Cardinal Girls Finish Third in DVC Tourney

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals avenged an earlier loss to the Colman-Egan Hawks on Saturday, January 21st, in Colman.  The Cardinals earned a 47-40 to finish third at the Dakota Valley Conference tournament.  Colman-Egan had beaten St Mary 46-29 on December 23rd at the Entringer Classic.

The first quarter proved to be a very low scoring quarter as the two teams combined for just nine points.  St Mary had a 6-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Both teams then scored 12 points each in the second quarter, and the Cardinals took an 18-15 lead into hafltime after Jackie Wolles hit a three-pointer to end the half.  The Cardinals were able to push their lead to ten at 34-24 by the end of the third quarter.  The Hawks outscored St Mary 16-13, but the Cardinals hung on for the win.

Two players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Sydney Cook led the way with 15 points.  Wolles ended the game with 14 points.  Kennedi Mullaney added nine points, and Ella Heinitz had six points.

St Mary (6-8) will travel to Baltic to take on the Bulldogs on Monday, January 23rd.

Cardinal Boys Take Fifth at DVC Tourney

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals won the consolation championship and placed fifth after a 59-52 win over the Deubrook Area Dolphins at the Dakota Valley Conference tournament in Colman on Saturday, January 21st.  The Cardinals finished with two wins at the tournament.

Deubrook held an eight point lead late in the first quarter, but the Cardinals were able to pull within a point at 16-15 at the break.  St Mary then outscored the Dolphins 10-7 in the second quarter for a 25-23 halftime lead.  The Cardinals extended the lead to five points by the end of the third quarter at 38-33, and then St Mary outscored Deubrook 21-19 in the final quarter for the win.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 20-45 (44%) from the field, 6-13 (46%) from the three-point area, and 13-21 (62%) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had 35 team rebounds and only turned the ball over eight times.

Luke Brown and Connor Libis both finished with 20 points in the game.  Brown scored 14 straight for the Cardinals in the fourth quarter.  Libis finished with four assists, and Brown had three rebounds.  Zach Geraets had six points and five rebounds.  Garret Frost also had six points along with three rebounds.  Logan Gaspar led the team with seven rebounds.

St Mary (7-6) will host Canistota on Friday, January 27th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Helen Raker

Helen RakerHelen Raker, Sioux Falls, SD, died January 9, 2017, at Sanford USD Medical Center. She was 95. Funeral Services were held on Monday, January 16. On-line condolences may be left at the Miller Funeral Home website.

Helen J. Raker was born October 29, 1921, to Emma and Joe Haverberg in Centerville, SD. She was second oldest of their six daughters. Helen attended Centerville Public Schools and graduated from Centerville High School in 1939. Active in the Scandia Lutheran Church youth programs and choir, she also played the piano and bassoon. After high school, she served an apprenticeship in a local beauty salon where she satisfied all requirements to become a licensed beautician. At this time, Helen met, fell in love with, and married Donald B. Raker of Brookings, SD. He was serving a one-year pharmacy internship in a Centerville pharmacy.   Helen married Don on June 6, 1943 and they made their home in Brookings, SD where Don finished his pharmacy education and began his career.

Two years later, Helen became a mother to Bob. In 1947 Don took a pharmacist’s job at Schirmer’s Pharmacy in Mitchell, S.D. While living in Mitchell, Helen gave birth to her second son Jim. In the opinion of friends, family, her sons and husband, Helen became an outstanding homemaker and a fantastic cook. In 1952 Helen and her family moved to Sioux Falls, SD when Don became a traveling pharmaceutical salesman. They joined and became involved in First Lutheran Church. She was deeply involved in mothering her two boys, by volunteering at school and by making sure the boys finished their homework and refereeing the boy’s squabbles.

Helen worked in various capacities for Norwest Bank from the late 60’s retiring in the mid 80’s. As they got closer to retirement, she and Don began making trips to Arizona to escape winters in SD. The trips began with a two-week stay in Sun City and finishing in 1999 as a 3-month trip. She took up golf and continued golfing not only in Arizona, but was active in ladies’ golf leagues in Sioux Falls well into her 80s. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Don, in 2000. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Godsk; sons, Robert (and his wife, Karen) and James; grandchildren, Andrea Raker, Gretchen Black and Joel Raker; and great-grandsons, Drew, Colton and Greyson Black, and Mason and Axel Raker.

Winning Streak Continues for Quarrier Girls

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers pushed their winning streak to four with a 72-54 win over the Sioux Valley Cossacks on Friday, January 20th.  Not only was this the fourth win in a row, it was the Quarriers sixth in their last seven games.

After the score was tied 10-10, the Quarriers finished out the first quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 22-10 lead after the first quarter.  Dell Rapids was able to increase the lead to 37-20 by halftime.  Sioux Valley made a couple of runs in the second half, but every time the Cossacks got the lead under 10 points, the Quarriers had an answer.

Emma Paul and Jayda Knuppe both finished the game with 21 points and seven rebounds each.  Arial Hoffman had nine points, Kaylee Hennen had eight points, and Aspen Hansen finished with seven points.

