First Half Secures Win for Elkton/Lake Benton over Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoThe Elkton/Lake Benton Elks used a big first half to beat the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls 54-37 on Friday, February 5th, at Elkton.  The Elks outscored St Mary 30-9 in the first two quarters of the game.  The Cardinals trailed the Elks 38-18 at the end of the third quarter.  St Mary was able to get going offensively in the fourth quarter, scoring 19 points….more than the first three quarters combined, but wasn’t enough to surpass Elkton/Lake Benton.

The Cardinals finished the night 36% (13-36) from the field.  They shot 43% (3-7) from three-point area and 53% (8-15) from the free-throw line.  The Elks were 37% (19-52) from the field in the game.  Elkton/Lake Benton out rebounded the Cardinals 36-29 and forced 26 St Mary turnovers.

Jackie Wolles finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.  Kennedi Mullany also had 10 points along with three rebounds.  Lexi Klein added six points and four rebounds, and Cassy Geraets ended the night with five points, four rebounds, and two steals.

St Mary (4-12) will travel to Marion on Monday, January 8th.

Erick Gill

Erick GillErick Foster Gill, 41, passed away at his home surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 in Sioux Falls, SD.

Erick is survived by his wife Estelle, Sioux Falls; daughter Cali, Abbeville, SC; parents Jon and Carmen Gill, Sioux Falls; brother Jon, Jr (Crystal) Gill and children Aaron and Olivia, Dell Rapids, SD; Twin sister Karin Gill-Emery (Mike) and children Sydney and Cooper, Dell Rapids, SD; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by both maternal and paternal grandparents. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Healing Arts Program through the Avera Prairie Center Foundation.

Funeral services will be 5:00pm Sunday, February 7, 2016 at Faith Baptist Fellowship. Visitation will be Sunday, 1:00-4:00pm at Heritage Funeral Home. On-Line Condolences may be left at Heritage Funeral Home.

Quarrier Wrestling Drops Three Duals at Home

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team hosted a quadrangular on Thursday, February 4th, with Adrian, McCook Central/Montrose, and West Central.  The Quarriers fell to Adrian 69-0, fell to McCook Central/Montrose 66-12, and fell to West Central 61-18.

Dell Rapids will host a triangular with Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Sioux Falls Lincoln on Thursday, February 11th.

Elks Run Past Cardinal Boys

DRSM LogoThe Elkton/Lake Benton Elks defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team 63-24 on Thursday, February 4th, in Elkton.  The Elks held the Cardinals to single-digit scoring in each quarter, forced 26 turnovers, and only allowed four Cardinal players to score in the game.

The Elks raced out to a 16-3 after the first quarter.  Elkton/Lake Benton pushed the lead to 21 points by halftime at 27-9.  The Elks then put up 22 points in the third quarter and led the Cardinals 49-17 at quarter break.  The Elks outscored St Mary 14-7 in the final quarter.

St Mary shot just 24% (9-37) from the field in the game.  They were 24% (4-17) from three-point area, and finished the game at 50% (2-4) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had a total of 26 rebounds, 18 of them defensive.

Luke Brown led the Cardinals in scoring with eight points in the game along with five rebounds.  Noah Fiegen finished with six points and nine rebounds in the ballgame.  Garret Frost and Connor Libis both finished with five points.  Libis also had seven assists

St Mary (1-14) will start a three-game home stand on Tuesday, February 9th, when they host Centerville.

New Sewer Rates Take Effect This Month

DellRapidsTowerThe waste water rates in Dell Rapids will take effect this month with the February billing.  The Dell Rapids City Council approved a 20% increase in the sewer rates for the 2016 adopted budget, and Ordinance 827 passed both readings.  The rate increase is to help with costs for the waste water treatment facility project.

The rate increases are as follows:

  • Base rate will increase to $18.34.
  • Per 1,000 gallons rate will increase to $5.06.
  • Total rate increase for 5,000 gallon user will be $7.26 per month.

This rate increase will be the first increase of more proposed increases in the future that will be phased-in to cover the costs of the new waste water treatment facility.  The total increase will not be known until the final funding package for the waste water treatment facility is received from DENR.

Verna Snoozy

Verna SnoozyVerna Snoozy, 95, of Colton, formerly of Trent, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 8, 2016 in the United Methodist Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 7, 2016 in the funeral home chapel.  On-Line Condolences may be left at Kahler Funeral Home.

Verna Elizabeth Vant Hul was born on August 29, 1920 to Bert and Anna Mae Vant Hul in Flandreau, SD. She graduated from Egan High School in 1937 and was united in marriage with Virgil K. Whipkey on September 26, 1939. They farmed in the Egan and Trent areas. After Virgil’s death in 1973, she worked at H&R Block in Sioux Falls for six and half years, then as a nurse assistant at the Dell Rapids Hospital for two and half years.

