allowed four earned runs on four hits and five walks with four strikeouts.  Althoff pitched one inning and allowed two earned runs on a hit and two walks.

West Central 16U Splits Doubleheader with Lennox

West Central 16U split a doubleheader with Lennox on Tuesday, July 19th.  The first game went to West Central 8-7, but the second game was won by Lennox 2-6.

West Central 8, Lennox 7

West Central scored the first eight runs in the three innings and then held off a Lennox rally to win the first game.  Jesse Jost scored on an error, Will Nester had an RBI sacrifice fly, and Cain Grocott had an RBI single in the top of the first for a 3-0 lead.

Jost had an RBI single, Rayce Whiting scored on a wild pitch, and Maison Schuldt had an RBI single in the top of the second to extend the lead to 6-0.  Cade Vanderwoude had a bases-loaded walk, and Whiting had an RBI sacrifice fly in the third.  West Central led 8-0 after they were done hitting in the top of the third.  Lennox put together a big rally in the bottom of the third scoring five times.  They added a run in the fifth and sixth inning.  The tying run was on third and winning run on second with two outs, but Keaton Vessells got a strikeout to end the game.

Grocott finished with two hits and an RBI.  Jost, Schuldt, and Whiting all had a hit and an RBI.  Vessells and Carter Evans both added singles.  Nester and Vanderwoude added an RBI.  Grocott pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed five runs, three earned, on two hits and four walks with a strikeout.  Vessells pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts.

Lennox 6, West Central 2

Lennox built a 3-0 lead which was enough to take the second game.  They scored two runs in the bottom of the second and another in the third to lead 3-0 after three innings.  Nester scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth.  Lennox responded with two more runs in the bottom of the inning.  Cyrus Maras also scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth inning.  Lennox also scored their last run in the fifth.

Jost had the only hit in the game for West Central.  Vanderwoude pitched five innings and allowed six earned runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts.

Tea Bolts Beat Tri-Valley 16U

The Tea Bolts scored in every inning but one in a 14-9 win over Tri-Valley 16U on Tuesday, July 19th.

Tea built an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first.  Tri-Valley cut into the lead in the top of the second.  Ledger Burggraff and Benjamin Myhre both had RBI singles to make the score 3-2.  Tri-Valley then took the lead in the top of the third.  Hunter Foster had an RBI double to tie the game 3-3.  Burggraff brought home two more with a single for a 5-3 lead.

Tea, however, would score the next 11 runs.  They regained the lead in the bottom of the third with five runs.  They had a single run in the fourth and fifth innings, and then scored four more times in the sixth.  Tea lead 14-5 heading into the top of the seventh inning.  Burggraff brought home another run with a single.  Myhre had a two-run single, and Burggraff later scored on a passed ball.

Burggraff had three hits and four RBIs.  Myhre also had three hits with three RBIs.  Everett Althoff finished with two hits.  Foster had a double and an RBI.  Carter Sorenson, H Rise, and Levi Kretzschmar all had singles.

Cody Lofswold pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed eight runs, four earned, on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts.  Sorenson pitched three innings and allowed six runs, three earned, on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Alex Wingen pitched 1/3 of an inning and allowed a walk with a strikeout.

Colton Legion Falls to Salem

Colton scored the first run, but Salem had six unanswered runs the rest of the game for a 6-1 on Tuesday, July 19th.

Riley Carlson had a lead-off single in the bottom of the first inning.  Cole Focken had a double to move Carlson to third base, and then Nathan Madison had an RBI ground out to score Carlson for an early 1-0 lead.  Colton kept the 1-0 lead for two innings.  Salem then scored two runs in the top of the third inning and three more in the top of the fourth for a 5-1 lead.  They would add another run in the top of the sixth.  Colton was held to just three more hits after the first inning.

Focken finished with two hits, one a double.  Madison had a hit and an RBI.  Carlson and Kaden Egger both had a single as well.  Egger pitched six innings and allowed six earned runs on 12 hits with six strikeouts.  Noah Haynes pitched one inning and allowed two hits.