Dell Rapids (8-4) will host Elk Point-Jefferson as part of a double header with the boys on Saturday, January 21st.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Beat Estelline for Third Time

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals beat the Estelline Redmen for the third time this season.  The Cardinals won 63-15 at the Dakota Valley Conference tournament in Colman on Friday, January 20th.

The Cardinal defense held Estelline to single-digit scoring in each of the quarters.  St Mary out scored 24-3 in the first quarter and just kept rolling the remainder of the game.  The Cardinals led 38-11 at halftime and 44-13 at the end of the third quarter.

St Mary shot 25-57 (44%) from the field, 9-22 (41%) from three-point area, and 5-8 (63%) from the free throw line.  The Cardinals had 40 team rebounds, 12 assists, 16 steals, and four 22 Estelline turnovers in the game.

The Cardinal offense had a very balanced scoring attack.  Austin Welbig had 12 points and four rebounds.  Luke Brown also finished with 12 points along with five rebounds and five steals.  Connor Libis added 11 points and six assists.  Jason Cook and Max Herber both finished with eight points each.  Garret Frost and Herber each had six rebounds.

St Mary (6-6) will face Deubrook Area in the consolation championship of the DVC Tournament at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21st, in Colman.

Quarrier Boys Rally to Beat Madison

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers rallied from a nine-point fourth quarter deficit to beat the Madison Bulldogs 58-57 in Madison on Thursday, January 19th.

The Quarriers trailed through most of the game.  Madison held a 16-11 lead after the end of the first quarter.  Dell Rapids was able to trim the lead to 28-24 by halftime.  Both teams scored 15 points in the third quarter, and the Bulldogs led 43-39 at the end of the quarter.

Madison pushed their lead to nine points after a 5-0 run in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter.  However, with 5:54 to go in the game, the Quarrier run started.  The Quarriers went on a 12-0 run over the next 2:20 with points by Austin Ellingson, Sheldon Siemonsma, Mason Peter and Tanner Heim to take a 51-48 lead with 3:38 to go.

The Bulldogs stopped the run with two free throws with 3:01 to go to cut the Quarrier lead to 51-50.  The Bulldogs then regained the lead after a bucket with 1:28 to go.  Jeffrey Schuch put Dell Rapids back in front at 53-52 with 1:12 to go after two made free throws.  Again the lead went back to Madison with :58 after two made free throws, but Siemonsma hit a three point shot from the win with :45 to go to put the Quarriers back in front 56-54.  The Bulldogs were called for an offensive foul with :17 left to turn the ball over to Dell Rapids.  Peter was fouled with :14.6 on the clock and promptly made both free throws to put Dell Rapids ahead 58-54.  Josh Giles hit a three point shot with :08.1 to cut the lead to 58-57.  Dell Rapids turned the ball over on the in-bounds pass trying to baseball pass to their end of the court.  However, the defense kept Madison from getting a last second shot to hold on for the win.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 22-50 (44%) from the field, 3-17 (18%) from three-point area, and 11-14 (79%) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had a total of 29 rebounds, 14 assists, and turned the ball over just eight times.

Four players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Schuch led the team with 13 points and nine rebounds.  Heim tallied 12 points and six rebounds.   Peter finished with 12 points and three steals.  Mason Schmidt added 11 points.  Austin Ellingson dished out five assists in the game.

Dell Rapids (7-2) will host Elk Point-Jefferson as part of a double header with the girls on Saturday, January 21st.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

2017 SD Legislative Session – Dan Ahlers Week 2 Update

dan_ahlersGreetings from Pierre. Because this program affects so many South Dakotans, I would like to focus on the proposed changes to the South Dakota Retirement System. Due to economic factors, SDRS is recommending changes to protect the longevity of the fund as well as member benefits.

The South Dakota Retirement System was created to provide members and their families the opportunity to achieve financial security due to retirement, disability or death. The goal of the plan is to implement, manage and efficiently administer a sustainable retirement program.

The South Dakota Retirement System has a membership of more than 84,000 people. SDRS pays benefits in excess of $500 million each year. The majority of money paid each year goes to individuals that still live in South Dakota.

In the last 26 years, SDRS has been over 100% in actuarial valuations 21 times. SDRS’s fund ratio remains nearly 30% greater than the national average. Most states would love to have a retirement system funded as well as ours. However, due to lower than assumed investment performance the fund is 97% of its Fair Value Fund Ratio. In order to avoid the catastrophic situations of other state retirement funds, the Board of Trustees has a 100% funded objective. To maintain this objective SDRS is introducing 3 bills to ensure its longevity and commitment to its members.

HB 1016 will revise the methodology for calculating the annual cost of living adjustment or (COLA). If the fair value funded ratio is 100% or greater the COLA payable is equal to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage earners or (CPI-W). It will have a maximum increase of 3.5% and a minimum increase of .5%. If the fair value funded ratio is less than 100%, a maximum COLA is calculated that results in SDRS being fully funded and a minimum of .5%. It is important to note that this change will not cut benefits. The change only impacts the amount of increased benefits.

