Melvin R. George, 86, of Fairmont, MN passed away on Friday, January 13, 2017 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Care Center in Blue Earth. Burial will be Fri. morning, Jan. 20, at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Mpls. On-line condolences may be left at the Lakeview Funeral Home website.
Melvin Raymond George was born on March 16, 1930 in Dell Rapids, SD, the son of William and Clara (Mergen) George. Melvin attended the Chester School in South Dakota. On September 9, 1952 he entered the U.S. Army and served in the Infantry 2nd Division during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on June 30, 1954 and returned to Dell Rapids. Melvin was united in marriage to Yvonne Mary Elsinger on April 4, 1956 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. They started out in Dell Rapids and then moved to Coleman, SD, Franklin, SD before moving to Marshall, MN in 1965. They settled in Fairmont in 1997. Melvin was a carpenter for 39 years.
The Dell Rapids Quarriers won their third game in a row and their fifth out of six games after defeating the West Central Trojans 62-45 on Tuesday, January 17th, in Dell Rapids. The Quarriers were able to lead from start to finish in the game and never trailed.
Dell Rapids held West Central scoreless for the first 5:30 of the game and jumped out to a 7-0 lead. They maintained the seven point advantage at 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Trojans got the game within two points at 18-16 with 5:00 to go in the second quarter, but Dell Rapids outscored West Central 12-4 over the rest of the quarter to lead 30-20 at halftime. Dell Rapids was able to maintain close to a 10 point lead throughout much of the third quarter, but the Trojans were able to make a little run and cut the lead to five points at 43-38 with just under a minute to play in the third quarter. The Quarriers were able to get the last basket and lead 45-38 at the end of the third. The Quarriers then held West Central to just seven points in the fourth quarter for the victory.
Emma Paul led the team with 23 points. Jayda Knuppe finished with 12 points. Kaylee Hennen added eight points, and Averi Pankonen had six points.
The Quarriers (7-4) travel to Volga to play Sioux Valley on Friday, January 20th.
The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team won and lost a dual at the Dak-12 Meet held in Madison on Tuesday, January 17th. The Quarriers lost their dual to Elk Point-Jefferson 48-27, but Dell Rapids earned a team dual win against Dakota Valley 48-29.
Jacob Vogel, Zach McKee, Brayden Gee, and Ben Cavigielli all earned two wins on the night.
Dell Rapids will be Sioux Falls O’Gorman for a triangular with SF O’Gorman and Garretson on Thursday, January 19th. The meet will begin at 5:00 p.m.

The Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in the opening round of the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament on Tuesday, January 17th, in Colman. The Raiders beat St Mary 61-35.
St Mary was only able to score 10 points total in the first half as the Raiders held a 29-10 lead at halftime. The lead extended to 51-22 by the end of the third quarter. St Mary was able to outscore the Raiders 13-10 in the final quarter.
The Cardinals shot 14-48 (29%) from the field, 3-13 (23%) from three-point area, and 4-7 (57%) from the free-throw line. The team had a total of 28 rebounds, just three assists, and turned the ball over 16 times. The Raiders finished 25-53 (47%) from the field in the game.
Connor Libis led the team in scoring with 11 points. Luke Brown finished with eight points, and Logan Gaspar added six points. Garret Frost and Max Herber led the team with five rebounds each, while Brown had four rebounds. Gaspar also had four blocked shots, and Austin Welbig finished with three assists.
St Mary (5-6) will play Estelline for the third time this year in the consolation round of the DVC Tournament. Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20th, at Colman. The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
The Dell Rapids Quarriers Garretson to just 44 points in a 70-44 win over the Blue Dragons on Monday, January 16th, in Garreston.
Dell Rapids only had a one point lead after the first quarter at 12-11, but the Quarriers held Garretson to just nine points and pushed their lead to 32-20 by halftime. The Quarriers then outscored the Blue Dragons 15-11 in the third quarter, and then outscored Garretson 23-13 in the final quarter for the win.
Dell Rapids finished the night 29-58 (50%) from the field, 6-16 (38%) from the free-throw line, and 6-14 (43%) from the free-throw line. The team had a total of 37 rebounds, 21 assists, 11 steals, and only turned the ball over six times.
Jeffrey Schuch had a double-double in the game with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Schuch also had four blocked shots. Mason Schmidt finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Austin Ellingson added 13 points, five assists, and four steals. Carson Rentz also had five assists.
Dell Rapids travels to Madison on Thursday, January 19th, to play the Bulldogs. Big Sioux Media will have a link to a live stream of the ball game.
The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls won their opening round game of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament 39-30 over the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders on Monday, January 16th, in Estelline. The Cardinals held the lead after every quarter break in the game.
St Mary had just a one point lead at the end of the first quarter at 6-5. The Cardinal offense then scored 18 points in the second quarter while holding the Raiders to just five points to take a 24-10 lead at halftime. O-R-R was able to cut the lead to nine points at 33-24 by the end of the third quarter, but both teams scored six points as the Cardinals won to advance to the semifinals.
Kennedi Mullaney led the Cardinals with 11 points in the game. Ella Heinitz and Lexi Klein both finished with eight points in the game. Sydney Cook added six points.