Verna married Fred Snoozy on August 1, 1981 and moved to a farm in the Colton, SD area. Fred died in November of 2010. She was a volunteer at the McKennan Hospital Hospice unit for seven years. She was a member of the Trent American Baptist Women Ministries and also a member of the Colton United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three sons and one daughter, Wayne (Lin) Whipkey of Greenville, MI; Leland (Wanda) Whipkey of Sioux Falls; Marc (Berdene) Whipkey of Sioux Falls and Patricia Ann ( Gary) Brashear of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren; Three step children, Sandrau (Tom) Swier of Sioux Falls; Floyd (Melissa) Snoozy of Colton and Deb Ford of Colton; eight step grandchildren, ten step great-grandchildren; and two step great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Andrew and both husbands.

Memorials may be directed to the Sneaky Snoozy Memorial Fund at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls.

Last Second Shot Sends Cardinal Girls Home with Win

DRSM LogoJackie Wolles hit the game-winning layup as time expired to give the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls a 34-33 win over the Bridgewater-Emery Huskies on Monday, February 1st, in Bridgewater.  The win ended a three-game skid for St Mary.

The Huskies led by as many as 12 points in the first half, and had a 21-11 lead at halftime.  St Mary held the Huskies scoreless in the third quarter and tied the game at 21-21.  The Cardinals had a six point led with about 5:00 left in the game, but the Huskies hit their last field goal with about :30 to play.  That was before Wolles made the game-winning layup at the buzzer.

St Mary finished the night shooting 36% (13-36) from the field, 33% (2-6) from three-point area, and 40% (6-15) from the free-throw line.  The Huskies shot 24% (13-54) in the game.  The Cardinals had 34 team rebounds, 10 assists, and seven steals.

The Cardinals had a balanced offensive attack in the game.  Wolles led the team with eight points.  She also had five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  Lexi Klein and Kennedi Mullaney both had seven points.  Sydney Cook finished with six points.  Cook and Klein both had six rebounds.  Cook also had three assists and three steals.

St Mary (4-11) will travel to Elkton to play the Elkton/Lake Benton Elks on Friday, February 5th.

Dell Rapids Student’s Artwork Chosen for Arts Advocacy Day at the Legislature

Austin Kramer, a junior at Dell Rapids High School, had his artwork chosen to be printed on note cards for Governor Dennis Daugaard as well as Senator Scott Fiegen as part of Arts Advocacy Day at the Legislature.  Kramer was one of ten artists invited to attend the event to present his artwork.  Kramer will present the artwork to Governor Daugaard.  The high school art teacher is Rick Mott.

Along with Kramer’s artwork, two other students had their artwork chosen to be printed on note cards.  Hannah Heiberger, an eighth-grader, will have artwork printed on note cards for Representative Roger Hunt.  Cameron Espinoza, an eighth-grader, will have artwork printed on note cards for Representative Kris Langer.  The middle school art teacher is Pat Gengler.

Arts Advocacy Day at the Legislature will highlight arts education in the State Capitol on Wednesday, February 10th.

The biennial observance focuses attention on the importance of the arts in the lives of South Dakotans.  More than 120 pieces of student art from every legislative district adorn note cards, one for every legislator, Gov. Dennis Daugaard, Lt. Gov. Matt Michels, Secretary of State Shantel Krebs and Tourism Secretary James Hagen.

“Teachers from every South Dakota legislative district assist in this arts advocacy project, showcasing the creativity of our young people and their own teaching skills,” according to Michael Pangburn, South Dakota Arts Council Executive Director.  “The artwork will serve as a daily reminder to our legislators that the arts are an integral part of learning and living in South Dakota.”

Arts Advocacy Day at the Legislature is sponsored by the South Dakota Arts Council and Arts South Dakota.

SDSU Baseball Coaches Give Clinic to Dell Rapids Coaches

SDSU3Members of the South Dakota State University Jackrabbit baseball coaching staff provided a coach’s clinic for baseball coaches in Dell Rapids on Wednesday, January 27th.  Head Coach Dave Schrage, Assistant Coach Brian Grunzke, and Pitching Coach Ben Norton shared tips, drills, and ideas to 19 Dell Rapids baseball coaches during the clinic.

Coach Schrage said, “What a great thing to talk baseball in the middle of January in South Dakota.  We like going around doing it because I’ll be honest with you, when we leave tonight hopefully we learn something.  There’s not one way to do something.”

Coach Grunzke added during his demonstration, “There’s different ways to do things.  I didn’t invent things.  Most kids are pretty athletic if you let them be athletic.” SDSU2

The coaches that attended the clinic ranged from coaching 6U baseball all the way to Legion baseball in Dell Rapids.  The coaches saw demonstrations on throwing drills, hitting drills, and pitching drills.

The clinic was free to the coaches that attended and was promoted by the Dell Rapids Baseball Association and Dell Rapids Little League.  Members of both the DRBA and DRLL boards were please with the turnout to the clinic.

Three Quarrier Wrestlers Place at Brookings Tournament

QuarriersThree wrestlers for the Dell Rapids Quarriers placed at the Les Tlustos Wrestling Invitational held in Brookings on Saturday, January 30th.  The team finished with a total of 42.0 points.  Pierre placed first as a team with 247.0 points.  Sioux Falls Roosevelt was second with 199.5 points, and Spearfish was third with 178.5 points.

Dell Rapids will host a quadrangular with McCook Central/Montrose, Adrian, and West Central on Thursday, February 4th.