HB 1017 revises the definition of compensation of SDRS and establishes a penalty for false reporting. Compensation is defined as wages earned for services rendered during a specific time frame. Employer funded benefits, allowances or reimbursements for expenses are excluded. Payments in lieu of insurance, temporary pay for additional duties or incentivize retirements are also excluded. An example would be a teacher that would take an additional $1000 cash instead of opting into a group insurance plan. The $1000 payout would not be considered compensation.

HB 1018 revises the computation for benefit compensation. The reason for this change pertains to large, late-career increases in compensation. These incidents create inequities that result in a significantly higher benefit and liability. These benefits and liabilities exceed the amount the contribution and investment income can fund. This bill will phase in a longer averaging period of 5 years for people hired on or after July 1, 2021. Compensation for each year considered is limited to 105% of the highest compensation in any of the final 10 years of employment. This bill will prevent losses from large increases just prior to retirement and keep ongoing cost benefits in balance with contributions.

Dell Rapids Baseball Association Update

DellsBaseballLogoThe snow is nearly gone, the ice is melting, and the grass is turning green—all signs pointing toward spring and the start of baseball season.   Yes, it’s nearly here and the Dell Rapids Baseball Association (DRBA) is diligently preparing for the upcoming season.   The DRBA is looking forward to building off of last year’s success, as both the A and B Teener teams earned “runner-ups” in their respective state tournaments.  Little League also had two “runner-ups”, but also crowned a championship team in the MinnDak League.  Other highlights included:  High School Club Baseball saw Dell Rapids make the final four of the state tournament for the second year in a row; Legion baseball won its first game at regions before losing to the eventual state champion; and, both amateur teams (PBR and Mudcats) qualified for the state tournament and advanced past the first round.   Dell Rapids hosted the “B Teener” state tourney to many compliments and a huge success, even mother nature could not damper the mood of our guests.
DRBA is writing this column to simply update the community of the needs, changes, and future of baseball in Dell Rapids.  There are many exciting projects underway to improve our love of baseball in Dell Rapids—such as field improvements, tournaments, equipment updates, and tons of fun.  Currently, the Dell Rapids Baseball Association and Dell Rapids Little League (DRLL) are joining forces to form one entity to better accommodate baseball fans, parents, and kids in Dell Rapids. The current structure is still being formed; however, all information regarding baseball in Dell Rapids will be conducted through one website, dellrapidsbaseball.com.  To eliminate confusion, all ages of baseball will be using the same online registration site, same as last year.  You can register for Little League, High School Club Baseball, Teeners, and Legion Baseball.  Online registration will open on February 1, 2017-so register early.  Registration costs will remain the same as last year.
Of course as in every year, the DRBA and DRLL are both looking for coaches.  If you’re interested in coaching at the High School Club, American Legion, Teener, or Little League levels, please send us a note or contact a board member—all through the website.   We are always looking for coaches to teach, mentor, and encourage our youth in Dell Rapids.   You don’t need to be an expert, but a background check is required for all coaching positions, at all levels.   If you have questions, please contact a board member so we can get an answer for you.  If you are new to town and part of a new business and interested in becoming a sponsor, please see the website for more information.    DRBA and DRLL thanks all those businesses who have supported Dell Rapids baseball in the past, and would like to just give a “heads-up” that our yearly letter will be arriving shortly.   We would not have baseball if not for the support of many local businesses—so a big thank you again.
Also, with change comes the departure of board members—long time DRBA board members LeAnn Kerzman and George Henry both have stepped down from the board after many years of service; their advice and expertise will be missed. Quarrier Wrestling Earns Two Dual Wins at SF O’Gorman

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team picked up two dual wins at a triangular with Sioux Falls O’Gorman and Garretson on Thursday, January 19th, at Sioux Falls O’Gorman High School.  Dell Rapids defeated Garretson 52-24, and the Quarriers also beat Sioux Falls O’Gorman 46-26.

Jacob Vogel, Zach McKee, James Lueders, Gage Carr, Lincoln Richeal, Ben Cavigielli, and Nick Palmer all earned two wins on the night.

Dell Rapids will travel to Lennox for the Dak-12 Conference Tournament on Saturday, January 21st.

Dolphin Defense Shuts Down Cardinal Girls in 2nd Half

DRSM LogoThe Deubrook Area Dolphins held the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals to just eight total points in the second half and pulled away for a 48-29 win in the semifinals of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament in Estelline on Thursday, January 17th.

The Dolphins led by as many as seven points in the first quarter before the Cardinals closed the gap at 14-13 at the end of the first quarter.  The Cardinals scored the first bucket for their first lead of the game in the second quarter at 15-14, but Deubrook regained the lead.  St Mary was again able to pull within a point at 22-21 at halftime.  Both teams struggled offensively in the third quarter as both teams combined to score just 14 points.  The Dolphins were able to push their lead to seven at 32-25 at the end of the third quarter.  The Deubrook Area offense found its groove in the fourth quarter and outscored St Mary 16-4 in the final quarter for the win.

St Mary (5-8) will play Colman-Egan for third place in the DVC Tournament on Saturday, January 21st, in Colman at 4:00 p.m. in the old gym.