Dell Rapids Legion Rallies Late, but Falls in Extra Innings

Dell Rapids took advantage of three errors by Volga in the sixth inning to tie the game, but Volga rallied in extra innings for a 5-2 win on Tuesday, July 19th.  Volga advances to the championship game of the Region 2B tournament on Thursday.  Dell Rapids faces elimination on Wednesday.

Parker Puetz got things going right away for Volga with a lead-off solo home run in the top of t he first inning.  Volga added another run in the top of the third on a dropped third strike passed ball.  The score remained 2-0 in favor of Volga until the bottom of the sixth.

Mason Stubbe reached on an error to start the inning for Dell Rapids, the first error committed by Volga in the inning.  After Stubbe stole second, Brayden Pankonen had an infield single to short stop.  The throw over to first, while late, kicked away from the first baseman allowing Stubbe to score.  That was the second error of the inning.  As Volga attempted to make a play at the plate on Stubbe, Pankonen advanced towards second.  The throw by the catcher to second kicked into center field, the third error, and allowed Pankonen to move to third.  Landon Ruesink followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to center to tie the game.

Dell Rapids put together a small rally in the bottom of the seventh.  Aiden Boechler had a one-out single and then stole second.  Will Jaton lined a ball to right field in which Conner Gross made a diving catch to keep the game tied.  That play seemed to shift momentum to Volga.  Boden Schiller hit a two-run double, and Gross had an RBI sacrifice fly to give Volga a 5-2 lead in the top of the eighth.

Dell Rapids was held to just two hits.  Pankonen and Boechler each had a single.  Ruesink finished with an RBI.  Jaton pitched seven innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits and four walks with three strikeouts.  Ruesink pitched one inning and allowed one hit and two walks.

Dell Rapids Legion Advances to Semifinals in Region 2B

Dell Rapids won two games on the first day of the Region 2B Legion Baseball Tournament at Rickeman Field on Monday, July 18th.  While it wasn’t easy in either game, Dell Rapids will play Volga in the semifinals on Tuesday, July 19th.

Dell Rapids 17, Flandreau 9

Dell Rapids scored nine times in the final two innings to beat Flandreau in the opening game of the tournament.  The two teams went back and forth all game long.  Dell Rapids scored a run in the top of the first, but Flandreau tied the game in the bottom of the second.  A three run top of the third inning gave Dell Rapids a 4-1 advantage.  Flandreau responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Dell Rapids then scored four times in the top of the fourth, but once again, Flandreau responded.  Flandreau scored three times in their half of the fourth, and Dell Rapids led 8-6 after four innings of play.  Dell Rapids was held scoreless in the top of the fifth, and Flandreau took their first lead of the game after three runs in the bottom of the inning.  Dell Rapids took control of the game with a seven-run sixth inning, and they would score two more in the top of the seventh.

Joe Rechtenbaugh had three hits and three RBIs.  Will Jaton had two hits, one a triple, and two RBIs.  CJ Smith and Treyse Eastman both had two hits and an RBI.  Austin Harvey finished with a hit and two RBIs.  Brayden Pankonen and Landon Ruesink each had a hit and RBI.  Mason Stubbe, Braden Fersdahl, and Sutton Williams all added a hit.  Jack Henry had an RBI.

Eastman pitched three innings and allowed six earned runs on six hits and four walks with seven strikeouts.  Tad Tjaden pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts.  Pankonen pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 11, Madison 8

Dell Rapids broke an 8-8 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh to advance to the semifinal round.  Madison led 2-1 after the first inning.  Dell Rapids then scored five times in the top of the second and two more in the third for an 8-2 lead.  Madison then rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth, two in the fifth, and one more in the sixth to tie the game 8-8.

Ruesink broke the tie with an RBI double.  Henry had an RBI ground out that scored Tjaden.  Smith then reached on an error that scored Ruesink for the third run of the inning.