St Mary (5-7) will play the Deubrook Area Dolphins after their 51-12 win over Estelline. The semifinal game will be played at 8:00 p.m. in Estelline on Thursday, January 19th. The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
Dolores Rita McDonnell, 86, of Dell Rapids passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Golden Living Center in Madison, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 19, 2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the Trent Cemetery, Trent, SD. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to7:00 PM with a Wake Service at 6:00 PM and praying of the Rosary at 7:00 PM Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids. Dolores was born on March 3, 1930, the oldest of seven children to Emil and Mary “Opal” (Davenport) Eisenbeis in Montrose, South Dakota. She grew up in Madison, SD and attended General Beadle Teacher College. It was at this time that Dee met the love of her life, Gerald McDonnell and married him on November 13, 1950. They were married 64 years. Dee took on the role of homemaker and mother as their family grew to include seven children. She and Jerry resided in several Midwestern towns as they raised their family: Madison, Rapid City, Denver, Fon du Lac, Hales Corners, Milwaukee, Huron, DeSmet and Dell Rapids. After moving to Dell Rapids in 1972, Dee began working outside the home. In retirement, she enjoyed volunteer work. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Kathleen Matthew of Spearfish, Gary (Susie) McDonnell of Algonquin, IL, Patricia Park of Wentworth, Karen (Ken) Rahn of Madison, Colleen (Mark) Jensen of Dell Rapids and Janine (Reed) Hoffmann of Dell Rapids; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lola (Henry) Zwart and Joy Dixon and brother, John (Kathi) Eisenbeis.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son, Michael McDonnell; sons-in-law, Rodney Park and Randy Tiesen; grandson, Kurtis Lee Matthew and three brothers, Hartzel, Lyle and David Eisenbeis.
As matriarch of a large family, Dee strived to include everyone fairly. It is in this spirit that her grandchildren will have the honor of being named as casketbearers at her funeral; Bill Matthew, Jon DeBoer, Ben DeBoer, Jerry McDonnell, Danny McDonnell, Katie McDonnell, Jimmy McDonnell, Aaron Park, Mandy Park, Scott Park, Rose Park, Kenny Rahn, Sarah Rahn, Cheri Westendorf, Lori Baum, Dawn Lowman, Bridget McDonnell, Jeremy Hoffmann, Shannon DenOuden, Desirae Lovik, Erich Hoffmann and Elias Hoffmann.
Kristine Lynn Heeren went to her heavenly home on January 13, 2017 at the age of 54. In November of 2013, Kris was diagnosed with colon cancer. She valiantly lived the following three years through multiple treatment and surgeries. In December 2016 she moved into the Avera Dougherty Hospice House.
In 1983, she spent a year traveling throughout the US and Canada with the NAB New Day Ministry. She served on the Discipleship team where she led seminars on outreach and evangelism. This is also where she met her future husband, Clayton, who was on the music team. This led her to South Dakota where she taught for two years as a 6th grade teacher at Dell Rapids Elementary School.
Kris and Clayton were married on August 20, 1988 at Trinity Baptist in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 1989 they welcomed their first child, Chelsea, followed by Micah in 1991 and their “bonus” child, Savannah in 2000.
Kris was preceded in death by her mother, Judith in 1969 and her father, Herbert in 2016. She is survived by her husband Clayton, daughter Chelsea Redinger (Michael), son Micah (Anna Bartscher) and daughter Savannah; one granddaughter Ellis; brother Jeff Berndt and sister Julie Berndt; several extended family members, friends and brothers and sisters in Christ.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 7:00 PM at Central Baptist Church in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, January 17. Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM and dinner will be served from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM. A time of fellowship and dessert will follow the Celebration of Life Service. Kathryn J. Park, 86, of Chester, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls. Her Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2017 in St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church, Huntimer. Visitation will be in St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church on Friday, January 20, 2017 and will begin at 4:00 p.m. The family will be present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with the Christian Wake Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.
Kathryn was born on March 16, 1930, the daughter of Seba and Jane (Young) Foy in Centerville, SD. She grew up on a farm near Centerville and graduated from Centerville High School in 1948. She worked at the telephone office in Sioux Falls until she married Henry Park Jr. The couple married on June 5, 1952 in Centerville. From there, they made their home near Chester where they devoted their life to raising their five children while farming.
She was a member of St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church and Altar Society. She enjoyed the outdoors, spending her time gardening, fishing, camping, and traveling to almost every state including driving to Alaska, as well as to Europe. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo, painting and sketching, liked sharing jokes and had a special place in her heart for her dog, Rat. St Patrick’s Day was always a celebration, as her birthday was the day before and she was 100% Irish.
She is preceded in death by her son, Rodney; her three brothers, Phillip Foy, Robert Foy & James Foy; and two sisters, Vera Burns and Vivian Foy.
Kathryn is survived by her husband of 64 years, Henry Park Jr. of Chester; her sons, Randy (Pat) Park of Arlington and Tom (Janet) Park of Colton; her daughters, Lori (Mike) Paulson of Sioux Falls and Monica (Bob) Greenfield of Sioux Falls; her daughter-in-law, Pat Park of Wentworth; her 15 grandchildren: Aaron (Matthew Gaine) Park, Mandy Park, Jessica (Jafar) Karim, Jennifer (Patrick) Burke, Greg (Katie) Jones, Kari (David) Lavezzi, Kathryn Paulson, Garth (Danelle) Park, Christy (Tom) Bossman, Megan (Seth) Klentz, Scott Park, Jason (Mallory) Park, Ryan Park, Rose Park and Shannon Park; 19 great grandchildren and her sister-in-law, Eleanor Foy of Gull Lake, MN.