Ruesink had three hits, one a double, and three RBIs.  Pankonen had two hits.  Fersdahl had a triple and two RBIs.  Henry had a double and two RBIs.  Smith had a single and RBI.  Jaton added a double, and Eastman had a single.

Henry pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed five earned runs on three hits and four walks with five strikeouts.  Pankonen pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on fouor hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Tjaden pitched two innings and allowed a hit and two walks with four strikeouts.

West Central Falls in Extra Innings to Dell Rapids

West Central battled back from a 5-0 deficit, but fell in extra innings at home to Dell Rapids 7-6 on Monday, July 18th.

Dell Rapids got a run right away in the top of the first, another in the second, and three more in the to of the third for an early 5-0 lead.  West Central was able to get a couple of runs in the bottom of the third.  Keaton Vessells drove home two with a single.  After Dell Rapids got one more run in the top of the fifth, West Central scored three times.  Will Nester had an RBI sacrifice fly.  Jesse Jost scored on an error, and Landen Holewa stole home to make the score 6-5.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Vessells had an RBI single to right field to score Holewa and tie the game 6-6.  Dell Rapids got an RBI ground out in the top of the eighth to regain the lead 8-7.  West Central had the tying run on second base with two outs.  Jonathan Murray reached on an error, but Maison Schuldt was thrown out at home to end the game.

Vessells had two hits and three RBIs.  Holewa had two hits.  Nester finished with a hit and an RBI.  Carter Evans and Rayce Whiting both had a single.  Cyrus Maras pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Schuldt pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed an unearned run on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Nester pitched three innings and allowed an earned run on two walks and two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 16U Wins Extra-Inning Game over Weset Central

Dell Rapids broke a tie in the top of the eighth inning and took a 7-6 road win over West Central on Monday, July 18th.

Dell Rapids got out to a quick 5-0 lead in the game.  Lincoln Fersdahl had an RBI single in the top of the first.  Sutton Williams had an RBI single in the top of the second inning.  Fersdahl scored on a passed ball in the top of the third, Micah Pickard had an RBI single, and Ian Zellmer had an RBI single.

West Central put together two runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-2 after three innings.  Schoolmeester scored another run for Dell Rapids in the top of the fifth, but West Central scored three times in the bottom of the inning.  West Central then tied the game with a run in bottom of the seventh with two outs to force extra innings.

Pickard drew a lead-off walk to start the eighth.  He later stole second and then advanced to third on an error.  The aggressiveness worked as Zellmer drove home Pickard on an ground out for the winning run.

Fersdahl finished with two hits and an RBI.  Zellmer had a single and two RBIs.  Williams and Pickard both had a single and an RBI.  Grady Lamer finished with a hit.  Konrad Richeal pitched 5 innings and allowed four runs, all unearned, on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts.  Fersdahl pitched three innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits and eight walks with five strikeouts.

Mudcats and PBR Battle in Cornbelt Finale

Dell Rapids PBR and the Dell Rapids Mudcats met in the final regular season game of the Cornbelt League this season on Sunday, July 17th, and the two teams did not disappoint.  Both teams held a lead in the game, but the Mudcats took the win 5-4.

Riley Calhoon scored for PBR in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.  Calhoon scored again in the third inning putting PBR ahead 2-0.  The scored stayed 2-0 until the sixth inning.  Dalton Lehnen hit a three-run home run also scoring Travis Peters and Kris Regas for a 3-2 lead.  Grant Olson and Peters scored in the bottom of the eighth to give the Mudcats a 5-2 lead.  Beau Behrend and Teagan Schlimgen drew back-to-back walks in the top of the ninth and also scored, but PBR’s rally fell short as the Mudcats hung on for a 5-4 win.

Calhoon and Conner Spindler both had three singles for PBR.  Weston Hanson finished with two singles, and Tim Wilhelmson had a single.  Lehnen had three hits for the Mudcats, two singles and an home run, with three RBIs.  Olson, Peters, and Dalton Allen all had two hits each.  Mark Abrahamsen and Regas both added a single.
